Breaking: 2024 4-Star LB Tyanthony Smith has flipped from Texas A&M to Texas

2024 4-star linebacker Tyanthony Smith has reportedly flipped his commitment from Texas A&M to the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday night.

Through all the chaos during the early signing period on Wednesday, Texas A&M’s 2024 recruiting class is in much better shape than many expected after the firing of now-former head coach Jimbo Fisher. New head coach Mike Elko has done an admirable job signing most of the Aggies 2024 cycle.

However, like every program, especially the Florida Gators, 2024 four-star linebacker Tyanthony Smith, who has been committed to the Aggies since June 30, flipped to the Texas Longhorns after a late push from head coach Steve Sarkisian, so credit to them.

Smith, who stands at 6’1″, 205 pounds, received over 25 offers as he continued to rise in the rankings throughout his 2023 season at Jasper High School, and after the success seen from Texas standout freshman linebacker Anthony Hill, it’s no surprise that Smith chose a different collegiate path, but in the age of the transfer portal, who knows if Austin, Texas is truly his final destination.

According to On3, Smith is currently positioned as the 26th-ranked linebacker and the 54th-ranked player in Texas.

Report: Texas A&M 4-star LB commit Tyanthony Smith ‘will not be visiting’ the University of Texas

According to AggiesToday, 4-star linebacker commit Tyanthony Smith will not be taking a trip to Austin this weekend to visit the Longhorns.

It’s that time of year when collegiate prospects visit different universities to weigh their options, even if they’ve already committed somewhere.

All the movement leads to reports and speculation about will or won’t they visit certain places. Texas A&M 4-star linebacker commit Tyanthony Smith is the latest recruit to have his name mentioned in reports about a potential upcoming visit.

Gerry Hamilton of On3 Sports reported Tuesday morning that Smith was planning to visit the University of Texas at Austin this weekend. However, just over 12 hours later, AggiesToday contradicted that report and stated that “Tyanthony will not be visiting Texas this weekend.”

Smith is a 6-foot-1, 205-pound linebacker from Jasper High School in Texas. He verbally committed to the Aggies program on June 30 but has 25 other offers, including several from other Power Five Programs.

The sensational senior has taken only three official visits thus far, beginning with Texas A&M on June 2 followed by USC on June 16 and Oklahoma three days later. Other universities that Smith has offers to include: Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Missouri, LSU, North Texas, Sam Houston State, SMU, TCU, Texas State, Texas Tech and UTSA.

What Texas A&M is getting in 4-star Linebacker, Tyanthony Smith

After landing 2024 four-star linebacker Tyanthony Smith last Friday, Texas A&M is getting one of the most productive players in the country.

Texas A&M hit the jackpot on the final two days of June, first landing four-star wide receiver Drelon Miller on Thursday, then earning a massive commitment from four-star linebacker Tyanthony Smith on Friday night after all of us in the media were informed that he was a “silent commit” for Head Coach Lincoln Riley and USC.

To start, Smith’s position versatility at the linebacker position is just one of the many reasons why his rise in the recruiting ranks led to a razor-tight battle between the Aggies, LSU, and USC down the stretch, but what stood the most from a trait perspective are his instincts as the quarterback of the defense, watching plays develop pre-snap at a consistent rate.

These instincts, paired with his ability to shoot through gaps and utilize his length and strength in block shedding, make him a constant terror for running backs, while his pursuit speed in the backfield projects him as a pass rusher off the edge in specific packages. In Pass coverage, Smith’s instincts again come into play in passing lanes, while his 6-1 frame and impressive length frequently place him in pass break-up territory. As 247Sports National Scouting Analyst Gabe Brooks puts it, Smith plays hard.

Plays hard with consistent motor. Productive sophomore season. Shows impressive pursuit range and accompanying closing juice. Not a liability in space with functional athleticism to match up with skill players.

Production-wise, Smith’s 2022 junior season at Jasper High School in Jasper, Texas, pervasively displayed a player with impressive speed, range, and tackling ability, while recording 99 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks on the year, sporting a sturdy 6-1, 205-pound frame, which will likely reach the 215 to the 220-pound range during his first offseason at Texas A&M.

Tyanthony Smith is undoubtedly an exceptional athlete on defense, and how Texas A&M defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin will use Smith will also depend on fellow linebacker commit Jordan Lockhart’s place in the 2024 linebacker rotation, as both can perform at multiple spots. Either way, expect Smith to become an instant contribution in some shape or form as soon as the 2024 season.

2024 4-star Linebacker Tyanthony Smith has committed to Texas A&M

Boom! The Aggies’ recruiting streak continues as 2024 4-star LB Tyanthony Smith has committed to the Maroon and White!

BOOM! Texas A&M’s recruiting hot streak is still chugging ahead, as the Aggies’ 2024 class has now doubled since last week, with 14 total commits in the cycle after Friday’s announcement that four-star stud linebacker Tyanthony Smith has committed to the Maroon and White!

What a journey it’s been for Smith these past two months, as it was announced in early May that he would take several official visits throughout the summer, starting with consecutive trips to Norman, Oklahoma, and College Station, Texas, on the weekend of June 2. Two weeks after both visits, Smith finalized his Top 5 program list: Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M.

As one of the fastest-rising players in the 2024 cycle, simply calling Smith a “rising defensive prospect” (I just did) is an understatement once you watch his tape and analyze his stats, starting with his highly productive 2022 junior season at Jasper High School in Jasper, Texas, recording 99 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks on the year, consistently displaying the preferred speed, range, and tackling ability to thrive at the collegiate level while continuing to add weight to an already sturdy frame (6-1, 205 pounds).

According to 247Sports, he is currently positioned as the 27th-ranked linebacker prospect and the 54th-ranked player in the always talent-stacked state of Texas. In the end, Jimbo Fisher and his staff did everything in their power to persuade Smith, who was a lock to land with USC at one point, to stay home and bring his incredibly versatile skillset to College Station for the coming future. Congratulations, and Gig ’em, Tyanthony!

Two high priority 2024 prospects are predicted to land with Texas A&M

Two 2024 prospects, including 4-star WR Drelon Miller and 4-star LB Tyanthony Smith, have received a prediction to land with Texas A&M.

Welcome to the first day of the recruiting dead period, which for the next month, Texas A&M, like every other football program in the country, it is “not permissible” to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations, both on and off campus, meaning unofficial and official visits are not allowed during this time.

However, that, of course, does not include commitments. For the Aggies, two high-priority prospects in the 2024 cycle, including four-star wide receiver Drelon Miller and four-star linebacker Tyanthony Smith have received predictions to land with Texas A&M, according to Rivals/Aggies insider Landyn Rosow.

Miller, who’s entering his senior season at Silsbee High School in Silsbee, Texas, is currently positioned as the 55th-ranked player, 12th-ranked wide receiver, and 10th-ranked prospect in Texas, has been at arm’s length with the Texas A&M for the last couple of months. Still, after his eighth unofficial visit to College Station on June 21, the tides have favored the Maroon and White.

As dynamic as they come, with the speed, versatility, and route running ability needed to thrive at the collegiate level, Drelon Miller recorded 59 receptions for 1,401 yards and 21 touchdowns, combined with 361 rushing yards and three touchdowns as by far the best player on the week during every matchup.

Smith, who remains in a recruiting battle with USC, is positioned as the 10th-ranked linebacker and the 32nd-ranked player in Texas, as the highly productive backer recorded 99 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks during his 2022 junior season, possessing a solid athletic profile (6-2, 205 pounds) paired with speed, tackling ability and sideline to sideline range to thrive at the next level.

With ten total commitments in the Aggies’ 2024 recruiting class, adding two more blue chip prospects would answer nearly every lingering question regarding the Aggies’ fabled “decline” after securing the historic 2022 class, which may never be topped. Gig ’em, Drelon and Tyanthony!

2024 4-star LB Tyanthony Smith places Texas A&M among this Top 5 program list

2024 4-star linebacker Tyanthony Smith has placed Texas A&M his his top 5 program list!

Since April, Texas A&M and 2024 four-star linebacker Tyanthony Smith have been in constant contact, as the rising defensive prospect has already received over 26 offers, including nearly every blue-blood program in the country.

It was announced in early May that Smith would take several official visits throughout the summer, starting with consecutive trips to Norman, Oklahoma, and College Station, Texas, on the weekend of June 2. Just two weeks after both visits, Smith has finalized his Top 5 program list: Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M.

According to 247Sports Composite Rankings, Smith is currently positioned as the 29th-ranked linebacker prospect and the 57th-ranked player in Texas, recently receiving his four-star designation.

Simply calling Smith a “rising defensive prospect” (I just did) is an understatement once you watch his tape and analyze his stats, starting with his incredibly productive 2022 junior season at Jasper High School in Jasper, Texas, where he went on to record 99 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks on the year, possessing the speed, range, and tackling ability to thrive at the collegiate level while continuing to add weight to an already sturdy frame (6-1, 205 pounds).

With three total campus visits since the start of the year, the Aggies look to be clear favorites to land Tyanthony Smith, and if you want more evidence to back up this claim, check out what fellow 2024 and Aggie favorite wide receivers Drelon Smith and Terry Bussey had to say on the matter.

Sooners make top five for elite 4-star linebacker

One person who won’t be at the Champ U BBQ but is expected to arrive on June 19th is 4-star linebacker from Jasper, Texas, Tyanthony Smith.

ChampU BBQ weekend is underway. One person who won’t be at the BBQ but is expected to arrive on June 19th is a four-star linebacker from Jasper, Texas, Tyanthony Smith.

On Thursday, he released his top five, which included the Sooners along with the Texas Longhorns, USC Trojans, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Texas A&M Aggies.

One reason the Sooners have been in contention for Smith is because of Brent Venables. Smith has talked about his expertise on that side of the ball and specifically his success with linebackers.

“The player meeting had three different coaches talking about their defense, their run schemes, how they disguise things, how basically they’d use me and my versatility,” Smith told On3’s Sam Spiegelman on Feb. 10. “Coach Venables is a defensive-minded guy, and I belong with a good defensive-minded coach. It’s good to learn from those types of guys. In the meetings breaking it down, I’d blitz on one play and drop in coverage the next. It’s constant, too.”

He told Rivals (subscription required), “Coach Venables is a defensive-minded man. He got the most Butkus Award winners, his defense shows some versatility, and he’s coached guys like Isaiah Simmons,” Smith said. “Almost every guy (on staff) up there played linebacker.”

That’s high praise for the Sooners’ head man, but this is going to be a battle.

According to On3 Sports, Texas and Texas A&M are the favorites to land Smith. But as we found out just last year, this isn’t over until the pen has hit the paper.

Well, it’s actually not over until the pen has hit the paper and the paperwork has been submitted; see [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag]’s recruitment.

Smith has already made his trip to College Station, he’ll be at USC today, and then in Norman Monday before heading to Austin on Wednesday.

It would have been nice to get him around the guys on ChampU BBQ weekend, but the Sooners at least have a puncher’s chance. At least this way can put a lot more focus on just Smith during his official visit.

What’s next for Oklahoma after losing out on 5-star linebacker?

What’s Oklahoma’s linebacker pursuits look like after missing out on 5-Star target Sammy Brown?

Just a day after five-star linebacker [autotag]Sammy Brown[/autotag], the No. 14 overall prospect, committed to Clemson, the Sooners are working on what is next.

This is the second big piece at linebacker the Sooners were hoping to land who chose to play elsewhere. Four-star [autotag]Peyton Pierce[/autotag] committed to Ohio State.

We know the Sooners are still in contact with Pierce, so a flip is possible.

Could a flip also be possible for Brown? It’s possible but unlikely. As of right now, he’s scheduled to be in Norman for the ChampU BBQ, but it’s unclear if he has canceled that visit.

Now, would Brent Venables recruit against his old team after a player has committed there? He previously didn’t, but I think he would in this scenario since he’s now been gone for a little more than a year.

So, if the Sooners can’t flip either of those prospects, what do they do next? Some names we’ve heard are three-star [autotag]Michael Boganowski[/autotag], four-star Tyanthony Smith and, more recently, three-star [autotag]Easton Baker[/autotag].

None of those three bring the same hype as a five-star, but one thing  Venables knows very well is linebacker play. That’s something I would trust him on regardless of a rating.

So let’s break down each player, starting with Boganowski.

Some people see him as a hybrid. He’s 6 feet, 2 inches and 200 pounds and lives in Junction City, Kansas, an area Venables has had success in. The main competition will be Kansas State. According to On3, the Sooners hold a slight lead.

When talking about Oklahoma, he told Rivals a week ago, “They are going to the SEC, and they have made it clear that I am a priority. Coach Brent Venables is a winner, and it would be cool to play in one of his defenses.”

Smith’s recruitment is going to be a dogfight. He’s a highly-talented player from Jasper, Texas. He’s 6 feet, 1 inch and 205 pounds. Several schools are after him; Texas and Texas A&M appear to be Oklahoma’s main competition.

[autotag]Baker[/autotag] is a 6-foot, 190-pound linebacker from Tooele, Utah. He has come up quite a bit recently. Washington State looks to be the Sooners’ main competition. He was originally committed to BYU and will be in Norman for the ChampU BBQ on June 16.
