Giants cut Jakob Johnson, sign Ty Summers to active roster

The New York Giants have terminated the contract of FB Jakob Johnson, signed LB Ty Summers and made some changes to their practice squad.

The New York Giants have terminated the contract of veteran fullback Jakob Johnson. Again.

Johnson has spent months on and off the Giants’ active roster and practice squad, and will likely be added back in the near future.

In addition to releasing Johnson, the Giants also placed tight end Lawrence Cager on practice squad injured reserve (IR).

“Cager will probably be down here on IR,” head coach Brian Daboll revealed before the team’s walkthrough practice on Tuesday.

Replacing Cager is tight end Joel Wilson, who was among Monday’s group of workout players.

“The tight ends play quite a bit of football, physical. We’ve used a lot of multiple tight end groupings. So, for look teams and show teams down the road, I think we need some legs,” Daboll said of working out tight ends.

Wilson, 24, signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Central Michigan in 2023. He’s also spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers but has not appeared in a regular season game.

Meanwhile, replacing Johnson on the active roster is linebacker Ty Summers, who was out of standard elevations.

With an open spot remaining on the practice squad, Johnson is likely to be re-signed and then elevated ahead of Thursday’s game.

Giants elevate CB Art Green, LB Ty Summers from practice squad

The New York Giants have elevated LB Ty Summers and CB Art Green from their practice squad ahead of a Week 3 game.

The New York Giants have elevated cornerback Art Green and linebacker Ty Summers from their practice squad ahead of a Week 3 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Kicker Jude McAtamney was not elevated or signed to the active roster, meaning Greg Joseph has won the week-long competition and will start in place of Graham Gano (IR) on Sunday.

The Giants signed the 28-year-old Summers to their practice squad in late August and he’s been elevated in each of the first three weeks. Now out of standard elevations, the team will have to sign him to the 53-man roster if they want to use him on gameday again.

Like Summers, the Giants signed the 24-year-old Green to their practice squad in late August — one day after Summers. This is his first standard elevation and he has two remaining.

In Week 2, the Giants elevated linebacker Tomon Fox alongside Summers. He has two standard elevations remaining.

In Week 1, the Giants elevated linebacker Carter Coughlin and Summers. Coughlin suffered a pectoral injury against the Minnesota Vikings and has since been placed on injured reserve (IR).

For the first time this season, the Giants will enter a game with their full 53-man roster and two practice squad elevations.

Giants place Gunner Olszewski on IR, elevate 2 from practice squad

The New York Giants have placed Gunner Olszewski on injured reserve (IR) and elevated two from the practice squad.

The New York Giants have placed wide receiver and kick returner, Gunner Olszewski, on injured reserve (IR) and elevated linebackers Ty Summers and Tomon Fox from their practice squad.

With Olszewski now on IR, the Giants will be short of their full 53-man roster (plus two practice squad elevations) for the second consecutive week.

Earlier on Saturday, the Giants also added kicker Graham Gano to their injury list with a groin ailment.

They could have chosen to sign kicker Jude McAtamney to their active roster or to elevate him but opted against it. Instead, they went with the elevations of Summers and Fox.

The reason for that is rookie Darius Muasau is out this week and Micah McFadden hasn’t played in a game due to a groin injury he suffered in the Giants’ first preseason game in Houston.

McFadden practiced in full on Friday and is expected to play this week.

For Summers, this is his second standard elevation. He has one remaining. This is the first elevation for Fox, who now has two remaining.

Giants elevate Carter Coughlin, Ty Summers from practice squad

The New York Giants have elevated linebackers Carter Coughlin and Ty Summers from the practice squad and released LB Curtis Bolton.

The New York Giants have elevated linebackers Carter Coughlin and Ty Summers from their practice squad ahead of a Week 1 game against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium.

Coughlin’s elevation comes just days after he was released and subsequently re-signed to the practice squad — a move that left the Giants just 52 players on their 53-man roster.

The Giants also released linebacker Curtis Bolton on Saturday, further depleting the active roster as they are now down to 51 (plus the two elevations).

“(Coughlin) will go on to practice squad, and then we released (Jakob Johnson) off the practice squad because you can only have so many veterans,” head coach Brian Daboll said of the personnel maneuvering.

“I would say roster management stuff. I’ll leave it at roster management. Good question for Joe (Schoen), but that’s where we’re at.”

Coughlin has been a core special teams player for the Giants and will likely fill that role again on Sunday while providing emergency depth at linebacker.

Summers, a seventh-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, spent the offseason with both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions. He was waived by Detroit on August 27 and signed to the Giants’ practice squad a day later.

The 28-year-old Summers is unlikely to see much action against the Vikings unless it comes on special teams.

It is the first standard elevation for both Coughlin and Summers. They each have two remaining.

Lions sign a new quarterback, waive Antoine Green with an injury

Lions sign veteran QB Jake Fromm and LB Ty Summers, waive Antoine Green with an injury

The Detroit Lions have made a necessary addition at quarterback in advance of Monday night’s practice session. With Hendon Hooker sidelined with a concussion suffered in the preseason opener, the Lions have added Jake Fromm in a series of roster moves.

Fromm was a fifth-round pick out of Georgia in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He has only played in three games, bouncing to the New York Giants in the 2021 season. In two starts, Fromm threw one touchdown and three interceptions, including a pick-six. He was last with the Washington Commanders.

The other roster addition is linebacker Ty Summers, who has bounced around the NFL since 2019. Summer was most recently with the New Orleans Saints, playing in 15 games–exclusively on special teams.

In other moves, the Lions waived second-year wide receiver Antoine Green. The 2023 seventh-round pick from North Carolina suffered a brain injury in the preseason opener.

Detroit also released veteran OL Ike Boettger.

Jaguars release LB to officially sign Tashaun Gipson

Jaguars release LB to officially sign Tashaun Gipson

The Jaguars made their reported signing of free agent safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. official on Sunday, releasing linebacker Ty Summers in a corresponding roster move.

Gipson returns to Jacksonville on a one-year deal for his 13th NFL campaign and fourth with the Jaguars. He faces a six-game suspension at the beginning of the regular season for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy but can practice and play in the preseason.

Gipson spent three seasons (2016-18) with Jacksonville on a five-year, $36 million contract, making 159 tackles including five for loss, six interceptions, 16 defended passes and one fumble recovery over 48 starts.

The Jaguars signed Summers following a workout in May, briefly reuniting the linebacker after his stint on Jacksonville’s practice squad two seasons ago.

Summers began his career as a 2019 seventh-round NFL draft pick with Green Bay, spending three years with the Packers before originally joining the Jaguars. New Orleans poached Summers from Jacksonville’s practice squad in December 2022 and awarded him an active roster spot last year.

Summers took the field for 12 defensive snaps in Jacksonville’s preseason opener against Kansas City Saturday night, recording two tackles.

In 67 appearances throughout his five-season career, Summers has compiled 60 tackles, one defended pass and one fumble recovery.

Report: Jaguars signing veteran LB Ty Summers

The Jaguars are signing veteran linebacker Ty Summers following a workout with the team on Wednesday, according to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette.

Jacksonville waived/injured undrafted rookie wide receiver Wayne Ruby Jr. in a corresponding move on Wednesday, per Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union.

Summers tried out with Denver during the Broncos’ rookie minicamp last weekend, before working out and signing with Jacksonville.

Summers previously spent most of the 2022 season on the Jaguars’ practice squad, before signing with New Orleans and joining the Saints’ active roster that December. He remained with the Saints throughout the 2023 campaign.

A seventh-round selection by Green Bay in the 2019 NFL draft, the 6-foot-1, 241-pound Summers has produced 60 tackles, one defended pass and one fumble recovery over 67 appearances and one start in his NFL career, having taken the field with the Packets, Jaguars and Saints.

Summers joins a Jaguars’ inside linebacker room that includes Foyesade Oluokun, Devin Lloyd, Chad Muma, Ventrell Miller, Yasir Abdullah, Caleb Jackson and Dequan Jackson.

Analyzing final Vikings injury report vs. Saints

The Vikings are getting healthier heading into the stretch run

The Minnesota Vikings are set to take on the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon with Josh Dobbs getting his first start for the franchise.

Throughout the week, the injury report saw multiple names on it with significant starters in limbo for Sunday’s game.

The final injury report is out and the Vikings injury report is extensive.

Saints promote linebacker Ty Summers to their 53-man roster

The Saints promoted LB Ty Summers to their 53-man roster, opening a spot on their practice squad for recently-waived RB Kirk Merritt:

The New Orleans Saints continued to tweak their roster on Thursday ahead of Week 3’s kickoff with the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Per the daily NFL transactions wire, the Saints have promoted linebacker Ty Summers from their practice squad to the 53-man roster, which opened a spot for recently-waived running back Kirk Merritt to return.

Summers primarily plays special teams. He initially signed with the Saints practice squad after roster cuts in August but was let go to facilitate other moves, and the team brought him back after linebacker Ryan Connelly (another specialist in covering punts and kickoffs) went down with an injury. He played the fifth-most snaps in the kicking game last week against the Carolina Panthers.

Coincidentally, Summers is a former Packers draft pick (selected in the seventh round out of TCU in 2019). The Saints signed him off the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad late last year. He now joins Demario Davis, Pete Werner, Zack Baun, Nephi Sewell, and D’Marco Jackson on the 53-man roster. Jaylon Smith and Anfernee Orji are still on the practice squad.

Merritt, a former wide receiver who converted to running back last season, missed most of the summer with an injury and exclusively lined up at receiver on his handful of snaps in Week 1. He was inactive in Week 2 and waived, but cleared waivers to re-sign with the Saints practice squad. He joins Jordan Mims there with Tony Jones Jr. promoted to the 53-man roster with Jamaal Williams (who is managing an injury) and Kendre Miller.

So where does this leave the Saints in terms of numbers? They have now filled 52 of their 53 roster spots with all 16 spaces on the practice squad accounted for. Alvin Kamara is returning from his three-game suspension on Monday, Sept. 25, and the Saints will not have to waive anyone to make room for him. Barring more changes, of course. Stay tuned.

Saints elevate two practice squad players for Week 2 vs. Panthers

The Saints are elevating practice squad running back Tony Jones Jr. again for Week 2, suggesting Kendre Miller will have to wait a little longer to make his debut:

The New Orleans Saints announced they are elevating practice squad running back Tony Jones Jr. again for Week 2’s game with the Carolina Panthers on Monday night, suggesting Kendre Miller will have to wait a little longer to make his debut.

Jones gained 5 yards on his sole rushing attempt in Week 1 but totaled just 7 snaps on offense in the game while playing behind Jamaal Williams. If Miller’s injured hamstring is going to keep him on the sidelines again this week, expect a similar workload for the veteran backup. Miller practiced on a limited basis and is officially questionable to play.

But this isn’t the only roster move the Saints are making at the last minute. They’ve also elevated practice squad linebacker Ty Summers after an injury took Ryan Connelly out of action; Summers re-signed with the Saints early last week. Connelly has been a core special teams player for New Orleans and played 21 of their 24 snaps in the kicking game last week prior to his injury, so look for Summers to fill in there. Summers carved out a role for himself in special teams late last season.
