Bills vs. Jets: Team connections

Connections between players on both teams:

The Buffalo Bills will host the New York Jets for a Week 11 matchup on Sunday at 4:35 p.m.

It’s a brand new NFL weekend with plenty on the line for both teams. But for some on the Bills (5-5) and Jets (4-5) there is a bit more on the line than some others.

That’s because some players and coaches for both teams could be playing against their former teams. That can create a little bit of extra motivation for them heading into Sunday.

With that, here’s a quick list of connections the two teams have with one another ahead of the upcoming matchup at Highmark Stadium:

Bills elevate Andy Isabella, Josh Norman from practice squad to face Bucs

What to know about these elevations from the practice squad for the #Bills:

The Buffalo Bills have elevated two interesting players from their practice squad ahead of facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football: Andy Isabella and Josh Norman.

The team announced prior to kickoff that both players will suit up. It’s the first time both have been called up from the practice squad.

In terms of their direct positions, Isabella’s call up could mean he’s featuring in a wide receiver role against the Buccaneers (3-3) or as a returner. However, the Bills (4-3) just signed Ty Johnson to their roster last weekend who then went on to take returner duties against the New England Patriots.

With the lack of secondary production in the offense behind Stefon Diggs, there could be a case for Isabella to play out of the slot.

Norman’s elevation could mean he’s taking over a spot held by former first-round pick Kaiir Elam. Throughout early portions of the season, the young cornerback Elam has been inactive on numerous game days.

Inactives for Bills vs. Bucs will be announced 90 minutes prior to kickoff, which Bills Wire will provide updates on.

Relating to other positions: Buffalo did not elevate a defensive tackle from the practice squad. That’s a good sign that Ed Oliver (toe) will be good to go. He was listed as questionable to play.

What can the Bills expect from RB Ty Johnson?

With the #Bills signing RB Ty Johnson to the 53-man roster, what can Bills fans expect from him?

The Buffalo Bills recently had some interesting events take place in relation to the running back room. After running back Damien Harris went down with a head/neck injury in Buffalo’s Week 6 win over the New York Giants, the Bills tried to find someone capable of replacing what Harris brought to the table now that he’s on injured reserve.

On Friday, Buffalo announced that they signed running back Ty Johnson from the practice squad to the 53-man roster ahead of their matchup on Sunday against the New England Patriots. Johnson, a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has been with the Bills since August when he initially signed with the team in free-agency.

With Johnson signed to the 53-man roster, it appears that he’ll get some run in a backfield headed by starter James Cook. To that point, what can be expected from Johnson in his new role for the Bills?

Bills sign RB Ty Johnson, place RB Damien Harris on injured reserve

Buffalo Bills sign RB Ty Johnson to 53-man roster, place RB Damien Harris on injured reserve.

The Bills have made some roster moves on Friday which were expected.

The team announced that running back Damien Harris was placed on injured reserve. Harris sustained a head/neck injury against the Giants last weekend during a 14-9 win.

Taking his place on the roster is Ty Johnson. The Bills (4-2) have signed Johnson ahead of facing the Patriots (1-5) on Sunday.

The transactions were expected because of another move that nearly happened but did not.

Reports earlier this week indicated that the Bills were going to bring Leonard Fournette in for a free-agent visit. The same update said that he was going to sign with the team in some capacity, likely their 53-man roster.

The Bills intended to do that because they were expecting Johnson to leave the practice squad and sign with another team. Any NFL team can sign players off another club’s practice squad each week, however, their original team has an option to sign that player to the active roster in order to keep them. That’s what the Bills did with Johnson after the Harris injury.

Fournette remains a free agent and it’s unclear if the Bills could have interest in him in the future. For now, Johnson fills out the team’s depth at running back.

On Harris, it’s unclear how long he will remain on the injured reserve list. Throughout this past week, he did not practice at all after being taken off the field last week with an ambulance. He was released from the hospital by Monday but is evidently still dealing with the injury.

New Bills RB Ty Johnson really does not like the Jets

Ty Johnson, not a #Jets fan:

The Buffalo Bills are adding Ty Johnson as a late-offseason mix in their running back room.

Johnson signed in Buffalo after most recent spending time with the New York Jets. It’s pretty easy to see that he’s going to be giving it his all to shock the world and make the Bills’ final 53-man roster just for a chance to get back at his former team.

Johnson is not a fan of Gang Green.

In March, Johnson re-signed in New York.

Soon after things hit the fan.

Working out on his own, Johnson sustained a pectoral injury. He checked in with the Jets training staff about the situation and he says the team advised him to have surgery.

By April, he was released, and then Johnson decided to reveal the whole situation in May.

Johnson was unhappy the team advised him to go under the knife when he felt like they already decided they would be cutting him.

“I’ve had some dark, dark days, man,” Johnson said in the social media video. “Flew out the next day. Came back happy that I got it done, even though I didn’t want to get it done.

“That following Wednesday, you out of there,” he said.

At this late stage of the offseason, Johnson might very well be auditioning for a role with another NFL team by signing with the Bills. It’s not out of the norm for teams to use depth players for most of the game in their preseason finale, which is what awaits Buffalo this upcoming weekend against the Chicago Bears.

Regardless, there almost certainly has to be a hope in Johnson that he is getting a fair shake at making Buffalo’s final roster..

The Bills do open the regular season against the Jets, after all.

Buffalo Bills to sign free agent Ty Johnson

#Bills to sign free agent Ty Johnson:

With two open roster spot thanks to offensive line departures, the Buffalo Bills will be using one on a running back.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, free agent running back Ty Johnson is set to sign in Buffalo.

Johnson, a sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2019, has most recently played for the New York Jets.

The 25-year-old has only made six career starts in four seasons. That gives a hint of what Johnson’s game is all about.

Johnson has averaged 4.4 yards per career in his career, however, he’s maxed out at 63 carries in a single season. The 5-foot-10 back is known for his pass-catching ability as a third-down playmaker.

In that department, Johnson has hauled in 86 catches on 131 targets in his career, good for 668 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson has also contributed on special teams in his career.

Johnson joins a running back room currently with James Cook at the top. Behind him is a mix of Damien Harris, Latavius Murray, Darrynton Evans and Jordan Mims. Harris had been expected to make an impact of sorts, but he has not suited up in the preseason just yet due to a knee injury.

Then again, adding players late in the preseason which allows them to “audition” for other teams is not out of the norm.

Over the past week, the two losses from the Bills roster came via Brandon Shell and Tommy Doyle. Both are tackles on the O-line. Shell retired from football while Doyle suffered a season-ending injury.

Buffalo lost two offensive lineman but they don’t have to replace those two with other players in the trenches. Evidently, the front office felt like they needed another playmaker instead of more offensive line depth at this time.

According to reports, Buffalo did sign offensive lineman Garrett McGhin to fill one of those vacant spots.

Bills Wire will provide roster updates throughout the 2023 season.

Ty Johnson shares insight into injury and release from Jets

Ty Johnson speaks on his injury

Running back Ty Johnson re-signed with the Jets earlier this offseason. Not long after, he was released by the Jets with a non-football injury designation.

Johnson took to Instagram Friday to share some insight into that injury and his release from the team.

Johnson revealed his suffered a torn pectoral muscle while working out on his own. He then met with Jets doctors who advised him to get surgery, which he went through with. Shortly after the surgery, the Jets cut ties with Johnson with the non-football injury designation because the injury happened outside of the team facilities.

Johnson played in all 17 games last season, rushing 30 times for 160 yards and a touchdown and adding 88 yards on 12 catches.
