A delayed start has forced Suns rookie Ty Jerome to learn on the fly

Suns rookie Ty Jerome played just his second game of the season on Wednesday after missing significant time due to an ankle injury.

ORLANDO, Fla. — As Phoenix Suns rookie Ty Jerome was forced to sit for the first month of the season, the first-round pick would often learn by watching the game from the sidelines.

But there is no substitution for actual, game experience.

Jerome suffered a sprained right ankle during practice just two days before the start of the regular season, forcing him to miss the first 18 games for the Suns. He eventually was ready to return to the court to play in a pair of rehab games in the G League before re-joining the Suns.

“It was definitely frustrating,” Jerome told Rookie Wire. “Two days before our first game with that happening it was really just unfortunate and frustrating but I had to focus on the rehab.”

On Monday, Jerome finally made his NBA debut.

In 12 minutes off of the bench, Jerome recorded four points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals in a win over the Charlotte Hornets. He was active on defense and helped assist his teammates with some flashy passes.

“It felt great, something I waited on for a while, obviously,” Jerome said. “Just working hard in the rehab process and try to study the game while I was out so I didn’t miss too much.”

Jerome got his second crack at playing on Wednesday against the Orlando Magic.

The rookie was among the first players off of the bench for head coach Monty Williams as he tries to get Jerome up to speed quickly. Jerome tallied five points, seven rebounds and one assist but struggled in other areas during the 128-114 loss.

Jerome piled up five turnovers in the contest and had a number of passes fall short of its intended target, causing several deflections for the Magic throughout the game. Orlando scored 18 points off of forced turnovers in the contest.

Williams took responsibility for getting his rookie up to speed.

Tonight, he had [five turnovers]. He’s gotta see the floor better and he’s gotta understand the athlete that he is playing against. They got hands on balls tonight with his passes but I have to develop him. I gotta show him on film, show him where the open guy is or where the shot is. It’s on me to develop him.

After missing so much time, the transition for Jerome to the NBA will likely have some bumps along the way. Jerome is still adjusting to his teammates and making the right reads on certain plays.

As is the case for every rookie, Jerome will have some learning curves to deal with this season but unlike most of his peers, his will come much later after missing extended time.

Next up for the Suns: A road matchup Thursday vs. the Pelicans.

Ty Jerome makes long-awaited NBA debut with the Suns vs. the Hornets

After seeing his official debut delayed due to a sprained right ankle, Suns rookie Ty Jerome got his first taste of the NBA on Monday.

After seeing his official debut delayed due to a sprained right ankle, Phoenix Suns rookie Ty Jerome got his first taste of the NBA on Monday night against the Charlotte Hornets.

Jerome initially suffered the injury in practice on Oct. 21 and was not able to do any on-court activities until only a few weeks ago. The former Virginia guard eventually made enough progress to play two games in the G League with the Northern Arizona Suns with his most recent outing Saturday.

On Monday, Jerome made his long-awaited debut.

Jerome recorded four points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals in 12 minutes off of the bench for the Suns in the 109-104 win. Jerome dropped in a beautiful floater for his bucket and made his presence with his first steal and assist to Devin Booker.

Jerome did not appear to be hampered by his ankle throughout his time on the floor. The Suns likely didn’t want to overextend Jerome in his first game back so his workload could continue to increase. He has proven to have that ability to provide a spark off of the bench and he certainly did so on Monday.

The Suns return to action Wednesday against the Orlando Magic.

After playing in his second G League rehab assignment on Saturday, Phoenix Suns rookie guard Ty Jerome is probable to play on Monday night against the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced.

Jerome has not yet made his official NBA debut after suffering a sprained right ankle in practice on Oct. 21. He has made two appearances with the Northern Arizona Suns in the G League as he continues to recover from the injury.

The first-round pick recorded a season-high 18 points, including 16 in the first half alone, Saturday night for NAZ Suns in a loss against the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He logged 19 minutes off of the bench, playing in 5-8 minute stretches in three-quarters of work before sitting in the final period.

Jerome showed no lingering issues with his ankle as he finished 6-of-8 from the field while converting on both 3-point attempts. He took contact on a couple of different plays, finishing strong at the rim to draw a few trips to the free-throw line as he appears to be ready for NBA action.

With Jerome poised to suit up in the NBA, it is unclear what his role in the rotation will be but he could prove to be a valuable addition to the team off of the bench.

Suns assign first-round pick Ty Jerome to the NAZ Suns of the G League

Ty Jerome has not yet appeared in a game for the Suns this season after suffering a sprained right ankle in practice on Oct. 21.

The Phoenix Suns have assigned rookie guard Ty Jerome to the Northern Arizona Suns of the G League, the team announced on Monday afternoon.

Jerome has not yet appeared in a game for the Suns after suffering a sprained right ankle in practice on Oct. 21. He was seen in the days following the injury in a walking boot but has since returned to doing some light work on the court.

Suns head coach Monty Williams said last week that Jerome is progressing every day in his recovery but was still unsure of a return date. The move to send Jerome to the G League was likely designed to be a rehab assignment to get practice and some playing time with Northern Arizona.

With Jerome set to spend some time in the G League, he could be nearing a return to the court. The 24th overall selection hinted on Instagram a few days ago that he would be returning soon so his NBA debut may be coming sooner than later after his stint in the G League.

Jerome did not play with the Suns in Summer League after he was involved in a draft-night trade. In four preseason games, Jerome averaged 6.8 points, 3.8 assists and one steal while shooting 45.8% from the field.

The NAZ Suns play next on Wednesday though it is unclear if Jerome will suit up in that contest.

Suns still don’t know when Ty Jerome will return from injury

Ty Jerome suffered a sprained right ankle in practice on Oct. 21 and has not yet played with the Suns in the regular season.

Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams said on Sunday that the organization is still not sure when first-round pick Ty Jerome will return to the court.

The 24th overall selection suffered a sprained right ankle in practice on Oct. 21 and has not yet played with the Suns in the regular season. Jerome was seen in the days following the injury in a walking boot but his now out of the boot and able to get shots up on the court, according to Williams.

Every day he is closer. We’re cautiously optimistic about seeing him on the floor and taking shots but we still don’t know. When he first did it, I thought it was a normal twist — two or three days and then he’ll be back — and then I found out it was more severe than we thought. It’s just good to see him on the floor getting shots and walking through stuff in drills. We still don’t know. We still have to trust the process. He is a young player and this is his first injury so we’ll know more after this how he heals.

In four preseason games, Jerome averaged 6.8 points, 3.8 assists and one steal while shooting 45.8% from the field. Williams used Jevon Carter in place of Jerome but he has since shortened his rotation, leaving the veteran on the outside looking in.

Jerome faces a long road to returning to the court and cracking the rotation as the Suns are likely going to take their time with his recovery. Without Jerome, the Suns have started off the season with a 7-5 record.

Phoenix plays next on Tuesday against the Sacramento Kings.
