Twitter reacts: Adam Schefter pushes bizarre conspiracy about Chiefs, referees

See what Twitter had to say when Adam Schefter doubled down on a bizarre conspiracy about the NFL’s referees and the Kansas City #Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the target of a prolonged smear campaign on social media sites recently, and the bellyaching among the team’s detractors seems to have reached a fever pitch this weekend.

To hear some fans tell it, the Chiefs are constant beneficiaries of perceived favoritism among the NFL’s referees, who always side with the defending Super Bowl champions—especially when it comes to roughing the passer penalties.

On Saturday, NFL insider Adam Schefter added fuel to the conspiratorial fire by posting a tweet that seemed to take a jab at Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Then, on Sunday morning, Schefter doubled down on the baseless narrative, posting a misleading statistic that—on its face—would lend credence to the perceived difference in officiating.

It is unclear whether Schefter actually believes the bizarre conspiracy, or if he is just trying to drive engagement on his social media channels.

Either way, many notable members of Chiefs Twitter gave their two cents about Schefter’s bogus narrative.

Twitter reacts: Chiefs defeat Texans in Week 16 showdown

See what #Chiefs fans on Twitter had to say about Kansas City’s Week 16 win over the Houston #Texans on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have added a fifth game to their winning streak with a Week 16 victory over the Houston Texans in a dramatic struggle at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Patrick Mahomes took the initiative to put the first score on the board in Saturday’s memorable showdown between AFC powerhouses when he took a first-quarter carry 15 yards for a touchdown on Kansas City’s opening possession.

The Chiefs’ secondary feasted on second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud, tallying two interceptions and one sack in what was arguably one of the unit’s most dominant performances of the season.

Kansas City advanced its record to 14-1 when the final whistle blew, and now only needs one more win to secure the No. 1 seed for the AFC playoffs.

Fans were not afraid to voice their opinions on the matchup after the final score was posted on Twitter.

Here were some of the top reactions to the Chiefs victory:

Twitter reacts: Chiefs waive RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire

See what users on Twitter had to say about the Kansas City #Chiefs’ decision to waive veteran RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire this week.

The Kansas City Chiefs waived veteran running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on Monday ahead of their Week 16 matchup against the Houston Texans.

Edwards-Helaire was a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft after an illustrious collegiate career in which he played a key role in the LSU Tigers’ 2019 College Football Playoff national championship victory.

At LSU, Edwards-Helaire was part of a Tigers offense that featured Cincinnati Bengals stars Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, and All-Pro Minnesota Vikings pass-catcher Justin Jefferson.

He has spent the entirety of his professional career in Kansas City, and will now get a chance to earn a role with another team before the playoffs begin.

Edwards-Helaire posted a message about his departure from the team in a post to Twitter on Monday shortly before the Chiefs announced that he had been waived:

Top reactions to Chiefs’ Week 15 victory over Browns

See what #Chiefs fans on Twitter had to say about Kansas City’s victory over the #Browns in Week 15.

The Kansas City Chiefs advanced their regular season record to 13-1 after a 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field in Week 15.

The Browns were held scoreless by Kansas City’s outstanding defense through the first half, and the Chiefs put 21 points on the board before Cleveland’s first touchdown in the third quarter.

Browns quarterback Jameis Winston was sacked five times during the game, and threw three interceptions that kept Kansas City on top.

With this victory, the Chiefs maintained their lead for the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs, holding off the surging Buffalo Bills who defeated the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon.

Though Kansas City was expected to handle the challenge of facing Cleveland with ease, the Chiefs’ 14-point margin of victory over the Browns was something of a letdown for fans in Western Missouri.

‘Worst 11-1’ trends on Twitter after controversial penalty leads to Chiefs win vs. Raiders

Football fans made the term ‘Worst 11-1’ trend on Twitter after a controversial penalty helped the #Chiefs beat the #Raiders in Week 13.

The Kansas City Chiefs became the first team in the NFL to clinch a playoff berth after defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 19-17 on Black Friday.

However, a controversial penalty at the end of the game left a bad taste in the mouths of Raiders fans, who won’t be keen to congratulate the Chiefs on their impressive accomplishment.

Friday’s AFC West matchup was decided by an illegal shift penalty against the Raiders that occurred just before Las Vegas got a chance to kick a game-winning field goal in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

After what was arguably one of Kansas City’s worst performances this season, Raiders fans were less than pleased that Las Vegas had bungled its comeback attempt. The Raiders faithful were so incensed about the loss that they got the term ‘Worst 11-1’ to trend on Twitter.

Twitter reactions to Davante Adams losing in debut with Jets are best kind of petty

The level of petty displayed following Davante Adams’s debut with the Jets is what twitter was made for.

Bitter fans can be petty. And you can bet there’s plenty bitter Raiders fans right now ready to lay the petty on real thick when it comes to Davante Adams.

The former Raiders receiver started the first three games of his third season with the Raiders, then requested a trade. And, of course, the team he went to was the one everyone predicted — the New York Jets.

In fact, it kinda seemed like that was his and Aaron Rodgers’s plan all along. So, yeah, Raiders fans are none too happy.

Adams supposedly had a hamstring injury that was keeping him from playing for the Raiders the past three weeks. The moment he was traded and reported to the Jets, he got a pep in his step and was jogging onto the practice field, ready to start just days after joining the team.

That start was in primetime against the Steelers who the Raiders had faced just the week before. And the result was much the same.

In fact, the Jets loss dropped them to 2-5. Same record as his former team. You’d expect things will improve for Davante in time with the playbook and such. But for now, Raiders fans are enjoying the moment. And they’re not alone.

Twitter reacts to Raiders bringing back QB Nathan Peterman

Twitter reacts to Raiders bringing back QB Nathan Peterman

Here I was toiling away with my usual battle not to get distracted by every little thing and actually do something productive, when a mini bombshell drops in my lap — the Raiders signed Nathan Peterman.

Yes, THAT Nathan Peterman.

The Nate Peterman who spent parts of four seasons with the Raiders for four years, seeing action in just two games and throwing a total of five passes for 25 yards.

So, when I tweeted out the news, the reactions were pretty much to be expected. Most were some form of this:

Some remember the camp that the Raiders spent on Hard Knocks and the way that Jon Gruden laid into Peterman.

Now, to be fair, that was the 2019 training camp, which was Peterman’s third NFL season and his first camp with the Raiders.

After that he spent three seasons with the Raiders, that first year on the practice squad.

From there, he spent two seasons in Chicago with the Bears. That’s where he played under Luke Getsy — Raiders new OC — and thus you have the connection that is bringing him back into the fold with the Raiders.

Peterman was signed this offseason by the Saints and released on August 2 due to a glut of QBs in New Orleans.  And after the way the Raiders QBs looked in the second half of their preseason opener, the Raiders probably felt a move had to be made.

And at least one commenter sought to give Peterman the benefit of the doubt.

While others just went with sarcasm.

Honestly, though, he probably is a better option than Anthony Brown or Carter Bradley at this point. Which says a lot more about the Raiders QB situation than anything.

Twitter reacts to RGIII saying Chiefs should sign Odell Beckham Jr.

Users on Twitter had mixed reactions to Robert Griffin III’s suggestion that the #Chiefs should sign Odell Beckham Jr.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to add a receiver during the 2024 offseason after their pass-catchers underwhelmed last year.

While Rashee Rice’s job is secure heading into next season, his positional running mates may be at risk of losing their spots on Kansas City’s roster.

Former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III took to social media on Friday to give his take on the Chiefs’ receiver situation, suggesting that the reigning Super Bowl champions should sign Odell Beckham Jr. in the offseason.

Beckham played for the Baltimore Ravens last year after stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Cleveland Browns but didn’t achieve the prolific production that many fans in the Charm City expected.

Despite this, he remains one of the NFL’s most popular wide receivers and could benefit from playing with a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes in the twilight of his career.

Twitter reacts to Chiefs signing punter Matt Araiza

Users on Twitter reacted to the #Chiefs’ decision to sign punter Matt Araiza on Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed free agent punter Matt Araiza on Thursday, marking their first significant move of the offseason since winning Super Bowl LVIII.

Araiza, known to his fans as “Punt God”, was a decorated player as a collegian at San Diego State University, earning All-American honors and the Ray Guy Trophy in 2021.

Initially selected by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Araiza’s professional career was nearly ended by a lawsuit that was dismissed in December.

His signing may mark the end of Tommy Townsend’s tenure in Kansas City, which made some fans feel uneasy about the signing when news of his acquisition by the Chiefs broke this week.

Townsend had become a cherished member of Kansas City’s special teams unit and, with his future now unclear, users on Twitter were quick to react to Araiza’s signing.

Twitter lambasts Mike Tannenbaum for bizarre hypothetical trade

Users on Twitter weren’t pleased a hypothetical trade floated by Mike Tannenbaum that would send #Chiefs DB Trent McDuffie to the #Dolphins.

ESPN insider Mike Tannenbaum found himself in the crosshairs of Twitter users on Tuesday morning after he floated the idea of a trade that would send Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Miami Dolphins for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.

While Kansas City has a clear need at the receiver position, football fans across the country seemed to think that sending McDuffie to Miami would be a terrible idea, even if the Chiefs stood to gain an elite playmaker in return.

Hypothetical trade talk is always part of the NFL offseason, but Tannenbaum’s bizarre player swap scenario was too farfetched for even the most open-minded users on Twitter.

McDuffie cemented himself as one of the league’s top cornerbacks after an outstanding 2023 campaign, and the idea that he might leave Kansas City was repulsive to many fans.

Check out some of Twitter’s responses to Tannenbaum’s questionable trade below to see just how much Chiefs fans want McDuffie in Kansas City for the long term:
