Kenta Maeda’s PitchCom inadvertently tipped off Rays batters in a spring training game

PitchCom’s ability to prevent sign stealing has an obvious fatal flaw

PitchCom has seemingly taken over baseball, with more and more teams not only using the electronic signal device to help pitchers and catchers communicate without signs, but allowing pitchers to call their own games on the mound.

The device has proven extraordinarily useful for some. There’s just one potentially huge problem teams are going to have to monitor: the volume level on the corresponding earpiece. Minnesota Twins starter Kenta Maeda learned this the hard way on Thursday in a spring exhibition against the Tampa Bay Rays — though it didn’t impact his performance.

Per the Associated Press:

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said the PitchCom device catcher Tony Wolters was using was loud enough for Tampa Bay Rays hitters to hear every pitch that was called. Plate umpire Brennan Miller heard them all through the wireless system used by pitchers and catchers to communicate.

Maeda still threw two scoreless innings, allowing two hits. He struck out two and walked one.

“I said, ‘Nicely done. By the way, something to note, they knew every pitch that was coming,”’ Baldelli said.

It’s probably not a great sign for the Rays that they still couldn’t manufacture any runs despite knowing what pitches were coming, but that also speaks to Maeda’s ability to work effectively.

PitchCom audibly tells the pitcher and catcher which pitch is coming next. It was theoretically meant to help cutdown on sign stealing across the game.

Now teams will have to worry about coms sharing instead.

Still, it’s much better to have this problem in March than April and beyond. Maybe it’ll even lead to fans trying to stay as quiet as possible when the home team is batting in order to help them hear better.

Or maybe players will just learn to turn down the volume next time.

Twins reliever Jhoan Duran just broke the record for fastest pitch in team history — again — with this ridiculous fastball

Jhoan Duran is impossible with these pitches.

There’s throwing gas out there on the diamond and then there’s whatever Jhoan Duran is doing.

This dude is completely ridiculous. He might be the most fascinating pitcher in baseball at this point. He’s out here throwing Splinkers at 100 miles per hour and Curveballs at 90. These are things that just should not be possible.

If he’s doing that with movement pitches, then you’d best believe fast balls are absolutely no problem for this dude. He’s out here throwing joints that are shattering team records over and over and over again.

He tossed a 104 mph fastball on Tuesday night that shattered his own previously established records at 103.1 and 103.3 set back in May. Good luck hitting this bad boy.

This pitch technically came in at 103.8, but when you round up you get to 104. This dude is breaking the game.

At this point, it feels like a foregone conclusion that he’ll tie Aroldis Chapman’s record for fastest pitch in MLB history at 105 mph. We’ll see. In the meantime, though, the Twins better be ready to clear out that record book.

White Sox walk-off Twins twice in one at-bat after umps reverse game-winning call on Jose Abreu

That’s gonna put a dent in the fireworks budget

The White Sox cannot help but remain the weirdest team in baseball. Even when they’re not really trying.

Friday night provided the latest example as American League central rival Minnesota Twins came to town looking to halt Chicago’s two-game win streak.

Let’s jump ahead to the ninth inning, where the Sox had two runners on in a tie game and Andrew Vaughn stepping up to the plate against the shaky control of Jorge Lopez. You can guess where this is headed. Lopez hit Vaughn high and in on the first pitch of the at-bat and both teams immediately began jawing.

That loaded the bases for Jose Abreu, which seemed like a good time to swap Lopez out for, uh, anyone else. The Twins did not do this. And the break Lopez had while players returned to their benches did not fix his control issues. Immediately, Lopez threw in on Abreu and the veteran first baseman appeared to take it off the hand for a hit-by-pitch walk-off win.

The Sox sure thought so, too. Players ran out on the field to mob Abreu while fireworks shot off overhead. There was just a slight problem—in the midst of all the chaos, the Twins successfully challenged the ruling on the field and kept the game from ending.

So after all the celebrating, Abreu had to grab his bat and head back into the box with one strike, bases loaded and one out.

This time he made sure to deliver for real. Cue the fireworks and lights and everything else (again).

As bad as that ride was for Twins fans, it was arguably even worse for Twins bettors. According to Action Network, 82 percent of all bets and 91 percent of the money wagered backed Minnesota (-135). They had to watch those bets miss twice in a matter of pitches.

The White Sox, however, used the win to get to 66-66 on the year—the 23rd time this season they’ve been exactly .500. So it’s really debatable which side is feeling more pain overall in 2022.
