Former Auburn slugger traded to Yankees in blockbuster deal

Josh Donaldson is on the move once again after being dealt to the evil empire.

On Sunday afternoon, former Auburn baseball player Josh Donaldson was traded from the Minnesota Twins to the New York Yankees.

In a blockbuster deal, the Yankees grabbed the three-time All-Star in exchange for Gio Urshela and Gary Sanchez. Donaldson has played for several teams over the years. His career began in 2010 with the Oakland Athletics. He spent four years with the A’s organization.

Shortly after, he was dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014 where he would spend the next four years. In 2015, he won the AL MVP award with the Blue Jays. In the past four years, he has played for the Cleveland Indians (2018), Atlanta Braves (2019), and the Minnesota Twins (2020-2021).

Nick Wosika-USA TODAY Sports

Throughout his college career on the Plains, Donaldson played both catcher and third base. In his freshman season, he played in 39 games at third base. He would hit seven home runs with 26 runs batted in. His average was .294. In 2006, his sophomore season, he hit 10 home runs with 42 runs batted in. The success increased during his junior season where he would go on to hit 11 home runs with 54 runs batted in. Another interesting fact to note is his .349 batting average. I guess you could say that Donaldson has seen success at both the collegiate and professional levels.

His time at Auburn helped him become the slugger that the world now sees. Over the span of his career, he has launched 251 home runs. That means that over the span of his eleven-year career, he has averaged 22.8 home runs per season.

You could definitely say that Donaldson is one of the more premier talents to have ever played at Auburn. He is one of many Tigers that have played in the MLB. Other players like Tim Hudson, David Ross, and Frank Thomas are also former Tigers that saw their own success at the professional level.

Auburn fans certainly hope that Donaldson’s success translates to the Yankees. He has definitely made the Auburn faithful very proud.

Watch the Twins’ Willians Astudillo throw a 46 MPH pitch for a strike

Willians Astudillo is a certified pitcher now

Willians Astudillo can do it all for the Twins. He primarily plays catcher, but he’s also seen time at both first and second base already this season for the Twins.

Apparently, I guess, he’s a pitcher, too. With the Twins down 10-3 to the Angels on Friday, they called upon Astudillo to pull them through a couple of innings. Might as well, right? Things can’t get any worse.

So he took the mound. And he tossed a pitch at 46 miles per hour. And…it worked.

That’s right. A 46 MPH pitch somehow made it past the plate in a Major League Baseball game. Unbelievable.

That’s not all, though. He actually threw a perfect 1-2-3 inning on seven pitches. That’s…pretty great! Especially for a position player.

And look at how slick this fastball is. It’s pretty remarkable.

Just incredible stuff from La Tortuga. This is the best.

Shaquem Griffin stays in Seattle as Seahawks add him to practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks waived linebacker Shaquem Griffin during initial roster cuts but were able to add him back to the practice squad.

The Seahawks waived fan-favorite defensive end/ linebacker Shaquem Griffin during initial roster cuts on Saturday but were able to add him back to the practice squad Sunday morning. Griffin will remain in Seattle for now with his twin brother, cornerback Shaquill Griffin.

Seattle selecting the Griffin brothers in back to back NFL drafts made for a number of heartwarming stories for football fans around the league. The twins also spent their college days together playing for the University of Central Florida Knights.

Griffin became the first one-handed player to be drafted into the NFL in the modern area.

In Seattle, he has has been utilized on mostly special teams but was given a test run rotating in at the edge position last season to bolter the Seahawks’ pass rush. Perhaps another year will help with his development as he continues to make his case for the active roster.

Griffin’s twin, Shaquill, will be playing in the final year of his rookie contract and also has every reason to continue to compete.

Report: Seahawks waiving DE/LB Shaquem Griffin, Shaquill’s twin brother

The Seattle Seahawks are waiving defensive end/linebacker Shaquem Griffin, twin brother to cornerback Shaquill Griffin, per multiple reports.

The Seattle Seahawks are placing one of their most popular players on waivers, parting ways with defensive end/linebacker, Shaquem Griffin.

“The Seahawks are waiving DE/LB Shaquem Griffin, per source. A 2018 fifth-round pick, Shaquem seemed to have found a home as a pass-rusher/strongside LB, but now heā€™ll be available on waivers,” Michael-Shawn Dugar of the Athletic tweeted Saturday morning. “An aside: His twin bro Shaquill is in a contract year.”

Other media outlets have since confirmed the report.

Seattle selected Griffin in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of the University of Central Florida, where he played with his twin brother, cornerback, Shaquill Griffin. Shaquill was drafted by the Seahawks in the third round just the year before.

The Seahawks undoubtedly hope Griffin will clear waivers and can be added back to the practice squad keeping the fan-favorite twins together in Seattle.

This story is continuing to develop.

These teens just discovered ‘Feel it in the Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins and it’s great

It went how you’d expect it to go.

Music evolves quickly. Sounds shift, artist’s attitudes and styles change. That reflects itself through the art they create that pushes genres forward year after year.

But every once in a while, an artist creates an absolute masterpiece. A song that, no matter what time or era it’s played in, it’s going to go up.

Phil Collins’Ā Feel it in the Air Tonight is absolutely one of those songs. It came out in 1980 and still slaps 40 years later.

As a young Black boy who grew up listening to Hip Hop with absolutely zero interest in soft rock, I can attest. When this joint comes on, whoever has the aux is required to cut it all the way up.

Don’t take my word for it, though. Fred and Tim Williams, two 21-year old twins who review music on YouTube, played it for the first time themselves. Their verdict? It slaps.

Nah, that’s so relatable. Every single thing about it. Everyone has been down that road with this song before. Just hearing Collins’ electronic voice on the track carries you through to the beat drop after three minutes and then your soul leaves your body and you look something like this.

Yup. Looks about right. This was HILARIOUS to watch just because we’ve literally all been there with this song before.

The internet absolutely loved them discovering this song.

OF COURSE all the old heads love it. People love to get in their “what you know about this one here, youngin?!?!” bag. It’s no shock that they’re elated to see them listening to Collins.

They have more of these things on their YouTube channel, too. They’ve doneĀ JoleneĀ by Dolly Parton.

Hilarious. And also correct ā€” Jolene definitely slaps.

So much fun to watch. Shoutout to them for building this platform and putting people on to new music.

St. Louis Cardinals at Minnesota Twins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Minnesota Twins sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The St. Louis Cardinals (2-1) visit the Minnesota Twins (2-1) for the first of two games at Target Field Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. ET. We analyze the Cardinals-Twins MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Cardinals at Twins: Projected starting pitchers

RHPĀ Carlos Martinez vs. RHP Homer Bailey

Martinez will make his first start since July of 2018. He worked out of the bullpen last year, recording a 3.17 ERA with 24 saves in 48 appearances (48 1/3 IP).

  • Martinez averaged just about an inning per appearance in 2019, but has built up his workload again. He worked four effective innings in an exhibition game against the Royals last week, and should go a little longer against the Twins if he’s pitching effectively.
  • Martinez has faced the Twins just twice in his career, allowing three earned runs with eight punch outs in 11 2/3 innings. Facing this version of the Twins will be a tall task, as they finished second in runs and first in home runs in 2019.

Bailey will be making his Minnesota regular-season debut. In 31 starts a season ago for the Kansas City Royals and Oakland A’s, he went 13-9 with a 4.57 ERA.

  • Bailey had a 4.30 ERA after a July trade to Oakland last season. A splitter-heavy approach really helped him thrive down the stretch, when he posted a 2.25 ERA and a strikeout per inning over his final eight starts.
  • Historically, he has really struggled against the Cardinals. In 28 career starts against St. Louis, he is 6-16 with a 5.80 ERA and allowed 1.6 home runs per nine innings.

Prediction

Cardinals 5, Twins 4

Moneyline (ML)

The Twins (-150) boast the stronger lineup, and Bailey showed excellent skills during the final two months of 2019. However, he’s far from a sure thing to carry that level of success over to 2020, and few would argue that St. Louis will be sending the better pitcher to the mound in this contest. Side with the CARDINALS (+135) in this one.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Cardinals returns a profit of $13.50 ā€“ in other words, every $1 bet on the Cards will profit $1.35 if they win.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Looking at the run line, the Cardinals check in at +1.5 (-154), while the Twins have odds of -1.5 (+125). Neither side of this bet looks all that appealing, soĀ PASSĀ on the run line.

Over/Under (O/U)

Martinez has some questions heading into 2020, after handling a rather small workload last season. But he always displays strong skills, and should at least be able to keep the potent Minnesota lineup in check while he’s in there.

Bailey, meanwhile, looked very good himself when we last saw him. He’s facing an offense that was below average in 2019, both in terms of runs scored and most of the advanced metrics. Look for this game to end up UNDER 10.5 (-110)Ā the total.

Alerick Soularie signs with Twins

Alerick Soularie signs with Twins.

MINNEAPOLIS — Former University of Tennessee baseball player Alerick Soularie has signed with the Minnesota Twins.

Soularie, an outfielder for the Volunteers, was a preseason All-American and preseason All-Southeastern Conference selection in 2020.

He was Minnesota’s second-round pick in the recent 2020 Major League Baseball draft. The Twins drafted him with the 59th overall pick.

Soularie received a $900,000 signing bonus when he joined the Twins organization late last month. The bonus was below his slotted value of $1.19 million.

During his playing career with the Diamond Vols, Soularie batted .336 over two seasons.

He came to Knoxville after playing his freshman season in the community college ranks for San Jacinto in Texas.

He helped the Big Orange make its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005 as a sophomore in 2019.

The Vols, who were 15-2 when the coronavirus pandemic brought a premature end to the 2020 campaign, went 40-21 in 2019.

2020 MLB Futures Odds: How many games will the Minnesota Twins win?

Looking at 2020 MLB futures odds for how many games the Minnesota Twins will win in the 60-game MLB season.

How many games will the Minnesota Twins win in the 60-game 2020 MLB season? We look at the Twins MLB futures odds, including their projected 2020 win total and Over/Under odds at BetMGM, and make our best bet.

Minnesota Twins’ 2019 recap

The Twins finished with the fourth-best record in MLB last season, going 101-61 and winning the American League Central. They were 50-26 against their division and 88-74 against the run line in the regular season, bouncing back in a big way after finishing below .500 (78-84) in 2018.

They overpowered teams with a loaded lineup, too, having eight players with at least 20 home runs. The pitching staff wasn’t as dominant, but SP Jose Berrios had a good season, as did SP Jake Odorizzi.

Minnesota Twins’Ā offseason

The Twins made some additions to their rotation this offseason by signing SPx Homer Bailey and SP Rich Hill. They also brought back Odorizzi and SP Michael Pineda. Their biggest move was the signing of 3B Josh Donaldson, who fills a void at the hot corner.

Minnesota’s bullpen was fortified by the additions of RP Sergio Romo and RP Tyler Clippard.

Minnesota Twins’ 2020 schedule

The 2020 season will begin Thursday, July 23, and end Sept. 27. The Twins will play their 60 games against the Central divisions ā€“ 40 against the AL Central and the other 20 against the National League Central.

Those are two difficult divisions, but the Twins will get some relief by playing the rival Detriot Tigers and Kansas City Royals 10 times each.

How many games will the Minnesota Twins win in 2020?

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sportsā€™ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday, July 7 at 10 a.m. ET.

The Twins’ 2020 projected win total is set at 34.5, one of the highest projections in the league. If the Twins were to win 35 games, it would be a winning percentage of at least .583, which they’ve only reached once since 2007 ā€“ last year, when they had a mark of .623.

With the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox also in the AL Central, it could be tough for Minnesota to win more than 35 games. But they’re clearly the favorites in the division, so I’d bet the OVER (-110).

Minnesota Twins’ World Series odds

The Twins are +1600 to win the World Series, which are the fifth-best odds of any team. With the power they have in their lineup and the expected improvement from the starting rotation, the Twins are understandably among the favorites to win it all.

They’re worth a bet to win the World Series after last season’s impressive regular-season run. A $10 bet would return a profit of $160.

Minnesota Twins’ playoff odds

The Twins are the favorites to win the AL Central at -159, ahead of the Indians (+300) and White Sox (+320). Cleveland and Chicago both look like contenders, but the Twins are still the best team in the Central.

They should make the postseason, even in the shortened season, and it would be wise to bet on them to win the division ā€“ even with a relatively unfavorable line.
