Celtics president Brad Stevens spotted at Turkey-France EuroBasket game

What Stevens was doing there was umclear, though he very well could have been scouting an old friend in Guerschon Yabusele or some other prospect.

If you thought it was just you paying more attention to the quadrennial European Basketball Championship — better known as the EuroBasket — than you ever have before, you might be surprised to learn even some of the Boston Celtics’ top brass are as well.

In fact, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has an eye on the goings-on in EuroBasket action, the former Boston head coach turning up in the audience for the knockout phase contest between the French National Team and the Turkish National Team, confirmed via a FIBA tweet. What Stevens was doing there was umclear, though he very well could have been scouting an old friend in Guerschon Yabusele or some other prospect.

He might also have simply been there to enjoy the game, though knowing the Celtics exec, that seems the least plausible scenario of the above.

Yabu, Fournier, Poirier send fellow former Celtic Larkin fishing as France defeats Turkey, 87-86 in OT

Three Celtics alumni on the court is worth more than one on the bench, it seems.

With former Boston Celtic Shane Larkin out injured with ligament damage in his hand, per Eurohoops, Turkey fell to France, 87-86, in overtime during the knockout stage of EuroBasket 2022 on Saturday.

On France’s side of the scoreboard, former Celtics shooting guard Evan Fournier put up 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in an inefficient outing that saw him commit four turnovers and shoot 38.5% from the field. Ex-Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele added 9 points, 3 assists and a steal in what was a relatively quiet game from the former No. 16 pick.

Center Vincent “Sexpants” Poirier chipped in 6 points off the bench in the nail-biter that kept the French alive.

The news of Larkin’s injury likely explains much of his shooting woes in recent games for Turkey. The former Miami player is expected to be able to return to action in two months after undergoing surgery.

“The goal is the gold medal but now the goal and focus is our next game in what’s probably the best EuroBasket,” said France’s Rudy Gobert after the game

Low-scoring night for former Celtics Hernangomez, Larkin as Spain defeats Turkey, 72-69, in EuroBasket play

Boston alumni Shane Larkin and Juancho Hernangomez combined for just 11 points as Larkin’s Turkey fell to Hernangomez’s Spain.

On a night when both former Boston Celtics in the contest had relatively low-scoring games, floor general Shane Larkin and big man Juancho Hernangomez combined for 11 points in Turkey’s 72-69 loss to Spain in EuroBasket play.

For Spain, Hernangomez put up 8 points, 7 rebounds an assist and a block. He committed one foul and one turnover in just over 18 minutes of play off the bench. For Turkey, Larkin’s shooting woes continued. The onetime Miami player added 3 points on 1-of-6 shooting.

Larkin also contributed 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and a steal in the loss, fouling twice and turning the ball over once in just under 31 minutes of game time.

With the win, Spain improves to 4-1 in Group A to take the top spot while Turkey drops to 3-2 in Group A and is in second.

Boston Celtics alum Shane Larkin has quiet game in Turkey’s 78-63 win over Belgium

The Miami product put up just 3 points, 4 boards, 6 assists, and 2 steals in over 30 minutes of play.

Despite a quiet night on offense from former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin, his Turkish National Team managed to defeat the Belgian National Team on Tuesday morning, the Miami product finding other ways to help his team to a 78-63 win over Belgium in Group A EuroBasket play.

The Celtics alumnus put up and made just one 2-point field goal attempt in the contest despite playing for just over 32 minutes of game time, and got to the free throw line once, splitting his attempts for a total of just 3 points in the victory for Turkey. Larkin instead focused on being more of a pure point guard in this game with a total of 6 assists, perhaps out of concern with his rough shooting contest in Turkey’s loss to Georgia on Sunday.

The Cincinnati native also had 4 rebounds and 2 steals to go with as many turnovers and no personal fouls.

Boston alum Shane Larkin has off night as his Turkey falls to Georgia 88-83 in double overtime

The former Celtics reserve floor general had trouble shooting the ball in EuroBasket play Sunday, and it cost Turkey the game.

Former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin had an egregiously bad shooting day while manning the point for the Turkish National Team on Sunday afternoon. Turkey fell 88-83 to the Georgian National Team in double overtime in part due to the former Miami player’s difficulties putting the proverbial biscuit in the basket.

Larkin put up 9 points, 8 boards, 7 assists and a steal in a game that seemed like nothing was going right for the former Boston point guard. While he did not pick up any personal fouls in the painful loss marred by a fight between teammate Furkan Korkmaz and three Georgian players, Larkin shot 2-of-14 from the field overall and 2-of-10 from 3-point range.

The former Celtic was on the floor for 48:54 of 50 possible minutes of the double-overtime affair.

Trio of Boston Celtics among HoopsHype’s best NBA players at EuroBasket

There is no shortage of Boston Celtics alumni among those NBAers taking part in FIBA play around the globe.

While you can’t see NBA basketball early in the month of September all too often outside of the random pandemic-interrupted season, you can see NBA basketball players playing ball, most of which happen to be taking part of late in FIBA competitions like the EuroBasket and AmeriCup competitions.

They are, of course, among if not always the best players on their respective National Teams, and there is no shortage of Boston Celtics alumni among those NBAers taking part in FIBA play around the globe. And according to a recent assessment done by the folks over at HoopsHype, there are a handful of Celtics alumni among the best NBA players at the EuroBasket.

Let’s take a look at which alumni they are — and where they rate in H/H’s estimation.

Celtics alum Shane Larkin gets 13 points, 9 assists for Turkey in 101-87 EuroBasket win over Bulgaria

EuroLeague star and Celtics alum Shane Larkin continues to shine abroad.

Former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin helped lift his Turkish National Team to a 101-87 win over the Bulgarian National Team on Saturday in another solid victory for Turkey in Group A of EuroBasket play despite a slow start in the first half.

The Miami product put up 13 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists, and a steal in 28:35 minutes of floor time, turning the ball over just once, and committing two personal fouls. The Celtics alumnus had a bit of a rough night shooting the ball, going just 2-of-8 from the field overall, 1-of-6 from 3-point range, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe to help make up for his yips from elsewhere on the court.

“I didn’t shoot the ball well tonight,” said Larkin in an interview with Eurohoops after the game. “So, I just tried to start attacking more in the second half.”

Alperen Sengun embracing tough practices with Rockets assistant John Lucas

“We’re doing tough practices, because we’re working with John Lucas,” Alperen Sengun says of Houston’s assistant coach. “He’s crazy, and his practice is crazy too.”

HOUSTON — Rockets rookie center Alperen Sengun surprised the media in attendance in Thursday’s community event at Moody Community Center. The Turkish-born 19-year-old spent most of his first year learning the NBA game, and also the English language on the side.

In English, the No. 16 overall selection in the 2021 NBA draft answered questions about his busy offseason schedule and how good it feels to be back with his teammates. That’s quite an accomplishment for an individual who has been in the United States for less than a year.

Although he traveled back home after the Rockets finished their regular season schedule, he still practiced improving his second language.

Sengun will now put his English lessons on hold for a bit, as his basketball schedule will be packed over the next three months. He will spend the next two weeks working out at Toyota Center with teammates and assistant coaches, including exclusive work with John Lucas.

“We’re doing tough practices because we’re working with John Lucas, you know, he’s crazy, and his practice is crazy too,” said Sengun. “I did practice in Turkey but not like this, just lifting and running.”

After completing his time in Houston, Sengun heads back to Turkey to play for the Turkish National Team as they prepare for the FIBA World Cup qualifiers. Before being drafted in July 2021, he put on an impressive showing for the national team at the FIBA EuroBasket2022 Qualifiers, helping Turkey secure two wins over Sweden and Croatia. In September, he will travel back to Europe to play in the EuroBasket tournament.

Sengun is looking to improve upon the 9.6 points and 5.5 rebounds (20.7 minutes) that he averaged over 72 games played last season with the Rockets. His head coach believes that his jam-packed schedule, which includes a lot of basketball, will help him achieve that growth.

“Playing games is always great, and meaningful games is even better,” Rockets head coach Stephen Silas said at Moody Community Center. “As far as being in shape and having timing at the beginning of season, he’ll have it, so we’re all for it and we’re supporting him in that.”
