Redskins appear prepared to follow Cardinals’ example in 2020 draft

With the 2nd pick in this draft, hey are taking a look at the top QBs in the draft despite drafting Dwayne Haskins last year.

A year ago at this time, the Arizona Cardinals had hired new coach Kliff Kingsbury under the idea he would develop 2018 first-round quarterback Josh Rosen. However, with the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft, the focus began to be about Kyler Murray, especially with how much Kingsbury was enamored with him as a player.

Rosen had started 13 games as a rookie and struggled. However, Kingsbury declared that Rosen was “their guy” and praised him effusively for how he was handling everything. He showed up and didn’t complain. He was at every workout and was preparing the way the team wanted him to.

However, ultimately, they drafted Murray first overall and traded Rosen then traded Rosen the next day.

The Washington Redskins appear ready to go down the same path.

Last year, they drafted quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the first round. He struggled. The Redskins fired their coach and hired a new one like the Cardinals.

Washington doesn’t have the first overall pick, but they do have the second pick.

And now things are beginning to play out like in Arizona.

New head coach Ron Rivera praised Haskins for his work ethic this offseason. He called him a “good young player” and noted how much he is in the building.

This sounds a lot like the Rosen situation. Kingsbury praised Rosen and his work ethic. He spoke of him as a promising young quarterback.

Now, there is also this from the Redskins. They are meeting with quarterback prospects Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa.

And, according to Rivera, these are real meetings. He likes Haskins, but all options are on the table.

The Cardinals drafted Murray because they felt they couldn’t pass on the special talent he was.

Burrow and Tagovailoa are seen as top prospects. It would not be a surprise if the Redskins ended up taking one or the other with the second overall pick. They could let him and Haskins compete. They could trade Haskins.

And it is what they should do. If they view either quarterback as a future star, they should do what the Cardinals did. And if they are right, it will never matter.

It sure looks like there will be exactly zero regrets in Arizona for what they did.

Cardinals aided with Tua Tagovailoa entering NFL draft

If he is selected in the first seven picks, it leaves an additional talented non-QB to be available for the Cardinals at No. 8.

The NFL draft got a little more interesting on Monday with the decision of Alabama quarterback Tua Tagavailoa to declare for the draft. Despite suffering a hip injury that required surgery, he is still is expected to be a high pick.

Entering 2019, he was expected to be the top pick in the draft but multiple injuries got in the way. However, it is still quite possible he will go before the Arizona Cardinals make their selection at No. 8.

Since the Cardinals will not be looking for a quarterback themselves, the more QBs that are taken before the eighth pick means more possibilities outside the position for the Cardinals to choose from.

As many as five teams who select before the Cardinals could decide to go with a quarterback between the Bengals, Lions, Dolphins, Chargers and Panthers.

Tua’s addition also increases the possibility of a team wishing to trade up, giving the Cardinals more picks.

With a number of needs to fill, that isn’t a bad possibility.

As of now, early projections seem to have the Cardinals in line to take a top receiver or a top offensive lineman, both of which are considered needs for 2020.

2020 NFL draft: Chargers are officially locked into No. 6 overall pick

This will mark the third time that the Los Angeles Chargers have picked within the top-10 in the past 15 years.

The 2019 regular season has come to an end for the Los Angeles Chargers and now all the attention has shifted to the offseason.

It’s official. The Chargers will pick sixth overall in the 2020 NFL draft. They were slated to pick seventh, but a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars bumped them up one slot.

This will mark the third time that the Bolts have picked within the top-10 in the past 15 years.

With how high they are picking, the Chargers will have plenty of the premiere prospects available when they are on the clock.

Whether or not Philip Rivers is back next season, L.A. will be in an ideal position where they could snag their future face of the franchise, with players like Tua Tagavailoa, Justin Herbert or Jordan Love.

The team could also look to address the offensive line with someone like Andrew Thomas, Tristan Wirfs or Jedrick Wills.
