Texas to make Troy Tulowitzki the new hitting coach following Michael Earley’s quick departure

New Texas HC Jim Schlossnagle expected to retain Troy Tulowitzki as hitting coach

It’s hard to put into words the craziness that has transpired in the past week for the Texas Longhorns baseball program, but as all of the dust begins to settle, it is becoming evident they made the right decision.

On the day of Game 3 in the CWS final, rumors started trickling out that Texas A&M head coach Jim Scholssnagle was high on Chris Del Conte’s list of replacements for David Pierce on the Forty Acres. Not even 24 hours later the Longhorns had their man. To make matters even better, it was expected that a large part of his staff and roster would be following him to Austin.

As part of that move, it was anticipated that hitting coach Michael Earley would take over the same position at Texas which would have relieved former MLB veteran Troy Tulowitzki of his duties. However, in a shocking turn of events, the Aggies decided to keep Earley on the A&M payroll and hire him as the next head coach.

For Coach Schloss, it was a bummer not to bring a guy as talented as Earley, but it’s always awesome to see one of your guys get promoted.

Ultimately, Earley’s decision to take the job in College Station may be the best thing for everyone as the Longhorns will now be able to retain the five-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger. Tulowitzki has also spent time working with the USA Baseball team and knows the game as well as literally anybody on Earth.

After serving with the Longhorns from 2020-2022 Tulowitzki and Texas parted ways, but he rejoined the staff ahead of the 2024 season as the Director of Player Development.

Report: Troy Tulowitzki will not return to Texas next season

Texas baseball is going to look drastically different in 2023.

Texas baseball is going to look drastically different in 2023.

The Longhorns will likely be forced to replace double-digit key contributors from this season’s squad including All-Americans Ivan Melendez and Murphy Stehly.

The coaching staff is also going through a major shake-up. David Pierce decided to let go of pitching coach Sean Allen at the end of the season after the Texas pitching staff struggled with consistency most of the year.

Volunteer assistant coach Troy Tulowitzki is also heading out the door.

Tulowitzki did fantastic in his role helping take Texas’ offense to new heights over the past couple of seasons. The Longhorns broke nearly every offensive stat in school history this season en route to a second straight College World Series trip.

Tulo played a huge role in the development of the Texas infielders from a defensive standpoint. Texas finished with a top-five fielding percentage in back-to-back seasons.

Two Longhorns Assistants Look To Bring Texas To The Top

Troy Tulowitzki and former Longhorn great Huston Street look to bring the Texas baseball team back to the top of the baseball world.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team is looking for a return to prominence. The Longhorns haven’t had a championship season since 2005 although they came close in 2009 as a runner up to champion Louisiana State Tigers. After a four-year absence from the championship tournament the boys in Austin returned to the tourney in 2019 but were quickly eliminated after two games.

For this season, Texas looks to regain their magic and become one of the top teams not only in the Big 12 but in all of the NCAA. This season they will have a couple new voices in the room to help them along the way. Huston Street has joined the staff as a student assistant. Many fans will remember Street who helped lead the Longhorns to the title in 2002 and the semifinals in 2004. The Longhorns pitching staff will be able to lean on his experience as both a champion in the CWS and in Major League Baseball.

Another big name on this staff that will be key is Troy Tulowitzki who joined the staff after ending his 14-year career in the majors. Tulo much like Street has a plethora of knowledge and experience that he can share with the team that can only help them as they try to bring Texas back to the top of the college baseball world. It all starts February 1st with the Alumni game.

In 2020 the Longhorns will likely need to be better than they were a year ago with a 7-16 conference record. However, given how they performed in the postseason, don’t count out another magical run by the Longhorns.
