Seahawks add another DT to roster at the end of rookie minicamp

According to a report by Aaron Wilson, Seattle signed Troy defensive tackle Buddha Jones at the end of minicamp.

On Friday the Seahawks announced that they had signed 16 undrafted free agents. That put the roster at 89 players going into rookie minicamp, leaving one spot open. Apparently they have already found somebody to fill it.

According to a report by Aaron Wilson, Seattle signed Troy defensive tackle Buddha Jones at the end of minicamp.

Jones (6-foot-3, 281 pounds) played one season at Kent State before transferring to Troy in 2021. Over the last two years there he totaled 6.5 tackles for a loss, two pass breakups and three fumbles recovered. He also scored one defensive touchdown.

To start out, Jones should probably considered the last man at the bottom of the interior defensive line depth chart.

Here’s 44 minutes of Jones you didn’t know you needed.

Texas A&M senior WR Jabre Barber proclaims lofty, yet realistic goal after transferring from Troy

“I feel like I can go for 50 catches and I want to get past that 1,000-yard mark,” Barber admitted. “I know I have to put in a lot of work.”

Texas A&M senior wide receiver Jabre Barber has been an Aggie for just over a week but he’s already formed a lofty goal for the upcoming season in College Station.

Barber chose Texas A&M in the NCAA Transfer Portal on Jan. 5. This week he spoke with Carter Karels, the Aggies beat writer for 247Sports, about his plans for the 2024 campaign.

“There is not a guaranteed role. It is about coming in and being your best. I know I am up to compete,” Barber told Karels. “I can be versatile. I can play in the slot, as well as the outside, motion out of the backfield. Or as a wide receiver, motioning over and pulling me to the end to where I can just work as a 1-on-1 player between me and the DB. I can be all over the field, not just in the slot. I can do more than that and show my versatility.”

Barber is 5-foot-10, 174 pounds and was a 2-star prospect coming out of Dothan High School in Alabama. He took a redshirt year in 2020 after appearing in three games at Troy.

Over the last three years, Barber has racked up the statistics for the Trojans. In 32 games, he tallied 132 receptions for 1,674 yards and 10 touchdowns. A majority of those numbers came this past year. During the 2023 season, he recorded 75 catches for 999 yards and 5 scores, just barely falling short of 1K.

“When I got into the locker room and looked at my phone I am in a group chat with my close buddies. They were telling me, ‘You had 999 yards. You were one yard short.’ I am just like, ‘Whoa, what?'” Barber recalled. “I feel like I can go for 50 catches and I want to get past that 1,000-yard mark. I know I have to put in a lot of work. But I have a lot of belief in myself that I can do that and prove to my quarterback, Conner Weigman, that he can trust me to throw me the ball.”

Barber explained to Karels that associate head coach and running backs coach, Trooper Taylor, made a significant impact in his decision to play home games at Kyle Field.

“Sitting down and talking with the coaches, it started to feel a little bit like home,” Barber said. “The Duke coach, coach Trooper, he talked to me a lot. He made me feel like home a little bit more. So that is what made me a little more comfortable, how they made me feel welcome.”

Breaking: Former Troy OL Derrick Graham will transfer to Texas A&M

Texas A&M lands Former Troy Offensive Lineman Derrick Graham through the transfer portal

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is on fire in the transfer portal and is hitting on some major positions of need—this time he hit on the offensive side of the ball.

To boost the offensive line and give the Aggie quarterbacks a little more time to find their receiver, the A&M has been able to nab Former Troy starting left tackle Derrick Graham over teams like Ohio State, Pittsburg, and Missouri.

Graham is a versatile athlete who can play multiple across the line and according to PFF, he grades out as a better passer protector than a run blocker. Either way, bringing him into the fold will allow Coach Adam Cushing the opportunity to experiment with different line combinations this spring.

The Aggies are already in the Top Ten in the 247 Sports transfer rankings, and there will be more to come as Coach Elko drops his signature Money Manziel meme on X (Twitter) for future commits.

Former Troy star wide receiver Jabre Barber commits to Texas A&M

As Aggies sophomore wide receiver Evan Stewart takes a transfer portal tour around the country to find his next home, head coach Mike Elko has been searching for his replacement.

As Texas A&M sophomore wide receiver Evan Stewart takes a transfer portal tour around the country to find his next home, combined with Ainias Smith’s NFL Draft announcement,  Aggies head coach Mike Elko has been searching for multiple replacements.

Holomon Wiggins, the new co-offensive coordinator & wideouts coach, and Elko appear to have found their new receiving stud. On Friday night, former Troy star Jabre Barber announced that he has committed to continuing his collegiate career in Bryan-College Station for the Aggies.

The junior wide receiver is 5-foot-10, 174 pounds and was a 2-star prospect coming out of Dothan High School in Alabama. Barber took a redshirt year in 2020 after appearing in three games.

Over the last three years, Barber has racked up the statistics for the Trojans. In 32 games, he tallied 132 receptions for 1,674 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Report: Former Troy WR Jabre Barber set to visit Texas A&M

According to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, former standout Troy WR Jabre Barber has scheduled a visit with Texas A&M among other suitors.

With now eight players acquired through the transfer portal, new Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is looking to make another splash on offense after offering former Troy star wide receiver Jabre Barber, who, according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, has finalized a visit to College Station.

On paper, the Aggies’ have cleaned up at the WR position, already landing Javon Harvey (Old Dominion) and Cyrus Allen (LA Tech), who are deemed to make significant impacts as soon as the 2024 season, however, with the departure of Ainias Smith, who declared for the 2024 NFL Draft, and sophomore receiver Evan Stewart, who is currently in the transfer portal.

After three years in Alabama, Barber, who stands at 5’10” and weighs 174 pounds, has shown the ability to play at all three receiver spots and has the speed to beat coverage deep, already accumulating 1,674 yards and ten touchdowns through the air, including 999 yards and five touchdowns during his 2023 junior season.

Texas A&M is poised to return wide receivers Moose Muhammad, Noah Thomas, Jahdae Walker, and Micah Tease next season, as both Muhammad and Walker combined for 205 yards in A&M’s 31-23 loss to Oklahoma State in the TaxAct Texas Bowl on Dec. 27.

Troy coach Jon Sumrall threw a ferocious tantrum over a possible missed call during Sun Belt title game

Well, someone needs a nap.

Troy football coach Jon Sumrall absolutely blew his top on the sideline of the Sun Belt Championship game on Saturday.

After what looked like a missed facemak call on opponent Appalachian State, Sumrall ran onto the field and screamed at the referees as some of the other people on the Troy sideline tried to hold him back.

Sumrall pushed on and argued with someone on his team during his sideline tirade for smartly trying to restrain him. The irate coach also did a facemask pulling motion in front of his face to try and communicate what he thought the penalty was.

If you’re looking at the most epic coaching meltdown this season, don’t look to Miami and Mario Cristobal. Look right to Troy and Sumrall for that honor.

While we understand that referees can make outrageously bad calls and miss blatant penalties, Sumrall’s temper tantrum just felt completely unnecessary.

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl What Happened

UTSA got up 12-0 on a Troy snap out of the end zone for a safety, and helped by a two-yard Frank Harris touchdown pass to Zaire Franklin. That was it for the Roadrunner scores as mistake after mistake proved costly.

Troy scored 19 unanswered points, highlighted by a Gunnar Watson 12-yard touchdown pass to RaJae Johnson to capitalize off a Keyshawn Swanson pick near the end zone to stall a UTSA drive.

– UTSA is going to be kicking itself for this one. It had a 12-0, but turned it over five times, got hit with nine penalties – one big one that kept a drive alive – and allowed a fake punt for a first down, and yet it had chance after chance to take over. UTSA’s offense suffered drop after drop – not helped by some questionable play calls – along with all of those mistakes. However …

Give the Trojans credit. The offense didn’t work all that well, the defense bent a bit too much, and they couldn’t put the game away despite all the UTSA errors. The defense came up with stop after stop, overcame its own mistakes, and got the thrilling bowl win.

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl What It All Means

Troy closed out one of its best – if not the strongest – seasons in the program’s history, and it was the strongest in the 22 years since moving up to the FCS world. Not bad for Jon Sumrall’s first season. Along with a Sun Belt Championship and now a Cure Bowl win, the 12 wins push pass the 11-2 2017 season. This also makes it five straight bowl wins going back to 2010.

UTSA was fantastic all season long, and it had this game in its hands, but couldn’t come through. It was still a fantastic season with a Conference USA title, but the program is still winless in bowl games – 0-4 losing the last three years – and it wasn’t able to match last year’s 12-2 season.

App State’s miraculous deflected Hail Mary to beat Troy had college football fans in awe

App State pulled off a miracle play!

Just when it looked like Appalachian State was about to lose its second game of the season Saturday against Troy at home, the Mountaineers pulled off a miraculous Hail Mary with basically no time left in the game.

Down 28-24 with 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter — and after an exuberant day that included a visit from ESPN’s College GameDay, App State students winning free tuition and a strong roasting of Texas A&M, which lost to the Mountaineers in Week 2 — App State started its final drive on its own 47-yard line. And it needed to make some quick moves.

Luckily for them, quarterback Chase Brice followed a series of three incomplete passes with a nail-biting heave downfield on 4th-and-10 with two seconds on the clock. Just shy of the goal line with bodies everywhere, the pass was deflected at about the five-yard line, landing perfectly in the hands of wide receiver Christan Horn.

With the help of some stellar blocking from his teammates, Horn had a clear path to the end zone for a 53-yard touchdown, waltzing in to deliver the 32-28 victory over the Trojans.

What a dazzling miracle of a play from App State, and it was absolute pandemonium afterward.
