Tristan Connelly out of UFC 267 fight against Makwan Amirkhani

Makwan Amirkhani will need a new opponent for UFC 267.

[autotag]Makwan Amirkhani[/autotag] will need a new opponent for UFC 267.

According to Amirkhani, [autotag]Tristan Connelly[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is out of their Oct. 30 fight in Abu Dhabi due to undisclosed reasons. MMA Junkie confirmed the news with a person with knowledge of the situation who asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Amirkhani (16-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC), who is expected to remain on the card, took to Instagram to react to the news.

“Yes he is out. It’s a sad story cause it would have been a great matchup between me and Tristan. He said in a interview that he is not expecting that same Makwan what we have been seeing in my last fights. “We will see a hungry Amirkhani. Tristan you where right on that one brother and now I’m even more hungrier! I’m the flow. 30.10.2021 #ufc.”

Amirkhani is looking to snap a two-fight losing skid after dropping back-to-back unanimous decision losses to Edson Barboza and Kamuela Kirk. Prior to that, “Mr. Finland” picked up a first-round submission of Danny Henry at UFC 251.

Canada’s Connelly was also looking to get back in the win column. After upsetting Michel Pereira in his promotional debut, Connelly returned from a 19-month layoff due to injury, but fell short in his featherweight debut when he was defeated by former CFFC champion Pat Sabatini at UFC 261 in April.

With the change, the UFC 267 lineup includes:

  • Champ Jan Blachowicz vs. Glover Teixeira – for light heavyweight title

UFC 261 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday was one for the record books.

All three winners of the championship bouts made a mark on the record books, but none bigger than [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] (19-1 MMA, 14-0 UFC), who extended his epic run inside the octagon with a second-round knockout of rival [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] (35-15 MMA, 12-8 UFC) in the main event.

Tristan Connelly returns from injury layoff, fights Pat Sabatini at UFC 261

UFC 261 has gained a lightweight fight.

[autotag]Tristan Connelly[/autotag] has his first fight booked after undergoing neck surgery months ago.

For the first time since his UFC debut in September 2019, Connelly (14-6 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will return to competition and fight [autotag]Pat Sabatini[/autotag] at UFC 261 on April 24. The event takes place at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking, but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Connelly made his UFC debut on short notice up a weight class against viral sensation Michel Perreira. An unfamiliar name to most at the time, Connelly entered the fight against Perreira as a sizable underdog. Despite the odds, Connelly stuck to the fundamentals and handed the high-flying Perreira his first UFC loss by unanimous decision.

Sabatini (13-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) signed with the promotion earlier this year as a short-notice replacement to fight Rafael Alves at UFC Fight Night 185 in February, but his fight was canceled when Alves missed weight by 11.5 pounds.

The CFFC featherweight champion, Sabatini enters his UFC debut on a two-fight winning streak. His lone loss in his most recent six fights came due to an arm injury in February 2020.

With the addition, the UFC 261 lineup includes:

  • Champ Kamaru Usman vs. Jorge Masvidal – for welterweight title
  • Champ Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Andrade – for women’s flyweight title
  • Champ Zhang Weili vs. Rose Namajunas – for strawweight title
  • Uriah Hall vs. Chris Weidman
  • Jimmy Crute vs. Anthony Smith
  • Randy Brown vs. Alex Oliveira
  • Brendan Allen vs. Karl Roberson
  • Danaa Batgerel vs. Kevin Natividad
  • Qileng Aori vs. Jeffrey Molina
  • Johnny Munoz vs. Jamey Simmons
  • Kazula Vargas vs. Rong Zhu
  • Dwight Grant vs. Stefan Sekulic
  • Ariane Carnelossi vs. Na Liang
  • Tristan Connelly vs. Pat Sabatini

UFC’s Tristan Connelly, Cole Smith on leaving United States after coronavirus postponements

Tristan Connelly and Cole Smith hung in the United States as long as they could – but as soon as postponements came, they were out.

[autotag]Tristan Connelly[/autotag] and [autotag]Cole Smith[/autotag] hung in the United States as long as they could – but as soon as the announcement came, they were out.

Two of the UFC’s resident Western Canadians, Connelly (14-6 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Smith (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) were training at the UFC Performance Institute in preparation for their upcoming fights.

Connelly was supposed to fight Alex da Silva at UFC on ESPN+ 30 in Portland, Ore. on April 11. The fight was later rescheduled for the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, before it was eventually postponed. As for Smith, he didn’t have a fight booked, but threw his hat in contention for any short-notice opportunities available.

As their camp progressed, concern surrounding the coronavirus grew. The NBA, NHL, Bellator and numerous other sports organizations cancelled or postponed events. However, the UFC initially refused to do so. Smith said they had no intention of leaving, as long as the UFC held out.

“It was a risk we were willing to take,” Smith told MMA Junkie. “As irresponsible as that sounds, it was what we were willing to do. Obviously, a lot of the gyms started getting closed down out there. We were getting some of the fighters together and having our own secret training. Other than that, it’s part of the game.”

Connelly added, “I was definitely concerned with everything that was going on, but we’re in a unique sport where there’s not actually a whole lot of close contact besides the two fighters fighting – at least not in a large group. It seems like the perfect sport to be able to continue.”

[lawrence-related id=501627,500687,501579]

When news broke Monday of the UFC’s three event postponements, the two fighters were actually working out at the PI. They decided it was time to leave.

“I was sitting on the PI, scrolling through Twitter, and I saw it on MMA Junkie,” Smith said. “I saw it from you guys – the event was (postponed). I went up to Tristan and said, ‘Hey buddy, your fight is off, I’m sorry to say. Let’s go home tomorrow. We have no reason to be here anymore. The PI is closing. Xtreme Couture is closing. 10th Planet is closing.’ There was no need for us to be there anymore.”

Booking a flight home was not easy. Connelly and Smith were unable to book the same flight home and instead, had to fly out at different hours of the day. Upon arrival in Canada, Smith indicated he was surprised at the lack of questioning to cross the border.

“They asked me a couple questions,” Smith said. “They asked us all as a group. When we were walking off the plane, they had an agent standing there and he just asked everybody, ‘Is anyone sick?’ And everyone is like, ‘No.’ They just let us go by. It was kind of weird.”

Now back home, the two fighters are in the midst of self-quarantine. While both guys are utilizing alternative training methods, it’s proven to be especially difficult for Connelly, given he was in the middle of as fight camp. Unsure of when or where his event will be postponed, Connelly has faith in the UFC.

“The toughest thing is coming back into the country I have to self-quarantine for 14 days,” Connelly said. “All the gyms are closed, too. Not being able to train is the hardest part. The next couple weeks I’ll have to stay by myself. It’ll be hard not to eat sitting on the couch. I can stretch, but I don’t have much room to do stuff in here. That’s going to be the hardest bit. I’ll stay in shape and be ready. Hopefully, the UFC figures something out. I really feel like they will figure out small events.”
