Ohio State basketball transfer target commits elsewhere

A loss, but keep moving forward. #GoBucks

The Ohio State basketball team has been very busy this offseason. It hired/promoted its new head coach, had some guys depart via the transfer portal, hired some new assistants, and gained some guys via that same transfer portal.

But the Buckeyes were looking for more, and probably still will be. However, one of its main targets in the portal decided to commit elsewhere on Wednesday.

Former Oakland guard Trey Townsend was down to Arizona and Ohio State in his final two, but decided to commit to the Wildcats rather than back the U-Haul up to the banks of the Olentangy.

Townsend averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists last season. Who knows what kind of transition he can make at a higher level of play, but he showed flashes of being a playmaker no matter what the competition.

For OSU, there’s no doubt that it’s a miss, so the coaching staff will more than likely continue to see what makes sense to continue to construct a roster it hopes can compete for the Big Ten and potentially more next season.

Potential Michigan State basketball transfer target Trey Townsend of Oakland commits to Arizona

Trey Townsend, who many fans connected to MSU, will join Arizona

In all the transfer portal craziness of this college basketball offseason, one name has been linked to Michigan State basketball the entire time, for obvious reasons: Trey Townsend.

The Oakland star who was named Horizon League Player of the Year seemed like a classic Izzo guy, and everyone knows the affection Izzo has for Oakland and Greg Kampe. However, it never felt like a great fit with the current MSU roster, as Townsend plays power forward, like MSU star Xavier Booker.

While fans were desperate to see Townsend come to East Lansing, he committed to Arizona on Wednesday, closing that possibility for the Spartans.

Ohio State basketball finalists for top transfer target

Could Diebler land another addition via the transfer portal? #GoBucks

Jake Diebler has had a busy first offseason as the new head coach of Ohio State basketball. trey-townsendThe Buckeyes have already landed three players in the transfer portal and are currently looking to add one of the top players available.

The first of the transfer portal additions was Meechie Johnson, who played two seasons for the Buckeyes in 2021 and 2022 before transferring to South Carolina where he averaged 14.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists last year.

The Buckeyes also added former Kentucky center, Aaron Bradshaw, who entered the transfer portal after John Calipari’s departure. The 7-foot-1, 226 pound center has a lot of upside as he was a five-star recruit in the 2023 high school class.

Last weekend Ohio State made a third addition via the transfer portal by landing a commitment from former San Diego State forward, Micah Parrish, who averaged 9.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists last season for the Aztecs.

This week’s focus shifts to the pursuit of one of the top players available in the transfer portal, Trey Townsend. The 6-foot-6, 212 pound forward was the player of the year in the Horizon conference and helped lead Oakland to an opening round upset over Kentucky.

The Buckeyes are amongst two finalists to land Townsend as Matt Norlander reported on Tuesday that Townsend will announce his commitment this week choosing between Ohio State and Arizona.

Townsend would be a massive addition for the Buckeyes next season as a dominant post scorer and passer, averaging 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists last campaign.

UCLA hoops reached out to Oakland transfer Trey Townsend

UCLA has shown interest in Trey Townsend.

The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team has also now reached out to Oakland transfer Trey Townsend, adding to the long list of players they have been trying to lure to the program.

Townsend has heard from a number of schools thus far in the portal, per a report from Tony Paul of The Detroit News. Here are the schools:

  • UCLA
  • Michigan State
  • Michigan
  • Tennessee
  • Louisville
  • Arizona and more

Townsend has a visit lined up with Michigan State, and the Bruins landing Eric Dailey Jr., Kobe Johnson, and Skyy Clark could make it more difficult for Townsend to join.

Townsend led Oakland in points, steals, rebounds, and assists and is looking for an uptick in the portal.

It has been a busy portal season for Mick Cronin so far, but there is no stopping as the Bruins try and make things interesting in their transition to the Big Ten Conference in 2024-2025.
