WATCH: Trey Palmer comes down with a goal line fade for a TD

The Bucs capitalized on a Saints turnover with a touchdown pass to the rookie wideout from Nebraska.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t stop at seven in the first half against their division rivals.

It looked like Tampa Bay would suffer against the New Orleans Saints when quarterback [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] threw an interception near the goal line, but the Bucs defense immediately got a turnover off a fumble from New Orleans. This time, Mayfield managed to cash in — he hit rookie wideout [autotag]Trey Palmer[/autotag] on a goal line fade, and Palmer brilliantly lept up and got the ball over the defensive back in tight coverage. Tampa Bay hit the extra point, and it went into halftime up 14-3 on its NFC South rivals.

The 33-yard grab was the receiver’s lone reception in the game. Our colleagues at Bucs Wire believe Palmer could become a featured player in the Buccaneers’ offense.

Early indications are that the Bucs found a diamond in the rough with sixth-round pick Trey Palmer. The former Nebraska receiver has been sensational so far, scoring a touchdown in last week’s preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and torching Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner for a 60-yard completion during joint practices this week.

In his preseason debut last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Palmer made four catches for 33 yards and one touchdown. His score came on an 8-yard pass from Baker Mayfield with 12:20 remaining in the second quarter.

Palmer made his highlight catch in a joint practice with the New York Jets on Wednesday. He was able to beat NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and First-team All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner for the 60+ yard catch.

Tampa WR Russell Gage injury opens the door for rookie Trey Palmer

Trey Palmer has been impressive since joining the Bucs and should be able to replace Russell Gage.

On Wednesday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice. This is unfortunate for Gage as he was having a very strong camp and looked to be ready for a strong season. But Gage’s injury opens the door for Bucs rookie wide receiver Trey Palmer.

Tampa picked Palmer in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft and trust us when we say they got a steal. The knock on Palmer coming out of Nebraska was drops but the Bucs have seen none of that since he joined the team.

Palmer looked especially strong on Wednesday in a joint practice with the New York Jets. Palmer had maybe his best day of training camp and showed no fear going against Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner. One thing that has truly stood out with Palmer in the NFL has been his ability to get up to top speed in just a few steps and get past cornerbacks with ease.

The Bucs have Mike Evans and Chris Godwin on the outside but Palmer could move inside to the slot where Russell was lined up to play.

Bucs sign five 2023 draft picks

The Bucs’ first three draft picks remain unsigned.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced the signing of five of their 2023 draft picks, including fifth-round picks LB SirVocea Dennis and TE Payne Durham and sixth-round picks CB Josh Hayes, WR Trey Palmer and EDGE Jose Ramirez. This leaves their first three picks of the 2023 draft, DT Calijah Kancey, OG Cody Mauch and EDGE YaYa Diaby, still unsigned.

The newly signed rookies are unlikely to impact the Bucs’ cap space in a meaningful way. Cap calculations are cut off after the top 51 salaries, and with rookies making as little as $750,000, they may not make that cutoff prior to preseason roster cuts.

With the majority of their 2023 draft picks coming in rounds five and six, the Bucs have locked up their depth and developmental prospects from this class. While the key draft picks are still unsigned, the Bucs are closer to season readiness.

The total rundown on new Bucs WR Trey Palmer

Here are some quick hits on Tampa Bay’s new speedy WR.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are already fairly stacked at the WR position, but the team drafted another speedy wideout in the sixth round in 2023 that could serve to be a valuable return man and could move up the depth chart in time.

Here’s what you need to know about former Nebraska WR [autotag]Trey Palmer[/autotag]:

Height: 6’1″

Weight: 192

Age: 22

Hometown: Kentwood, Louisiana

Scouting Report (Dane Brugler, the Athletic): “A one-year starter at Nebraska, Palmer was primarily a slot receiver in former offensive coordinator Mark Whipple’s shotgun, pro-style scheme, also seeing time on the outside. After three years at LSU, he had a record-breaking senior season at Nebraska and set school records for receiving yards in both a season and game (accounted for 40 more catches and 572 yards more than the second-leading receiver on the Huskers in 2022). One of the fastest players in the draft class, Palmer has Ted Ginn-like vertical burst (led the FBS with three catches of 70-plus yards in 2022) and catches defenders napping with the acceleration out of his breaks. Though a confident competitor, his concentration can be disrupted by physical defenders in press or on his hip. Overall, Palmer needs more route polish and consistency through contact to be useful on a down-to-down basis, but he is an inside/outside field stretcher with speed that defenses must respect. He projects as an NFL rookie return man and WR 4/5 who can move up the depth chart over time.”
