WATCH: Cardinals rookie TE Trey McBride stumbles to 1st career TD

His four-yard touchdown catch gave the Cardinals a 10-7 lead on Sunday.

Arizona Cardinals rookie tight end Trey McBride scored his first NFL touchdown Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17. It wasn’t pretty, though.

In  the second quarter after the Falcons lost the ball on a fumbled snap and the Cardinals recovered inside the 10-yard line and running back James Conner had a four-yard run, McBride scored on a four-yard touchdown pass from David Blough.

Blough ran a boot to his right, McBride faked a block and found space in the flat. Blough threw him the ball, McBride made the catch and stumbled and fell to the ground but slid forward into the end zone without being touched.

Here is the play:

It was his third catch of the game and gave the Cardinals a 10-7 lead.

It should be the first of many touchdowns for the second-round pick.

Cardinals believe rookie TE Trey McBride’s flashes in practice will show up in games soon

Kliff Kingsbury says McBride shows some special things in practice. He believes they might start showing up in games as the season progresses.

Tight end Trey McBride, the Arizona Cardinals’ second-round draft pick this year, has not had a great rookie season. However, that doesn’t mean the Cardinals don’t see good things coming from him.

He was one of our duds in the Cardinals’ 25-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He had a key drop and, over the course of the season, has missed passes, missed blocks and drawn penalties.

They are basic rookie mistakes for a kid that came from a relatively small football program in Colorado State.

“He’s just growing into it right now,” coach Kliff Kingsbury said Monday. “We see some real flashes at practice where you know he’s going to be a very good player in this league.”

As for the games, it is different.

“Sometimes in the games, it seems a little sped up for him, but that`s all rookies,” Kingsbury added. “The more reps he gets with Zach (Ertz) being out, I think it’s going to continue to help him, and you’ll start to see some of those flashes as the season winds down.”

So far this season, McBride has nine receptions for 46 yards.

Zach Ertz, Byron Murphy active for Cardinals; J.J. Watt, Trey McBride out

Check out the Cardinals’ first inactives of the season. There are a couple of surprises.

The Arizona Cardinals released their first inactive list of the year and there is a couple of surprises. Rookie tight end Trey McBride, the Cardinals’ top draft pick this year, will not suit up.

There is good news. Tight end Zach Ertz and cornerback Byron Murphy, both listed as questionable for the game on the final injury report of the week, are both active and will start.

Defensive end J.J. Watt (calf) and starting left guard Justin Pugh (neck), though, will not play. They are both inactive for the team’s Week 1 home game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team’s full list of inactive players:

  • WR Rondale Moore
  • CB Trayvon Mullen
  • RB Keaontay Ingram
  • OLB Myjai Sanders
  • OL Justin Pugh
  • TE Trey McBride
  • DE J.J. Watt

Moore (hamstring), Mullen (toe), Pugh (neck) and Watt (calf) were all on the injury report.

The other three are rookies. It is no surprise to see Ingram inactive, as he is the team’s fifth running back. Sanders and McBride are a surprise.

With no McBride, the Cardinals will go with Ertz, Maxx Williams and Stephen Anderson as their tight ends for the game.

Sanders sits in favor of Markus Golden, Devon Kennard, Dennis Gardeck, Cameron Thomas and Victor Dimukeje at outside linebacker.

With Pugh out, Sean Harlow likely will start at left guard, although the team did just sign Max Garcia from the Giants’ practice squad on Saturday.

Rookie TE Trey McBride to get first action in preseason

McBride will play Sunday against the Ravens after missing the preseason opener with back spasms.

The Arizona Cardinals have high hopes for tight end Trey McBride, their second-round selection in the 2022 NFL draft. They wanted him to get a lot of work in the preseason so he is prepared to be able to contribute in the regular season.

He will finally get his first preseason action this weekend when the Cardinals host the Baltimore Ravens Sunday night.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury made it clear with reporters Thursday that McBride is playing Sunday.

McBride missed the preseason opener last week against the Cincinnati Bengals as he has been dealing with back spasms. He has gotten back on the practice field this week and will get some work in the game.

Rookie TE Trey McBride not expected to play in preseason opener

The second-round pick has been dealing with a back injury. Kliff Kingsbury hopes McBride can be ready for their game against the Ravens.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury wants to give rookie tight end Trey McBride playing time in the preseason so he can be prepared for a role in the offense once the regular season begins. That isn’t likely going to happen this weekend when the team takes on the Cincinnati Bengals on the road Friday in their preseason opener.

Kingsbury told reporters Wednesday it is unlikely McBride will be able to play in the opener. He has been dealing with back tightness which has kept him out of practice over the last week or so.

“After today, we just rested him,” Kingsbury said. “I doubt it will be Friday night. Hoping for Baltimore at this point.”

The Cardinals play their second preseason game at home against the Ravens next Sunday night.

McBride, drafted in the second round this year, needs the game reps so Kingsbury can trust him to be used in the regular season.

Cardinals TE Trey McBride named Mountain West Male Athlete of the Year

The third-round rookie adds to his college accolades.

The Arizona Cardinals were excited to select tight end Trey McBride with the 55th pick in the 2022 draft, the first of their two third-round selections.

He was considered the top tight end in the nation last year and won the John Mackay Award, recognizing him as such. He was Colorado State’s first-ever unanimous All-American.

He adds another honor, as he was named the Moutain West’s 2021-2022 Male Athlete of the Year, the university announced Wednesday.

McBride led the nation’s tight ends in receptions (90), yards (1,121), and yards per game (93.4). He became CSU’s all-time and single-season leader in receptions and yards among tight ends, and the yardage total was the fifth-most in a single season by an FBS tight end and the most in Mountain West history.

He is only the third CSU athlete to win the conference athlete of the year award.

The Cardinals knew they were getting a talented player. They believe they are getting a great person in the locker room.

There is a lot to be excited about with McBride.

The team announced that second-round pick Trey McBride and seventh-round picks Christian Matthew and Marquis  Hayes signed their four-year rookie contracts.

That leaves only their two third-round selections, linebackers Cameron Thomas and Myjai Sanders, as their only unsigned draft picks

These are the player bios the Cardinals gave in their press release for the signings.

McBride (6-4, 246) was the John Mackey Award winner in 2021 as the nation’s top tight end after starting all 12 games and finishing with 90 receptions for 1,121 yards, the fifth-most yards by a tight end in FBS history. He was also a unanimous first-team All-American selection last year, becoming the first player in Colorado State history to earn that honor. McBride appeared in 40 games (32 starts) in his college career and had 164 receptions for 2,100 yards and 10 touchdowns. He established school career and single-season records for receptions, receiving yards and 100-yard performances (8) by a tight end.
