BREAKING: Four-star running back commits to LSU

The Tigers added a Louisiana prospect in Trey Holly to put their 2023 recruiting class at five total commits.

Four-star running back [autotag]Trey Holly[/autotag] from Farmerville, Louisiana, and Union Parish High School became the fifth commitment in LSU’s 2023 recruiting class on Friday. He announced his pledge to the Tigers via his Twitter account.

Holly made a visit to LSU during the spring game and reportedly fell in love with Baton Rouge. He was named the Louisiana Class 3A Offensive Player of the Year in both 2020 and 2021. In 2021, he tallied 2,815 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns on 320 carries.

Holly also claimed Most Outstanding Player honors in the Class 3A State Championship Game after totaling 265 yards and two scores. Coach Brian Kelly’s plan to “Recruit the Boot” is going very well so far, and he is just getting started.

Holly is five-foot-seven, 177-pounds, and is ranked as a top ten running back for the class of 2023 by multiple recruiting sites. Hopefully, he can be the next great running back to stay in the bayou and be successful.

With his commitment, LSU’s recruiting class currently ranks 14th nationally, per the 247Sports Composite.

In-state 2023 4-star running back crystal-balled to LSU

The Tigers could be close to picking up their second commitment in 2023, per 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong.

The Tigers only have one player currently committed in the 2023 recruiting class, but that could be about to change. On Monday, 247Sports director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong put in a crystal ball projection for the team to land four-star in-state running back Trey Holly.

Holly is a 5-foot-8-inch, 180-pound running back from Farmerville, Louisiana, where he plays for the Union Parish Farmers, who finished last season 11-4 with a loss to Sterlington in the Class 3A state championship game.

I’ve previously written about how Brian Kelly seems to have made it a priority to go after the best in-state talent he can find. He addressed that in the transfer portal, signing a handful of players that were originally from the boot. He also signed two of the top high school players in the state in Harold Perkins and Walker Howard.

Brian Kelly is well on his way to winning the hearts of many fans and alumni by keeping the best athletes close to home.

The list of LSU offers held by high school running backs in the 2023 cycle

A total of seven running backs in the 2023 class hold offers from LSU

At this point in the process, the LSU Tigers are still without a running back in the 2022 cycle. It is entirely possible that they don’t add one as their lone target let, TreVonte Citizen, is looking at Auburn and Florida. The Gators were able to snag Trevor Etienne, who the Tigers were trying to land.

The team did add Noah Cain from Penn State in the transfer portal to replace the loss of Ty Davis-Price to the NFL draft. The team will also have John Emery Jr back in 2022, he sat out 2021 due to an eligibility issue.

Should Brian Kelly and Frank Wilson strikeout in the 2022 class, they will need to shift focus to the 2023 class that has plenty of talented players. The class is led by No. 1 running back Richard Young of Lehigh Acres, Florida. It might be too late to make a push for Young but he isn’t the only quality runner in the class.

Trey Holly of Union Parish and Kaleb Jackson of Liberty Magnet are the top two in-state talent at running back who hold LSU offers. Holly is trending towards LSU, but the Tigers could easily take more than one back in next year’s class.

The list of running backs who already hold an LSU offer for next year:

Tennessee offers 2023 running back Trey Holly

Tennessee offers 2023 running back prospect Trey Holly.

Second-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and his staff continue to recruit future Vols.

The Vols have offered 2023 running back prospect Trey Holly.

“I’m beyond blessed to announce that I have received an offer from the University of Tennessee,” Holly said on Twitter.

The 5-foot-8, 180-pound Holly is from Union Parish High School in Farmerville, Louisiana.

Holly has Southeastern Conference offers from the Vols, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Texas A&M.

2023 RB Trey Holly picks up re-offer from LSU

Louisiana back picks up re-offer from the LSU staff.

One of the top in-state running backs for the 2023 cycle picked up a re-offer from the LSU Tigers. Trey Holly of Farmersville was originally offered in January of 2021 but a year later he picked up an offer from the new staff.

Holly tallied 2,633 yards and 33 touchdowns according to his MaxPreps profile.

With the chance that the Tigers might not land a running back in the 2022 class, the team will have pressure to land one or two in 2023. Holly would be one of the two that should be targeted in the 2023. Holly is the No. 2 running back in the state behind Baton Rouge’s Kaleb Jackson.

Both backs should be high priority targets in the ’23 cycle.
