Dolphins place Nik Needham, Trey Flowers on injured reserve

Flowers will miss at least four weeks.

The Miami Dolphins are still dealing with injury issues that have plagued them through the first third of the season.

On Wednesday, the team announced that they’ve placed cornerback Nik Needham and Trey Flowers on injured reserve. Both will have to miss at least four weeks, but we already know that Needham will miss the remainder of the year with a torn Achilles.

Flowers’ injury, which was listed as a foot when he left Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, could see him return by Week 12 for a matchup with the Houston Texans.

Miami needed to clear a spot on their active roster with offensive tackle Austin Jackson expecting to return in the coming weeks. Now, they’ll have an extra just in case.

Trey Flowers leaves game vs. Vikings with foot injury

His return is questionable.

The Miami Dolphins have been dealing with injuries early and often this season, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

During the first half of their game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Dolphins edge rusher Trey Flowers left the game with a foot injury. The team announced that his return is questionable.

Flowers had a great hit on Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins that forced an incompletion leading to a punt.

Luckily, Miami is pretty deep at the edge spots, so they should have adequate players to take Flowers’ spot if he can’t go for the remainder of the game.

Former Hog Trey Flowers has finally found a new home

Trey Flowers appears to be headed to South Beach after two seasons with the Lions.

Trey Flowers is far too good of an NFL pass rusher to stay unemployed long.

Now it looks like his new home has been determined.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Flowers, a former Arkansas defensive end, intends to sign with the Miami Dolphins this week. He had spent the last two seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Flowers won two Super Bowls in his first four seasons with New England. His last two seasons with the Patriots, he was a starter up front, registering 6 1/2 and then seven sacks. He hit the market after his fourth season and the Lions signed him to a $90 million deal. Injuries stalled his two years in Detroit as he played in only 14 games in two seasons, collecting a total of 3 1/2 sacks.

The move to Miami is not officially but is expected to be when roster spots become available later in the week.

Flowers played all four college seasons at Arkansas from 2011-2014. He had 18 sacks and 47 1/2 tackles for-loss during his career.

Dolphins agree to terms with DE Trey Flowers

Miami adds another veteran.

The Miami Dolphins have been dealing with some injuries at edge rusher in recent weeks, as Andrew Van Ginkel and Brennan Scarlett have both missed time.

According to ESPN’S Adam Schefter, the Dolphins are addressing this need by agreeing to terms with defensive end/outside linebacker Trey Flowers.

Flowers has spent time with the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots during his career. He was cut this offseason after signing a $90 million contract in 2019.

Unfortunately, Flowers has dealt with injuries over the past couple of seasons, playing in just seven games in 2020 and 2021.

While he can bring some depth to the group, he also provides more veteran leadership that the Dolphins will be glad to have.

Dolphins working out former Lions, Patriots DE Trey Flowers

Could Miami add another pass rusher?

While the Miami Dolphins are holding joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles, they’re still working to add more talent to their roster.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapaport, the Dolphins are working out defensive end/outside linebacker Trey Flowers.

Flowers was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2015 draft by the New England Patriots. During his four seasons with New England, he was part of two Super Bowl victories.

After his rookie contract ended, he signed a monster five-year, $90 million deal with the Detroit Lions in 2019, reuniting with his former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Unfortunately, Flowers played just 29 games during his three seasons in Detroit, missing more than half of the last two years due to injuries.

When he’s healthy, the 29-year-old Flowers has been decent setting the edge and getting after opposing quarterbacks.

It’s unclear what his role would be in Miami, but he would bring more veteran experience to a defense that’s full of it.

The 10 best NFL free agents still available this preseason, from Odell Beckham Jr. to J.C. Tretter

There are a bunch of solid veterans left for some lucky teams to scoop up.

This time of year, with training camps around the NFL in full swing, most rosters are more or less set in stone.

Sure, there might be the occasional camp controversy, positional battle to sort through, or warranted holdout (or “hold-in”). But, for the most part, teams know what kind of shape they’ll enter the 2022 season in.

Now, that said, no one has a perfect roster. In fact, many squads might still have a glaring hole or two that they can fill with a capable veteran. (Ask the Buccaneers and Julio Jones.) The initial wave and frenzy of this year’s NFL free agency is worlds, er, months away now. But plenty of good and capable players remain on the market, especially if any squad wants to fill in the gaps and start this fall on a better foot.

Here are the 10 best free agents still available as the NFL moves toward the 2022 preseason:

Breaking down the Lions dead salary cap room for 2022

A year after spending over $67 million on over 50 players no longer in Detroit — both of which led the NFL in 2021 — the Lions are in much better financial shape entering training camp of 2022.

One sure sign of progress for the Detroit Lions as they enter the second season of the radical franchise rebuild is the dead salary cap the team is carrying into 2022.

A year after spending over $67 million on over 30 players no longer in Detroit — both of which led the NFL in 2021 — the Lions are in much better financial shape entering training camp of 2022.

The Lions currently have just four players who are no longer on the roster who remain on the salary cap ledger for the coming season. The dead cap figure of just over $20.3 million ranks 15th in the league, another significant improvement in the second season of GM Brad Holmes running the show.

As a reference, the Atlanta Falcons are on the hook for the most dead money in 2022 at $63.2 million. The New York Jets have the lowest dead cap figure at $2.1 million.

ESPN deems this defensive free agent as best fit for Patriots

ESPN believes this linebacker should make his return to New England.

The New England Patriots have had a busy offseason, as they have seen players come and go at a rapid rate. As the focus begins to shift towards training camp, there are still impactful free agents on the market.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen released a list of the top 10 available free agents on Thursday. In addition, he also picked the best fit for each player. Bowen went the defensive route for the Patriots, as he believes Trey Flowers should make his return to Foxborough.

Flowers was drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. He recorded 21 sacks and 164 combined tackles in four seasons with New England. He won two Super Bowls with the Patriots, before signing a five-year deal with the Detroit Lions in March 2019.

The Lions released Flowers on March 16 after they placed him on injured reserve at the end of the season. He recorded 24 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks in seven games with the Lions last season.

As Bowen notes, a reunion between Flowers and the Patriots would make sense for both parties.

“Flowers only played 14 games over the past two seasons, and the production never really hit in Detroit,” Bowen wrote. “Flowers produced just 10 1/2 sacks in his three years with the Lions. An edge rusher who lacks transcendent traits, Flowers benefits from heavily schemed fronts — which he will see back in New England.

“Over his first three seasons in the NFL, the defensive end logged a total of 20.5 sacks with the Patriots. He wins with slants and stunts, along with the defined one-on-one pass-rush matchups. Flowers played his best and most disruptive football under Bill Belichick, so a return to New England makes sense.”

The Patriots could use Flowers’ skillset, as the organization could use additional linebacker depth. Flowers’ ability to rush the passer could also be an asset, as New England looks to keep up in a crowded, offensively-explosive AFC East.

10 best remaining free agents the Eagles should target after NFL draft

10 best remaining free agents the Philadelphia Eagles should target after the NFL draft

The NFL draft is a wrap and as the Eagles work towards building for the 2022 regular season opener, there are still holes to be filled on the roster.

Defense headlines the list, with several guys making the group that would allow Jonathan Gannon to display even more versatility with his defensive packages.

The only position lacking an immediate starter is the cornerback spot opposite Darius Slay, and as Philadelphia waits for high-value free agents to sign for less, we’ve identified 10 players that shouldn’t break the bank, nor disrupt the growing culture being built by Nick Sirianni.

Texans should consider DE Trey Flowers to shore up the edge defense

The Houston Texans should take a look at defensive end Trey Flowers if they want to put the finishing touches on their edge defense.

The Houston Texans have completed the first wave of free agency and the 2022 NFL draft. Ostensibly the club has filled their roster holes and are ready to get to work.

The Texans still lack a solid veteran presence along the edge, but they could find one easily in defensive end Trey Flowers.

According to Gregg Rosenthal from NFL.com, Flowers ranks as the 43rd-best free agent when the new league year kicked off, and the ninth-best available.

Flowers was unable to stay healthy the last two seasons, but he’ll only be 29 years old this fall and had a PFF grade over 80 in every season between 2017-2020, making him one of the most consistent defensive linemen in football. He should still have good football left in him in the right scheme.

Flowers has familiarity with general manager Nick Caserio as he played for the New England Patriots from 2015-18, winning two Super Bowls in the process. Flowers spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions as he followed former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to the Motor City when he took the job in 2018. Flowers stayed on one more year through the beginning of the Dan Campbell era.

The former Arkansas Razorback generated 24 combined tackles, a tackle for loss, three quarterback hits, 1.5 sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery through seven games, all of which he started.

Flowers is 29 years old and still has some good snaps remaining.

The Texans’ defensive ends consist of Jonathan Greenard, Jordan Jenkins, Michael Dwumfour, Derek Rivers, and Demone Harris.

The offseason workouts will reveal where the Texans are at in terms of their defensive end situation, even if the pads aren’t on yet and the trenches aren’t yet colliding with one another. Nevertheless if coach Lovie Smith believes the edge defense could use a boost, they need to consider Flowers.
