Gators expected to lose Trey Bonham to NCAA transfer portal

Florida continues to lose players to the transfer portal after Year 1 of the Todd Golden era. Guard Trey Bonham is expected to be the latest Gators to leave the team this offseason.

Florida has already lost a good chunk of its 2022-23 men’s basketball to the NCAA transfer portal, and junior guard [autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag] is the latest name expected to step away from the program, according to a report from All Gators.

Bonham appeared in 30 games for the Gators during his one year in Gainesville, starting 13 of those contests and reaching 20 points three times. The Virginia Military Institute transfer averaged 5.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Although he did make a string of starts early in the season, Bonham’s production dropped significantly after the calendar turned over. Offensively, he was an energetic leader off the bench, but Bonham’s defense left a lot to be desired.

[autotag]Myreon Jones[/autotag] was the better option at the other guard spot to complement [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag], and there’s no guarantee Bonham takes over either’s role during his senior year. It’s not too surprising to see Bonham leave. Plenty of players gave Todd Golden a chance but there are always going to be those who don’t end up fitting.

Bonham is unique in that he’s the only Golden-era transfer to depart the team after just one year. [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag], [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag], [autotag]Niels Lane[/autotag] and [autotag]Kowacie Reeves Jr[/autotag]. were all added to the team during the Mike White days.

The other 2022 transfers are either still with the team or out of college eligibility. [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] should be foundational pieces of the lineup next season for the Gators, and Lofton is done with college hoops after five years.

PHOTOS: Highlights from Florida basketball’s loss vs Texas A&M Aggies

Take a look at some highlights from Wednesday night’s action.

Florida basketball failed to capitalize on its late rally against the Texas A&M Aggies in the O’Connell Center on Wednesday night, dropping their second-straight Southeastern Conference matchup after a furious rally against the Auburn Tigers also failed in the SEC opener. After all was said and done, the Gators came away with a 66-63 loss at the hands of the visitors sending them to the .500 mark on the season with a 7-7 mark overall.

[autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag]’s 21 points and four dimes paced the Orange and Blue while [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag]’s 14 was the only other double-digit total for a Gator. Catleston, [autotag]Kowacie reeves[/autotag], [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] all notched a team-high five boards — though the latter fouled out with five minutes remaining in the game.

Take a look below at highlights from Florida basketball’s second SEC loss of the season, this time coming at the hands of the visiting Texas A&M Aggies.

PHOTOS: Highlights from Florida basketball’s win vs Ohio Bobcats

Take a look at some of the best photos from Wednesday night’s romp over the Bobcats.

Florida basketball bounced back from an ugly loss the previous week with an authoritative win over the Ohio Bobcats inside Amalie Arena on Wednesday night. The Gators had control from the get-go and never took their foot off the pedal en route to an 82-48 neutral-court victory in Tampa.

[autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag] led the attack dropping 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting overall and 4-for-7 from behind the arc. Three other Gators scored in double digits as [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag], [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] and [autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag] joined the scoring parade with 15, 13 and 12, respectively.

Take a look below at highlights from the Gators’ route of the Ohio Bobcats in Tampa on Wednesday night.

Florida puts together second-straight blowout win, takes down Stetson by 38

Back-to-back big wins and Alex Klatsky appearances have spirits up in Gainesville, but a major test against UConn looms on the schedule.

Florida basketball has been rolling over its past two games and the Gators certainly look prepared for UConn after taking down the Stetson Hatters, 89-51.

It’s the second-straight game that Florida has won by just about 40 points and a major confidence boost for a team that struggled on the road at the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament over Thanksgiving. Ironically, Florida has played some of its best basketball of the season without its starting point guard, [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag]. [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] did rejoin the team in this one, but Lofton remains on the bench as he deals with an injury.

In place of Lofton, [autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag] and [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag] have stepped up big time. Reeves put together another solid performance on Sunday, but Bonham was a bit off from the field. No matter, though. Florida’s offense was firing on all cylinders against a weaker opponent and ran away with things in the second half.

UF’s defense also looks a bit better, but that could be a product of the opposition’s skill level rather than an improvement from the team. It’s hard to gauge whether Florida is playing well enough to take down UConn on Wednesday, but it’s hard to argue against back-to-back blowout wins.

PHOTOS: Highlights from Florida basketball’s win vs FAMU

Here are highlights from Wednesday night’s big win for the Gators’ men’s basketball team.

Florida basketball bounced back from a rough trip out west in the Phil Knight Legacy tournament — having gone 1-2 including a blowout loss at the hands of the West Virginia Mountaineers in the final game – with a blowout win of its own over the visiting Florida A&M Rattlers in the O’Connell Center on Wednesday night.

[autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag] led the way with 23 points as one of six Gators to score in double digits en route to the 102-62 victory. [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] added 10 rebounds to 16 points to mark the only double-double notched during the game.

Take a look below at highlights from Florida’s fifth win of the 2022-23 season, coming against its in-state opponent, the FAMU Rattlers.

Kowacie Reeves returns to Florida lineup, Gators cruise past FAMU

You know it’s a good game when Alex Klatsky and Jack May get to play. Florida routed Florida A&M, 102-62, Wednesday night.

Florida needed to make a statement after falling to West Virginia by 29 points in the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament, and the Gators answered with a 40-point rout of the Florida A&M Rattlers that ended 102-62.

The Gators came out of the gate hot and never really looked back against a lesser opponent. The big story coming into the game was how many minutes [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag] would get after playing minimal time in Portland. Injuries to Florida’s starting guards, [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag] and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag], forced Reeves back in the starting lineup, and the sophomore shined… at least in the first half.

[autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag], who started at point guard, was lights out from three-point range, setting a school record on 7-of-7 shooting from deep, and he led all scorers with 23 points. [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] wasn’t the dominant big man he was earlier in the season, but [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] made up for it off the bench with a double-double.

Even [autotag]Jack May[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Klatsky[/autotag] got some playing time against FAMU, which is the hallmark of a blowout Gators win. Florida needed this one badly, but it won’t mean much in the long run.

Stetson is up next on Sunday, and then it’s time for another test as Connecticut comes to town on Wednesday.

Florida bounces back against Oregon State in Phil Knight Legacy Tournament

Black Friday went much better than Thanksgiving for the Florida men’s basketball team as the Gators rolled over the Oregon State Beavers in the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament.

The Florida Gators took down the Oregon State Beavers, 81-68, on Friday night to advance to the fifth-place game of the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament.

UF got out to a very hot start in this one and never really looked back. Florida spent just 37 seconds of this ame without the lead, and most of the time it was a double digit lead. [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] didn’t have a monster night thanks to four fouls, but he looked a lot better than he did against Xavier and proved that not every 7-footer is going to shut him down. There’s still plenty of time for him to prove that he’s one of the nation’s top big men, but his draft stock is about where it was at the end of last season despite a great start to the year.

On the other hand, guard [autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag] as lit up the scoreboard in each of his two starts during this tournament. He figures to be a major part of the starting lineup moving forward, even if it means cutting into [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag]’ playing time. Bonham led all scorers with 19 points, and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] was lights out with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

Although it was a nice bounce-back win, Florida still has to prove itself against a non-Quadrant 4 opponent to earn some respect this year. That likely won’t happen in the fifth-place game of this tournament, but conference play might present the opportunity.

Florida basketball erases 17-point halftime deficit to beat FSU in Tallahassee

Florida was down 17 points at the half, but Colin Castleton took over in the second period and led the Gators to victory, 76-67.

The Florida Gators mounted a comeback for the ages on Friday night, taking down the Florida State Seminoles by a final score of 76-67 after trailing by nearly 20 at the half.

Although it’s a cliche in sports, this truly was a tale of two halves. The Gators scored twice as many points in the second half of the game and slowed down a red-hot FSU offense until a lead was firmly established. The Seminoles could not stop turning the ball over in the second half, allowing the Gators to go on a 20-3 run through the first 6:15 of the period that erased a 17-point halftime lead.

Florida’s big man [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] contributed 10 of his 25 points during that stretch and completely took over a game he appeared to be struggling in before the half. As the clock whittled down, it became clear that there would be no slowing down the Gators’ offense and the FSU faithful began filing out of the building.

[autotag]Will Richard[/autotag]’s 13 points were good enough for the second-best number on the team, and [autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag] finally played meaningful minutes off the bench, seemingly in place of true freshman [autotag]Riley Kugel[/autotag] who struggled.

As good as it feels to leave Tallahassee with a win, there’s clearly a lot for Florida to work on if the Gators are going to be successful in the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament, which begins in just under a week on Thanksgiving Day.

Here are five takeaways from Florida’s first win in Tallahassee since 2012.

Florida men’s basketball releases jersey numbers for 2022-23 season

Time to start thinking about basketball! The 2022-23 men’s basketball team has received their jersey numbers for the upcoming season.

The Florida men’s basketball team released jersey numbers for the 2022-23 season on Thursday.

With several members of last year’s team gone and a handful of newcomers to the program, there has been some shuffling of the digits on the team. The roster currently sits at 14 players, one short of the NCAA Division I limit.

While jersey numbers aren’t the most exciting news in the world, it’s what we basketball fans have to cling on to this point in anticipation of the [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] era at Florida. So, without further ado, here’s a look at the 2022-23 roster and which numbers the players will be wearing come the winter.

Here’s a quick glance at all of the jerseys, but continue to scroll for a more in-depth look at each player’s number history.

Gators named a finalist for this transferring forward

Washington State transfer target Efe Abogidi would fit in nicely with Todd Golden’s analytical approach.

Forward [autotag]Efe Abogidi[/autotag] announced on Tuesday afternoon the Gators had made his list of finalists in the transfer portal.

After playing his first two years at Washington State, Abogidi announced his intentions to leave the basketball program in mid-April. The other finalists in his recruitment are the Arizona Wildcats and Maryland Terrapins.

In addition to the portal, Abogodi tested the NBA draft waters but decided to return to amateur competition for at least one more season.

Abogidi’s strengths are condensed in the frontcourt. He’s an athletic big man who has a knack for blocks. He can make an opposing defender pay severely under the net for undercommitting to him. Last season, he averaged 8.1 points per game with minimal shooting from the arc, supplemented by 1.8 blocks and 5.8 rebounds.

As Florida basketball expert Eric Fawcett points out in an article for Gator Country, Abogidi is a golden boy for the analytics that head coach [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] is using to identify big men. Particularly with regards to offensive rebounding – an area Golden made no bones about prioritizing improvement in – Abogidi could be a great help to Florida’s roster.

How exactly Golden would integrate another long frontcourt player with more SEC potential than proven ability isn’t clear as daylight to me. [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] also fit that bill and both have been described as having NBA potential. Odds are, however, that injury or underperformance will allow that question to answer itself.

Also notable is Abogidi has three years of eligibility remaining. That has been a theme among many of the transfers signed by Golden and his staff. Fudge still has three years left, as do guards [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] and [autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag].
