Round 1 updated mock for the 2022 NFL Draft

A recent trade has shaken up the middle of the 2022 NFL Draft’s opening round. The swapping of picks warranted an update a week sooner than planned, so I took the opportunity to fully revisit each pick from the top down in this Round 1 mock draft. While many picks did not change, a few intriguing adjustments atop the draft created a ripple effect throughout. You can check out the first iteration, if you so please.

Be sure to check our NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of the offerings. We’ll have multiple new and updated mocks throughout the month of April, along with player scouting reports and post-draft analysis of every key pick relevant to fantasy football.

2022 NFL draft: The top 11 offensive tackles

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar breaks down the 11 best offensive tackle in the 2022 NFL draft class.

If you want to know the hit rate for the top offensive tackles in any draft class, consider this. Since 2010, there have been 44 players taken in the first round who were designated as offensive tackles in their draft classes. Just eight have at least one First-Team All-Pro selection. Only 14 have been selected to at least one Pro Bowl. Three (Isaiah Wilson, Tennessee Titans, 2020/Andre Dillard, Philadelphia Eagles, 2019/Derek Sherrod, Green Bay Packers, 2011) have not been primary starters in the NFL.

For every Trent Williams, Tyron Smith, and Ronnie Stanley — the guys who immediately and consistently define their offenses with their excellence — there’s a Jake Matthews, Nate Solder, or Luke Joeckel (players who have great moments, but tread water more than anything else), and there’s certainly at least one Ereck Flowers, Ja’Wuan James, or Andrew Thomas (the players who wind up making you wonder what everybody in the room was thinking).

This is not to specifically malign the players who do not succeed at the NFL level, despite having what some shot-caller in some front office determined to be first-round talent. It’s more to say that being a great left or right tackle in the pros is really, really hard to do. Different offensive systems require different things from their tackles, but for the most part, you’d better have aggressive hands, excellent, light feet, the mentality to dominate, the agility to take on the NFL’s best speed-rushers, and the intelligence and reaction ability to deal with blitzes and stunts.

Those are the basics. From there, the hope is that you’ll continue to excel despite any physical limitations. Maybe your wingspan isn’t what the NFL wants it to be. Maybe your upper-body strength isn’t exactly an advertisement for your college weightroom. Perhaps your college coaches didn’t teach you this or that technique that would help you in the NFL, and you have to hope that your NFL coaches will see these things and make them better.

Sometimes, you’re able to transcend these things. More often, you’re not.

This year’s offensive tackles appear to be part of a class that is top-heavy and deep. But there’s no guarantee that any of them will become true dominators at the NFL level, no matter how much they may have owned the defenders they faced in college.

Here are the top 11 offensive tackles in the 2022 NFL draft, the attributes that best indicate their transitions to the NFL, and the things that might get in the way.

What mock drafts have the Saints doing with their new first round picks

What do mock drafts have the Saints doing with their new first round picks? The latest takes see New Orleans trading up for a quarterback or staying put to stack talent:

The New Orleans Saints shook up the 2022 NFL draft outlook in a big trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, and it didn’t take long for mock drafts from across the league’s media landscape to reflect the changes.

Previously, when the Saints were picking at No. 18 overall, they were hoping to see one of this year’s talented receivers or blockers fall to them. But now they own two picks at Nos. 16 and 19, and they’re in a great position to take their pick of the best available prospects — or trade up again in pursuit of a quarterback.

Let’s see what various draft experts are predicting for the black and gold:

2022 NFL draft: The consensus big board top-10 OT prospects

Not counting quarterback, offensive tackle is the Seahawks’ greatest need heading into the 2022 NFL draft.

Not counting quarterback, offensive tackle is the Seahawks’ greatest need heading into the 2022 NFL draft. With Duane Brown and Brandon Shell both free agents, they may need to add a couple players at this position.

Here are the top 10 prospects in this draft class according to the consensus big board.

7 offensive tackles who can help Cowboys as position in flux for first time in

The Cowboys may need to go into the draft with a mission of finding a future starting offensive tackle. @TimLettiero reviews the possibilities.

If the Dallas Cowboys want to keep their $40 million quarterback Dak Prescott upright, preventing edge pressure is essential. All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith is an elite talent, but hasn’t played a full season since 2015 and is not getting any younger. On the right side, usual starter La’el Collins dealt with injury, inconsistent play and a maddening suspension over avoiding drug testing which ultimately saw his stint in Dallas run its course

Terence Steele showed solid development after being a liability in 2020, proving he is worth a look as a starting caliber tackle in 2022. With only young and unproven OTs Josh Ball and Aviante Collins remaining on roster, this should be the year Dallas finally decides to address the tackle position with a long-term vision in mind. Here are several players from the 2022 NFL draft who provide value at various points of the weekend.

Saints get their Terron Armstead replacement in latest ESPN mock draft

The New Orleans Saints got their Terron Armstead replacement in the latest ESPN mock draft from former GM Mike Tannenbaum, via @DillySanders:

Former NFL general manager and current ESPN contributor Mike Tannenbaum shared his input on all 32 teams in his first round 2022 mock draft. With the re-signing of Jameis Winston, NFL writers have stopped taking quarterbacks as often and there are now a larger variety of selections for the New Orleans Saints. As for Tannenbaum, he had the Saints addressing the loss of Terron Armstead and lists tackle Trevor Penning out of Northern Iowa as their ideal fit, writing:

“Penning is a perfect fit to replace Terron Armstead, who signed with Miami. He’s tough and physical at the line of scrimmage, and he’d keep the offensive line as one of the Saints’ strengths. Penning turned in a fantastic combine workout, which included the fifth-fastest 10-yard split in the 40-yard dash among linemen (1.65), despite weighing in at 325 pounds.”

I have seen Penning in person at the Senior Bowl, and can attest that he carries himself the way you would want a franchise tackle to carry himself. He is a bully on the field, never out there to make friends. His effort levels were high all week and was really, really impressive to me. He passed the visual test of a star NFL lineman, for sure.

Even after Senior Bowl week, he has continued to have a great pre-draft process. Penning posted an elite 9.96 Relative Athletic Score from his combine performance, which would be a top-10 all time score at the position. His athleticism translates to his on-field performance.

His small school status shouldn’t scare you, as Spencer Brown came into the NFL from Northern Iowa last season and had solid performances as a rookie. UNI is starting to consistently put out linemen who are not just crazy athletic, but prospects that are ready for the league. Penning would be able to come in and play from Day 1, which is important for this draft.

Some people may want to attack wide receiver early on, which is understandable, but the receiver class is much deeper than the tackle class in my opinion. If the Saints feel like they can’t go into the season with James Hurst as a starter, I feel like it would be smart for them to address it as early as possible in the draft. That could mean selecting a player like Penning if they have the opportunity.

Texans upgrade defense, rushing attack in latest Draft Wire three-round mock

The Houston Texans upgrade their defense and also bolster their run game with their first five picks in the latest Draft Wire three-round mock.

The Houston Texans have five picks in the top-100 of the 2022 NFL draft, which should help them find an identity and build for the future.

According to Luke Easterling from the Draft Wire, who released his latest three-round mock, the Texans’ emphasis in the first three rounds is to fix their defense and also bolster their run game.

At No. 3 overall, Houston takes Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Kyle Hamilton should get strong consideration here, but Lovie Smith’s defense is predicated on getting pressure with the front four, which means there’s a more pressing need for an impact pass rusher off the edge. Thibodeaux brings ideal athleticism and explosiveness to a premium position, and concerns about his motor or love of the game are comical.

Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton goes No. 7 overall to the New York Giants — just six picks before the Texans have a shot to take him with their No. 13 overall pick, a gift from the Cleveland Browns.

The Texans use their extra Round 1 selection to take Northern Iowa tackle Trevor Penning.

Laremy Tunsil has the left tackle spot locked down, but the Texans need an upgrade on the other side. Penning still needs to refine his technique and improve his consistency, but he’s got a rare combination of size and athleticism for the position, giving him plenty of potential once he polishes up his game.

If the Texans take Penning, or any other tackle in the first round, it signals they are kicking Tytus Howard inside to play guard for the final year of his contract.

Houston uses their second-round pick (No. 37 overall) to take Washington cornerback Kyler Gordon. At No. 68 overall in Round 3, the Texans take a local product in Texas A&M running back Isaiah Spiller. With Houston’s extra third-round pick (No. 80 overall) thanks to their trade with the New Orleans Saints, the Texans take Ohio State defensive lineman Haskell Garrett.

2022 NFL draft: Trevor Penning scouting report

Everything NFL draft fans need to know about Northern Iowa offensive tackle Trevor Penning

One of the meanest offensive lineman in the 2022 NFL draft, Northern Iowa’s Trevor Penning looks to maintain that same level of physical play as he makes the jump to the next level.

Here is everything you need to know about UNI’s dominant blocker:

7 players we want the Chargers to draft in order to help Justin Herbert

Justin Herbert has gotten a lot of help from LA through free agency, but who do we most want to see the Chargers draft to build out Herbert’s team?

At Ducks Wire, we are primarily a website concerned with college athletics. We focus mostly on what happens throughout Eugene, and a decent portion of the west coast with the Pac-12.

However, when some of the best athletes to come through Oregon go on to do great things at the professional level, we certainly take notice and develop fandoms for their new teams. That’s why you have seen a number of Los Angeles Chargers jerseys being sold throughout Duck Stores around town, and why a new shipment of Atlanta Falcons jerseys will soon be on the way.

With Justin Herbert and Marcus Mariota now leading their respective teams, the blue and gold, and black and red have found a home in Eugene.

When it comes to Herbert, though, it may be hard to find an athlete who Oregon fans are more proud of. After growing up in Eugene and finding success at Sheldon High School, Herbert went on to bring a Rose Bowl victory to the Ducks, and he is now one of the most promising up-and-coming quarterbacks in the NFL. It’s safe to say that Duck fans are pretty protective of him, and hoping hard for his continued success at the next level.

With that being said, we obviously have an opinion on what the Chargers can best do in the upcoming draft to give him some weapons on offense or add to the protection in front of him. The Chargers have the 17th pick in the draft, and with those two needs in mind, these are the players who we most want to see land in LA this spring to help out Eugene’s favorite son.
