Two Florida transfers ranked among ESPN’s top 10 portal players

Two Florida Gators that have entered the transfer portal are among the 10 best available, according to ESPN’s latest player rankings update

Two Florida Gators that have entered the transfer portal are among the 10 best available, according to ESPN’s latest rankings update.

The transfer portal has turned into college football’s version of free agency, with high-profile players hitting the open market. Name, image and likeness deals play a big part in many decisions, but at the end of the day it’s all about talent.

ESPN says that Florida is losing to extremely talented players, especially compared to the rest of the crop. Edge rusher [autotag]Princely Umanmielen[/autotag] is ranked No. 7 overall by the industry leader, and running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] checks in at No. 9 on the list. Both are the first players mentioned at their respective positions.

“Umanmielen played in all 13 games during the 2022 season and had 39 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks,” staff writer Tom VanHaaren wrote.

“This season, he led the team this season in tackles for loss with 11.5, and also led the team in sacks with seven. He was mentioned as a possible selection in the upcoming NFL draft if he were to declare, but made a surprising decision to enter the transfer portal with a year of eligibility. He has been productive within the SEC and has the size and experience to make a big impact on a new team.”

Players in the transfer portal don’t have to leave the team, though. Umanmielen has publicly stated that he would consider staying based on the new defensive line coach hire, but he’s still expected to transfer out at this point.

Etienne is a different story. There’s little hope for a return there, and he could end up at Georgia. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound.

The Gators are mentioned among a long list of suitors for Penn defensive tackle Joey Slackman, who checks in at No. 8 between the two Gators mentioned above.

UGA football favored to land top transfer running back

Georgia football is favored to land a commitment from four-star Florida transfer running back

The Georgia Bulldogs are favored to land a commitment from Trevor Etienne, who is one of the top transfer running backs in the nation. Etienne is transferring from Florida.

247Sports ranks Etienne as the No. 14 player available in the transfer portal and the No. 1 running back. The 5-foot-9, 205-pound running back is explosive and a physical runner.

Florida fans weren’t happy to see Etienne enter the transfer portal and it will hurt even more for the Gators if he transfers to Georgia. As a sophomore, Etienne recorded 131 carries, 753 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Etienne is also a skilled pass catcher out of the backfield. Last season, he caught 21 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown.

On3 projects Etienne will commit to Georgia over several other schools. Georgia football is still looking for its first transfer commitment. The Bulldogs should be quite active in this transfer cycle considering how many outgoing players Georgia has.

8 transfer portal entrants that Alabama could pursue

Alabama has struck gold multiple times by landing stars from the transfer portal. Here are eight names currently in the portal to keep an eye on!

The window for undergraduates to enter the transfer portal opened up on Monday, Dec. 4. Since then, there has been a multitude of players that have entered the transfer portal.

Alabama has shown interest in Texas A&M defensive line transfer Lebbeus “LT” Overton. Other than that, there has not been confirmed interest that Alabama is pursuing any other transfers.

It will be interesting to see if Alabama decides to target any transfers that are currently available or wait until other players become available in the transfer portal.

Roll Tide Wire takes a look at eight transfer portal entrants that Alabama could look to pursue in the near future.

Social media reacts to departure of running back Trevor Etienne

Social media was ablaze following Trevor Etienne’s announcement on Thursday.

Florida football fans got some gut-wrenching news on Thursday when sophomore running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] announced that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal.

The news shook the Gator Nation to the core as the younger brother of NFL star running back Travis showed glimpses of potential that the elder has shown throughout his career on the gridiron.

The 5-foot-9-inch, 205-pound back from Jennings, Louisiana, rushed 249 times for 1,472 yards overall, averaging 5.9 yards per attempt and 14 touchdowns; he also caught 30 receptions for 238 yards and a score. Etienne finished second on the team in rushing yards with 719 in 2022 and 753 in 2023; he also averaged 24.8 yards per attempt over 26 kickoff returns.

Take a look below at the reactions from the fanbase on Twitter following the departure of a future star running back.

Florida’s future-star running back enters transfer portal

This one is a HUGE blow for the Gator Nation.

The Gator Nation got some of the worst news possible on Thursday when sophomore running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] announced via Instagram that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal.

The departure of the second-year standout represents the most devastating departure from the program so far after a third-straight losing season in Gainesville. Hopes were high that he would return to the Swamp but doubts were abound as well.

The 5-foot-9-inch, 205-pound back from Jennings, Louisiana, rushed 249 times for 1,472 yards overall, averaging 5.9 yards per attempt and 14 touchdowns; he also caught 30 receptions for 238 yards and a score.

Etienne finished second on the team in rushing yards with 719 in 2022 and 753 in 2023. He also averaged 24.8 yards per attempt over 26 kickoff returns. Suffice it to say, Etienne has been a bright spot on the offensive side of the ball and will leave a massive hole talent-wise on the roster.

“Trevor is one of our best,” head coach Billy Napier noted following the LSU game. “He’s not only one of the best competitors and players that we have, but he’s also one of the better young men in our program.

“His leadership, his work habits, the way he treats people, I mean he’s a class act. He’s been raised the right way. And he’s an elite competitor.”

Perhaps the inevitable return of Montrell Johnson — who shared touches with him in the backfield and led the team the last two years in rushing yards — convinced Etienne to seek greener pastures. Nonetheless, Napier and Co. have their work cut out this offseason building a team that can crack the .500 mark.

Travis Etienne’s brother enters transfer portal

The brother of running back Travis Etienne has entered the transfer portal.

Florida running back Trevor Etienne, brother of former Clemson tailback Travis Etienne, has entered the transfer portal, according to On3 Sports.

Trevor Etienne finished the 2023 season with 754 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 131 carries. The sophomore also had 172 yards and one score as a receiver.

As a four-star recruit in 2022, Trevor Etienne named Clemson a finalist along with LSU before ultimately committing to the Gators. The 5-foot-9, 205-pound rusher will have two years of eligibility remaining.

With Will Shipley’s status for next season still uncertain, Trevor Etienne could be a potential target for head coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers.

Could this be Michigan football’s running back of the future?

He could be a perfect fit for the maize and blue. #GoBlue

After this season, Michigan football will assuredly lose running back Blake Corum (who chose to come back for an extra year) and Donovan Edwards will have a decision to make.

While up-and-comers such as Kalel Mullings, Benjamin Hall, C.J. Stokes, and Cole Cabana could be integral parts of the offense next year, along with incoming freshmen Jordan Marshall and Micah Ka’apana, the Wolverines could look to the transfer portal for a fresh face.

Once the transfer portal opened, one name has long been rumored to be connected to the maize and blue. The problem was: he wasn’t in the transfer portal. But as of Thursday, he’s now in there.

Florida running back Trevor Etienne fits what the maize and blue want to do to a tee. He led the Gators in rushing last year, and the younger brother of former Clemson star Travis Etienne is a dynamic playmaker in the mold of a traditional Michigan tailback.

While it’s unclear whether or not he’ll end up in Ann Arbor, he’s at least now in the portal.

Etienne has two years of eligibility remaining and if Edwards returns, could provide a formidable one-two punch in the Michigan backfield. The Wolverines have occasionally lost players to Florida (most recently RJ Moten) via either the transfer portal or recruiting, but have rarely gained a player from Gainesville the other way.

Michigan is targeting several other key players in the portal, such as cornerback Upton Stout and quarterback Dante Moore.

Florida RB Trevor Etienne and older brother Travis featured in Chipotle commercial

Florida running back Trevor Etienne might be always be Travis’ little brother, but he’s gaining some star power of his own now too.

Maybe you’ve seen the Chipotle commercial featuring Florida running back Trevor Etienne and his brother, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne.

In the 30-second clip, titled “Bro,” the Etienne brothers get together for a training session and lunch (at Chipotle, of course). Throughout the video, Travis is constantly pushing Trevor to improve, even going as far as advising the amount of knots on his shoelaces.

But things change when the two begin ordering some food. Trevor lays down a confident and well-balanced order — a bowl with white rice, chicken, mild salsa, cheese and lettuce — and Travis quickly compliments him.

While the moment is 100% manufactured, it’s not far from what goes on in reality. ESPN Staff Writer David Hale wrote a feature on the brothers leading up to the Florida-Georgia game, and it’s clear that Travis only pushes Trevor so he can be better than him when the story is all written.

And, yes, the two call each other bro quite often. Hale opens with the story of both brothers texting each other during moments of great doubt. The first words of each message: Bro.

Connected by blood and name, the Etienne brothers have already reached terrific heights, albeit through different paths. Travis had to face the ins and outs of college football with zero experience. Talent and hard work led him to a prolific career at Clemson and now he’s a budding young star in the NFL.

Trevor might go farther, though. He’s more polished than Travis was at the same age and should be among the SEC’s top rushers next season. The six-year age gap allowed Trevor to learn with his brother.

“Trevor had a cheat code,” a former Clemson player said to Hale. “He had a front-row seat to just absorb everything Travis might not have even known he was given — all that experience and wisdom and expertise.”

Funny enough, Travis was the one who told Trevor not to go to Clemson. Being the supportive big brother he is, Travis wanted Trevor to carve his own path. Despite facing constant comparisons, Trevor never shrunk in the shadow of his brother.

Having a big brother like Travis simply motivated Trevor to be even better.

“No matter what I do, I’ll still be his little brother,” Trevor said. “But I looked at it as someone to look up to. Him setting all those records was just pushing me, showing me what could be done.”

Trevor is splitting carries with Montrell Johnson Jr. right now at Florida, but it’s clear that Etienne is the most dynamic piece of the Gators’ running game. He’ll be draft-eligible next season and leading the charge, assuming Johnson turns pro this offseason.

Hopefully, Trevor can break some of Travis’ records with the Gators.

Etienne’s Mom is not a fan of South Carolina, roasting the Gamecocks on social media

Etienne’s mom ribs South Carolina after Florida takes down the Gamecocks.

There are a lot of fans out there who dislike the South Carolina Gamecocks, with the Etienne brother’s mother, Donnetta, being one of those people.

As the mother of one of Clemson’s all-time best running backs, Donnetta knows all about the Gamecocks and already wasn’t a fan of the program. With her youngest son Trevor, a running back for the Florida Gators, Donnetta took to Twitter/X to share that she now has multiple reasons to not like the Gamecocks.

During Florida’s 41-39 win over South Carolina, Etienne’s mother tweeted, “Now I have multiple reasons not to like the South Carolina Lame Cocks,” a solid jab at Clemson’s top rivals. During the win, Trevor rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and even completed a pass for a two-point conversion.

Sophomore running back Trevor Etienne might miss Vanderbilt game

A Florida Gators running back is listed as questionable before the Vanderbilt game on Saturday.

The Florida Gators might suffer a major blow in the offensive game plan on Saturday, as sophomore running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne [/autotag]is listed as “questionable.”

The former Freshman All-SEC selection is dealing with an upper-body injury and Napier didn’t provide an update on the status of his running back. Etienne hasn’t been listed as the starter so far this season, yet has the most carries and yards out of the two main running backs.

If Etienne can’t dress on Saturday, Johnson is ready to take on more carries in Etienne’s absence.

“If Trevor can’t go, I trust the coaches to put me in the right position to make the right plays. If that means getting an extra load, I’m down for the challenge.”

Freshman Treyaun Webb would take place as the second-string ball carrier for Florida, followed by redshirt senior Eddie Battle, who’s seen very few snaps this year.

Etienne is averaging six yards a carry and 71.6 yards a game. The sophomore has scored twice on the ground this season.

The Florida Gators prepare for Homecoming week as the Vanderbilt Commodores come to town. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. EDT and will broadcast on the SEC Network.
