Lakers’ Trevor Ariza gives update on injury rehab

Los Angeles Lakers forward Trevor Ariza gave an update on how he feels after having ankle surgery earlier in the year.

The Los Angeles Lakers haven’t been able to see what Trevor Ariza looks like on the court this season.

After signing the veteran forward on a one-year deal over the summer, Ariza injured his ankle and underwent surgery that sidelined him for at least eight weeks.

Ariza explained Monday how he’s progressing as he slowly returns to action.

“I’ve been as of late just starting to run on my own, on my own body weight,” Ariza said. “Been on the court shooting, going through movements that I will probably have to get used to doing again. Conditioning, sprinting, lifting, shooting, a whole lot of that.”

Ariza added how he doesn’t have a definite date to return just yet. It will all depend on how doctors evaluate his progress and how his body responds to more strenuous on-court work.

The 36-year-old forward still needs to clear the eight-week timeline given to him when he had surgery, which is about a week away.

Lakers head coach Frank Vogel said during his media session Monday Ariza is “still a ways away” from returning, which he’s said often when discussing injuries to Ariza and Kendrick Nunn, who also doesn’t have a set return date from a knee injury.

Lakers’ Frank Vogel gives injury updates on Austin Reaves, Trevor Ariza

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel revealed how close Austin Reaves and Trevor Ariza are to returning to action.

The Los Angeles Lakers have dealt with several injuries to start the 2021-22 season.

Though some players, like LeBron James, have returned in recent games, there are still three players out due to respective injuries.

Trevor Ariza, Austin Reaves and Kendrick Nunn are the players that are still out. Nunn (knee) and Ariza (ankle) have yet to play in the regular season, while Reaves recently went out with a hamstring strain.

When all three return, it’s likely that they will all be involved in the rotation in some fashion, especially Ariza and Nunn.

Before the Lakers took on the Detroit Pistons Sunday, head coach Frank Vogel gave an update on Reaves and Ariza, via Mike Trudell of Spectrum SportsNet:

There’s no specific timetable for both, but it’s promising that Reaves is inching closer to a return. The undrafted rookie has been a terrific glue guy, especially in lineups comprising LeBron, Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis.

Anthony Davis: Lakers’ small lineups will improve when LeBron, Trevor Ariza return

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis explained how the team’s smaller lineups will benefit with additional size at forward.

After beginning the year with starting lineups placing Anthony Davis at the 4 and DeAndre Jordan at the 5, the Los Angeles Lakers have embraced the small-ball lineup.

Frank Vogel in recent games has slotted Davis at center right away instead of doing so later in the first quarter. The Lakers started Kent Bazemore, a 6-foot-4 wing, at the 4 against the Minnesota Timberwolves before he fell out of the rotation.

But with Talen Horton-Tucker’s return, Vogel has moved Carmelo Anthony to the starting group along with Horton-Tucker, Davis, Russell Westbrook and Avery Bradley.

It has not been the cure-all the Lakers hoped for, as Davis explained some cons to going small.

“It’s good when I’m at the 5; it gives us spacing. It gives Russ a lot of spacing to get downhill. But then on the other side, we switch our pick-and-rolls, so I’m guarding on the perimeter,” Davis said after the loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. “The offensive rebounding has kind of been a problem because we got smaller guys.”

Davis said the team needs to wait for LeBron James and Trevor Ariza to return for it to improve.

“It’ll look better when we have our bigger guards back: ‘Bron, Trevor. Now, we have size down on the glass,” the star big man said. “But guys are down there fighting, competing. That’s all we can ask for.”

There is optimism among the team that LeBron will return Friday against the Boston Celtics, though it isn’t confirmed yet. Ariza is still out after undergoing ankle surgery before the preseason started.

Lakers news: Trevor Ariza to be evaluated in eight weeks following ankle surgery

Los Angeles Lakers forward Trevor Ariza will be sidelined for at least eight weeks following a procedure on his ankle.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced Wednesday that Trevor Ariza underwent a procedure for his ankle and will be evaluated in eight weeks.

Ariza, who signed a one-year deal for the minimum this summer, was expected to be part of the starting five alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis in the frontcourt.

He did not appear in the first two preseason games against the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns because of what the team said was a sore right foot.

The given timetable does not mean Ariza will be out for eight weeks. Doctors will examine Ariza’s status and provide an update, so he could be out for more time.

Head coach Frank Vogel now has this to factor in for his rotations and lineups heading into the regular season.

Lakers news: LeBron James, Russell Westbrook out vs. Suns; Carmelo Anthony, Anthony Davis will play

View the full injury report and other roster notes as the Los Angeles Lakers face the Phoenix Suns.

LeBron James and Russell Westbrook will not play against the Phoenix Suns, head coach Frank Vogel said Tuesday.

James and Westbrook were also out in the preseason opener against the Brooklyn Nets, as the two are still out for rest.

However, Carmelo Anthony will make his debut with the Lakers, and Anthony Davis will be available, though Vogel didn’t specify if he’d play just the first quarter again.

Trevor Ariza is still out with a sore right foot.

Vogel also said he plans to sit one of the two centers, whether it’s DeAndre Jordan or Dwight Howard, and stagger them going forward. He hasn’t decided on the order yet. That could open up more center minutes for Davis.

Cam Oliver, one of the training camp players, got minutes at center in the fourth quarter against Brooklyn and could get more minutes this time around.

Lakers news: LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Trevor Ariza out vs. Nets

The Los Angeles Lakers will be out four key players in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Brooklyn Nets.

The Los Angeles Lakers will be without LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony and Trevor Ariza in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Brooklyn Nets, head coach Frank Vogel said Friday.

James, Westbrook and Anthony are out for general rest; Ariza has been dealing with a sore right foot since practice began the last few days, so he’ll be out as a precaution.

Vogel said Anthony Davis is expected to play only in the first quarter.

This allows everyone else to step up and show what they can do on the floor when James and Westbrook aren’t in the lineup, with Davis playing for just a quarter.

The starting lineup still isn’t confirmed yet, so moments like this are where players stand out.

Lakers’ Rajon Rondo reveals the new teammates he’s excited to play with

Rajon Rondo revealed some names of who he is excited to play with on the Los Angeles Lakers next season.

Rajon Rondo is back with the Los Angeles Lakers after not repping the purple and gold for a year, and he will team with new faces this time.

The Lakers overhauled the roster this offseason, which was likely going to be the case since the team had over 10 free agents entering the market.

After trading for Russell Westbrook, Los Angeles had to sign numerous veterans to one-year minimum deals to make the cap work, so many faces, both old and new, are here for the new season.

Rondo is one of those familiar faces returning to the franchise, and he has played with several of the additions before.

During his introductory conference, the 35-year-old guard revealed who he’s looking forward to playing with that he hasn’t teamed up with in the past.

“Carmelo (Anthony), obviously Russ (Westbrook), I just talked to Trev (Ariza),” Rondo said. “I’m looking forward to talking to Trev, learning his mind and his focus. Trev beat me a couple years back in the ’10 finals, so we had a lot of great battles.”

Rondo, who has had a beef with Westbrook in previous years, continued about letting bygones be bygones and focus on title No. 18.

“A lot of these guys are now teammates, I’m looking forward to putting everything in the past and putting it together for the greater good of the team and win a championship here,” Rondo said.

Rondo is projected to be the third point guard on the depth chart behind Westbrook and Kendrick Nunn. However, his familiarity with LeBron James and Anthony Davis and his relationship with head coach Frank Vogel could see him receive more minutes throughout the course of the season.

Rondo may not be a sharpshooting perimeter threat, but he knows how to facilitate an offense and set his teammates up for easy looks, which is a key skill to have at any moment.

Trevor Ariza explains the chemistry the Lakers must have this season

Newly signed forward Trevor Ariza detailed what the Los Angeles Lakers need to do to win a championship this season.

If it wasn’t already certain, the Los Angeles Lakers are going all in to win the NBA championship this season.

The Lakers found their third scoring option in Russell Westbrook after dealing Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrell and a 2021 first-round pick,

In free agency, the Lakers moved quickly to sign veterans Trevor Ariza, Dwight Howard, Wayne Ellington, Carmelo Anthony and Kent Bazemore on one-year deals.

Veterans such as Howard, who is returning to L.A. for the third time in his career, already understand the ways he must contribute on the court to give the Lakers the best shot at winning, no matter if he starts or comes off the bench.

Ariza, who is returning to the Lakers for the second time, is on the same boat as Howard, via Mike Trudell of Spectrum SportsNet:

It’s unclear what lineups Frank Vogel will roll out once the season starts, but Ariza should have a prominent role. He’s a versatile forward who has mostly played at power forward the last few seasons as his mobility and athleticism have declined.

Still, he’s capable of guarding multiple positions on the defensive end and converted 35% of his 3-pointers last year on 4.8 attempts. That should be useful in catch-and-shoot scenarios alongside Westbrook, LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Bleacher Report names Lakers a winner in 2021 free agency

The Los Angeles Lakers received praise from Bleacher Report for the business it’s done so far in free agency.

The Los Angeles Lakers have had one of the busiest offseasons this summer in terms of roster moves.

When the Lakers traded for star guard Russell Westbrook, the roster was trimmed to five players, though Alfonzo McKinnie is now waived. The Lakers needed to sign about 10 players through free agency to complete the 15-man squad.

Los Angeles didn’t have financial flexibility this summer to acquire the prominent names available in the free-agent class besides a $5.9 taxpayer MLE; so the Lakers desperately needed to lure veterans who would take the minimum.

The Lakers achieved that by signing Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Wayne Ellington, Trevor Ariza and Kent Bazemore on one-year minimum deals.

Even Malik Monk, 23, signed a minimum deal to compete for a championship and raise his value for next year’s free agency; he could be the most intriguing signing of the bunch. Kendrick Nunn, 26, signed for the MLE.

Los Angeles needed to surround LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Westbrook with a competent roster capable of filling in the gaps, and this group of players has recently shown they have the right combination of skills to execute on the court, at least on paper.

With these moves, Dan Favale of Bleacher Report listed the Lakers as one of the winners of the 2021 free agency period:

“Trading for Russell Westbrook has defined the Los Angeles Lakers’ offseason, but that’s not the entirety of it. They made other moves on the margins during actual free agency, and their roster makes more sense because of it.

Bagging Carmelo Anthony, Trevor Ariza, Kent Bazemore, Wayne Ellington and Malik Monk on minimum deals will beef up the spacing of a half-court offense that desperately needs breathing room. They are snipers of varying effectiveness and function — Ellington prefers to work in motion — but the Lakers jettisoned their two leading 3-point makers from last season (Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma) to nab Westbrook, one of the league’s worst jump shooters. Adding even league-average marksmen goes a long way under the circumstances.

Kendrick Nunn is a more awkward fit as someone who prefers to operate on-ball, but he provides more north-south jet fuel and converted 42.1% of his catch-and-fire triples last season. Snagging him for the taxpayer’s mid-level exception is a worthwhile talent-in-a-vacuum play.

Dwight Howard does nothing for the Lakers’ floor balance, but he comes cheap, has experience playing beside Anthony Davis and is a muuuch better rim-runner than Andre Drummond. Talen Horton-Tucker’s return also doesn’t help Los Angeles’ shooting, but a 20-year-old who can defend a bunch of different positions has value to a team that’s nearly barren of every other future asset.

None of these moves turn the Westbrook acquisition into a no-risk proposition. Nor does it excuse the Lakers decision to let Alex Caruso walk, despite his chemistry playing beside LeBron James and having the ability to keep him. But Los Angeles entered free agency with supremely limited flexibility following the Westbrook blockbuster and managed to flesh out its rotation in a way that promises actual depth and spacing.

Additionally, as of now, the list of Lakers moves doesn’t include overpaying Dennis Schroder. That’s a huge win.”

This will be one of the most captivating seasons for L.A. in quite some time, but only time will tell if L.A. made the right moves to bring home the franchise’s 18th championship, which would be the most for a single team in NBA history.

LeBron James responds to age criticisms of new Lakers roster

LeBron James has a message for the critics commenting on the age of the new Los Angeles Lakers roster.

After trading three players in a deal to acquire Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards, the Los Angeles Lakers needed to revamp the roster in a major way.

Los Angeles had over 10 free agents entering the market, which made matters more complicated in terms of retaining key pieces to the roster. Alex Caruso was a vital rotational reserve who departed to the Chicago Bulls on a four-year, $37 million deal because the Lakers didn’t want to pay him that.

So far, the Lakers have pursued several win-now veterans on minimum deals to round out the roster in hopes of optimizing the open championship window with LeBron James and Anthony Davis at the helm.

Veterans like Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Wayne Ellington, Trevor Ariza and Kent Bazemore have all joined L.A. to win a title.

But the moves have generated criticism from the NBA world because of the collective age of the majority of the roster.

Westbrook and Bazemore are 32; Ellington is 33; Howard is 35; James, Ariza and Marc Gasol, who confirmed he’ll stay for another season, are 36; Anthony is the most experienced at 37.

James took to his Twitter to respond to those criticisms involving the age of the roster, via SportsCenter:

It’s certainly important to have a balance between veterans and younger players. Davis, 28, checks that box. The Lakers also added Malik Monk (23), Kendrick Nunn (26) and re-signed Talen Horton-Tucker (20) to add to the young talent on the squad.

Los Angeles’ reasoning for signing these veterans is clear: They’re pushing all the chips on the table to win the franchise’s 18th championship with James still leading the way.
