Dolphins worked out trio of defensive linemen on Tuesday

Dolphins host tryouts on Tuesday.

The Miami Dolphins have lost linebackers to injury in back-to-back games, as Jaelan Phillips suffered a torn Achilles against the New York Jets, and Jerome Baker sustained an MCL injury against the Washington Commanders.

With that, the Dolphins are checking in on some defensive linemen, which could be in an effort to solidify the front seven.

On Tuesday, Miami held workouts for Trevon Coley, Carlos Davis and Justin Ellis.

Ellis, 32, was originally a fourth-round selection by the Oakland Raiders out of Louisiana Tech. After six seasons with the Raiders, he joined the Baltimore Ravens for three seasons and spent 2022 with the New York Giants. In 117 career games, he’s recorded 182 tackles (eight for a loss), five quarterback hits, three tipped passes and 1.5 sacks.

Coley, 29, went undrafted in 2016 after a collegiate career at Florida Atlantic. In his seven seasons as a pro, he’s bounced around between the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears and Washington. He’s appeared in 44 games, recording 100 tackles (14 for a loss), seven quarterback hits, 3.5 sacks, two tipped passes and two fumbles recovered.

Davis, 27, was a seventh-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2020 after playing for Nebraska in college. He spent three seasons with the Steelers before signing with the Atlanta Falcons this offseason. However, he didn’t make the final roster. Davis is currently on the roster of the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL. In 12 career games, he’s recorded 12 tackles (three for a loss), one sack and one quarterback hit.

The Dolphins may not end up signing any of these three, but they are names to keep in mind in case there are more injuries to Vic Fangio’s front.

Report: Titans signing defensive lineman Trevon Coley

The Titans are reportedly signing defensive lineman Trevon Coley.

The Tennessee Titans are once again reuniting with a familiar face along the defensive line.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Titans are signing defensive lineman Trevon Coley, who was previously with the team during the 2021 offseason.

Tennessee already had an open spot on the roster for Coley after waiving defensive back A.J. Moore on Sunday.

Coley, who spent time on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad in 2022, was signed by the Titans in June 2021, but he suffered an injury during the preseason that landed him on injured reserve, ending his season.

The Florida Atlantic product is the second familiar defensive lineman to reunite with the Titans in the past week, as Tennessee signed defensive lineman Kyle Peko last Monday.

In addition to Peko, the Titans also inked veteran D-lineman Michael Dwumfour recently.

All of these moves come on the heels of the Titans dealing with a rash of injuries in the position group. UDFA Shakel Brown was lost for the season, and neither Naquan Jones nor Tyler Shelvin suited up in preseason Week 2. Jones, in particular, has missed significant time.

Report: Bears plan to bring back DT Trevon Coley on practice squad

Trevon Coley was among the surprising cuts by the Bears on Tuesday. But it sounds like he could be back on the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears have trimmed their initial roster to 53 players, which featured some tough cuts.

Among those was defensive tackle Trevon Coley, who put together a dominant preseason in Chicago. In three games, Coley totaled 3 sacks and 6 quarterback hits.

But the good news is it sounds like Coley could be making a return to the Bears.

According to Jordan Schultz, Chicago plans on bringing back Coley to their practice squad if he isn’t signed by another team.

Coley is a vested veteran, so he doesn’t hit the waiver wire, and he’s free to sign with a team as a free agent. It sounds like Coley will sign to the Bears practice squad if he doesn’t get a 53-man roster opportunity elsewhere.

The waiver claim deadline is Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT.  Those waiver claims will be announced an hour later and then teams can begin filling out their practice squads.

We took a shot at predicting Chicago’s practice squad, which included Coley:

8 Bears bubble players who have earned a roster spot

Not everyone can stick on the Bears final roster, but here are eight players we believe made a great case following the preseason.

The regular season is just days away for the Chicago Bears now that both training camp and the preseason have concluded. But before they take the field against the San Francisco 49ers in week one, general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus must trim the roster down from 80 players to 53. This means plenty of tough decisions will be made regarding bubble players who have given everything they have since training camp began in late July.

Cutting 27 players isn’t easy for an NFL general manager and while some are easy to spot, it also becomes clear as to who has earned a place on the team. Here are eight players we believe have made a great case to stick on the Bears final roster.

10 Bears on the roster bubble who need strong performances vs. Browns

There are a number of Bears players on the roster bubble who need to impress in the preseason finale against the Browns.

The Chicago Bears will wrap the preseason against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, and there are a number of players vying for roster spots and starting jobs.

While the starters will play the first half, there are a number of players on the roster bubble who will get their opportunities to show why they’re deserving of a roster spot — whether it’s with Chicago or another team.

Ahead of Chicago’s preseason finale, we’re taking a look at some roster bubble players to keep an eye on against Cleveland:

1 player from each Bears position group to watch vs. Seahawks

The Bears will face the Seahawks on Thursday. Here’s one player at each position group we’re watching for Chicago.

The Chicago Bears will face off against the Seattle Seahawks in their second preseason game on Thursday night.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said that starters will be limited to around 6-10 reps — or a couple of series — with such a short turnaround. Still, there are plenty of players to keep an eye on — from rookies looking to make an impact to veterans fighting for a roster spot.

7 takeaways from 14th practice at Bears training camp

The Bears returned to the practice field following their preseason opener. Here’s what we learned from Day 14:

The Chicago Bears returned to Halas Hall on Monday for a non-padded practice following Saturday’s preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

There were plenty of updates from the media and fans in attendance. While it was a lighter, shorter practice on Monday, there were certainly some notable storylines with the offensive line, some promotions for players further down the depth chart and the returns of big-name players from injury.

There was plenty to digest from practice and press conferences with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, cornerback Kyler Gordon, wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. and quarterback Trevor Siemian.

Following Monday’s practice, here’s a look at what we learned from the 14th day of Bears training camp:

Bears roster bubble: Which players helped or hurt their cause in Week 1

Following the Bears’ Week 1 preseason win, here’s a look at which roster-bubble players impressed and disappointed vs. Chiefs.

The Chicago Bears opened the preseason with a 19-14 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, where there were plenty of players who stood out — either in a good way or bad way.

With the first roster cuts set for Tuesday — where GM Ryan Poles will have to trim the roster from 90 to 85 — there were a handful of players who helped their chances of competing for a spot on the 53-man roster with strong preseason outings against the Chiefs. And there were others who might’ve hurt their chances.

Studs and duds from Bears’ preseason win vs. Chiefs

We’re taking a look at the studs and duds from the Bears’ preseason win over the Chiefs, which included quite a few rookies.

The Chicago Bears opened the preseason with a 19-14 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday at Soldier Field. And it was thanks in large part to their rookies.

The Bears were held scoreless in the first half, but they rebounded to score 19 unanswered points in the second half. The Chiefs scored all 14 of their points in the first half.

While Bears starters saw action for a couple of series, fans got a look at the guys further down the depth chart. And there were some standout performances among them.

Bears sign CB Davontae Harris, DL Trevon Coley

The Bears announced the signings of CB Davontae Harris and DL Trevon Coley, who both were at Halas Hall for a workout on Thursday.

The Chicago Bears have signed cornerback Davontae Harris and defensive lineman Trevon Coley, the team announced Friday. Chicago waived defensive tackle Auzoyah Alufohai and safety Jon Alexander in corresponding moves.

Harris and Coley were among five free agents who worked out for the Bears on Thursday, and they’ve now earned a roster spot heading into the second week of training camp.

Harris is a former fifth-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018, and he’s bounced around over the last six seasons. Harris has spent time with five different teams, including the Bengals (2018), Denver Broncos (2019-20), Baltimore Ravens (2020), San Francisco 49ers (2021) and Los Angeles Chargers (2021).

Harris has appeared in 36 games, including nine starts, where he registered 59 tackles and four pass breakups.

Coley, a former undrafted free agent out of Florida Atlantic, has had stops with several teams, including most notably the Cleveland Browns (2016-18), Indianapolis Colts (2019), Arizona Cardinals (2020) and most recently the Tennessee Titans (2021).

Coley has appeared in 44 NFL games, including 31 starts, totaling 100 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss and 3.5 sacks. Coley played for Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, who was the Colts defensive coordinator from 2018-21.
