UFC 291 video: Gabriel Bonfim moves to 15-0 with quick tap of Trevin Giles, wants Neil Magny

Joe Rogan said Gabriel Bonfim’s “guillotine is just death” after he tapped out Trevin Giles in 73 seconds at UFC 291.

SALT LAKE CITY – “His guillotine is just death.”

Those were the word of Joe Rogan after [autotag]Gabriel Bonfim[/autotag] made quick work of [autotag]Trevin Giles[/autotag] in their featured UFC 291 prelim bout on Saturday at Delta Center.

Bonfim (15-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) remained undefeated in his MMA career when he locked up a guillotine choke on Giles (16-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) that forced him to tap out just 73 seconds in their welterweight fight.

It was a quick and dazzling finish, and you can watch the replay below (via Twitter):

After the fight, Bonfim called out Neil Magny for a future showdown at 170 pounds.

“I will be the champion of the this division,” Bonfim told Rogan through an interpreter during his post-fight interview. “I’ve been working a lot to get better and every fight there’s a new Gabriel.”

UFC 291 Jabapalooza: Trevin Giles says no chance Gabriel Bonfim’s jab is better, faster

Ahead of UFC 291 in Salt Lake City, does welterweight Trevin Giles have a sign on his back that says “WILL ONLY FIGHT PROSPECTS”?

SALT LAKE CITY – Does [autotag]Trevin Giles[/autotag] have a sign on his back that says “WILL ONLY FIGHT PROSPECTS”?

He must wonder that sometimes. Giles played host to Roman Dolidze’s third UFC fight. He was the opponent for Dricus du Plessis’ second bout in the promotion. He’s been an early opponent in the UFC tenures of a lot of up-and-comers lately.

Saturday, it happens again when Giles (16-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) takes on unbeaten welterweight prospect Gabriel Bonfim (14-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) to close out the UFC 291 prelims on ABC and ESPN at Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Their fight leads into the main card on pay-per-view.

“On one hand, it’s like a compliment to me,” Giles said at Wednesday’s media day. “You get these guys that are coming in that are good, and the UFC, to me, I feel like they’re just trying to see how good they are, or if they’re as good as what people think they are. I’m a name that they think of. So to me, in a way, it’s like the UFC saying they recognize my talent. But I would like to start getting more names and stuff, too, not just the new guys coming in.”

Giles, who has back-to-back wins over Louis Cosce and Preston Parsons, acknowledged his opponent brings much to the table. Bonfim, along with his brother Ismael, got to the UFC through Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022. He won his official UFC debut with a quick submission.

“I think he’s good,” Giles said. “The guy is a good fighter. He’s undefeated for a reason. He has some decent boxing, and then he kind of pairs his takedown attempts pretty well with that – get you worried about his boxing and then get a takedown on you. He has good transitional submissions. … I think that he’s good. I think that he’s a real competitor, and I’m excited for the fight.”

But Giles had to pump the brakes on the pro-Bonfim talk when told his opponent thinks his jab is better. Giles thinks he has the best jab in the UFC.

“It’s not better than mine. No way. No way (his jab is quicker). I mean, we get to fight. I respect that. That’s cool. But no, I highly doubt that (he’s quicker). But I guess we’ll find out.”

UFC on ESPN 43 medical suspensions: Cory Sandhagen faces more time off than Marlon Vera

Four fighters face 180-day medical suspensions as a result of UFC on ESPN 43 bouts, but headliners [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] and [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] are not among them.

UFC on ESPN 43 took place this past Saturday at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The event was overseen by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which suspended all 20 fighters for medical reasons after their bouts, according to a list published Wednesday by the commission.

CJ Vergara, Daniel Pineda and Lucas Alexander all won their bouts, but walked away with 180-day suspensions, as did Steven Peterson, who lost his retirement bout to Alexander.

It’s important to note fighters can return sooner than the expiration date of their medical suspension should they receive proper medical clearance from a doctor. In addition, the TDLR does not list reasons for medical suspensions – just durations.
