Broncos OLB Bradley Chubb eager for challenge of 49ers LT Trent Williams

“[He’s] one of the best tackles in the league so it’s going to be a great challenge for us,” Bradley Chubb said of Trent Williams.

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Bradley Chubb will be going up against San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams on Sunday Night Football this week.

A 34-year-old veteran with nine Pro Bowl selections on his resume, Williams has continued to play at a high level late in his career, earning first-team All-Pro recognition last season.

“[He’s] one of the best tackles to play the game,” Chubb said Wednesday. “[I] look at it as a challenge when it comes down to those one-on-one matchups.”

Through two games, Williams has one false start penalty and zero sacks allowed. Chubb has totaled four quarterback hits and two sacks through two weeks.

“The savviness that he has [makes him great],” Chubb said of Williams. “You see him on film, doing pass rush moves on guys — knocking hands off, knocking them on ground, and stuff in the run game.

“He’s just very athletic in pads. He has great feet. Like I said, one of the best tackles in the league so it’s going to be a great challenge for us.”

Chubb might not line up against Williams on every play — Randy Gregory and the team’s backup rotational rushers might all face the All-Pro at various points of Sunday’s game. Whoever’s going up against the tackle will face a tough test, one Chubb is ready to embrace.

“We just have to do our thing,” Chubb said. “We know what they present, what they bring. We just have to be able to match that intensity.”

6 49ers who need to be better in Week 2

The 49ers need these players who struggled in Week 1 to step up in Week 2:

The list of things that went wrong for the 49ers in their Week 1 game vs. the Bears is extensive. Pointing at one player or one play simply doesn’t do justice to the sheer volume of big and small things that ultimately led to a 19-10 upset loss in Chicago.

One of the issues the 49ers had was a handful of players they expect to rely on did not play particularly well. A mistake here and there is one thing, but too many good pieces on both sides of the ball had subpar outings to open the season.

We went through the list and found six players who need to play well in Week 2 after they struggled to some degree in Chicago:

Seahawks vs. 49ers: 6 interesting matchups to watch in Week 2

To keep that streak going, the Seahawks will have to win several individual matchups.

The Seahawks earned an emotional victory over Russell Wilson and the Broncos last week in front of a huge national audience. Next up, they’ll face the NFC West rival 49ers on the road. Seattle has dominated this series in recent years, having won four in a row and 15 of the last 17 meetings overall.

To keep that streak going, the Seahawks will have to win several individual matchups. Here are six we will be keeping a close eye on Sunday afternoon.

6 key 49ers players to watch against the Bears in Week 1

We’re taking a look at six important 49ers players to watch during Sunday’s season opener against the Bears.

The Chicago Bears open the 2022 NFL regular season against an opponent that was on the doorstep of playing in Super Bowl LVI in the San Francisco 49ers.

Coming off a 10-7 season, the 49ers are loaded yet again with a playoff-caliber roster and are looking to start the season off on a positive note. They do have some notable changes, however, that are worth watching, including their quarterback swap.

But there’s more players on the 49ers to watch than just the quarterback, although all eyes are going to be on that situation all season long. Here are six key opponents to watch when the Bears and 49ers meet up on the lakefront this Sunday.

49ers name team captains, QB Trey Lance not among them

The 49ers named their six captains for the 2022 season. QB Trey Lance didn’t make the cut this time.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced their team captains for the 2022 season. Quarterback Trey Lance was not among the players voted into the group of six chosen by head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Shanahan told reporters he wanted six captains this year, so he took the six players that received the most votes from the team. Here’s the list:

DL Arik Armstead
DE Nick Bosa
TE George Kittle
FS Jimmie Ward
LB Fred Warner
LT Trent Williams

The group selected has a clear theme. They’re all at least three-year veterans, and they’re all stars at their respective positions. While teams typically have their QB in the group of captains, Lance will still need to prove himself worthy of that distinction with his play on the field. Earning the respect of teammates in practice is important, but nothing counts until it starts amounting to wins.

Shanahan did say Lance finished seventh in the voting and Deebo Samuel was eighth, but he went in knowing he wanted six players to wear the “C” on their jersey this season. That left the young QB on the outside looking in.

Regardless of captain status though, Lance is the leader the offense will look to in the huddle during games. If he proves himself in those moments and plays well, he’ll be a shoo-in captain next year. If he doesn’t, the 49ers could have a much bigger problem on their hands.

Ryan Kerrigan grateful to be named as one of the ’90 greatest’ in Washington history

Ryan Kerrigan is honored to be named as one of the “90 greatest” in franchise history. And he’s also happy for Trent Williams.

It’s been a busy summer for former Washington defensive end Ryan Kerrigan. Kerrigan signed a one-day contract with Washington in July so could he retire with the franchise where he spent the first nine seasons of his NFL career.

Next, head coach Ron Rivera brought Kerrigan onto the coaching staff to “shadow” the defensive coaches in an effort to see if coaching was something the all-time franchise leader in sacks wanted to do.

During his retirement announcement in July, Kerrigan mentioned coaching as a possibility for him moving forward.

On Thursday, Kerrigan received another honor as he was one of 10 men named to the “90 greatest” players/coaches in Washington’s 90-year franchise history.

Afterward, Kerrigan spoke of the prestigious honor.

“It’s pretty damn cool, man,” Kerrigan said according to Bijan Todd of NBC Sports Washington. “Obviously, 90-year history of this franchise—to be part of that group is pretty special to me.”

Several players who played with Kerrigan also were honored, such as Chris Cooley, Santana Moss, London Fletcher, DeAngelo Hall and longtime teammate, Trent Williams.

Williams was Washington’s first-round pick in 2010, while Kerrigan was the first-round pick in 2011.

Kerrigan was happy to be honored alongside Williams.

“I always loved Trent as a teammate, loved him as a friend, and it’s awesome to still see him playing so well,” Kerrigan said. “Definitely a well-deserved honor for him as well.”

The pair were teammates for nine seasons in Washington and often represented the franchise in the Pro Bowl.

Kerrigan spent the 2020 season with the Philadelphia Eagles. During his nine seasons with Washington, he appeared in 156 games and recorded 95.5 sacks.

Washington names 10 players to franchise’s ’90 greatest’ list

Ryan Kerrigan, Trent Williams, Chris Cooley and Santana Moss were among Washington’s additions to the “90 greatest” list.

To commemorate 90 years as an NFL franchise, the Washington Commanders named 10 former greats to their “90 greatest” list on Thursday.

Washington announced nine former players and one former coach to the list at the team’s annual Welcome Home Luncheon at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill.

The list was trimmed to 10 after the organization began a fan vote in July. Here is the complete list:

  • DE Ryan Kerrigan (2011-2020)
  • LT Trent Williams (2010-2019)
  • WR Santana Moss (2005-2014)
  • TE Chris Cooley (2004-2012)
  • DT Darryl Grant (1981-1990)
  • LB London Fletcher (2007-2013)
  • CB DeAngelo Hall (2008-2017)
  • CB Champ Bailey (1999-2003)
  • DC Larry Peccatiello (1981-1993)
  • RB Stephen Davis (1996-2002)

Interestingly enough, all but Grant and Peccatiello were with Washington after owner Daniel Snyder bought the team in 1999. However, it’s difficult to dispute any of the players on the list.

Bailey is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, while Williams is still active with the San Francisco 49ers — and one of the NFL’s best offensive tackles.

Former quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III were among those on the ballot that didn’t make the final 10.

15 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo sitting out preseason finale

The 49ers have 15 players and also Jimmy Garoppolo not suiting up in Houston.

The 49ers will rest a handful of starters with a slew of injured players also sitting out their preseason finale in Houston. ESPN’s Nick Wagoner tweeted out the list of 16 players who won’t play for San Francisco in their final tune up before the regular season. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, unsurprisingly, is among the 16.

Here’s the full list of players who won’t be in action for the showdown in H-Town:

QB Jimmy Garoppolo
RB Elijah Mitchell (Hamstring)
OL Daniel Brunskill (Hamstring)
RT Mike McGlinchey (Knee)
LT Trent Williams
DE Nick Bosa
DL Arik Armstead (Knee)
DL Javon Kinlaw
LB Azeez Al-Shaair
LB Fred Warner
LB Dre Greenlaw
CB Emmanuel Moseley (Hamstring)
CB Ambry Thomas (Knee)
CB Charvarius Ward (Hamstring)
S Jimmie Ward (Hamstring)
S Dontae Johnson (Ribs)

The 49ers have taken it slow with Kinlaw returning from reconstructive ACL surgery last year. He played a lot in the team’s win over the Vikings on Aug. 20, so it makes sense they wouldn’t rush him back to action five days later.

It’s also not a surprise Williams and Bosa aren’t playing. The left tackle and defensive end are among the best players at their position in the sport. They don’t need a preseason tune up that risks injury.

Armstead is back in practice after missing a bulk of training camp with a sprained MCL. He’d likely play if this was a regular season game, but there’s no need to push his knee for an exhibition finale.

The good news for the 49ers is among the players out with injuries, it sounds like Ward is the only one who’ll miss Week 1 of the regular season. McGlinchey’s health is up in the air as well, though head coach Kyle Shanahan is optimistic the former first-round pick should be available for the opener.

Trent Williams Has High Praise for Vikings Lineman

The 49ers All-Pro believes in the second-year tackle

The Vikings might have gotten a steal in the draft last year.

In the 2020 NFL draft, the Vikings were very interested in trading with the Washington Commanders for All-Pro tackle Trent Williams. It came out on day three of the draft that Williams wouldn’t play for the Vikings so he wound up in San Francisco.

Upon arrival, Williams has been a massive difference maker, dominating for the 49ers and earning a league-high extension for his troubles.

After day two of joint practices, Williams spoke about his growing relationship with the second-year tackle Christian Darrisaw.

Considering he was just compared to Williams, the fact that his relationship is growing with the All-Pro is a great sign.

Darrisaw is primed for a great season opposite Brian O’Neill.
