How talented is the Oklahoma Sooners roster ahead of 2023?

According to recruiting rankings over the last 5 years, the Sooners should have one of the best rosters in 2023. But is that an accurate reflection of this roster?

We heard in the build-up to last season that the Oklahoma Sooners had one of the more talented rosters in the country. People (including me) pointed to that analysis as to why Oklahoma should be a contender in 2022. Some (not me) pointed to that analysis as to why 2022 was a coaching failure.

Based on recruiting rankings over the last five years, the Oklahoma Sooners should have one of the best rosters in college football. Based on recruiting rankings from the last five cycles, the Sooners have the eighth-best roster ahead of 2023. Brad Crawford of 247Sports explains:

Recruiting is the lifeblood of any successful program, and that’s no different at Oklahoma, a blue-blood accustomed to winning big. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen in Year 1 under coach Brent Venables, who came over to the Sooners following a lengthy tenure as Clemson’s top recruiter on staff under Dabo Swinney. The arrival of three five-stars in the 2023 recruiting cycle, however, is going to be a shot in the arm for Oklahoma prior to the school’s entry to the SEC in 2024. According to 247Sports’ recruiting rankings, Oklahoma has the second-most talented roster in the Big 12. You can probably guess who owns the league’s most lethal collection of talent. – Crawford, 247Sports

Oklahoma and Brent Venables have done a lot over the last two recruiting cycles to bring in talent from both the high school and transfer portal ranks. But as we saw last year when Oklahoma supposedly had one of the better rosters according to high school recruiting evaluations, it didn’t pan out to wins.

That doesn’t mean the analysis or rationale is wrong. The top of the list is carried by Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State, three teams that most would argue are the most talented teams in the country.

But given the turnover that Oklahoma’s undergone since Venables has taken over, do recruiting rankings prior to the coaching change accurately reflect the talent on the Sooners’ roster?

Oklahoma’s last two recruiting classes were strong, but there aren’t a lot of players left over from the three recruiting classes prior to Brent Venables’ arrival.

Oklahoma had the No. 4 recruiting class in 2019 on the strength of the signings of [autotag]Spencer Rattler[/autotag], [autotag]Jadon Haselwood[/autotag], [autotag]Trejan Bridges[/autotag], and [autotag]Theo Wease[/autotag]. All four of those players are gone. [autotag]Andrew Raym[/autotag], [autotag]Reggie Grimes[/autotag], and [autotag]Nate Anderson[/autotag] are the top players remaining from the 2020 class but haven’t ascended into star players for the Sooners just yet.

The top three players in the 2021 class, [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Clayton Smith[/autotag], and [autotag]Mario Williams[/autotag], are gone as well.

So, while the recruiting at Oklahoma has been good, the strength of the Sooners’ recruiting classes from 2019-2021 isn’t reflected on the 2023 roster. Given the amount of roster turnover that Oklahoma has undergone since Venables has taken over, these “talent rankings” don’t adequately reflect where Oklahoma is as a roster right now unless you look strictly at the last two recruiting classes.

But that doesn’t mean this isn’t a group capable of reasserting the Sooners as Big 12 contenders. Oklahoma brought in one of the best transfer portal classes in the first phase of the portal. Specifically, on the defensive side of the ball, the Sooners brought in several impact players. [autotag]Dasan McCullough[/autotag], [autotag]Reggie Pearson[/autotag], [autotag]Jacob Lacey[/autotag], and [autotag]Rondell Bothroyd[/autotag] could all start for the Sooners, but at least will play significant roles for the Sooners.

Brent Venables and his staff have added talent over the last two offseasons. They have a better roster than they did a year ago, especially on the defensive side of the ball. There’s optimism that will reveal itself on the field in a wide-open Big 12 in 2023.

ESPN re-ranks the 2019 recruiting classes, where do the Oklahoma Sooners fall?

ESPN took a look back at the 2019 recruiting cycle and re-ranked the top 10. Where did OU land?

As the Oklahoma Sooners and the rest of the nation wind down the 2022 recruiting cycle with national signing day on Feb. 2, it’s important to remember recruiting classes are seldom finished products. Progression isn’t always linear and just like NFL draft classes, the recruiting classes can rise to the occasion of their billing or they can fizzle by not providing the expected returns.

In 2019, ESPN had Oklahoma’s class ranked fourth nationally at the time of signing. Buoyed by the transfer arrival of Jalen Hurts and the commitment of the top quarterback in the class Spencer Rattler, this group has shown some promise, but hasn’t really taken over as the top players on the Oklahoma Sooners. As such, in ESPN’s re-rank of the 2019 recruiting classes (ESPN+), the Oklahoma Sooners have fallen to No. 10. The Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide flipped the top two spots and the Ohio State Buckeyes saw a huge jump from No. 16 to No. 3 in the re-ranking.

Here’s what ESPN’s Craig Haubert had to say about that Sooners’ recruiting class.

This class gets credit for time served, as many of the players who contributed have since moved on from the program. Contributing to a pair of conference titles and a playoff appearance, this top-five class didn’t quite meet expectations but certainly flashed. Transfer QB Jalen Hurts delivered, and highly touted Spencer Rattler looked to be the next superstar Sooners QB coming off a promising 2020 season. It was short-lived, as he was replaced and transferred. Five-star WR Jadon Haselwood most closely met high expectations in 2021 when he led the team in receptions, but he will be playing elsewhere (Arkansas) in 2022 as well. – Haubert, ESPN

Of the top five players in 247Sports rankings from 2019, only Theo Wease remains with the program heading into 2022. Jadon Haselwood (Arkansas), Spencer Rattler (South Carolina) and Austin Stogner (South Carolina) each transferred out since the end of the 2021 regular season. Trejan Bridges is dealing with legal troubles after an alleged armed robbery that saw him dismissed from the team in the spring.

The other significant contributor from this class (so far) was Rhamondre Stevenson, who was used as part of the rotation with Trey Sermon and Kennedy Brooks in 2019. A suspension limited his work in the 2020 season, but his return rejuvenated the Oklahoma Sooners’ offense, helping it overcome two early season losses and win the Big 12 title. Off to the NFL, he was Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded rookie running back in 2021.

There are still significant contributors on the roster with Woodi Washington arguably the top player remaining from the class. Theo Wease has been really good for the Sooners, tying for the team lead in receptions in 2020 before a knee injury kept him out of 2021. He’ll have a shot to once again be one of Oklahoma’s lead receivers in his return to the field in 2022.

Jeremiah Criddell and Marcus Stripling have shown some promise and there’s the possibility that Stripling could be the next man up at defensive end with Nik Bonitto and Isaiah Thomas headed to the NFL.

The rest of the class is still largely unproven, but with 12 starters lost via the NFL draft or the transfer portal, there are opportunities for these now-veterans of the team to make a significant impact in 2022 and beyond.

Report: Mikey Henderson dismissed from Oklahoma football program

According to a release from the Oklahoma Sooners athletics department, Mikey Henderson has been dismissed from the team.

Just over two months ago, former Oklahoma Sooners Trejan Bridges and Seth McGowan were dismissed from the University of Oklahoma and brought up on felony charges. Now there’s a third member of the Oklahoma Sooners football team that has been charged as part of the same incident.

It was reported earlier this evening that Mikey Henderson would face a felony stemming from the same alleged incident that Bridges and McGowan were a part of.

Now, per a release from the University of Oklahoma, Henderson is no longer a part of the program.

In the alleged incident that occurred in April, Norman police responded to a 911 call where the victim described being robbed and assaulted by, at the time, only Bridges and McGowan. Now that Henderson has been named to the report, he suffered the same fate as his teammates and was dismissed from the team by head coach Lincoln Riley.

Sooners Wire will provide more details as they are made available.

Report: Arrest warrant issued for Oklahoma Sooners running back Mikey Henderson

According to reports, an arrest warrant has been issued for Oklahoma Sooners running back Mikey Henderson.

According to a report from SI Sooners’ site, an arrest warrant has been issued for running back Mikey Henderson. This is part of the ongoing investigation that involved fellow teammates Trejan Bridges and Seth McGown. The two were later removed from the program entirely.

The Norman Police Department has submitted a request for an arrest warrant to the Cleveland County District Attorney’s office for University of Oklahoma football player Mikey Henderson, a Norman PD spokeswoman told SI Sooners on Tuesday.

Norman PD public information officer Sarah Jensen said NPD investigators have determined that Henderson is the third party involved in an alleged armed robbery on April 15 at the Crimson Park Apartments that resulted in the arrest of OU football players Trejan Bridges and Seth McGowan.

It would be hard to fathom that if Henderson was indeed the third party in the alleged robbery that he wouldn’t suffer the same fate as the other two involved. Head coach Lincoln Riley will likely dismiss him from the program as well.

Henderson was part of the 2020 recruiting cycle. He was the No. 12 athlete in the country according to 247Sports composite rankings and a four-star recruit. Henderson was expected to have an expanded role with the team following the dismissal of McGowan. It appears that LSU transfer Tre Bradford will likely take on any extra snaps at running back that doesn’t go to Kennedy Brooks or Seth McGowan.

Sooners Wire will pass along any other news as it becomes available.

Oklahoma Football Notebook: DeMarco Murray, Jadon Haselwood, Trejan Bridges and Eric Gray talk Thursday

Oklahoma running backs coach DeMarco Murray, WR Jadon Haselwood, WR Trejan Bridges and RB Eric Gray met with the media on Thursday.

Spring football for the Oklahoma Sooners continues to be in full swing with the annual spring game just 16 days away on April 24.

After a year where the offense for the Sooners took a little bit of a mild step back from the lofty standards Lincoln Riley had previously set, fans are very excited to see what they can look like on that side of the ball this season in the second year with starting quarterback Spencer Rattler.

Pair Rattler’s growth with several key returning players and additions, and the video game numbers Riley has managed to put up in the past may very well be back again in 2021.

On Thursday, Oklahoma running backs coach DeMarco Murray, wide receiver Jadon Haselwood, wide receiver Trejan Bridges and running back Eric Gray discussed the latest with the team going through spring practices. Here are some of the highlights of what they had to say:

Spencer Rattler: “Me and Trejan Bridges have some of the best chemistry on the team”

Suspended Oklahoma WR Trejan Bridges expected to make 2020 debut in Big 12 Championship

Oklahoma’s long await is over. The Sooners have been getting asked about the status of suspended players since it all started last Dec..

Oklahoma’s long await is over.

The Sooners have been getting asked about the status of suspended players since it all started last Dec.. Oklahoma was missing a starter in Ronnie Perkins and two key contributors in Rhamondre Stevenson and Trejan Bridges against LSU in the Peach Bowl. They were suspended due to a failed drug test ahead of the College Football Playoff.

Perkins and Stevenson returned on time, but Bridges didn’t. Perkins’ return has made a really good defense better and Stevenson has made teams respect Oklahoma’s running game more over the last four games. And now we’ll see what Bridges can do.

Sooners Wire can confirm the reports from SoonerScoop.com and The Football Brainiacs that Oklahoma is expecting Bridges to play in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday. Since Perkins and Stevenson returned, Bridges has taken to Twitter to discuss his frustrations over the wait.

Bridges made an impact during his freshman season albeit a small one. He caught a big touchdown against Iowa State during Oklahoma’s run to their fifth-straight Big 12 Championship.

The Carrollton, Texas, native came to the Sooners in the 2019 recruiting class as a five-star recruit according to Rivals. Lincoln Riley recently compared his playing style to Tylan Wallace’s whenever he was asked during Oklahoma State week.

It is undetermined what kind of impact Bridges can have in his first game. Unlike Jadon Haselwoood who has been rotating back in slowly, Bridges has been healthy and practicing since his suspension started last Dec.. His ability to take the top off a defense with his speed and competitiveness at the catch point could definitely help in the Big 12 Championship.

Oklahoma and Iowa State will play in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.

Oklahoma sophomore WR Trejan Bridges voices frustration over NCAA suspension

Oklahoma WR Trejan Bridges voices his frustration on Twitter about still being suspended ahead of the Sooners Bedlam showdown tonight.

Oklahoma wide receiver Trejan Bridges has been missing from the team all season after being suspended prior to last season’s College Football Playoff Semifinal against LSU.

The players he was suspended along with, Ronnie Perkins and Rhamondre Stevenson, have both made their returns to action a few weeks ago. But, Bridges has remained out and is inactive again today for the Sooners’ game tonight against Oklahoma State.

Lincoln Riley has been unable to really shed much light on his situation, but one thing that has been made clear today is Bridges’ frustration with having missed close to a full season at this point.

He took to Twitter today to make his feelings known:

It will be very interesting to see if Oklahoma can find a way to get him back before season’s end. He was a highly-touted recruit out of high school and Lincoln Riley has even compared him to Oklahoma State’s star wideout Tylan Wallace.

As for the guys in action, they will host Bedlam tonight at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CT.
