Jaguars open practice windows for Oluokun, Wingard; release CB

The Jaguars made a trio of roster moves Tuesday, opening the 21-day injured reserve practice windows for linebacker Foyesade Oluokun and safety Andrew Wingard, and releasing cornerback Tre Flowers.

Oluokun was designated to return from the injured reserve on Tuesday. Wingard, who was placed on the reserve during the preseason, was designated to return in August.

Oluokun, Jacksonville’s starting middle linebacker, led the Jaguars in tackles with 22 on the season when he went down with a foot injury against Buffalo in Week 3, leading to his placement on the injured reserve.

Since signing with Jacksonville in 2022, Oluokun has collected 379 tackles with 23 for loss and 5.5 sacks, one interception, 13 defended passes and three forced fumbles.

Wingard suffered a knee injury during one of the Jaguars’ July training camp practices, leading him to miss Jacksonville’s three preseason games and the first seven weeks of the season.

An undrafted signee by Jacksonville in 2019, Wingard stuck with the club and has compiled 250 tackles including eight for loss, two sacks, five interceptions, nine defended passes and three forced fumbles in 78 appearances including 26 defensive starts.

Flowers began the season on Jacksonville’s practice squad but was signed to the active roster in Week 2 when starting cornerback Tyson Campbell was placed on the injured reserve.

Flowers appeared in four games and made three tackles. His release follows Campbell’s return from the reserve in Week 7.

The Jaguars’ active roster currently stands at 51 players.

Jaguars place CB Tyson Campbell on IR; make two corresponding moves

Jacksonville placed starting cornerback Tyson Campbell on their injured reserve Thursday, allowing him to rest for at least four games as he recovers from a hamstring injury suffered against Miami in Week 1.

Campbell will be eligible for activation from the injured reserve in Week 6, before the Jaguars travel to London for two weeks, to face Chicago on Oct. 13 and New England Oct. 20.

In corresponding moves, Jacksonville signed practice squad cornerback Tre Flowers to its active roster, and filled Flowers’ practice squad vacancy by signing safety Andre Chachere.

Campbell went down after colliding with Miami’s Jaylen Waddle as the wide receiver broke outside on an extended corner route, leading the corner to exit the game. Campbell was flagged for pass interference as the pass from Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa fell incomplete.

Campbell finished with two tackles in the contest, including one for loss, a three-yard run stop against Miami running back Raheem Mostert in the third quarter.

Jacksonville signed Campbell to a four-year, $76.5 million contract extension this July, following his six-game absence last season due to multiple soft tissue injuries, to his hamstring and quadriceps.

Through 44 appearances with the Jaguars, Campbell has recorded 205 tackles including seven for loss, six interceptions, 30 defended passes and two fumble recoveries.

Backup Jaguars cornerbacks, Montaric Brown and rookie Jarrian Jones, should be expected to see an uptick in playing time with Campbell unavailable for the coming weeks. Brown logged 19 snaps against Miami in Week 1; Jones tallied 17.

The duo combined for four tackles against the Dolphins, with Brown making three.

Flowers signed with Jacksonville this offseason after spending the 2023 season with Atlanta, under former Falcons and current Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen.

Flowers logged 59 defensive snaps with the Jaguars this preseason, posting six total tackles and two defended passes.

The 2018 fifth-round NFL draft pick by Seattle has compiled 283 tackles including four for loss, two sacks, four interceptions, 22 passes defended and five forced fumbles over 90 appearances, including 44 starts.

Chachere entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Houston in 2018. He jumped around practice squads with the Texans, Detroit, Arizona, Carolina and Indianapolis until joining Philadelphia in 2021 and filling core special teams roles for the Eagles for two seasons.

Chachere returned to the Cardinals as an active roster member in 2023, making five starts over 17 appearances.

In 40 games and six starts, Chachere has produced 50 tackles with one for loss and three defended passes.

Chachere is the second safety Jacksonville has added to its practice squad in recent days. The Jaguars picked up Zechariah McPhearson after Pittsburgh signed safety Terrell Edmunds away from the unit to its active roster earlier this week.

Flowers, Edmunds signings continue Jaguars’ vital secondary rebuild

Tre Flowers, Terrell Edmunds signings continue Jaguars’ secondary rebuild

One important aspect of Jacksonville’s busy 2024 offseason has been the team’s necessary secondary rebuild.

The Jaguars released two starting defensive backs from last season earlier this year, cornerback Darious Williams and safety Rayshawn Jenkins, and have added six since, including four veteran free-agent signings and two rookie selections in the NFL draft.

The moves weren’t coincidental or business as usual.

They were intentional, a concerted effort by Jacksonville’s front office to revamp the back five of the Jaguars’ defense after the team allowed 239.8 passing yards and 1.59 passing touchdowns per game in 2023, both stats ranking No. 26 in the NFL.

The first addition, cornerback Ronald Darby, is expected to take over for Williams at outside corner, opposite Jacksonville’s 2021 second-round draft pick, Tyson Campbell.

Darby, a nine-season pro, has started 95 games in his career and tallied eight interceptions and 97 passes defended. Per Pro Football Reference, Darby allowed sub-50% completion percentages in coverage in 2022 and 2023, with a career-best 38.9% mark two years ago.

Safety Darnell Savage joined Jacksonville shortly after Darby, after five seasons with his drafted team, Green Bay. There, he accumulated nine interceptions and 32 pass breakups over 72 games and 69 starts.

Although he has been considered a replacement for Jenkins on the backend, next to safety Andre Cisco, Savage has been floated as a candidate to play nickel corner by Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson.

Despite obtaining those veterans, the Jaguars were widely projected to target another outside cornerback early in the 2024 NFL draft, leaving some analysts surprised when they waited until the end of Day 2 to address their secondary whatsoever.

Notably, Campbell is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2024, while Darby turned 30 years old in January.

They double-dipped at the position, though, taking nickel corner Jarrian Jones late in the third round and then picking outside corner Deantre Prince in the fifth round.

Both were five-year college contributors who participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl all-star game before the draft.

“I think what both Jarrian and Prince probably share as players is confidence in terms of their coverage ability, but also knowing how to use their athletic ability,” Shrine Bowl director of football operations and player personnel, Eric Galko, described Jones and Prince in an interview with Jaguars Wire.

“Some guys are athletic and don’t know how to use it, and they’re just guessing and trying to use their athleticism and kind of recover a lot, not necessarily maximizing it. I think both these guys know where they can get to on the field in coverage.”

The Jaguars have been similarly complimentary of the rookies and believe each can become an impact player in the secondary.

Still, Jacksonville thought it had room to improve. Accordingly, the club signed another pair of veteran defensive backs on Thursday, safety and former first-round pick Terrell Edmunds and cornerback Tre Flowers.

Flowers, in particular, provides a sense of familiarity as the most recent season of his six-year career was under the guidance of current Jacksonville defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen, who occupied the same role for Atlanta in 2023.

He appeared in 17 games with three starts last year, and has compiled four interceptions, 22 pass breakups and five forced fumbles over 90 games since 2018.

Edmunds could fill the safety role initially expected of Savage in 2023, with 79 starts at the position under his belt over six seasons. He’s recorded six interceptions, 28 pass breakups, 7.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss in that span.

Second-year Jaguar Antonio Johnson will vie for a starting safety role, too, after intercepting two passes and defending three as a rookie in 2023.

While it remains to be seen how the batch of new faces will perform as a unit, Jacksonville was wisely aggressive in acquiring defensive backs of varying positional fits, experience levels, and physical and athletic potential this offseason.

The unit added a combined 287 starts via free agency, patching holes in the Jaguars’ previously underwhelming secondary and, as a result, slowing down the pace of the incoming rookies’ development track.

Jones and Prince won’t need to be forced into action at cornerback early in their career — barring injury or if they prove to be equipped for pro ball immediately — with Campbell, Darby, Flowers and perhaps Savage at nickel available to start in 2024.

Jaguars add veteran DBs Terrell Edmunds, Tre Flowers

Jaguars add veteran DBs Terrell Edmunds, Tre Flowers

The Jaguars announced a trio of signings on Thursday afternoon, adding veteran defensive backs Terrell Edmunds and Tre Flowers and linebacker Ty Summers to their 2024 offseason roster.

Summers’ signing was reported Wednesday evening by Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette.

Jacksonville waived linebacker Dequan Jackson and waived/injured undrafted rookie wide receiver Wayne Ruby Jr. in corresponding transactions. The latter move was foreshadowed Wednesday by Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union.

Edmunds, a former first-round safety selection by Pittsburgh in 2018. He spent five seasons with the Steelers, and half of the 2024 campaign with Philadelphia before being traded to Tennessee.

Over 95 appearances and 79 starts, Edmunds has compiled 458 tackles including 17 for loss, 7.5 sacks, six interceptions, 28 defended passes and one forced fumble.

A college safety and 2018 fifth-round pick by Seattle, Flowers transitioned to cornerback with the Seahawks and occupied a starting role for over two seasons before a 2020 hamstring injury ruled him out of the rest of the season.

Flowers was waived by Seattle the following year and was claimed by Cincinnati around midseason.

He spent a year and a half with the Bengals in a depth role before signing with Atlanta and starting three games for the Falcons in 2023, under now-Jacksonville defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen.

Flowers has compiled 283 tackles including four for loss, two sacks, four interceptions, 22 passes defended and five forced fumbles over 90 games and 44 starts.

Ex-Falcons CB Tre Flowers signs with Jacksonville Jaguars

Former #Falcons CB Tre Flowers has signed a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars

According to a report from ESPN’s Field Yates, former Falcons cornerback Tre Flowers has signed a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Flowers, 28, spent the 2023 season in Atlanta, appearing in all 17 games and making three starts.

The Falcons have signed a handful of defensive backs in free agency, including Kevin King, Antonio Hamilton, and Anthony Johnson, so it’s no surprise to see Flowers sign elsewhere.

After losing Jeff Okudah in free agency, many thought the team would select a cornerback early in the 2024 NFL draft. However, the Falcons didn’t add a single defensive back in their eight-player draft class.

Look for second-year cornerback Clark Phillips III to play a bigger role and potentially start opposite A.J. Terrell this season.

Bengals free agent Tre Flowers signs with Falcons

A former Bengals player has found a new home after the team used draft picks on defensive backs.

Former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Tre Flowers has finally found a home in free agency.

In the wake of the draft, Flowers has signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons.

Flowers was a candidate to return to the Bengals before the team used three of its eight picks on defensive backs in the 2023 NFL draft. The Bengals selected DJ Turner in the second round, Jordan Battle in the third and DJ Ivey in the seventh.

A solid tight-end stopper for Lou Anarumo’s defense and a very successful waiver-wire claim by the front office, Flowers will work in the NFC next.

In addition to drafting three defensive backs, the Bengals signed Sidney Jones in free agency, seemingly putting an end to the depth concerns.

Falcons sign veteran CB Tre Flowers to one-year deal

The #Falcons have signed veteran CB Tre Flowers to a one-year deal

The Atlanta Falcons have added another piece to their secondary, signing veteran cornerback Tre Flowers to a one-year deal on Monday. The 27-year-old spent the last season and a half with the Cincinnati Bengals after playing the first three and a half years of his career for the Seattle Seahawks.

Flowers joins former teammate Jessie Bates III in Atlanta’s new-look secondary. The Falcons recently traded for Jeff Okudah, who should compete with Flowers for the No. 2 cornerback spot alongside A.J. Terrell.

Flowers was originally drafted in the fifth round by Seattle in 2018. For his career, Flowers has 224 tackles, 14 passes defended and four interceptions.

The former Oklahoma State standout recorded a Pro Football Focus grade of 58.6 last season, but his tackling grade was significantly better at 86.1.

Bengals free agent CB Tre Flowers visits Panthers

Is another Bengals free agent heading to the Panthers?

Might another Cincinnati Bengals free agent head to the Carolina Panthers?

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, cornerback Tre Flowers had a free-agent visit with the Panthers this week.

Flowers was an instant-impact waiver claim by the Bengals in 2021 and re-upped with the team in 2022, serving as a key tight-end stopper in Lou Anarumo’s defense.

He’s still just 27 years old and very valuable in that role, so it was fair to expect the team would want him back. Going this long and meeting with another team, though, might hint at a playing time situation such as the one that wound up with running back Samaje Perine leaving the team.

The Bengals signed Sidney Jones in free agency and haven’t brought back Eli Apple, so the depth concerns linger before the draft. Both Vonn Bell and Hayden Hurst already signed with the Panthers this offseason.

Panthers host former Seahawks, Bengals CB Tre Flowers for free-agent visit

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the Panthers have hosted former Seahawks and Bengals CB Tre Flowers on a free-agent visit.

The Carolina Panthers have addressed quite a few of their needs through free agency this offseason. But they’re still a tad thin at the cornerback position.

So, with that likely in mind, they have reportedly hosted 27-year-old free agent Tre Flowers for a visit. ESPN NFL insider Field Yates was first with the news late Tuesday afternoon.

Flowers was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 draft by the Seattle Seahawks, who still had current Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer in their front office at the time. The Oklahoma State University product played nearly four seasons in Seattle—recording 40 starts, 196 combined tackles, three interceptions, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 2.0 sacks over 47 outings.

He was then waived in the middle of the 2021 campaign and later claimed by the Cincinnati Bengals for the remaining five games of the season. Flowers stuck on in Cincinnati through 2022, having played a total of 26 games for the Bengals.

Bengals free agent CB Tre Flowers visits with Falcons

Another Bengals free agent to watch.

Eli Apple gets the spotlight for the Cincinnati Bengals as the team’s big free agent at cornerback this offseason.

But not far behind is Tre Flowers.

According to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson, Flowers visited the Atlanta Falcons as he makes the free agency rounds.

Since joining the team in 2021 off waivers, Flowers has served as a situational tight-end stopper for Lou Anarumo’s defense and has been quite successful.

The Bengals might roll Tycen Anderson or a rookie into this type of role if Flowers doesn’t end up re-signing, but it’s safe to assume they would like him back at the right price.

Even if the Bengals managed to retain Flowers and Apple, it wouldn’t prevent the team from taking a cornerback in the first round to reinforce the long-term outlook.
