Bengals CB Tre Flowers shares respect for Seahawks: ‘Everything just worked out’

That’s worked out well for Flowers and his new team.

Tre Flowers had his moments but never truly settled in as a reliable starter for the Seattle Seahawks secondary. After a couple of rough games to start the 2021 season, the team finally punted on trying to force a fit and waived him. That’s worked out well for Flowers and his new team.

The Cincinnati Bengals picked him up off waivers soon after and he has made some clutch plays for them during their improbable playoff run to the Super Bowl. Speaking with the media yesterday, Flowers shared nothing but respect for his former team and seemed thankful for the opportunity.

Bengals anticipate more practice reps for CBs Tre Flowers, Vernon Hargreaves

The Bengals see new names having a bigger impact soon.

The Cincinnati Bengals have been busy adding to the cornerback room in recent weeks on the waiver wire.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor made it clear over the bye that he’s thrilled with the additions of Tre Flowers and Vernon Hargreaves too because of the importance depth at that position plays in December and January.

As if to confirm that, on the Monday right after the bye, Taylor told reporters he expects Flowers and Hargreaves to see an uptick in practice reps this week as they seriously compete for playing time, per CLNS Media’s Mike Petraglia.

That means there’s some possible heat on Eli Apple, who continues to start in place of Trae Waynes and so far has a 46.4 PFF grade with serious ups and downs.

If not that, reps behind Apple for the likes of Darius Phillips remain under the microscope. Flowers, by the way, already played a huge role in one game in a hybrid spot.

Keep in mind Waynes might be back within the next few weeks as well, though the fickle nature of his continual hamstring injuries is nearly impossible to project.

Bengals already got big performance from waiver wire claim Tre Flowers

Tre Flowers has already made a big impact for the Bengals.

[mm-video type=video id=01fk180eypeyq2fw7jbg playlist_id=01eqbw0bft20de1r4d player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fk180eypeyq2fw7jbg/01fk180eypeyq2fw7jbg-42336ce12defd7b7ebc558b112017718.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t need long to get a big showing from new cornerback Tre Flowers.

Cincinnati claimed the former Seattle Seahawks fifth-round draft pick on waivers back on October 14. Two days later, comments from Bengals coaches made it pretty clear they might have big plans for him.

Turns out they did.

Roughly a week after those comments, Bengals coaches turned Flowers loose in that 41-17 beatdown of the Baltimore Ravens, making him responsible for tight end Mark Andrews, as NFL Matchup’s Greg Cosell explained:

“In their man concepts out of dime, they disguised the matchups at times, but one constant was corner Tre Flowers matched on Baltimore tight end Mark Andrews. That was the game plan approach. On 3rd-and-15 in the first quarter, the Bengals played Cover 3 behind a three man rush with Flowers man-to-man on Andrews. Jackson unnecessarily climbed the pocket and created his own pressure that he could not escape from, resulting in a sack by defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. Matching up Flowers on Andrews was a strong concept and part of the reason he was limited to just three catches for 48 yards, and none on 3rd down when Flowers was matched on him.”

That was pretty much what we had presumed Flowers would do right away by residing in that same role Ricardo Allen occupies as a third safety who comes on to play the matchup game in certain scenarios.

Flowers, like Allen, can be an underrated matchup asset and also enable coordinator Lou Anarumo to dial up exotic blitzes, sending safeties like Vonn Bell in an effort to provide pressure.

While Flowers hasn’t played a ton of snaps, the team’s ability to identify how he could help and get a quick turnaround on that is impressive.

Bengals may have big plans for new CB Tre Flowers

The Bengals are excited about their newest acquisition at the cornerback position.

The newest addition to the Cincinnati Bengals is already starting to build excitement for the team and fans as the Bengals now begin to actually try and make a playoff push after a 3-2 start.

The Bengals claimed former Seattle Seahawks CB Tre Flowers off waivers Thursday, a very fortunate break for the Bengals, as they entered the week sitting behind more than half of the league in the waiver order. So they caught a huge break finding out they actually claimed the former Seahawk.

The Bengals needed some help at the cornerback position after placing Trae Waynes on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Bringing in Flowers gives the Bengals another veteran presence to work alongside Chidobe Awuzie. And the Bengals are already raving about their newest addition, as Bengals director of pro scouting Steven Radicevic told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

“We liked him as a safety when he was coming out. He can probably play multiple roles on defense. He’s a tall, long corner that has played in a lot of big games and won a lot of big games in Seattle. Given the situation we’re in with Trae getting hurt, we obviously think it’s a move that helps us.”

Flowers was drafted in the fifth round in 2018 out of Oklahoma State and converted from safety to cornerback. He went on to start 40 games for the Seahawks, including three this season.

Bengals acquire former Seahawks CB Tre Flowers off waivers

It didn’t take long for Flowers to find a new home in the NFL.

The Seahawks benched cornerback Tre Flowers a couple of weeks ago and cut him yesterday, giving him a chance to start over outside Seattle.

It didn’t take long for Flowers to find a new home in the NFL. The Bengals say they have acquired him off waivers.

Flowers was a fifth-round pick in the 2018 draft. He showed promise at times over the last three and a half seasons, but seemed out of place in more ways than one. It’s easy to envision Flowers finding success in a different system more suited for his talents. Hopefully that’s the case in Cincinnati.

The Bengals made a big move on the waiver wire.

The Cincinnati Bengals added to the cornerback room on Thursday ahead of a Week 6 game against the Detroit Lions by claiming Tre Flowers on waivers.

Flowers, a fifth-round pick by Seattle in 2018, was cut by the Seahawks after he requested his release. According to PFF, he had let up 14 catches on 16 targets for a 52.9 grade.

Cincinnati makes the move while trying to cobble together better depth now that Trae Wayes is on injured reserve again and Darius Phillips has been dealing with an injury.

While Flowers has 40 starts over four seasons, this is an end-of-roster move as the team looks for a fourth or fifth corner behind the likes of Phillips and Eli Apple.

Seahawks releasing CB Tre Flowers, working out QB Blake Bortles

On that front, the Seahawks are working out Blake Bortles, per Field Yates at ESPN.

The Seahawks are releasing cornerback Tre Flowers, according to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network. Flowers was a fifth-round pick by the team in the 2018 draft. He appeared in 47 games for Seattle and earned 40 starts but never really settled in despite showing some improvement in his second season. This year, Flowers was torched no matter who he defended, allowing a 132.0 passer rating in coverage. Sidney Jones took his place on the field a couple weeks ago.

This move could mean that rookie corner Tre Brown is finally ready to make his debut. He missed the first several weeks of the season on injured reserve with a knee issue but recently returned to practice.

Cornerback is obviously this team’s most urgent defensive need, but there are other concerns. Quarterback depth should be at the top of the list in the wake of Russell Wilson’s finger injury and subsequent surgery. Geno Smith is the next man up but there’s nobody behind him on the depth chart accept practice squad QB Jake Luton.

On that front, the Seahawks are working out Blake Bortles, per Field Yates at ESPN.

Bortles was the No. 3 overall pick in the draft by the Jaguars back in 2014 but never came close to living up to it. His peak came in 2017 when he played in the AFC Championship against the Patriots. It was Jacksonville’s defense that got him there, though. For his career Bortles has a 24-49 record, a 59.3% completion rate and 103 touchdown passes to go with 75 interceptions.

Pete Carroll says Seahawks cornerback situation is a ‘work in progress’

After starting Sidney Jones Week 4, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says Seattle’s cornerback situation continues to be a “work in progress.”

The Seattle Seahawks made a change at cornerback Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers, with coach Pete Carroll opting to start former Husky Sidney Jones in place of Tre Flowers.

“I just thought it was time,” Carroll said after the win . . . “You’ve got to know that he knows what’s going on across the board, and I mean look what happened. We made a big error today. So, we try to avoid that by buying time. We grabbed him so that he would play. We wanted to see what he could do and took a shot at it. I liked the thought of using him back on the other side where he played well last year. ”

But the adjustments at the cornerback spot might not be over just yet. Players like Bless Austin and Tre Brown could very well eventually get a look as well.

“There’ll be a lot more that you guys will write about this stuff over time,” Carroll continued.  “It’s a work in progress and it takes time to get this stuff right, and hopefully it’s not too late.”

Sidney Jones set to replace Tre Flowers at right cornerback for Seahawks

It might be too little too late, but it appears the Seattle Seahawks are ready to try something different at cornerback.

It might be too little too late, but it appears the Seattle Seahawks are ready to try something different at cornerback.

According to Adam Jude at the Seattle Times, Sidney Jones is set to take over at the right cornerback spot today against the 49ers, bumping Tre Flowers down to the bench.

Jones has had an up-and-down kind of NFL career since he was a star at Washington. He would have to be pretty awful in order to come out worse than Flowers had been from Weeks 1-3, though.

As to who plays the left side, D.J. Reed has been starting there so far this season. If coach Pete Carroll decides to make a change there as well we might see Bless Austin take his spot.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll considering cornerback changes vs. 49ers

According to a report by Jeremy Fowler at ESPN, coach Pete Carroll is mulling a different rotation against the San Francisco 49ers

Cornerback has been a major problem for the Seattle Seahawks defense during the 2021 season. D.J. Reed is playing out of position on the left side, Tre Flowers has gotten beat by every receiver he’s covered so far and both have pointed to confusion and questions about the scheme. We might see a change, though.

According to a report by Jeremy Fowler at ESPN, coach Pete Carroll is mulling a different rotation today against the San Francisco 49ers. That could mean expanded roles for two new cornerback that the team acquired just before the regular season began: Sidney Jones and Bless Austin.

Through three games, Jones and Austin have only seen the field on special teams. There’s a risk that comes with playing defenders who don’t have live experience with the system, but it’s hard to imagine that those two could perform any worse than Flowers and Reed have to date.
