Seahawks have had pick-6s vs. Lions in Detroit for two straight years

For the third straight year, the Seattle Seahawks will be traveling to the Motor City to play the Detroit Lions. The Seahawks have won the two previous meetings, both of which were shootouts.

In 2022, the Seahawks outlasted the Lions and prevailed with a 48-45 victory. Interestingly enough, this was a Scorigami — a final score that had never happened before in NFL history. The Seahawks from 2010-2018 were masters of this unique art form.

Last year, Seattle upset the Lions 37-31 in overtime. The Seahawks were heavy underdogs, having been thrashed by the Los Angeles Rams the week before, and were without their starting tackles.

A compelling similarity of these games is the fact the Seahawks scored on a pick-six in both meetings. In 2022, Riq Woolen blasted onto the scene as a rookie by snagging Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s first pass of the second half and taking it back 40 yards for a score.

Last year, Tre Brown did the exact same thing, intercepting Goff and returning it for a 40-yard touchdown.

Oddly enough, the Seahawks had the same point total at the time of each touchdown. Woolen made it a 31-15 game, and Brown turned it into a 31-21 lead for Seattle.

The Seahawks are now officially in the post-Pete Carroll era, led by general manager John Schneider and head coach Mike Macdonald. While that will take some time getting used to the team already has made significant progress in reshaping the roster to fit the new regime. Next year that process will accelerate, as we will see even greater roster turnover. To get a better idea of what the team’s needs may be in next year’s draft, let’s take a look at who may no longer be on the roster at that time. The Seattle Seahawks benefitted from it earlier this season in their Week 2 win over Detroit, which was marred by horrific officiating from start to finish – much of it going against the Lions. Last night Detroit got the shaft yet again, this time from Brad Allen’s crew.

In case you missed it, it looked like the Lions had pulled off an upset over the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the first visiting team to win in Dallas this year. However, Taylor Decker’s touchdown was wiped out after officials claimed that Decker did not report as an eligible receiver.

The Lions got two more tries at their two-point conversion but couldn’t close the deal. We have since learned that Decker most definitely did report – but it appears that Allen simply ignored him and walked away while Decker was trying to inform him.

Even worse, Lions head coach Dan Campbell says he explained the entire play to officials before the game even started.

It’s an awful way for the Lions to lose such a critical game for playoff positioning. A lot of players are voicing their displeasure with the officiating, including current and former Seahawks. Here’s cornerback Tre Brown calling for refs to have to give press conferences after games.

And here’s Bruce Irvin (currently with the Lions) taking note of Detroit’s 0-6 record and lopsided penalty yardage in games that Brad Allen calls.

Unfortunately this is just the latest footnote in a long, sad history of Detroit suffering a disproportionate amount from NFL officials failing to do their jobs well.

If it’s not going to be the Seahawks, there’s no other team we’d rather see hoisting the Lombardi than the Lions.

As is the running theme this season, injuries have been a consistent concern for the Seattle Seahawks. Wednesday practice injury reports have been particularly brutal, and yesterday’s was no exception. A total of eight players did not participate at all.

Fortunately, they tend to get better as the week progresses, and this was the case for Thursday’s practice. On Thursday, the did not participate list was cut in half, and a grand total of nine players were full participants.

On Wednesday, eight players did not practice, including the likes of Bobby Wagner, Tyler Lockett, and of course linebacker Uchenna Nwosu.

The Seahawks have lined up in some version of zone on 84% of their snaps

The Seahawks secondary is about as talented as any in the NFL this year. With Riq Woolen, Devon Witherspoon and Tre Brown at cornerback you’d figure that they would be playiung a lot of man defense. The opposite is the case, though. In fact, according to this chart no team in the league is playing more zone defense than Seattle this year.

The Seahawks have lined up in some version of zone on 84% of their snaps. Check it out:

While it doesn’t really mesh with their personnel, this doesn’t come as a surprise. Head coach Pete Carroll has always preferred a heavy zone scheme no matter who his defensive coordinator is or who’s playing on the back end. Maybe some day that will change, but it doesn’t seem likely after 13 years of this.
