Warriors’ Steve Kerr offers assessment of Trayce Jackson-Davis’ recent play

Steve Kerr is pleased with how the rookie has played down the stretch as the team prepares him for the postseason.

In an effort to prepare Trayce Jackson-Davis for the postseason, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has worked to increase his workload down the stretch.

He believes the rookie has impressed in that span.

Jackson-Davis played sporadically to start the season but eventually earned a place in the rotation. The team has been pleased with his scoring down low on offense and his ability to rebound and protect the paint on the other end of the floor.

The 57th pick averaged 12.8 minutes per game through games played in February but is up to 23.8 minutes in 13 games in March. He is averaging 10.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.7 blocks on 74.7% shooting from the field over that span.

Kerr is happy to see his production of late.

He has been great. Trayce has gotten even better with the extended minutes. I think he has extended his capability to play longer stretches at an effective rate. Every night in this league, as a young player, is so important because you’re learning about trends, personnel (and) game-planning. He is really a smart, young guy and he picks things up quickly. You only have to tell him something once. It has been really fun to watch Trayce grow.

Jackson-Davis logged a season-high 33 minutes on Wednesday in a 101-93 win over the Orlando Magic. He produced eight points, 14 rebounds, three assists and one block to help the Warriors, who were without Jonathan Kuminga (knee) and Draymond Green (ejection).

The 24-year-old scored in double figures in six straight games in March and had at least two blocks in five consecutive games, the longest such streak by a Warriors rookie since Ekpe Udoh in March 2011. He leads the team in blocks this season (59).

Jackson-Davis has earned praise from the team throughout the season, given his ability to play mistake-free and affect games on both ends of the court. He appears ready to contribute at a high level to the Warriors’ run toward the playoffs.

Watch Trace Jackson-Davis’ poster dunk over Victor Wembanyama

Golden State Warriors big man Trayce Jackson-Davis threw down a huge slam over San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.

Victor Wembanyama has been a revelation on the defensive end this season. Though the San Antonio Spurs haven’t been the best team defensively, his physical skillset is insane, and he currently leads the league in blocks as a rookie. Once he fully develops, he’ll be a perennial candidate for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

However, with great defensive talent comes the willingness to challenge every shot. All great shot-blockers get posterized from time to time. It just comes with the territory. And on Monday night, in the Spurs’ loss to the Golden State Warriors, Wembanyama got dunked on by fellow rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Jackson-Davis drove the lane on Wembanyama, rose up, and threw down a monstrous and-one dunk over the 20-year-old Frenchman.

The entire Warriors bench went berserk after the play.

Jackson-Davis had an impressive showing in the Warriors win. He put up 13 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists off the bench while shooting 6-of-7 from the field.

In a battle between rookies, Trayce Jackson-Davis got the last laugh against Victory Wembanyama on Monday night when the Golden State Warriors met the San Antonio Spurs.

In the fourth quarter, Jackson-Davis put an exclamation point on the Warriors’ much-needed 112-102 win over the Spurs with a must-see dunk over the 2023 No. 1 overall pick. Jackson-Davis drove the lane and exploded for a one-handed jam. While Wembanyama attempted a block, Jackson-Davis was still able to throw down the dunk.

Steve Kerr aims to get Trayce Jackson-Davis playoff ready

The Golden State Warriors head coach wants to get Trayce Jackson-Davis some additional reps to get him ready for the playoffs.

Trayce Jackson-Davis has earned a spot within Steve Kerr‘s playoff rotation. The rookie big man produced an impressive performance during the Golden State Warriors‘ win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday (March 6). He ended the game with four blocks and 15 points.

Speaking to the media after the game, Kerr noted that he’ll be giving Jackson-Davis some additional minutes in the coming weeks. Kerr is aiming to get his young center ready for the postseason by putting him on the floor with the team’s second unit in a more consistent role.

“We’re gonna need Loon in the playoffs,” Kerr said. “There’s gonna be matchup’s where we need him. I know I can trust him. But, we’re gonna need to get Trayce more minutes to get him ready for the playoffs. He needs reps. He needs more time. You can see what he did tonight. He has an ability to finish and to block shots, that gives us a different look. So, we’ve decided to ramp up his minutes and slide Moses into a bigger role as well.”

Jackson-Davis has participated in 48 games this season. He’s averaging 6.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game on 69.7% shooting from the field. However, postseason basketball is a totally different style of play. The more reps the rookie can get with his teammates, so that he can learn the system and continue developing and understanding, the better.

Golden State will be back in action on Thursday (March. 7) when they face the Chicago Bulls in what will be a back-to-back for both teams. We will likely see Jackson-Davis continue in his role off the bench, as Kerr looks to build some continuity with his second-unit rotation.

Trayce Jackson-Davis used Blake Griffin footage to prepare for Giannis

The Golden State Warriors rookie studied game tape of Blake Griffin to prepare for his matchup against Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Trayce Jackson-Davis had an immense game for the Golden State Warriors as they defeated the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. The rookie big man ended the night with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks and a steal. That level of production earned Jackson-Davis significant praise from his teammates and coaching staff after the game.

During his media availability, Jackson-Davis revealed he prepared for the matchup against Giannis Antetokounmpo by watching footage of Blake Griffin. He noted how the veteran big man has fared well against Giannis in the past, so he tried to learn from the available footage.

“I’ve never faced anyone like him before,” Jackson-Davis said. “Having length like that. As fast as he is. Explosive. The person that I’ve watched guard him in the past, who has done a pretty successful job, is Blake Griffin. Just sitting back and kind of allowing him to come to you. And then watching that spin move that he likes to do. … I’ve watched it a few times.”

Davis recorded multiple blocks on Giannis during the game. He also did a solid job of containing the former MVP when matched up against him. Jackson-Davis has enjoyed a strong rookie season with the Warriors. However, his performance against the Bucks was certainly one of his better outings.

Jackson-Davis and the Warriors will turn their attention to the Chicago Bulls as they prepare to face another Eastern Conference team in what will be the second night of a back-to-back for both rosters.

Warriors’ Steve Kerr wants to ramp up Trayce Jackson-Davis’ minutes for playoffs

Trayce Jackson-Davis has played a key role for the Warriors and appears to have earned himself extended minutes over their last 21 games.

Trayce Jackson-Davis has played a key role, at times, with the Golden State Warriors and the rookie appears to have earned himself extended minutes down the last stretch of the season.

Jackson-Davis has played sporadically with the Warriors, though has logged at least 10 minutes in seven out of his last eight games after the All-Star break. He has stepped into the second unit and provided a lift with his scoring and defense.

The 57th pick produced 15 points, six rebounds and four blocks on Wednesday in a 125-90 win over Milwaukee. He had an impressive stretch in the third quarter after blocking Giannis Antetokounmpo twice on one possession and soaring for an alley-oop on the other end.

That ability, coach Steve Kerr said, is what they need in the playoffs.

We have to get Trayce more minutes to get him ready for the playoffs because he needs reps and more time. You can see what he did tonight. He has an ability to finish and block shots that gives us a different look. We decided to ramp up his minutes and slide Moses (Moody) into a bigger role, as well.

His effort came at a time of need, Draymond Green said: “He saved me because I was awful in the third quarter: Missing layups, turning the ball over. Steve got me out of there and got Trayce in. He was blocking shots, rebounding, dunking the ball and (had) good finishes. He just brought the life back to us. … Trayce came in and — saved me for sure because I was awful — saved the day for us and built the lead back up.”

Jackson-Davis is averaging 8.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks on 73.8% shooting from the field since returning from the break. He has scored in double figures twice in that span and has helped the Warriors win six out of their last eight games.

The 24-year-old leads the Warriors with 43 blocks and ranks second among rookies in field-goal percentage (69.7), fifth in blocks and ninth in rebounds (4.1) this season. He has also registered four double-doubles, including three off the bench.

Jackson-Davis has earned praise from the team throughout the season, given his ability to play mistake-free and affect games on both ends of the court. He is looking to continue that over the Warriors’ last 21 games to be as prepared as possible for the postseason.

“Obviously, the playoffs are a different beast,” Jackson-Davis said. “We’ve got a lot of vets on this team, so me and (Brandin Podziemski) are going to rely on them a lot. But coming in and getting this game experience against great teams and being able to go out and perform as hard as you can is the biggest thing for me, so I’m going to continue to play hard.”

Watch: Trayce Jackson-Davis slams lob after blocking Giannis Antetokounmpo in wild sequence vs. Bucks

The rookie made his presence felt on both sides of the court against the Bucks.

With the Milwaukee Bucks cutting into the Golden State Warriors‘ lead in the second half, Steve Kerr turned to his bench for a spark. Rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis quickly made his presence felt on both ends of the court.

In a wild sequence that started with a pair of Jackson-Davis blocks against two-time Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo, the rookie center charged back down the court to get involved offensively.

Following Jackson-Davis’ two impact blocks, Steph Curry found him at the rim for a lob dunk. The two-handed dunk from Jackson-Davis sent the San Francisco Chase Center crowd into a frenzy.

How Warriors rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis unlocked a surprising new side of Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson is showing off his passing skills and it might help save his NBA career.

Golden State Warriors rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis and veteran Klay Thompson make for a fascinating pairing.

Now coming off the bench for the first time since his rookie campaign in 2011, Thompson is spending more minutes with Golden State’s second unit. While here, he has created an immediate bond with Jackson-Davis, who was the second-to-last pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Playing alongside Thompson, the former Indiana standout just had one of the best games of his professional career. He had 17 points against the Lakers on Feb. 22, which was just two points shy of his personal best in the NBA.

While he has spent most of his career known as a sharpshooter, it’s his passing that was on display against Los Angeles.

Thompson isn’t known for his playmaking but recorded three assists to Jackson-Davis in just four and a half minutes, per Anthony Slater. Here is more (via The Athletic):

“He isn’t pass-first and the Warriors have never asked him to be. But his gravity does generate openings for his teammates and, over the years, he’s found some synergy with centers who can finish above the rim.”

Finishing above the rim is not a problem for Jackson-Davis. Among all collegiate prospects drafted last season, he finished with the most dunks (74) by a significant margin.

Jackson-Davis knows that he is a natural fit next to Thompson, stating:

“I think Klay likes passing me the ball. Before the game, he actually came up to me. He said come get me on pindowns [and] ball screens in transition. You’re either going to get a dunk or I’m going to get a shot.”

To use some numbers: Thompson has now recorded 18 assists to Jackson-Davis in the 242 minutes they have shared the floor this season. That average is 2.7 assists to just Jackson-Davis per 36 minutes. For comparison, his NBA career average to all his teammates combined is 2.6 assists per 36.

Thompson now has more assists to the rookie than to any other player on the roster except for Kevon Looney (who he has assisted just once more at 19 times). Thompson has shared the court with eight players for more minutes than he has with Jackson-Davis.

According to Curry, who has now spent more than a decade as Thompson’s teammate, the veteran “had fun” with his playmaking prowess.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr provided his thoughts as well (via NBC Sports Bay Area):

“Trayce is such a good finisher … When Klay comes off inbounds, people are scared. They’re scared. They’re going to put two on the ball. He just knows that Trayce, after he sets a screen, if he slips and gets to the rim, he knows Trayce is going to finish. They’ve just had a great connection all year on that action.”

Digging deeper, 30.5 percent of Thompson’s passes to Jackson-Davis have led directly to an assist. That rate is quite a bit higher from Thompson to any other teammate.

The rookie big is now shooting an absurd 81.8 percent at the rim when he shares the floor with Thompson, per PBPStats. For comparison, he is 68.4 percent at the rim when the veteran is not on the court. Thompson’s track record as a shooter plays a large reason why.

With the gravity and spacing that Thompson provides, Jackson-Davis has gotten some wide-open looks when cutting to the basket. Together, it is also helping to unlock some offensive potential from Golden State’s bench.

They’ll need productivity from the non-Curry lineups if this team hopes to make any noise in the postseason and the pairing of Thompson and Jackson-Davis might provide exactly that.

In the process, his playmaking could also extend Thompson’s NBA career.
