Why Will Muschamp took reduced role on Georgia’s staff

Kirby Smart details Will Muschamp’s reasoning behind move to defensive analyst…

The Georgia Bulldogs’ sideline will look much differently this fall after multiple changes to the coaching staff this offseason.

The biggest difference will be on the defensive side of the ball. Formerly co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, Will Muschamp has moved to defensive analyst, and Travaris Robinson has taken Muschamp’s role after coming over from Alabama.

We received some clarity on Muschamp’s move from head coach Kirby Smart last week as the Bulldogs continue spring practice.

“He spent a lot of time around young men in this profession, and he’s developed a lot of really good football players. He’s shaped a lot of boys into men. He’s got a lot of great relationships from the places he’s coached,” Smart said. “He spent a lot of time developing those kids, and he wants to be able to see his son. He wants to be able to watch his son develop and play. He got to see that firsthand with Jackson here who did a tremendous job for us. Every day coach Muschamp got to go on the practice field and be with his son.

Mushamp’s son, Jackson Muschamp, is set to graduate from UGA this spring. The walk-on quarterback had a poetic ending to his career in 2023, seeing his first collegiate action in Georgia’s Orange Bowl win versus Florida State.

Smart acknowledged that Will muschamp’s diminished role, in part, is due to his desire to be more involved with his younger son, Whit Muschamp, who is preparing for his freshman season at Vanderbilt.

“I can only imagine what that felt like for him and the satisfaction of seeing his son each day. Now he’s got Whit, who’s got an opportunity to go to Vanderbilt and play. He wants to be a factor in his life and be with him. That was a really easy transition. I thought he handled it very well. He communicated very well with me.”

The combination of Smart, Muschamp and co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann has one of the best, if not the best, defensive staffs in the sport. Smart knew he needed a hard hitter to take Muschamp’s place, and he found that in Robinson.

Robinson coached with Muschamp at Florida and South Carolina, bringing a similar mindset to Athens. He is also considered one of the best recruiters in college football.

“Our ability to hire T-Rob was tremendous. He’s got tons of value in our SEC footprint. Recruiting value, football knowledge, leader of men. Anywhere he’s coached, his players really, really trust him and enjoy him,” Smart said. “He’s been nothing but an asset for us in terms of knowledge but also in terms of relationships. We’ll get a great benefit from T-Rob coming, and we’ll get a huge benefit from coach Muschamp remaining part of our program to help us.”

Georgia will continue spring practice leading up to the annual G-Day scrimmage game on Saturday, April 13. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET, televised on SEC Network+.

Georgia co-defensive coordinator named as one of CFB’s best hires

Georgia’s hiring of co-defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson has been named as one of college football’s best hires this offseason

247Sports rates Georgia football’s hiring of co-defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson as the second-best coordinator hire this offseason (so far). Robinson is ranked only behind Ohio State hiring UCLA‘s head coach Chip Kelly to be the Buckeye’s offensive coordinator.

Head coach Kirby Smart and Georgia hired Alabama cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson to serve as the safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator at Georgia. The Bulldogs hired Robinson shortly following Nick Saban’s retirement at Alabama.

Last season, Robinson helped Alabama make the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide, who allowed an average of 19.0 points per game, finished the 2023 season with the nation’s No. 16 (tied) scoring defense.

Georgia hired Travaris Robinson to take over Will Muschamp’s role. Muschamp, who is looking to spend more time with his family, remains as a defensive analyst for the Georgia staff. Muschamp and Robinson have worked together in the past at South Carolina and at Florida, so the transition should be seamless for the Georgia coaching staff.

Speaking of Georgia’s coaching staff, the Bulldogs lost wide receiver coach Bryan McClendon to NFL. Kirby Smart and Georgia are looking for a replacement for McClendon. Georgia’s potential candidates include Joe Cox, Hines Ward, and Terrence Edwards.

Georgia football’s Will Muschamp takes significant pay cut

Georgia’s Will Muschamp took a significant pay cut after the Bulldogs added former Alabama cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson to the staff

The Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Kirby Smart added former Alabama Crimson Tide cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson following Nick Saban’s retirement. Robinson will serve as the safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator at Georgia.

Robinson is slated to make $1.3 million in 2024. Robinson will work with Georgia co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann. Georgia should have a strong defense this fall. The Bulldogs return several key defensive linemen from last season.

Robinson takes over Will Muschamp’s previous role. Muschamp, who is looking to spend more time with his family, will be a defensive analyst for the Georgia staff. As an analyst, Will Muschamp is taking a steep pay cut. He will make $50,000 in 2024 after making $855,000 last season. Muschamp previously coached with Robinson during his time at South Carolina.

Kirby Smart has put together another elite coaching staff for the 2024 season. Georgia has a great deal of continuity from the 2023 coaching staff. The only key coach to leave Georgia this offseason is Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, who was the defensive backs coach at Georgia.

5 potential candidates to become Alabama’s next cornerbacks coach

With defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson leaving for Georgia, Alabama will now have to hire a new cornerbacks coach. Roll Tide Wire takes a look at five potential candidates to become Alabama’s next cornerbacks coach.

In what came as a surprise to most, Alabama defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson has left the Crimson Tide and accepted a coaching gig at Georgia. He will be the Bulldogs’ co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

Robinson spent the last two seasons coaching for the Crimson Tide. Now, Alabama will be forced to find someone to replace Robinson. During his time at Alabama, Robinson was known predominantly for being an elite recruiter and helping foster close relationships with his players.

With that being the case, Alabama will have to find someone who can work similarly.

Roll Tide Wire lists five potential candidates to become Alabama’s next cornerbacks coach.

Former Auburn safety Travaris Robinson joins Georgia’s coaching staff

The former Tiger safety joins Kirby Smart’s staff at Georgia and receives a promotion in the process.

Auburn officially announced the hiring of Charles Kelly on Friday, giving him the title of “co-defensive coordinator.”

It is uncertain who Kelly will share coordinator duties with after [autotag]Ron Robert[/autotag]’s departure. Several Auburn fans hoped that head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] would bring home former Tiger free safety [autotag]Travaris Robinson[/autotag], who spent the last two seasons as cornerbacks coach on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama.

However, Freeze’s search will continue as it was announced Saturday that Robinson is heading to Athens to serve as co-defensive coordinator for Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs. He joins Georgia‘s staff after it was announced that former co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is taking a step back to an analyst role. Robinson will reunite with Muschamp at Georgia after serving on his staffs at Florida and South Carolina.

Freeze has several positions to fill this offseason. The addition of Kelly is huge and will provide the Tigers with a recruiting boost. Freeze will now need to hire a running backs coach, offensive coordinator, and another defensive coach to share duties with Kelly.

Alabama’s coaching staff extends offer to Florida commit 2023 DB Sharif Denson

Alabama’s coaching staff extended an offer to 2023 DB and Florida commit Sharif Denson.

August 1 was the first day that division one programs from across the country could extend official offers to high school prospects. As expected, the Alabama coaching staff extended official offers to several prospects committed to other programs.

Interestingly enough, the coaching staff extended an offer to 2023 defensive back Sharif Denson.

Denson is an interesting prospect that Alabama fans should have a close eye on. The Florida native has been committed to Florida for over a month. Recently, he sent out a tweet to another Alabama target at defensive back Cormani McClain. The tweet displayed the two together this past weekend at Florida’s July cookout with the caption “Just a matter of time.”

Alabama already has four defensive back commits in the 2023 recruiting class. The class is headlined by defensive backs Jahlil Hurley, Caleb Downs, Tony Mitchell and Brayson Hubbard.

It will be interesting to see how the Tide decides to pursue Denson. After all, Alabama’s defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson is very familiar with the Florida area after having coached at Miami. Ideally, Alabama will sign five or six defensive backs in the 2023 class. They currently have four commitments at this time. Denson is a player to keep an eye on as his recruitment heats up in the future.

Alabama makes top ten for 2024 cornerback Omilio Agard

Alabama was listed as one of ten schools in the mix to land 2024 cornerback Omilio Agard. Alabama offered Agard in June.

One of Alabama’s top prospects from the 2024 recruiting class is cornerback Omilio Agard. On Monday, the native of Pennsylvania released his top-ten schools on his Twitter page. Alabama is one of the finalists to land him.

Agard’s primary recruiter is defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson. Robinson has done an excellent job thus far in his first year as an Alabama assistant coach. Thus far, he has helped the Crimson Tide land 2023 defensive backs Jahlil Hurley, Tony Mitchell, Caleb Downs, and Brayson Hubbard. His attention is set on the 2023 class, but he is still going after prospects in the 2024 class like Agard.

When asked by 247Sports’ director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong, here is what Agard had to say about Alabama:

“I’ve had a great relationship with Coach T-Rob back when he offered me at Miami and when he got to Alabama and offered me the relationship grew bigger. The dedication, commitment, culture, winning, and development at Bama is like no other!”

It sounds like Agard has a good relationship with Coach Robinson. The coaching staff will continue its pursuit for Agard to join the 2024 recruiting class.

Alabama fends off Georgia and Ohio State to land 2023 5-star safety Caleb Downs

Alabama landed the nation’s top safety in 2023 recruit Caleb Downs. He chose the Crimson Tide over other schools like Ohio State and Georgia.

The 2023 Alabama football recruiting class just got a huge boost on Wednesday afternoon when 2023 safety and Georgia native Caleb Downs announced his commitment to Alabama. The commitment gives the Crimson Tide the No. 5 overall recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ rankings. He is the third player from the state of Georgia that has committed to Alabama.

Downs has a bloodline of football talent. His father, Gary played running back at North Carolina State before being drafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1994 NFL draft. His brother, Josh currently plays wide receiver at North Carolina and was recently named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list. If that wasn’t enough, his uncle is Dre Bly. Bly was selected twice to the Pro Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The youngest of the Downs family, Caleb, is now set to make a name for himself. He will look to do that with the help of two of the best assistant coaches in the country, Charles Kelly and Travaris Robinson. The Georgia native plays with great instincts and is a sideline-to-sideline type of player. 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins compared Downs to Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid. In regards to how Downs plays, here is what Ivins had to say:

“The type of prospect that checks off all the right boxes. Always looks to be one step ahead of others. Athletic enough to get across the field and erase a touchdown, but also physical enough to come downhill and meet a running back in the A or B gap. Smooth and in control while in reverse as he keeps eyes in the backfield. Quick to trigger. Plants his cleats and drives towards the football better than most his age. Takes the right angles while in pursuit and has a few tricks to shed blocks once he meets traffic. Has experience working out of a variety of different coverages and has shown that he can be rather effective as a slot defender in certain situations. Owns a high football IQ, which likely stems from his film study habits as he likes to watch cut-up after cut-up and identify trends. Viewed by his high school coaches as not only a team leader but also a winner and someone that is going to do whatever it takes to elevate the play of those around him.”

Roll Tide Wire breaks down his recruiting profile below.

Alabama hosts 2024 safety Jaylen Heyward for a visit

Alabama set to host talented 2024 safety Jaylen Heyward in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama will be hosting its final camp of the offseason on July 25. It appears that there will be several notable visitors from future recruiting classes. A prospect to keep a close eye on is 2024 safety, Jaylen Heyward.

Heyward has already received over 30 offers. It won’t be easy for the Tide to out-recruit the Florida schools that are interested in him. However, Alabama has seen recent success with recruiting safeties from the Sunshine state. In the past, the Tide’s coaching staff has been able to land players like Shawn Burgess-Becker, Ronnie Harrison and Terrion Arnold.

With Alabama defensive backs coach [autotag]Travaris Robinson[/autotag] having coached at Miami, he is eerily familiar with the state. That could be one of the Tide’s advantages moving forward. As of right now, On3’s RPM is in favor of UCF at 26.4% likelihood.

Predicting Alabama’s full 2023 recruiting class

Today, Roll Tide Wire makes some early predicitions for Alabama’s 2023 recruiting class and how it will shape out.

Every Alabama fan will agree that [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] is arguably one of the best coaches and recruiters of all time. However, the same can be said for the rest of the coaching staff. Defensive coordinator [autotag]Pete Golding[/autotag], wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins, and cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson have all been known for their recruiting prowess over the years.

This past season, the Crimson Tide managed to bring in a stellar recruiting class. There has been just one recruiting class that ranked outside the top ten since Saban’s first year in Tuscaloosa in 2007. That class finished ranked No. 12 according to 247Sports’ recruiting rankings.

Now, the coaching staff is looking to assemble another outstanding recruiting class. With a surplus of talent across the state of Alabama and innumerable talent in other parts of the country, we fully expect this class to be among the best.

Today, Roll Tide Wire will make some early predictions for the Crimson Tide’s 2023 recruiting class. Read along to learn more about the possible future of the Alabama football program.
