Instant analysis of quiet trade deadline for Patriots

The trade deadline came and went without any movement from the Patriots

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo called the trade deadline a “bunch of hype” during an appearance on “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday.

It would seem as if those comments were a strong foreboding of what was to come because the trade deadline came and went without so much as a peep from the Patriots.

There was an early report that multiple teams had called about veteran wide receiver K.J. Osborn, but a move never came to fruition. Osborn and Tyquan Thornton were widely viewed as the players most likely to be traded in New England, and both remain on the roster post-trade deadline.

The only move by the Patriots was shipping linebacker Joshua Uche off to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick last week.

Outside of Uche, the Patriots weren’t buyers or sellers at the deadline. But that also doesn’t mean they were sitting on their thumbs and not looking for an opportunity to make a move.

It takes two to tango in a trade, and the Patriots might have been in a situation where the right players didn’t come available. As Mayo alluded to in his interview, it isn’t like teams are lining up looking to trade away their starting left tackle.

Players like that are hard to come by, and the Patriots will likely have to wait until free agency or the 2025 NFL draft to address that position. That doesn’t mean they can’t sign a current free agent, such as former Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowler D.J. Humphries, to help out in the present.

The Patriots are a rebuilding football team that should leave no stone unturned in their efforts to get better today. However, it’s also clear that the real legwork of the rebuild will come in the 2025 offseason.

Trade Deadline: Grading the Steelers acquisition of OLB Preston Smith

Steelers trade a 2025 7th-round pick for Preston Smith, adding veteran power to their defense. How does this move grade out?

Teams throughout the NFL better watch out; there’s a new terrifying trio of edge rushers coming to sack their quarterback. Steelers’ outside linebackers T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and the newly acquired Preston Smith form arguably the greatest edge-rushing unit in the NFL today.

Smith was recently acquired at the 2024 NFL trade deadline when the Pittsburgh Steelers traded a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for his talents in the Steel City.

Pittsburgh General Manager Omar Khan had recently helped facilitate a trade to acquire WR Mike Williams from the New York Jets, which received a solid B grade here at Steelers Wire. But what about the acquisition of Smith?

The 31-year-old former Packers OLB provides quality starting experience behind Watt and Highsmith, as Smith has started 138 games since entering the league in 2015. Smith has accumulated 68.5 sacks over this period and comes to Pittsburgh in what can only be described as a bargain sale in Green Bay.

For only a 2025 seventh-round draft pick given up for Smith, Khan and the Steelers’ front office receive an A+ grade for the trade.

Broncos’ order of picks in 2025 NFL draft

The Broncos hold six picks in the 2025 NFL draft, including their own selections in the first four rounds.

Following the trades for quarterback Russell Wilson and coach Sean Payton in back-to-back offseasons, the Denver Broncos are scheduled to have first-, second- and third-round draft picks in 2025 for the first time since 2021.

Denver also holds its own fourth-round pick next year. Not until the fifth round will the Broncos have any pick swaps coming into play (pending future trades).

Here’s a look at the team’s order of picks in next year’s NFL draft, with help from prosportstransactions.com.

Broncos order of picks in 2025 NFL draft

Denver does not hold a fifth-round pick after trading that pick and pass rusher Bradley Chubb to the Miami Dolphins in 2022 in exchange for running back Chase Edmonds and first- and fourth-round draft picks. (The Broncos later used that first-round pick to acquire Payton in 2023.)

Denver also does not hold a seventh-round pick after trading that selection and tight end Albert Okwuegbunam to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

The 2025 NFL draft will be held in Green Bay from April 24-26.

49ers renew effort to sign All-Pro WR to long-term contract

After multiple trade rumors, the 49ers are reportedly renewing efforts to sign their star pass catcher to a long-term contract.

While all signs pointed toward a potential trade, there’s been another twist in the Brandon Aiyuk saga with the San Francisco 49ers. After reports surfaced earlier in the week, about the framework of trades being in place with multiple teams for Aiyuk, momentum could be swinging back in favor of the 49ers.

According to Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the 49ers have made a “renewed” effort in recent days to sign Aiyuk to a long-term deal. Pelissero and Garafolo reported the situation is “fluid,” with other teams interested in trading for Aiyuk still in the mix.

Via @TomPelissero on Twitter:

Since the minutes after the Super Bowl went final, there has been constant questions, chatter and rumors regarding Aiyuk’s future with the 49ers. The former first-round pick out of Arizona State is seeking a new massive contract as he enters the final year of his rookie deal with the 49ers. The 49ers have yet to budge as Aiyuk has been “holding in” at training camp.

With the preseason opener approaching and the start of the regular season looming, there have been links to multiple trades with the New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers being potential partners.

Although the saga has been stretched out, the ideal solution would be for Aiyuk to land a new contract with the 49ers. Aiyuk is coming off an All-Pro season, recording a career-best 1342 yards receiving with seven touchdowns.

Stay tuned at Niners Wire for all the latest updates regarding Aiyuk’s situation with the 49ers.

49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk reports to camp; could a trade still happen?

Steelers trading 49ers for WR Brandon Aiyuk could still happen… but probably not.

Significant news this afternoon when multiple reports revealed that San Fransisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was reporting to training camp.

Aiyuk has been the object of affection for Pittsburgh Steelers fans this offseason. Many agree the team should be more in desperation mode with their undesirable corps of wide receivers.

Could a trade still happen despite the fourth-year veteran attending camp? Sure. But there are 17 weeks between now and the deadline, which has been extended by a week this offseason (from Oct. 31 to Nov. 5).

The Niners might as well sit on their hands and wait for a sweet offer from a playoff contender seeking to add a weapon.

This wouldn’t bode well for the Steelers, of course, as without a surefire top receiver, it’s tough to see Pittsburgh being in that position come Week 10.

Omar Khan and company should’ve done whatever it took to acquire a No. 1A or No. 1B receiver this offseason, and they could suffer the consequences this season.

We should probably trust that Arthur Smith has a trick or two up his sleeve when it comes to the pigskin delegation.

But if Aiyuk gets traded this season and ends up with a division rival—say the Cleveland Browns—Steelers Nation will be up in arms.

2024 NFL mock draft: Four QBs go at the top, OT run shakes up first round

The 2024 NFL draft starts tomorrow and there feels like there is more up in the air than normal in this class. It’s not that no one knows mostly which players should go in the first round, but there a lot of ways the board can fall.

A lot of it is riding on how the quarterback dominoes and how the offensive tackle class end up falling. There are a lot of tackles and wide receivers, and people have them rated completely differently.

Here is our final full first round mock draft, featuring some surprising trade action:

There’s not much to say about Williams at this point that hasn’t been said before. This pick has been suspected for a while and has been pretty much confirmed ever since the Bears traded away Justin Fields.

This is where things start to get interesting and competitive. Here, we have the Commanders going with Maye because of his arm talent. He has the makings of a classic franchise quarterback.

The Patriots end up with the more exciting player in Daniels. The Heisman winner made himself a lot of money at LSU this season as he wasn’t a first-round player entering the year. He is a dynamic runner and has a lot of potential as a thrower. The arm strength is there, the doubters will point to processing and consistent accuracy.

TRADE

Arizona Cardinals receive: 2024 Round 1, Picks 11 and 23

Minnesota Vikings receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 4

This is the type of pick that can scare a fan base. He probably has the tools to succeed at the next level, but never really got to show it in college. The Vikings desperately need another quarterback though, so they cash in on their two first rounders and hope that it works out.

Harrison is one of the best and safest wide receiver prospects that we have seen in a long time. The Chargers luck out that the Cardinals decided to trade out in this mock and end up with a franchise guy for Justin Herbert.

We considered having the Giants trade up for a quarterback earlier, but instead they sit still and give Daniel Jones a weapon. Nabers dominated at LSU in a stacked offense, becoming the career receiving yards leader at a school with plenty of legacy at the position.

Alt is your prototypical franchise left tackle. He’s young and has a great size/athleticism combination. He’s the type of player that you draft and then don’t have to worry about for a long time.

Turner is the most exciting, and first selected, defender in this draft. Some believe him to be better than his former teammate and reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Will Anderson. He’s ultra fast and was incredibly productive in college.

TRADE

Chicago Bears receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 15 and 2024 Round 3, Pick 82

Indianapolis Colts receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 9

Odunze would be very intriguing for the Bears here, but instead they pick up another Day 2 selection in this draft and move down a couple of spots.

The Colts grab another piece for their offense and build out a wide receiver room that now holds two talented big-bodied players in Odunze and Michael Pittman.

Fuaga is the best right tackle prospect in this draft class. He’s a bit of a jack of all trades at tackle, good at pretty much everything you would ask for. He’s a mauler but also has brains and athleticism.

The Jets did sign some veteran tackles this offseason, but the Oregon State product ensures the position is taken care of for a long time.

Mitchell is the Dallas Turner of cornerbacks. He checks pretty much every box, especially after dominating the competition at the Senior Bowl.

Latu isn’t the popular pick to be the second edge defender taken in the draft, but he does scream Broncos. He has some medical questions, but has been healthy and ultra-productive for the last two years of his college career. He is pro-ready.

While Alt is the most sure-fire guy at tackle in this class, Fashanu might have the highest ceilings. He is ultra athletic and young, but can also step in on Day 1 to protect their quarterback. Another team finds their franchise tackle.

TRADE

New Orleans Saints receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 18 and 2024 Round 3, Pick 80

Cincinnati Bengals receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 14 and 2024 Round 5, Pick 175

The Bengals trade up to add more fire power to their offense and the Saints trade down to pick up a much-needed second Day 2 draft pick.

Browers is as much of a lock of a prospect that there can be, but tight end isn’t as valuable as other positions so he dropped a bit. In the right scheme, though, he can be very much worth trading up for.

Newton is an exciting pass rusher from the interior. A lot of people have the Bears doubling up on top offensive weapons, but here they secure one of the best players in the trenches to bolster their defense.

The Seahawks grab Verse and lock up one of their defensive end spots for years to come. He is as ready to compete in the NFL as you could ask for from a defender.

There is some disagreement on whether DeJean should play at cornerback or safety at the next level. The good news for the Jaguars is that they could use him at either position and just give him the best chance to succeed with his skill set.

The Saints are able to pick up another draft pick and still snag one of the draft’s top offensive tackles. He’s enough of an athlete to succeed wherever the Saints need him. That type of positional versatility is key when your line is in as bad of shape as the Saints’ is.

Murphy has an elite speed/strength combination that would make any defensive coordinator salivate. He is more of a run-first guy than Newton is, but should still have no issue getting to the quarterback.

Mims’ NFL career could end up going any number of ways. He has some medical red flags and is super raw, but if he pans out he will be a dominant offensive tackle for a long time.

TRADE

Miami Dolphins receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 24 and 2024 Round 5, Pick 174

Dallas Cowboys receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 21 and 2024 Round 6, Pick 198

Cowboys trade up for a great athlete to pair with Trevon Diggs. He also has some slot versatility that will let him roam around the defense and cover different types of receivers with success.

Wiggins showed off his elite speed at the NFL combine with his 4.28 40-yard dash. That alone might be good enough for him to go in the first round for some teams, but he also has the other tools to secure his spot. The Eagles lucked out with him falling this far.

The Cardinals bolstered their defense earlier and now the trade down allows them to go after the best interior offensive lineman available in the draft. He likely grades out best as a center, but does have some guard flexibility.

Barton could end up at any number of spots at the next level, which is perfect for a Dolphins team that doesn’t have a lot of lineman that they would characterize as franchise players. He’ll give them the chance to put him wherever they need him the most.

TRADE

Green Bay Packers receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 28 and 2024 Round 4, Pick 133

Buffalo Bills receive: 2024 Round 1, Pick 25 and 2024 Round 5, Pick 169

The Bills take advantage of one of the drafts biggest slippers in this mock. Thomas has a great size and speed combo that led to him leading the country in touchdown catches. After trading away Stefon Diggs, Buffalo needs another top guy.

While he isn’t the best athlete at the position in the draft, he might just be the most pro-ready. He’s been starting in the SEC for three years, which is not something that Nick Saban took lightly during his time at Alabama.

Now the Cardinals, with their third selection in the first round, grab an exciting receiver. They were able to pick up an extra first round selection and still get someone that people believe could become a great WR1, albeit not to the same level as Harrison.

Latham is another one of these super young, super athletic offensive tackles but he is a little bit less ready for the next level than the other guys. The Packers could have him learn a little bit and cut down on the penalties. He’s pretty much everything you would want out of the mold of an offensive tackle, though.

Here is the first big shock of the first round. The Lions take the ultra-athlete edge rusher out of Penn State. Robinson wasn’t very productive in college, but it’s hard not to get excited about a 6’3, 254-pound guy that can run a 4.48.

Paul is another guy that could sneak into the first round based on how intriguing he is. He’s a mountain of a tackle at 6-foot-7, 331-pounds but does not sacrifice athleticism. It’s a bit of a swing as a lot of people like some of the more higher-floor guys left on the board, but it’s a swing that Baltimore can afford to take.

Speaking of the other offensive tackles, Guyton goes to San Francisco. He’s another very raw player that checks all of the physical boxes. He has only been playing the position since college, so the 49ers will have to give him some time to solidify.

It’s not the wide receiver that is expected to go here by many, but Franklin is a very intriguing guy that could easily slip into the first round. He’s tall, fast and runs very well.

New England Patriots open to trading Mac Jones per NFL Network Insider

Mac Jones may be a name to watch in trade rumors in the coming weeks

Former Alabama quarterback [autotag]Mac Jones[/autotag] was given the impossible task of replacing the legendary [autotag]Tom Brady[/autotag] in New England after being selected No. 15 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Things appeared to be working as Jones was named as Pro Bowler for the 2021 season and posted a 10-7 record while completing 67.6% of his passes for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.

Unfortunately, the next two seasons have not quite gone according to plan in Foxborough as the team has gone 12-22 over that span and fired long-time head coach Bill Belichick. As the quarterback, most of the blame has fallen on the shoulders of Jones, despite the fact they have had one of the poorer rosters in the league for a few years now. In fact, it was part of the reason Brady left the Patriots in the first place.

Jones has been in and out of the lineup for the past season or two in favor of backup Bailey Zappe and it is getting to a point where both sides could probably use fresh starts. There have been stories of Jones getting into arguments with players and coaches, while the team has also not done him any favors. Now, with a new coach in town Jerod Mayo, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that both sides are trending in the direction of a fresh start.

There are no shortage of teams in the NFL who could use a quarterback right now and I believe there is still a lot to like about Jones. He is still on a rookie contract, you wouldn’t have trade much for him and he still has the upside of a first round pick.

2024 NFL mock draft: Predicting the first 32 picks after the combine

Trades abound in our post-combine mock draft for 2024’s first round. Sean Payton’s Broncos make a big move for a divisive quarterback prospect:

We learned a lot at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine — not just which prospects are rocketing up (or slipping down) big boards ahead of the 2024 draft, but which positions teams are hoping to attack in free agency. Making smart moves in March’s opening waves of signings allows teams to gamble in April’s draft, and we’re trying to reflect that in our updated mock draft.

And with that in mind, here’s how we see the first 32 picks shaking out (with the New Orleans Saints in the middle of the action):

What are the best trades of the NBA’s 2023-24 season so far?

And which were made by the Boston Celtics?

The 2024 NBA trade deadline has not even come and gone, and we have already had some amazing deals since the end of the 2022-23 regular season to consider. There was the deal that sent forward OG Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors to the New York Knicks.

There was a trade that sent Raptors forward Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers. And there was also the deal that moved Philadelphia 76ers veteran guard James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers. We can’t forget the move that put longtime Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard on the Milwaukee Bucks’ roster. And of course the moves that sent Washington Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis and former Bucks guard Jrue Holiday to the Boston Celtics.

NBAer Danny Green and his “Green Room” podcast took a look at them all to judge which were the best trades of the season.

Check it out above to hear which they picked.

Woj: Boston Celtics trade for Memphis Grizzlies big man Xavier Tillman

Tillman, a 25-year-old, 6-foot-8 forward with the heft to play center at 248 lbs., can rebound, pass, and defend well, and has shown flashes of an outside shot in the past.

The Boston Celtics have made a trade, and while it was far from fireworks, it is a consequential one in that the Celtics are reportedly trading for Memphis Grizzlies big man Xavier Tillman, according to senior ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski.

Per Woj, the “Celtics are sending a 2027 second (round pick) via (the Atlanta Hawks) and a 2030 second via (the Dallas Mavericks) to the Grizzlies … Boston gets Tillman, a young, versatile frontcourt player who gives them some depth for a championship run.” The deal will fill the Celtics’ last open roster spot, and could make use of part of the team’s $6.2 million traded player exception from the Grant Williams sign-and-trade.

But Boston could also elect to keep that resource untouched, should the front office have plans to use it for further moves ahead of tomorrow’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline. UPDATE: Per Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer, Celtics forward Lamar Stevens is headed to Memphis in the deal.

Tillman, a 25-year-old, 6-foot-8 forward with the heft to play center at 248 lbs., can rebound, pass, and defend well, and has shown flashes of an outside shot in the past. This season, he’s averaged 6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in 20.6 minutes of floor time with Memphis.

He would provide some insurance and a different look resembling the game of veteran Boston big Al Horford, particularly if Boston can help get that 3-point shot (career 26.4%) to come around.
