2020 NFL draft order and trade value chart for each pick

Here’s a look at the trade value for each pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

The Denver Broncos have 10 picks to use in the NFL draft (April 23-25) this year, including the 15th overall pick in the first round.

We have discussed the possibility of trading up in the first round for a player like Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons but such a trade might be too expensive. Instead, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos use some of their extra third-round picks to trade back into the first round or second rounds of the draft.

It’s impossible to predict what Denver will do but it’s not impossible to estimate what it would cost to make some trades. Here’s a handy trade value chart with estimated values for each pick in the draft:

The Broncos’ first-round pick is worth 1,050 points and their second-round pick is worth 440 points. The value of Denver’s third-round pick drops all the way down to 175 points and the team’s seventh-round picks are worth just one point each.

2020 NFL Draft trade value chart for the Detroit Lions

2020 NFL Draft trade value chart for the Detroit Lions

Back when he was the Dallas Cowboys head coach, Jimmy Johnson created a revolutionary trade value chart for every draft pick. It assigned a specific point value to every pick in every round in an attempt to make sure a trade was fairly equitable for his team.

The point values have changed over time with the changes to the CBA more historical data on the expected outcome of draft slots. But Johnson’s basic chart remains a fixture for NFL teams and the media alike.

These values are more of a guideline than a hard rule. If a team really wants to make a deal for a specific player, they might look past not earning the matching amount of return compensation.

As an example, let’s say the Los Angeles Chargers want to trade up with the Lions for the No. 3 pick. The Chargers have the No. 6 pick, which is valued at 1600. Their second-round pick is valued at 530, which totals shy of the 2200 value the Lions’ pick has with the third pick. Los Angeles’ 4th round pick spans the gap at 70 points.

Browns 2020 NFL draft trade value chart

Browns 2020 NFL draft trade value chart

Wondering what it might take for the Cleveland Browns to trade up, or down, from the No. 10 pick in this month’s draft? Trying to make hypothetical deals work out from a value standpoint? The 2020 NFL Draft trade value chart and full draft order is here to help!

Each pick is assigned a value based on the slot. It’s based on the old chart created by then-Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson to provide a value for what a team should expect in return for a trade for any specific draft slot.

It’s become more of a guideline than a steadfast rule, but the concept of determining equity for draft trades remains pretty close to these values.

The Browns No. 10 pick is worth 1,300 points. Let’s say the Tampa Bay Buccaneers want to trade up from No. 14. That spot is worth 1,100. The Bucs’ second-round pick is worth 450, their third-rounder is valued at 210, and the 4th is at 60.

Trading No. 14, their 3rd and 4th-round picks would probably get it done (again, hypothetically) even though the values aren’t exact. If the Browns held firm for the 2nd-round pick, then Cleveland would have to send back a third of its own to make it more equitable.

Updated Chiefs’ 2020 NFL draft picks with trade value chart

Keep track of the trade value of all of the Kansas City Chiefs’ draft picks here.

In the NFL draft, nothing can be said to be certain except for fans booing the commissioner, a team drafting a kicker way too high, and Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach making trades.

Seeing a trade from Veach in this month’s draft is quite likely for Chiefs fans. In each of the past two drafts with Kansas City, Veach has traded draft capital to either move up in the draft or to acquire a player. He was quite selective in the 2018 NFL draft, using the team’s eight picks to move around and make a total of six selections. The Chiefs traded up a total of three times in order to select Breeland Speaks, Derrick Nnadi and Kahlil McKenzie. They also acquired pick No. 100 in the Speaks trade, which was used on Dorian O’Daniel. In the 2019 NFL draft, the Chiefs traded their first-round pick for DE Frank Clark. They also moved up to select Mecole Hardman at pick No. 56 in the second round.

In order to determine the value of draft picks, NFL teams use a trade value chart. Most of them are based on the chart below, which was devised by Jimmy Johnson when he was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the 90s. To get a better idea of what each pick in the draft is worth, here is a look at the 2020 NFL draft order with their accompanied trade values:

Here are the individual values of the Chiefs’ draft picks this year, per the chart:

Round 1, No. 32: 590
Round 2, No. 63: 276
Round 3, No. 96: 116
Round 4, No. 138: 37
Round 5, No. 177: 19.4

Total value: 1,038.4

The Chiefs have a first-round pick, for the first time since 2017, which significantly increases the total value of their picks.

It’s entirely possible the Chiefs use that first-round pick to make a move up during the upcoming draft. If the Chiefs combine all of their draft capital they can move up as high as pick No. 16 in the first round. That’d leave them with a single pick and little flexibility, though.

Their first-round pick is also a prime spot for moving back into the second round. Keep in mind that salary cap space also comes into play here. As Kansas City adds more draft picks, they’ll add more salary cap commitments too. With their current draft slots, the Chiefs are projected to need just over $5.1 million according to Over The Cap.

Use the chart above and play around with some potential trades for Kansas City. Be sure to let us know the haul that you end up with on Twitter and Facebook.

2020 NFL Draft: Full draft order with trade values for all picks

2020 NFL Draft: Full draft order with trade values for all picks

The NFL draft is set to become a virtual phenomenon later this month and there will certainly be plenty of movement with teams looking to move up or down the draft board.

With the Eagles in need of a top-tier wide receiver, Howie Roseman and company could look at possibly utilizing their eight remaining picks to move up the board.

If the Eagles and other teams do consider trades, they’ll likely refer to a value chart that determines what picks will likely be used as compensation by both teams in the deal.

The Eagles moved up a few picks to land Andre Dillard in the 2019 draft, so movement is not out the norm for this team.

Below, there is the full 2020 draft order and the value for all the Eagles picks.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Eagles stand pat at No. 21 or choose to move back or up based on what value the team places on a certain player.
