Woj: Despite Robert Williams III likely returning by Christmas, Celtics may look to trade for another big

Interestingly, even with Timelord looking likely to return, Woj believes the Celtics may look to further bolster their frontcourt closer to the 2023 trade deadline.

The time for Timelord’s return is drawing closer.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Wednesday night that starting Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III is likely to be back on the court for Boston by Dec. 25. Speaking on an episode of “NBA Countdown” during the “Woj’s Corner” regular segment, the ESPN senior writer said Williams’ agent Kevin Bradbury had told him he expects the former Texas A&M star will be “back by Christmas.”

“He’s progressing well on his rehab,” suggested Wojnarowski. “And listen, this is a player who had two surgeries in the last calendar year — they certainly want to take their time.”

Interestingly, even with Timelord looking likely to return, Woj believes the Celtics may look to bolster their frontcourt closer to the 2023 trade deadline.

“You start to look out toward the February trade deadline (for) I think another big man — another center — who could play minutes in the case of Robert Williams missing time or a 36-year-old Al Horford out,” he explained.

Perhaps this is the source of Brian Windhorst’s recent mention of Boston perhaps having interest in San Antonio Spurs big Jakob Poeltl, or perhaps another target. But with so many minutes piled on Horford early in the season, there are plenty of good reasons to make such a move.

Could the Hornets’ PJ Washington make sense as a Boston Celtics trade target?

One prominent NBA analyst thinks so.

The Boston Celtics currently possess the best record in the NBA, and despite some dings to their frontcourt rotation, appear poised to return to the 2023 NBA Finals to compete for the ever-elusive Banner 18. As such, they are not likely to make any major moves unless they are the sort of player that could help the team beyond just this season.

But with this upcoming NBA draft looking to be full of potential star talent, teams struggling early might look to sell off such players’ rights cheaply to get in the hunt of a top pick in that draft, and Heavy’s Sean Deveney thinks the Celtics ought to be keeping tabs on Charlotte Hornets forward PJ Washington in case they are open to dealing the Kentucky alum.

“I don’t know why Charlotte doesn’t value PJ Washington, but I think (he) would be a great fit,” said Deveney on a recent episode of the “Celtics Lab” podcast.

“He can play both positions, he’s young and you’re going to have to pay him,” added the Heavy editor, referencing his looming restricted free agency.

But with Al Horford set to also hit unrestricted free agency this offseason with no guarantee Boston will be willing to match what he might command for the second time in recent years, a case is there to pull the trigger on a deal that Deveney believes will cost two first-round picks.

Taking the temperature on early season Boston Celtics trade targets

Heavy’s Sean Deveney joins us to zero in on what kind of players Boston might need, and what he’s hearing about their trade plans early on.

The Boston Celtics have played enough of their 2022-23 schedule to have an idea of what their roster can do, and they have reportedly been sniffing around the league to see what players might be available.

What do we know about the types of players they might be looking into, and what intel is out there regarding such potential trades?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast were joined by Heavy’s Sean Deveney to discuss early season trade chatter and what the status quo of the league might mean for the Celtics on the most recent episode.

If you want to hear what Deveney is being told by opposing GMs about Boston’s early season trade interest as well as how the team has been playing to start the season, check out the clip embedded below.

Celtics Lab 153: On 2022-23’s surprising start and what it might mean for the Boston Celtics’ trade options with Sean Deveney

Join us for a deep dive into the 2022-23 stat quo so far and what could mean for the trade deadline plans of the Celtics’ front office.

The 2022-23 NBA season is far enough along at this point that we can start getting an idea of what trends have substance to them and which might be  smoke and mirrors.

In a season when many teams seemed likely to tank for prized prospect Victor Wembanyama, few are playing poorly and fewer are doing so on purpose.

That might mean fewer potential trade options for contenders such as the Boston Celtics. Given the way they have been playing to start the season is that even very big concern for a team whose weaknesses appear to have been exaggerated?

To take stock of the 2022-23 season, and what it might mean for Boston’s teambuilding plans as it gears up for a run at Banner 18, we linked up with Heavy’s Sean Deveney to talk Celtics trades, the (lack of an) epidemic of tanking and what we like about the team so far.

When could NBA teams start making trades this season?

The Boston Celtics certainly wouldn’t mind some help in the frontcourt on the cheap.

When a generational basketball talent like Victor Wembanyama comes around, teams will often go to great lengths to have a chance at drafting the sort of player that can change the fortunes of even the most inept franchises through the impact that player has.

Such is the expectation surrounding the French big man prospect, who is currently playing in France’s LNB Pro A league to get some higher-level experience under his belt before declaring for the 2023 NBA draft. But so far, teams seem to be playing especially well despite speculation of a race to the bottom of the standings to secure a shot at Wembanyama.

When could NBA teams start making trades this season in light of this situation?

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Bobby Marks have to say on this topic.

Antonio Gibson could be a key to winning your fantasy football league

With the trade deadline approaching in fantasy leagues, acquiring Gibson could be big for your playoff run with a favorable schedule ahead.

We’re getting to the point in the season where each and every fantasy football manager needs to take a look in the mirror and decide what their real chances are at making a run in the playoffs is coming up. Like many NFL teams, some will be encouraged to be major buyers at the trade deadline, which is fast approaching in many leagues, while others may not be inclined to do so.

Unlike in the NFL, there is little incentive for failing managers to trade away expensive assets for future picks, unless you are in a dynasty league. However, if you find yourself on the brink of contending in the playoffs, this is a good time to look at potential improvements you can make to your roster, with an eye on the players who may have an easy schedule once the fantasy playoffs roll around, usually in weeks 14-16.

[lawrence-related id=43762]

For those in need, look no further than Washington RB Antonio Gibson, who has already been an encouraging sleeper that’s produced for managers who took a chance on him earlier this year. So far in his rookie season, Gibson is the RB15 in ESPN standard scoring, with 105 total points, averaging over 13 per game. Looking ahead, Washington has some favorable matchups on the schedule, with the following games on their schedule looking like this:

  • at Detroit Lions
  • vs. Cincinnati Bengals
  • at Dallas Cowboys
  • at Pittsburgh Steelers
  • at San Francisco 49ers
  • vs. Seattle Seahawks
  • vs. Carolina Panthers
  • at Philadelphia Eagles

In that stretch, the games against the Steelers and 49ers are really the only two that scare you as far as fantasy production goes, but catching the Seahawks, Panthers, and Eagles during the fantasy playoffs could be a major boost. On the contrary, it will be interesting to see how Gibson’s usage is affected by the quarterback change in Washington. Alex Smith is slotted to start in place of the injured Kyle Allen. Smith has a reputation for being a dump-off passer who often checks down to the running back. Though that sounds like a boost for Gibson, it will likely favor RB J.D. McKissic more than anything, who has stood in as the defacto pass-catching third-down back in Washington.

We will learn a lot more about Gibson’s role this weekend against the Lions, but it’s fair to say that if you’re looking for relatively under-the-radar players who could help you massively down the stretch, Gibson fits the mold.

Buy or Sell: 8 players Washington should trade for or trade away before NFL’s deadline

There’s reason to believe Washington should be active at the trade deadline, so here are 8 players they should buy or sell before next week.

The 2020 NFL Trade Deadline is fast approaching, and though it is still a little bit less than a week away, we have seen many teams wheeling and dealing thanks in part to the coronavirus pandemic and the protocol in place to have players ready to play as soon as possible.

For the Washington Football Team, there has been some major discussion as to whether or not they should be buyers or sellers at the deadline, largely mirroring their overall strategy for the rest of the season. Is it a year to tank, or rather go after the NFC East division title? Following their dominant win over the hopeless Dallas Cowboys, the latter seems to be a likely option, so I expect them to try and buy more than they sell before the Nov. 3rd deadline. With that being said, there are still a couple of pieces on the roster that they could stand to give up for some future assets. Here are eight players that Washington should either look to trade for, or trade away before the deadline.
