Tottenham’s Eric Dier entered the stands and got into a heated altercation with a fan

Yikes.

Tottenham Hotspur’s time in the FA Cup came to an end with Wednesday’s loss to Norwich City in a penalty shootout, but all the talk from North London didn’t concern the result on the field.

After the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs’ Eric Dier entered the stands, made his way far up to the end of a lower-level section and got into an altercation with a fan.

The incident wasn’t captured on the match broadcast, but photos and videos hit social media showing the 26-year-old English midfielder confronting someone in the crowd. At some point, security stepped in and got Dier out of the stands.

It was initially unclear what prompted Dier to make his way into the crowd. Spurs manager Jose Mourinho said after the match that it concerned comments about his family. Via Yahoo Sports:

“I think Eric Dier did what we as professionals cannot do but when someone insults you and your family is involved, especially your young brother. This person insulted Eric, the younger brother was not happy with the situation and Eric was not happy.

“We as professionals cannot do what he did.”

According to Sky Sports’ Kate Mason, Mourinho would not confirm whether racism was involved — prominent Twitter accounts speculated that racial abuse towards Tottenham players was the alleged cause of the ugly scene.

Tottenham, as a club, has yet to comment on the incident beyond Mourinho’s remarks.

Tottenham remains unbeaten in its last seven domestic games, but the absence of forwards Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were felt when the team succumbed 1-0 at home to RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

The north Londoners announced earlier in the week that Son would miss “a number of weeks” after undergoing surgery on a fractured arm, an injury he sustained while scoring a brace in Sunday’s 3-2 win at Aston Villa. The Spurs’ European fate hangs in the balance after Timo Werner’s second half penalty clinched an important first leg win for Leipzig, marking Tottenham’s first defeat since Liverpool edged the team 1-0 on January 11. Mourinho will face Chelsea, a club in which he won more trophies than any other club in his career.

Chelsea has its own share of injury concerns ahead of the capital clash, with N’Golo Kante, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic each certain to miss out. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is battling to make his first appearance of the season, while centre-back Andreas Christensen hopes to be involved after suffering a facial injury in Monday’s 2-0 loss at home to Manchester United.

Striker Tammy Abraham wasn’t involved in that defeat and could come back into the lineup at the expense of Michy Batshuayi, who failed to inspire against the Red Devils.

Mourinho has won four of his 10 meetings with Chelsea over the course of his career, though only two of those have come in the past decade. Son was sent off when the Spurs lost 2-0 at home to Chelsea in December, and the team’s chances don’t look much brighter ahead of the reverse fixture.

The Premier League returns this weekend with a very important match for both ends of the league table. Relegation-threatened Aston Villa hosts Top 4 hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur for a crucial tie. Jose Mourinho’s Spurs side has found some good form over recent weeks. In its last league match, it defeated Manchester City 2-0. This is in conjunction with advancing to the next round of the FA Cup. With the Champions League on the horizon, this mini-break in England should have helped Tottenham catch its second wind for the rest of the season. If the team can continue on its recent path of successful results, a Top 4 finish looks promising with Chelsea not making any additions in January.

On the opposite end of the table, Aston Villa is in a tough fight for its Premier League life. After being promoted to the top flight just this season, the Villains are in danger of going back down. The team is just one point above the relegation zone with 14 matches remaining. While there is plenty of time left to guarantee safety for next season, some positive results are needed. The club brought in some help in January to ensure it keeps its place in the league. Striker Mbwana Samatta has been brought in from Belgium to pick up the goal-scoring slack left by the injured Wesley.

Broncos might play Falcons in London in 2020

Broncos president/CEO Joe Ellis wants his team to play the Falcons in London during the 2020 NFL season.

If Denver Broncos president/CEO Joe Ellis has his way, the team will face the Atlanta Falcons at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England during the 2020 NFL season.

The Falcons are scheduled to have a “home” international game and Denver is scheduled to play an away game against Atlanta next season. Ellis, who has been campaigning for an international game for years, wants that game to be played in England.

“I haven’t heard anything from the league other than I’ve pestered and begged them,” Ellis said Monday. “I think it’d be really good for us to go there. I put in a personal request to [Falcons owner] Arthur Blank and he came up to me in the last league meeting and was supportive.”

The Broncos last played in London in 2010 against the San Francisco 49ers. Denver lost that game 24-16 but it was good exposure for the team.

“The league has to do what’s best for them in terms of their international strategy,” Ellis said, “but I think it would be good for the franchise, good for the organization . . . . I’m basically begging to get it because I think it’d be very good for us to play there.”

Last year, the NFL announced its international games for the 2019 season in late January. The league will likely announce its 2020 international games at a similar time this year, so Ellis should have an answer in the coming weeks.

Anthony Joshua could fight at Tottenham instead of occupied Wembley

Anthony Joshua’s next fight could take place in a new venue. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium officials have been keen on hosting the heavyweight.

If Anthony Joshua’s next fight takes place in his hometown of London, don’t expect it to take place at Wembley Stadium.

Promoter Eddie Hearn told The Independent that a scheduling conflict might prevent Joshua from fighting at the 90,000-seat venue, which has become the de facto home for the British heavyweight who regained his titles from Andy Ruiz Jr. this past Saturday in Saudi Arabia. Instead, Joshua and Co. might turn to another soccer stadium nearby.

“Wembley does not look great, date wise,” Hearn said. “Tottenham Hotspur is a nice new stadium for a U.K. fight and we have to look at it.”

The stadium, named for the popular soccer club, has a seating capacity of 62,000. It opened its doors in April.

“The phone has gone crazy with people saying ‘bring him here, bring him here,’” Hearn said.

Joshua is expected to face one of his mandatory challengers in Oleksandr Usyk or Kubrat Pulev.

Hearn said Joshua wants to fight back home after having traveled for both of his fights of 2019, a loss to Ruiz in New York and the victory in the Middle East.

“People have seen what we have just done in Saudi Arabia,” Hearn said, “and there are a lot of options internationally, but A.J. wants to box back in the U.K.”

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho returns to Old Trafford on Wednesday and will face Manchester United as an opponent for the first time since the Red Devils sacked him almost one year ago. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be eager to show his side has grown since Mourinho’s dismissal, with a chance to possibly jump up in the standings.

Tottenham boasts a perfect record in three matches under Mourinho so far, having most recently defeated Bournemouth 3-2 at home on Saturday. However, that was also the third time the team has conceded two goals in as many matches under the new coach. The Red Devils extended their winless run to three matches after drawing 2-2 at home to Villa on Sunday, the seventh time in their last eight games that they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet.

Lucas Moura scored twice when Tottenham thrashed United 3-0 in its last trip to Old Trafford in August 2018, when Mourinho was still employed by the latter. The North Londoners failed to score in four visits to the grounds prior to that, ending their drought in sensational style.

The Special One finds himself back in the away dugout, seeking what would be his 10th career victory against United in his 21st meeting. He’s only lost three times in those previous 20 clashes, twice while he was Chelsea manager and once at Inter Milan. Mourinho has traveled to Old Trafford on nine occasions and won in three of those—twice with the Blues in 2005 and once in March 2013 with Real Madrid.

United has lost once at home this season (three wins, three draws), while the Spurs clinched their first away league victory this term when Mourinho’s squad won 3-2 at West Ham in his debut.

Solskjaer is under some pressure to produce a win against his club’s former coach nearly one year after he took over at United, initially in a caretaker role. The Norwegian isn’t expected to have midfield star Paul Pogba back from an ankle injury until mid-December, while defenders Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are chasing fitness.

Mourinho appears to have had a rejuvenating effect on Dele Alli, who has scored or assisted in each of the three games and netted twice in the win over Bournemouth.

Reputations are on the line at Old Trafford when United seeks to fend off Mourinho’s soaring Spurs in what looks to be a vital fixture in the race for European qualification.

The international breaks are over for a while, which means the Premier League returns for the very busy holiday season. West Ham and Tottenham match up at London Stadium to kick off the weekend. It’s time for the contenders to separate themselves from the pretenders.

Tottenham Hotspur may have found the one opponent that has been more disappointing than them this season. West Ham finds itself just five points above the relegation zone with just 13 points through 12 matches. Manager Manuel Pellegrini’s job is under fire after the extremely poor start. The Hammers added several promising signings in the summer to an already talented squad. Many expected them to compete for a Europa League and even possibly challenge for the Top Four. Unfortunately, those prognostications haven’t come true. Tottenham hasn’t won any competition since its 2-0 win over Manchester United on September 22.

The Spurs are just one point better in the table, sitting in 14th. The downfall of Tottenham is possibly the most surprising story of the European season so far considering it was playing in the Champions League final less than six months ago. Mauricio Pochettino’s side has a ton of work to do to get back on track. It won’t be easy away from home where they haven’t won a match since January. It’s clear that the Spurs have the talent to succeed and turn around their season, the question is, have things become too out of hand behind the scenes to salvage their campaign?
