All 32 NFL quarterbacks (including Bo Nix) ranked by Total QBR

Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has a Total QBR rating of 53.6 through eight weeks. He ranks 23rd in the NFL.

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix posted a Total QBR rating of 78.4 in a 28-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers last week, bringing his season-long Total QBR average to 53.6.

That’s an improvement from last week’s rating (49.2), but Nix has dropped from being ranked No. 22 last week down to No. 23 this week.

Nix’s traditional passer rating this season is 81.4, which ranks 25th.

Unlike a traditional passer rating, the Total QBR “incorporates all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning, including how he impacts the game on passes, rushes, turnovers and penalties,” according to ESPN.

The metric takes into account scenarios that a traditional passer rating overlooks and considers “a team’s level of success or failure on every play to provide the proper context and then allocates credit to the quarterback and his teammate to produce a clearer measure of quarterback efficiency.”

With that context in mind, here’s a look at how Nix stacks up against the NFL’s other starting quarterbacks this fall.

Ranking all 32 NFL quarterbacks by Total QBR after Week 5

Where does Justin Fields rank among the 32 starting NFL quarterbacks?

The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves at a crossroads with the quarterback position. Justin Fields has played well the last five games in place of Russell Wilson, but not without his errors. Now Wilson is healthy ahead of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders but the team hasn’t decided who will get the start.

Fields is currently No. 22 in the NFL in Total QBR, ahead of quarterbacks like Jared Goff and Justin Herbert.

All 32 NFL quarterbacks (including Bo Nix) ranked by Total QBR

Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has a Total QBR rating of 43.1 through five weeks. He ranks 25th in the NFL.

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix had perhaps the best game of his career against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, completing 70.4% of his passes for 206 yards with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. He also rushed for a touchdown in a 34-18 win.

Despite that positive performance, Nix dropped from No. 20 down to No. 25 in ESPN’s Total QBR rankings this week. Strangely, ESPN gave Nix a 26.9 Total QBR rating against the Raiders, his worst of the season. That dropped Nix’s season-long rating down to 43.1.

Nix’s traditional passer rating against Las Vegas was 117.2, which represented his best passer rating thus far.

Nix had no turnovers against the Raiders, but he was sacked three times. Here’s a look at how Nix stacks up against the NFL’s other starting quarterbacks this fall.

Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has a Total QBR rating of 49.5 through four weeks. He ranks 20th in the NFL.

After throwing for just 60 yards against the New York Jets last week, Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has dropped from No. 17 to No. 20 in ESPN’s Total QBR rankings this week.

With that context in mind, Nix has a Total QBR rating of 49.5 (out of 100) four games into the season. Here’s how that stacks up against the NFL’s other starting quarterbacks this fall.

All 32 NFL quarterbacks (including Bo Nix) ranked by Total QBR

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has a Total QBR rating of 54.4 this season, which ranks 15th out of 32 starting NFL QBs.

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix is yet to throw his first touchdown pass in the NFL, but he has rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns through three games this season.

Nix has a Total QBR rating of 54.4 this year, which ranks 15th in the NFL, about middle of the pack.

Here is part of ESPN’s explanation for its Total QBR rating, courtesy of Sharon Katz and Brian Burke:

ESPN’s Total Quarterback Rating (Total QBR), which was released in 2011, has never claimed to be perfect, but unlike other measures of quarterback performance, it incorporates all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning, including how he impacts the game on passes, rushes, turnovers and penalties. Also, since QBR is built from the play level, it accounts for a team’s level of success or failure on every play to provide the proper context and then allocates credit to the quarterback and his teammate to produce a clearer measure of quarterback efficiency.

So, with that context in mind, here’s a look at the QBR ratings for all 32 starting quarterbacks going into Week 4 of the 2024 season.

  1. Josh Allen: 92.6
  2. Malik Willis: 89.5 (Jordan Love: 23.0)
  3. Andy Dalton: 86.6 (Bryce Young: 9.1)
  4. Derek Carr: 81.1
  5. Kyler Murray: 75.6
  6. Brock Purdy: 74.4
  7. Sam Darnold: 73.5
  8. Lamar Jackson: 68.7
  9. Jayden Daniels: 67.9
  10. Joe Burrow: 62.5
  11. Geno Smith: 62.4
  12. Jalen Hurts: 60.9
  13. Aaron Rodgers: 60.3
  14. C.J. Stroud: 55.3
  15. Justin Herbert: 55.2
  16. Matthew Stafford: 55.2
  17. Bo Nix: 54.4
  18. Daniel Jones: 52.7
  19. Jacoby Brissett: 50.5
  20. Anthony Richardson: 49.6
  21. Kirk Cousins: 49.1
  22. Patrick Mahomes: 48.0
  23. Justin Fields: 47.4
  24. Dak Prescott: 45.5
  25. Baker Mayfield: 45.5
  26. Gardner Minshew: 44.1
  27. Trevor Lawrence: 43.1
  28. Jared Goff: 34.4
  29. Tua Tagovailoa: 33.8
  30. Will Levis: 29.6
  31. Caleb Williams: 26.8
  32. Deshaun Watson: 22.5

Note that Andy Dalton has a one-game sample size and Malik Willis has been a fill-in starter for two weeks, so we also listed Bryce Young and Jordan Love (Love would have been third from the bottom and Young would have been ranked last).

Nix and the Broncos will face the New York Jets on Sunday.

32 NFL QBs (including Russell Wilson and Jarrett Stidham) ranked by Total QBR in 2023

Broncos QB Russell Wilson ranked 21st with a 50.7 Total QBR rating in 2023. Jarrett Stidham ranked 31st with a 30.6 QBR rating.

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson started 15 games in 2023, posting a 98.0 passer rating in those contests (eighth-best in the NFL).

Jarrett Stidham started the final two games of the season and he had an 87.7 passer rating, which ranked 28th in the league this season.

Their “Total QBR” ratings on ESPN are much lower.

Wilson ranked 21st among qualifying quarterbacks (QBs with 20 action plays per team game) with a 50.7 QBR rating in 2023. Stidham ranks 31st with a 30.6 QBR rating.

ESPN’s Total QBR “values the quarterback on all play types on a 0-100 scale,” taking into account factors such as the defense faced, the QB’s actual contribution to a play and efficiency.

To see how Wilson and Stidham compared to other QBs across the league this season, we’ve listed ESPN’s 30 qualifying QBs from the 2023 season below, plus Joe Flacco (now a starter for the Cleveland Browns) and Stidham (who ended the year as Denver’s starter).

All 32 NFL QBs (including Jarrett Stidham) ranked by Total QBR entering Week 18

Based on a one-game sample size, Jarrett Stidham has a 31.3 Total QBR rating, third-worst among current NFL starters.

The Denver Broncos benched quarterback Russell Wilson last week and turned the offense over to Jarrett Stidham.

Wilson ended his 2023 campaign ranked 21st among qualifying* quarterbacks with a 50.7 Total QBR rating (*ESPN’s season-long list only includes QBs with 20 action plays per team game).

ESPN’s Total QBR “values the quarterback on all play types on a 0-100 scale,” taking into account factors such as the defense faced, the QB’s actual contribution to a play and efficiency.

To see where Stidham stacks up, we’ve listed all 32 starting quarterbacks below, ranked in order of their Total QBR rating.

Stidham’s rating (31.3) is considerably lower than Wilson’s and it ranks 30th among current starters, but he only has a one-game sample size. In fact, multiple current starters listed below have a very small sample size, which skews the ratings.

With that caveat in mind, here’s a quick look at all 32 (projected) starting quarterbacks going into the final week of the 2023 NFL season.

NFL quarterbacks by Total QBR: Where Patriots’ Bailey Zappe ranked in Week 17

Ranking every NFL quarterback by Total QBR in Week 17

New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe took a significant step back in the Total QBR department in Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The second-year signal caller ranked 26th out of the other Week 17 quarterbacks after a run-in with a ferocious Bills defense on the road. He threw for 209 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

All of the turnovers came in the first half, and Zappe was able to make plays down the stretch to keep the Patriots in the game. So his performance wasn’t nearly as bad as it looks on paper.

If anything, Zappe showed a willingness to step up in the pocket and make plays, even when nothing seemed to be going right around him initially. The Patriots also fielded a banged-up offensive line that struggled to hold up against the Bills’ pass rush.

Per ESPN.com, Total QBR “incorporates all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning, including how he impacts the game on passes, rushes, turnovers and penalties.”

Here is where every NFL quarterback, including Zappe, ranked in Week 17:
