Pat Surtain ranked No. 19 on CBS list of NFL’s Top 100 players

Pat Surtain is ranked No. 19 on the Top 100 NFL players list from CBS. Sound about right?

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain is ranked 19th on CBS’ list of the Top 100 NFL players entering 2023. Surtain totaled 60 tackles (46 solo), two interceptions, and ten pass deflections and has established himself as a lockdown corner in the league last fall.

Here’s what Pete Prisco of CBS had to say about why he placed Surtain at 19th on his top 100 list:

He developed into one of the best cover players in the league last season. In his second season, he had four picks but really excelled in pass coverage. He’s also a willing tackler in the run game.

Surtain helped lead Denver to a top-five defense last season, but their 5-12 record is all that fans and pundits will think about. New head coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who is also a former Broncos head coach, are looking to match offensive and defensive success this season.

Perhaps, with the Payton-Joseph pairing, Surtain can become the best defensive player in the NFL.

Jets land four players on CBS Sports’ top 100 list

The Jets see some good representation with CBS’ top 100.

The summer is right around the corner which means a yearly staple of the offseason is coming soon: the NFL Players’ Top 100 list.

You’ve come across these lists over the years, where players across the league rank their top players and it comes together in a multi-part series on NFL Network during the summer.

As a result, other places across the media try their hand at making a top-100 list as well. CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco recently did so and the Jets make a pretty good appearance on the list.

Four players crack the top 100 for CBS, all within the top 70 with three among the top 30 and one in the top 20 — you can probably guess that player or perhaps all four without even looking.

Let’s check out those players and what CBS and Prisco had to say about each player.

Several Ducks get snubbed in On3 Top 100 ranking

Bo Nix is ranked highly among the top 100 players in 2023. What about the other Ducks?

The Pac-12 is primed to be one of the best conferences not named the SEC for the 2023 college football season. Recruiting has been at an all-time high in the past several seasons and the talent pool in the Pac-12 shows it.

Teams such as Oregon, USC and even Washington match up well with any program in the country where pure talent is concerned. On3.com went ahead and ranked the Top 100 players in college football and the Pac-12 is represented favorably.

But there were some glaring snubs when it comes to Oregon. Quarterback Bo Nix is ranked 13th overall. That’s it for Oregon. No Troy Franklin. No Jordan Burch.

Here are the Pac-12 players listed with their 2022 stats and the Ducks we felt that had a legitimate case to be included in the ranking.

Cowboys place 4 on ESPN’s 100-player MVP ballot

ESPN took the league’s new MVP rules several steps further, ranking their top 100 vote-getters. The Cowboys are well-represented. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The league’s Most Valuable Player race will still come down to one exemplary player, but a change in the voting procedure promises to make for some interesting back-and-forth when the end-of-season awards are finally handed out in early February.

Starting this year, each Associated Press voter will cast a ballot ranking their top five choices for MVP (and top three for every other prize) instead of listing just one name for each award. The idea is to recognize not only the most elite of the elites, but also players and coaches who are near the top of their class and deserve an honorable mention for their 2022 contributions.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would seem to be the runaway favorite for this season; not much drama there. Maybe someone else earns a few stray first-place votes. So perhaps the meatier food for thought will be sorting through who should rightfully come in second, third, and so on.

ESPN analytics guru Seth Walder took that idea and ran ever further with it. Rather than stop at five names for MVP, he compiled a ballot that ranks the NFL’s 100 most valuable players.

He used hard stats and metrics to arrive at his choices but also factored in qualitative analysis, other awards, and the opinions of league personnel. Quarterbacks still dominate the top of the list; Walder notes that he “focused on how much value a player created relative to an average starter at their position.”

The Cowboys are well-represented, with one player falling just barely outside the Top 10 and a total of four stars placing in the Top 60. (Only the Eagles, Chiefs, and 49ers have more players in that group.)

Broncos QB Russell Wilson ranked No. 61 on NFL Network’s Top 100 list

We expect Russell Wilson to be ranked much higher on this list in 2023.

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is ranked No. 61 on NFL Network’s Top 100 list, as voted on by players. That’s a big drop from his No. 12 ranking last year.

Meanwhile, Broncos safety Justin Simmons is ranked No. 81, which is just as ridiculous (Touchdown Wire considers Simmons the second-best safety in the NFL).

If it’s any consolation, Touchdown Wire has Wilson ranked as the eighth-best quarterback in the NFL.

It’s possible that Wilson and Simmons might be Denver’s only players on the list this year. Last year, the Broncos had three players on the list: outside linebacker Bradley Chubb (No. 40), Simmons (No. 45) and left tackle Garett Bolles (No. 82).

Denver cornerback Pat Surtain should be on the list, but it seems unlikely that he’d crack the top 50 (players 51-100 have been revealed so far). Broncos running back Javonte Williams will likely be on the list next year, but it seems safe to assume he’s not ranked in the top 50, either.

If Denver returns to the playoffs this season, fans can expect Broncos players to get a lot more love on these kinds of lists in 2023.

Broncos DB Justin Simmons ranked No. 81 on NFL Network’s Top 100 list

Justin Simmons is ranked way too low. The list is ridiculous.

Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons is ranked No. 81 on NFL Network’s Top 100 list this year. The list is voted on by NFL players, but the voting process if flawed.

It’s a ridiculously low ranking for Simmons, who was No. 45 on the list last year. Simmons broke up nine passes and totaled five interceptions in 2020. He then broke up 12 passes and grabbed five interceptions again in 2021, but his ranking dropped 36 spots.

It’s likely a reflection of the Broncos not getting much respect overall as a team — good players on bad teams rarely get the same kind of attention as good players on good teams (just look at Pro Bowl rosters).

Last year, the Broncos had three players on the list: outside linebacker Bradley Chubb (No. 40), Simmons and left tackle Garett Bolles (No. 82).

Although he got little respect on NFL Network’s list, Simmons was ranked as the NFL’s second-best safety by Touchdown Wire earlier this year.

No Broncos made PFF’s list of top 50 players in the NFL

Broncos players got no love on PFF’s list of the top 50 players in the NFL.

Denver Broncos fans are optimistic about the team’s outlook for the 2022 season and beyond, but national pundits remain skeptical.

Broncos players got little love from EA Sports with mostly poor ratings in Madden NFL 23, and they didn’t get any love from Pro Football Focus in a recent list of the top 50 players in the NFL today.

PFF’s list of the top 50 players in the league didn’t include any Denver players, not even quarterback Russell Wilson. The QBs who did make the list: Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Tom Brady, Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert.

Broncos safety Justin Simmons and cornerback Pat Surtain were also snubbed on PFF’s list. But Simmons was recently ranked second among safeties and Surtain is ranked 11th among cornerbacks by Touchdown Wire.

Touchdown Wire also ranked Wilson eighth among quarterbacks and Javonte Williams third among running backs going into the 2022 season.

So players in Denver are getting some respect from national pundits, but it’s not across the board. If Wilson helps the Broncos return to the playoffs this year, perhaps the team will get more national recognition in 2023.

Seahawks get 4 spots on NFL’s list of top 100 catches of 2020

The Seattle Seahawks notched four spots on the NFL’s list of the 100 greatest catches of the 2020 season, three by Lockett and one by Moore.

The NFL recently released their list of the 100 greatest catches of the 2020 season, and the Seattle Seahawks had four plays that notched spots on it.

Wide receiver Tyler Lockett had three of the four, while fellow WR David Moore got the other.

Lockett’s touchdown reception against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11 clocked in at No. 90, and two of his 15 receptions in Week 7 against the same team got in the upper half; his one-handed catch over Patrick Peterson came in at No. 49, and his toe-dragging touchdown to make the score 34-24 got No. 43.

However, the biggest of all was Moore’s 38-yard touchdown catch in Week 2 against the New England Patriots to give the Seahawks a 21-17 lead, a reception that had a particularly notable stat attached to it.

Texas softball pitcher Miranda Elish named No. 2 player in the country

Texas softball pitcher Miranda Elish was off to a hot start in 2020. now she is ranked second in Softball America’s Top 100.

Last season, pitcher Miranda Elish was off to a hot start for the Texas softball team. The only thing that could apparently stop her and the rest of team was COVID-19. The Longhorns were 24-3 before the season was shut down due to the pandemic. The team blanked New Mexico 7-0, while Elish threw her second career perfect game.

Elish led the team in strikeouts with 96. She finished the year with a 11-3 record and an earned run average of 1.25. Her efforts earned National Player of the Year honors for the former Oregon transfer. Big things are expected from Elish in her return to the circle in the 2021 season.

According to Softball America’s Top 100 rankings, Elish comes in ranked  No. 2 in the country. Her ranking gives the Big 12 Conference its only player in top five in the country. In her second season in Austin, there’s certainly unfinished business. Oklahoma was viewed as the preseason favorite but given how last season went, Texas should be the top dog as the season approaches in 2021.

The Longhorns softball team finished ranked No. 3 in the country according to USA TODAY/Coaches poll at the end of the shortened season, despite the fact that Texas defeated the No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Washington teams on back-to-back nights. With Elish leading the way, the sky is the limit for this team in 2021.
