Jets hiring Titans’ Tony Dews as next RBs coach

The Jets are reportedly hiring Titans coach Tony Dews as their next running backs coach.

After serving as a coach on the Tennessee Titans’ staff for six years, tight ends coach Tony Dews is moving on to another team.

According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the New York Jets are hiring Dews as their next running backs coach. He is the first coach from former head coach Mike Vrabel’s staff to take a job elsewhere.

In New York, Dews will be reunited with a pair of former Titans coaches, including Keith Carter (offensive line coach) and Todd Downing (passing-game coordinator).

Dews served as the Titans’ running backs coach for five seasons before he was moved to tight ends in 2023.

Prior to his stint in Nashville, Dews had two decades of coaching experience in college, where he worked with several positions, including defensive line, offensive line, defensive backs, tight ends, linebackers, running backs and wide receivers. He also coached special teams.

Dews isn’t the only Titans coach to receive interest elsewhere, as defensive coordinator Shane Bowen and defensive backs coach Chris Harris both had defensive coordinator interviews, and outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow got a look for a defensive line job.

Jets hire Tony Dews as running backs coach

Jets hire Tony Dews as running backs coach

The Jets have hired former Titans assistant coach Tony Dews to be their new running backs coach, per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Dews spent the last six seasons in Tennessee, five coaching the running backs before moving over to the tight ends last season. Dews reunites with offensive line coach Keith Carter. The two spent five years together under head coach Mike Vrabel.

Dews replaces Taylor Embree, whom the Jets decided not to bring back for a fourth season with the team.

In Dews’ five seasons as the running backs coach, Derrick Henry rushed for 1,000 yards four times — and easily would have been five as he rushed for 937 yards in just eight games in 2021. Of those four seasons, three saw at least 1,500 yards for Henry and 2020 saw Henry become just the eighth running back in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season when he went for 2,037.

Henry has also posted six straight seasons with at least ten rushing touchdowns. That could bode very well for the prospects this season for Breece Hall, who totaled almost 1,600 yards in 2023.

Two early candidates for Jets’ vacant running back coaching position

A look at two early candidates for the Jets’ vacant running back coaching position: Duce Staley and Tony Dews.

It was reported Tuesday morning by SNY’s Connor Hughes that Taylor Embree will not return as the running backs coach for the New York Jets. So far, via various reports, two early names have popped up to fill the vacancy to coach Breece Hall and the other running backs. Those candidates include former Panthers running back coach Duce Staley and Tony Dew, who spent 2023 as the tight ends coach for the Tennessee Titans. Let’s take a look at these two candidates.

Jets to interview Titans’ Tony Dews for RBs coach

The Jets will reportedly interview Titans tight ends coach Tony Dews for their running backs coach vacancy.

Tennessee Titans tight ends coach Tony Dews reportedly has yet another interview with a team from New York.

According to ESPN’s Turron Davenport, the New York Jets plan to interview Dews for their running backs coach position, which became vacant after the team parted ways with Taylor Embree.

This is the second interview for Dews, who also received a look from the New York Giants for their running backs coach vacancy before Big Blue hired Joel Thomas.

If you don’t follow the Titans, you might be confused by the fact that I called Dews the tight ends coach. He indeed served in that role in 2023, but before that he was running backs coach in Tennessee for five seasons.

Prior to his stint in Nashville, Dews was a college coach for two decades, working with several positions in that span, including tight ends, running backs, defensive and offensive line, wide receivers and linebackers.

Titans’ Tony Dews falls short in bid for Giants RBs coach

Titans coach Tony Dews did not land the running backs coach job with the Giants.

Tennessee Titans tight ends coach Tony Dews was one of the candidates for the New York Giants’ running backs coach vacancy, but he did not end up getting the job.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Giants have hired New Orleans Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas instead.

Dews served as the Titans’ running backs coach from 2018 through 2022 before being moved to tight ends coach in 2023.

Before joining the Titans in 2018, Dews spent two decades in the college coaching ranks, working with tight ends, running backs, wide receivers, offensive linemen and defensive linemen.

Dews is one of three Titans coaches to receive interviews for vacancies around the league.

Titans cornerbacks coach and defensive pass-game coordinator Chris Harris was scheduled to interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive coordinator vacancy on Tuesday.

In addition, defensive coordinator Shane Bowen was slated to meet with the Jags and Giants for their defensive coordinator openings some time this week.

Report: Giants granted permission to interview Tony Dews for RB coach vacancy

The Tennessee Titans have granted the New York Giants permission to interview Tony Dews for their vacant running backs coach job.

The Tennessee Titans have granted the New York Giants permission to interview tight ends coach Tony Dews for their vacant running back coach position.

The news was first reported by long-time Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky.

Although Dews coached the tight ends in 2023, he spent the previous five seasons serving as the Titans’ running backs coach.

Prior to his time in Tennessee, the 50-year-old Dews spent two decades coaching at the college level. He worked with defensive and offensive lines, tight ends, wide receivers, linebackers, and special teams units with his most notable stint coming with Michigan from 2008-2010.

As Titans running backs coach, Dews helped develop Derrick Henry into one of the top backs in the game. Tennessee was also routinely among the NFL’s best in rushing during that span.

Dews is the second Titans assistant to interview with the Giants, joining defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, who interviewed for the same role.

In addition to Dews, the Giants also previously interviewed New Orleans Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas for the vacant role.

Titans coach Tony Dews to interview for Giants’ RBs coach role

Titans TEs coach Tony Dews is reportedly set to interview for the Giants’ running backs coach vacancy.

Yet another Tennessee Titans coach is set to interview for a vacancy with another team.

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, the New York Giants have been granted permission to interview tight ends coach Tony Dews for their vacant running backs coach position.

Prior to serving as tight ends coach in 2023, Dews served as the Titans’ running backs coach from 2018-22.

During that time, Titans running back Derrick Henry developed into one of the best players at his position and the team routinely sported one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL.

Prior to his stint in Nashville, Dews had two decades of collegiate coaching experience, working with defensive and offensive lines, tight ends, wide receivers, linebackers and special teams units.

Dews is the third Titans coach we know of to garner at least one interview, and the second to get a look from the Giants.

Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen got a look from the Giants for their vacant defensive coordinator job, and both Bowen and cornerbacks coach Chris Harris are candidates for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ DC job.

A pair of Tennessee Titans coaches will be taking part in the NFL Coach Accelerator program this year.

According to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, Titans pass-game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Charles London, and tight ends coach Tony Dews will be in attendance.

They are two of 16 coaches returning after taking part in last year’s event. Here’s more on the program, per NFL.com:

The Coach Accelerator aims to increase exposure between owners, executives, and diverse coaching talent, providing ample opportunity to develop and build upon their relationships. In a change to the nomination process this year, clubs were able to nominate those from outside of their organization.

The 40 participants this year are attending based on their high potential to be considered for a head coach position in the future. Sixteen of the participants will be returning from the May 2022 Accelerator cohort.

In addition to networking, further development of the participants is a critical component of the accelerator, with curated content sessions scheduled that will further engage each participant on the advancement of their executive leadership skills and business acumen.

“It was a great experience to be a part of the first Accelerator, and I’m excited to continue this journey,” London said. “I look forward to networking and growing my professional development.”

The program will take place during the Spring League Meetings and will run from May 21-23 in Minneapolis.

2 Titans to participate in NFL Coach and Front Office Accelerator program

Titans RBs coach Tony Dews is one of two Titans set to attend the first ever NFL Coach and Front Office Accelerator program.

Tennessee Titans running backs coach Tony Dews and director of pro scouting Brian Gardner will take part in the first ever NFL Coach and Front Office Accelerator program.

Here’s more information on the summit, which will take place from May 23-24 in Atlanta and include more than 60 head coach and general manager prospects from 32 teams, per the NFL:

The program will provide senior women and minority prospects with leadership development sessions with football operations experts and facilitators, as well as time spent networking directly with club owners. The effort is designed to continue building a diverse hiring pipeline for future head coach and general manager positions throughout the League.

Each club nominated rising prospects to participate in the two-day Accelerator. In addition to leadership development and sessions on the business of football, attendees will engage in candid discussions on how to take the next step in becoming a coach or front office executive.

“The NFL is committed to diversity and inclusion, and this program is the latest in a series of steps designed to improve our hiring practices and create opportunities for advancement,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “The program helps ensure that clubs receive exposure to high-performing, up-and-coming NFL talent and candidates get a chance to learn the business on a working level from team owners and executives.”

After almost two decades as a college coach, Dews was hired as the Titans’ running backs coach in 2018. Since then, the Titans have seen Derrick Henry notch a pair of rushing titles, one of which included a 2,000-yard season.

Gardner has been working in the NFL for 28 years, eight of which has been spent in Nashville. He also spent time with the Houston Texans and in the Canadian Football League, Arena Football League, and United Football League.

Titans coaches talk Derrick Henry’s routine during injury rehab

“He seems to be doing great. He’s in good spirits, he’s working hard. He’s his normal self,” Titans RBs coach Tony Dews said of Henry.

Despite the fact that he’s on Injured Reserve and currently rehabbing his foot following surgery, Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry remains around the team while undergoing the process.

On Monday, Titans head coach Mike Vrabel shed some light on exactly what Henry is up to on a regular basis, according to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.

“He’s on an Injured Reserve program,” Vrabel said. “So, he comes in … and starts treatment (when other players are in meetings). … He is around, he is around the guys. I see him in the training room, and he is working hard to do everything he can to get back.”

Tennessee’s running backs coach, Tony Dews, says he checks in on Henry regularly and says the superstar running back is “in good spirits.”

“It’s more of going in there just to see him, say hello to him and let him know that we obviously still care, think about him everyday. Just a regular conversation; doesn’t even necessarily talk about football,” Dews said. “He seems to be doing great. He’s in good spirits, he’s working hard. He’s his normal self.”

When Henry actually gets back remains to be seen.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported that Henry should be back in six to 10 weeks from the time of his surgery, which would place his return right before the playoffs begin.

On the other hand, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that he’s hearing it “would be very surprising” to see Henry suit up again in 2021.

The most recent news about Henry came from ESPN’s Dianna Russini, who reported that “there is optimism that [Derrick Henry] will be back early January,” which means Tennessee would have him for a playoff run.
