Three former Wisconsin Badgers remain in the transfer portal uncommitted

Three former Wisconsin Badgers remain in the transfer portal uncommitted

Wisconsin has had 23 players enter the transfer portal since the end of the 2023 season.

Many of those departures were either depth pieces or poor fits in Luke Fickell’s new-look program. The Badgers’ new head coach is still in the process of turning the roster over, which has led to a consistent stream of departures since his arrival.

Twenty of the 23 departures have found new landing spots. Only three players remain uncommitted: cornerback Amaun Williams, cornerback Michael Mack and wide receiver Tommy McIntosh.

  • Williams walked on in the class of 2020 after being rated as a two-star recruit. He played in 11 games in 2022 as a backup cornerback and on special teams. He entered the portal on Dec. 3 after the Badgers’ 2023 regular season concluded.
  • Mack initially transferred to Wisconsin from Air Force ahead of the 2023 season. He did not play during the year and was operating with the reserves during 2024 spring practice. He was a spring 2024 entrant into the portal.
  • McIntosh was a three-star recruit in Wisconsin’s class of 2022 — Paul Chryst’s final recruiting class as Badgers head coach. He did not see the field in his first two seasons, though he showed promise during 2023 spring practice. Wisconsin’s deep wide receiver depth chart made it unlikely that McIntosh would find a role in 2024, or in future years.

None of the three players have a 247Sports crystal ball prediction for their transfer destination.

Wisconsin capped an impressive transfer cycle with a surprising commitment from Stephen F. Austin defensive tackle Brandon Lane on Friday. The group of 16 additions is ranked in the top 25 of 247Sports’ transfer classes and will play a sizable role in the team’s success in 2024.

Wisconsin Badgers sophomore wide receiver enters transfer portal

Wisconsin Badgers sophomore wide receiver enters transfer portal

Wisconsin sophomore wide receiver Tommy McIntosh entered the transfer portal on Thursday.

McIntosh was a three-star commit in Wisconsin’s class of 2022 — the last class of the Paul Chryst era at the program.

The Michigan native did not see the field during his first two collegiate seasons. He was one of the early standouts of last year’s spring practice session, though had slid down the depth chart entering this spring.

Wisconsin’s wide receiver room is loaded after Luke Fickell’s work in the transfer portal over the last two offseasons. The group is led by transfers Will Pauling, Bryson Green and C.J. Williams — with other former transfers Quincy Burroughs, Tyrell Henry close behind.

McIntosh brings impressive size to the table at 6’5,” which should help him garner interest from other programs.

Grading the wide receiver additions in the 2022 class

Wisconsin took two wide receivers in it’s 2022 recruiting class. I breakdown Wisconsin’s recruiting process and grade the newest wide receiver additions.

The Wisconsin badgers signed 14 scholarship players during the early signing period of the 2022 recruiting cycle this past Wednesday. And while that number is subject to change, Wisconsin’s class currently ranks 44th in the country, and 11th in the Big Ten – with an average recruiting ranking of (0.87), per 247 sports.

In part three of a position by position recruiting evaluation series, I will be handing out grades for each position from the early signing period.

So, without further ado, here is my wide receiver evaluation.

WIDE RECEIVER: B-

Commits (2): Tommy McIntosh, Vinny Anthony

Total offers: (15)

Wisconsin didn’t exactly bring in anything that puts them over the top in this wide receiver class, but they did make some really solid additions.

Wisconsin is going to be looking at a total makeover of their core receivers for next season. They’ll be without Danny Davis, Kendric Pryor, and Jack Dunn. That leaves a significant amount of snaps needing to be filled.

Chimere Dike and Markus Allen are the leaders in the clubhouse to fill those roles, but who earns snaps behind them is anyone’s guess at this point.

It was imperative that Wisconsin add multiple players at this position, and thankfully they did.

Tommy McIntosh:

Tommy McIntosh out of DeWitt, Michigan is a three-star recruit per 247 sports.

Rankings: 772nd nationally, 114th WR, 21st ranked player in MI.

McIntosh is a big bodied (6-foot-5) downfield threat who recorded 64 receptions for 1,328 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior.

The thing that makes McIntosh so enticing is that he runs a 4.4-second 40-yard dash and has a 36-inch vertical leap – those are things you can’t teach.

He’s in a different mold than any other pass-catcher already in the receiving room, and it’s easy to see the upside here if he’s able to put it all together. A player with his kind of size could really help impact the game as a run blocker – which we know is something UW frequently asks of it pass-catchers.

McIntosh is a player who could develop into a downfield threat that would make for a tough match-up on the boundary.

Vinny Anthony:

Vinny Anthony is another high upside three-star recruit out of Louisville, Kentucky.

Rankings: 709th nationally, 100th WR, 5th ranked player in KY.

As a senior Anthony recorded 49 receptions for 1,108 yards with 16 touchdowns.

Vinny Anthony is a strong route runner, but what really stands out is his ability to high point the ball. This is also a player that could potentially help as a return man down the road – which is an area the program has been lacking.

Vinny Anthony has the makings of a nice possession receiver for UW, and has the quickness and size to play either inside or out on the boundary.

Conclusion:

I am a fan of these additions to the wide receiver room, however, it’s impossible to know what they’ve got right now. Both are high risk, high reward type of players at this point – but sometimes that’s what you’re going to have to shoot for to find a Cephus level difference maker in the passing game.

Wisconsin is never going to be a destination school for a wide receiver, but they got two players here with good size and athleticism.

WATCH: Wisconsin commit Tommy McIntosh reels in a long touchdown

Wisconsin commits and targets in both the class of 2022 and beyond are beginning to take the field for their 2021 football seasons.

Though the Badgers themselves don’t play until next Saturday, there are some future Badgers to monitor each week.

This week the spotlight turns to class of 2022 commit Tommy McIntosh, as he connected with his quarterback for a long touchdown during a game yesterday.

McIntosh is the No. 7-ranked commit in Wisconsin’s class of 2022 according to 247Sports, and stands No. 777 in the nation, No. 112 at his position and No. 19 from his home state of Michigan.

Wisconsin’s class as a whole sits No. 47 in the country and No. 11 in the Big Ten at this point in the recruiting process, though there are a lot of big names still out there that have yet to commit.

Wisconsin adds 2022 WR Tommy McIntosh to their fast-growing class of 2022

After the months of January to June saw only one player committed to Wisconsin’s class of 2022, the Badgers have gone on a commitment

After the months of January to June saw only one player committed to Wisconsin’s class of 2022, the Badgers have gone on a commitment tear in the last week.

OT Barrett Nelson committed on June 19, CB A’Khoury Lyde, TE J.T. Seagreaves and ATH Cade Yacamelli all committed on June 21 and now there is a sixth member of the class.

It’s three-star wide receiver and Michigan native Tommy McIntosh.

Wisconsin finished on top of a loaded top 6 for the wide receiver, those other top schools being Iowa, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati, Indiana and Wade Forest.

McIntosh is 247Sports’ No. 822 player in the class of 2022, No. 109 wide receiver and No. 22 recruit from his home state of Michigan.

The 6-foot, 5-inch pass-catcher is Wisconsin’s first wide receiver commit in the class and continues what has been a red-hot week of commitments in their class of 2022.

Wisconsin football continued their class of 2022 recruiting push yesterday, offering fast-rising three-star wide receiver Tommy McIntosh

Wisconsin football continued its class of 2022 recruiting push yesterday, offering fast-rising three-star wide receiver Tommy McIntosh.

McIntosh is 247Sports‘ No. 148 wide receiver in the class of 2022 and No. 30 recruit from his home state of Michigan.

The 6-foot, 4-inch receiver picked up an offer from Vanderbilt last week and has since added ones from Indiana and Wisconsin. Aside from those three schools that recently offered, McIntosh’s offer sheet is full of Ivy League and non-Power Five programs.

Wisconsin still has only three-star quarterback Myles Burkett committed to their class of 2022, though the group doesn’t figure to top the program’s class of 2021 given how many seniors decided to return for another season.
