Two Huskers make list of greatest bowl performances of all time

A recent list named the 25 best individual bowl performances of all time, and two Nebraska Cornhuskers have made the cut.

A recent list named the 25 best individual bowl performances of all time, and two Nebraska Cornhuskers have made the cut. Yardbarker‘s Jeff Mezydlo put together the list in question.

The first Husker listed is Johnny Rodgers during the 1973 Orange Bowl. The two-time defending national champion Cornhuskers faced the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in what was Nebraska’s third consecutive Orange Bowl.

Rodgers, who had just won the Heisman Trophy, would score four touchdowns as well as throw for a score in Nebraska’s 40-6 victory over Notre Dame.

Nebraska’s first Heisman winner would have 15 carries for 84 yards and three touchdowns. He would also make three catches for 71 yards and a score while throwing one pass for 52 yards and a touchdown.

The second Husker is Tommie Frazier in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl. The quarterback helped lead the Huskers to a second straight national championship, defeating Florida 62-24.

Frazier would throw for 105 yards and a touchdown while running for a career-high 199 yards and two touchdowns. You can find highlights of the two performances and more below.

Husker legends named to Bleacher Reports All-Time player list

Under the new leadership of Matt Rhule, Nebraska is looking to go back to the days when they were among the top programs in the country.

Under the new leadership of Matt Rhule, Nebraska is looking to go back to the days when they were among the top programs in the country. You have to go back to 2012 as the last time the Huskers competed for a conference title.

In fact, Nebraska hasn’t won a conference title since 1999. Since the days of Bo Pelini, who never posted a season below nine wins, Nebraska has only reached that mark once.

The current run of mediocrity and below-average play highlights how far off the Huskers are today compared to where they rank in the history books. In Bleacher Reports’ top-30 players all-time, they included four Huskers legends. Of the top 30 players, Nebraska fields the second most players.

The last 30 opening day quarterbacks for Nebraska

Take a trip down memory lane!!

We’re officially under 55 days till the start of the college football season. Nebraska will be heading across the Atlantic to Dublin, Ireland, to take on the Northwestern Wildcats in a European Big Ten battle. As we’re all aware, the Huskers have added several new coaches after last season’s disappointing 3-9 campaign in 2021. Scott Frost and company have also added a couple of new quarterbacks to the team via the transfer portal, Casey Thompson (Texas) & Chubba Purdy (Florida State) after the transfer of four-year starter Adrian Martinez (Kansas State). It appears that Thompson will be starting under center (or in the shotgun) in the Week 0 clash in Europe.

If Thompson is the starter, he will join a storied history of Nebraska opening day quarterbacks. The program features QBs that have won the Heisman, the Walter Camp Trophy, the Davey O’Brien Award, and the Johnny Unitas Award. Below is a list of the last 30 opening-day quarterbacks for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. I’ll be honest. There were a few names that I had forgotten were once starters for the Huskers, but the list does contain a few memorable players and Nebraska football legends.

All-Time bowl performances, is Joe Burrow’s touchdown barage on the list?

Is Joe Burrow’s Peach Bowl performance the best in bowl history?

The 2021 LSU Tigers weren’t anywhere near where we thought they would be. However, over the years we have seen some memorable performances in the postseason. The 2019 season alone had plenty of them.

When it comes to the greatest performances in bowl season history, where do you put Joe Burrow’s seven-touchdown explosion against the Oklahoma Sooners?

The game was over by halftime as the team led 49-14 in the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Peach Bowl. Justin Jefferson was the receiving end of four touchdown passes. You might argue that Jefferson should have been on the list after 14 receptions for 227 yards. He averaged 16.2 yards per reception in that game. Terrace Marshall Jr caught two touchdown passes and Thaddeus Moss had the other. What is even more impressive was Burrow doing it in a single half.

The Athletic (subscription required) ranked Burrow’s performance as No. 3 on their top 25 list. It only trailed Nebraska’s Tommie Frazier in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl and Vince Young’s performance against USC in the 2005 BCS Championship game in the Rose Bowl. Not bad company for the 2019 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback.

LSU had arguably the greatest offense in college football history in 2019, and in no game was that on better display than in a 63-28 College Football Playoff semifinal rout of Oklahoma. In his first game after winning the Heisman Trophy, Burrow completed 29 of 39 passes for 493 yards and seven touchdowns, in addition to rushing for a touchdown.

He completed 10 of 13 passes for 237 yards in the second quarter alone, and all seven of his TD passes came in the first half as the Tigers took a 49-14 lead into the locker room.

Burrow went on to lead the Tigers to the national championship against the Clemson Tigers in New Orleans. After falling behind 17-7 to the Tigers, LSU outscored Clemson 35-8 in the final 37 minutes of the game to finish off the perfect 15-0 campaign.
