Tom Brady Sr. did not like this one quality in Bill Belichick

Did Bill Belichick have an ego problem when it came to Tom Brady?

Tom Brady Sr. does not deny Bill Belichick’s football greatness. However, he is calling the former New England Patriots coach out on what he believes was an ego.

There may be something to this, as the coach only had one coaching interview after parting ways with the Patriots organization. That’s not to discredit his time with the Patriots. After all, he was the de facto general manager and coach since the 2000 season. During that time, the Patriots built one of the greatest modern dynasties in NFL history, winning six championships.

Even still, Brady Sr. believes one quality of Belichick’s hurt the coach the most, as told to the Boston Globe’s Christopher Gasper, via NESN.com’s Adam London, earlier this week.

“How many times has he said — back in ‘15 or ‘16 — that he wanted to win without Tommy? When he went without Tommy, he didn’t know what he was losing. You’re losing more than just a quarterback,” Brady Sr. said.

“Ego sometimes gets in the way of things. I think it did with Bill. Now, he’s in a situation where he’s gotten crucified for the last few years by everybody and a lot of luster has come off his rose.”

It’s certainly interesting to hear the perspective of someone who was closer to the Patriots’ organization than most. Regardless of personal opinion, it’s hard to argue with the results.

Tom Brady Sr. reveals Robert Kraft admission that Patriots made mistake letting Tom Brady leave

Tom Brady Sr. reveals a shocking admission from Patriots owner Robert Kraft

The New England Patriots have not made many on-field mistakes over the last decade and a half. However, owner Robert Kraft admitted he made one mistake back in September, during the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tom Brady’s family made the trip to Gillette Stadium to see the seven-time Super Bowl champion honored on the field at halftime. It was quite the celebratory day with Brady running onto the field and speaking to the fans. New England ended up losing the game by a 32-29 score. However, Brady’s presence alone electrified the building.

It was during that day that Kraft admitted a mistake he made to Tom Brady Sr., as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London.

“He just said, ‘I made a mistake.’ He told us that back in September,” Tom Brady Sr. told The Boston Globe’s Christopher Gasper. “We don’t all make the right decisions, but he’s made a hell of a lot of good ones over the years. But I know that it galls him that Tommy went elsewhere and won. Not that he won, but that he won after Bill (Belichick) said he was done.”

Imagine what life would have been like for the Patriots if Brady never left the team. An argument could be made that the legendary quarterback was ultimately better off for it considering he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won a Super Bowl on a completely new team in his first season.

Tom Brady Sr. calls Bill Belichick’s interpersonal skills ‘horrible’

Tom Brady Sr. acknowledged Bill Belichick’s greatness, but he also criticized the legendary coach’s interpersonal skills

Former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had tremendous success under coach Bill Belichick, and the two ended up forming one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history.

However, there was one aspect of Bill Belichick’s coaching style that Brady’s father, Tom Brady Sr., did not enjoy.

Belichick is known for being a tight-lipped coach, and that has given him a reputation of being tough to play for. This could be part of the reason why the 71-year-old coach has not been coveted during this coaching cycle.

The Atlanta Falcons were the only team he interviewed for as a head coach, and that job went to former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris instead.

Brady Sr. spoke with the Boston Globe’s Christopher Gasper and revealed one quality that he did not like of Belichick’s, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London.

“Bill is tough,” Brady Sr. told Gasper. “He runs a military system. It’s a different generation. Bill is a great, great, great coach. But his interpersonal skills are horrible. That’s the bottom line.”

It’s hard to argue with the results Belichick put forth during the Tom Brady era. However, the post-Brady era was a little less rosy for Belichick.

Nevertheless, the coach has been consistent with his style since Day 1, and that ultimately led him to six Super Bowls and an all-time great dynasty.

Tom Brady and his father discuss the QBs final chapter with the Patriots

Tom Brady Sr.: “It became pretty obvious that he needed to make a change. It was wearing him down. It was beating him up.”

Tom Brady clearly wasn’t happy with the New England Patriots when he made his move down south to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brady and Bill Belichick were good at covering up the tension for the most part, but it was clear to everyone that the relationship needed some distance. So, the legendary quarterback took a trip to Tampa and hasn’t looked back since.

The most intriguing piece in the situation was Brady’s feelings toward the Patriots and what ultimately pushed him out. In the finale of ESPN’s “Man in the Arena,” Brady barely touched on the topic — but, it was enough to explain where he was at emotionally at the time.

NESN’s Dakota Randall detailed the most important quotes regarding Brady’s exit.

Brady: “I kinda had been through a personal journey, where I was maturing in different ways and different things were becoming priorities in my life. I knew things were coming to an end.”

Brady Sr.: “The only thing we want from our kids is to be happy. It became pretty obvious that he needed to make a change. It was wearing him down. It was beating him up.”

Brady then went on to discuss the “hamster wheel” and explain why he chose to return from retirement.

“I realize life for me has become more complicated,” Brady said. “How do I make my life a little more simple, to find a little more joy in the simple moments? Because I’m so excited about achieving more, it’s like the hamster wheel doesn’t stop. And, if you stop the hamster wheel, maybe there’s a fear that you won’t ever get back on. What’s going to bring me the joy as I move forward? …

“I know there’s time for me to be sitting in the stands, I know there’s time for me to be doing other things. But there’s still a desire to win. When you’re the man in the arena, there’s no thrill like that.”

His family is extremely important and Brady went into depth about being the best father he can be.

“When I think about being a dad, I think about (Tom Sr.),” Brady said. “Because of what my dad meant to me, and I know I’m not as good of a dad to my kids (as) my dad has been to me. I use them as my example of how to keep a family together and to care and support and to love. We want our kids to be happy. I want them to be respectful of people. I want them to be kind. I want them to make the world a better place.

“I think maybe what I wish for our children is to find something they really love like I have. But I think I’ve taken it to the extreme, too. There are imbalances in my life, and I hope they don?t take things as far as I’ve taken them. I want them to experience great success in whatever they do, but there’s a torment about me that I don’t wish upon them.”

This finale episode will air on April 26.

Tom Brady Sr. opens up about son’s decision to return to NFL

Tom Brady Sr. spoke about his son’s return.

Tom Brady announced he was coming back for a 23rd season on Sunday afternoon and his father, Tom Brady Sr. spoke to the media about his son’s decision shortly thereafter.

The younger Brady is coming off a season in which he threw for 5,316 yards, 43 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The passing yards were a career-high, and the touchdowns were the most he threw in a season since 2007. He finished second in the MVP voting last season.

As transcribed by CBSBoston.com on Monday morning, the elder Brady opened up about his son’s decision to return to the game.

“Upon reflection and spending time with his family and stuff, he’s happy and we in the family are happy. We’ll be more than happy, we’re all elated and it’s going to be a wonderful, one more year. He’s said all along ‘I’m going to play until 45,’ but I’m not sure that it’s so much the 45 as he just loves playing football,” Tom Brady Sr. told WBZ-TV’s Steve Burton.

“He had a heck of a good year this last year and you know once you give it up you don’t come back, there’s no semi-retirement in football so he can’t coast into retirement and I just don’t think that he was ready. He thinks he can do the job,” Brady, Sr. said.

With Brady entering his third season in Tampa Bay, he already is making his mark in the Buccaneers ‘record books. He is seventh overall in passing yards (9,949), second overall in touchdowns (83), and first overall in the average yards per game (301.5). He will get another shot to improve upon those marks.

Tom Brady Sr. strongly believes Bill Belichick wanted his son out of New England

There isn’t a doubt in Tom Brady’s fathers’ eyes.

There was clearly tension between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick during the quarterback’s final seasons with the New England Patriots.

Brady would give subtle jabs regarding their relationship and the Seth Wickersham piece broke the story wide open. This likely was the reason Brady left in his forties to pursue an opportunity in free agency — which ended up working out tremendously. Brady had 40 touchdowns in the regular season last year and he won four post-season games to secure the Super Bowl win.

While speaking with NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran on The Patriots Talk podcast, Tom Brady’s father opened up about the 2020 offseason.

“Damn right,” Brady Sr. said. “Damn right. Belichick wanted him out the door and last year he threw 56 touchdowns. I think that’s a pretty good year.”

He was asked if Brady felt the same way.

“Damn right,” he said.

He couldn’t go without showing appreciation for his son’s time with the Patriots that ended with a 20-year dynasty that produced six Super Bowl wins.

“Tommy is extraordinarily appreciative of everything that happened during his New England career, and he’s more than happy that he’s moved on because it was pretty obvious that the Patriot regime felt that it was time for him to move on. And frankly, it may well have been perfect for Belichick to move on from him,” he said. “On the other hand, I think the Tampa Bay Bucs are pretty happy that the decision was made in Foxboro that they didn’t want to afford him or didn’t want to keep him when his last contract came up.”

The city wasn’t the issue for Brady Sr., it was primarily the relationship between his son and Belichick.

“That was our home for 20 years,” Brady Sr. said. “The fans embraced Tommy, the city embraced Tommy and the team embraced Tommy for a while. And so, when he comes home it’s gonna be a real treat that he spent 20 years making his mark in Boston. We owe a lot to the Patriots and a lot to Boston.

“Like every phase in life, things move on. Our kids get older, our kids move on. They move out of the house, they go elsewhere. And that’s kind of what it’s like for Tommy right now where he’s moved elsewhere and wherever he is, we support our kids, and Tommy’s no different than the rest of us.”

Tom Brady Sr. had an epic reaction to seeing the Patriots-Buccaneers matchup

Goodness! The trash has already begun.

Tom Brady is generally measured and careful in how he speaks to the media. Tom Brady Sr. is not.

And it’s awesome.

Because while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback has yet to address the fact that he’s playing against Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots in Week 4 during the 2021 season, Brady Sr. went out of his way to call into Boston sports radio to talk some trash.

“I started salivating when I saw that we’re playing the Patriots in the fourth game of the season, and we’re coming up here to make our record 4-0,” Brady Sr. told the “Zolak and Bertrand” show on 98.5 The Sports Hub on Thursday. “The Patriots are our second favorite team. It’s a game where we get to root against nobody. We get to root for the Patriots, but our most favorite team, of course, is the Buccaneers, so we expect to beat the Patriots rather handily, frankly.”

I. Am. Hyped.

Tom Brady Sr.? Also HYPED.

The fanbases in New England and Tampa? If ticket prices are any indication, those fans are HYPPPPPPEDDDDD.

Brady and Belichick, the greatest of all time at their respective positions, will square off for the first time after working together for 20 years. In their only year apart, Brady won a Super Bowl and Belichick logged his first losing season since his first year as a coach in New England in 2000.

It may be their only matchup against one another. If Brady logs a win, he will have beaten every NFL team at least once. And if Brady averages 288.5 passing yards per game through Week 4, he will also move into first place on the all-time passing list.

Legacies are on the line. The matchup should be absolutely wild.
