Patrick Beverley wants Bill Walton award for announcers

This would be a cool tribute.

We are a couple of weeks removed from the death of former UCLA Bruins basketball legend Bill Walton. The discussions of Walton are still coming in. Patrick Beveley was on his PatBevPod and was asked about the best announcers in the game of basketball.

Beverley put Walton at the top of his list, and had this to say about the legendary big man:

“Bill Walton. I think it should be a Bill Walton award. For the best announcer of the year.”

Beverley went to Doris Burke second on his list, Mike Breen was third, Kevin Harlan came in fourth and Hubie Brown rounded out the list.

Walton passed away at the age of 71 on May 27th, 2024. Walton played his College Basketball at UCLA from 1971-1974. He then was the first overall draft pick in the 1974 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. During his time at UCLA, he won two national titles and was part of an amazing 88 game winning streak.

Chiefs S Deon Bush’s second introductory tweet attempt had great timing

New #Chiefs S Deon Bush’s second introductory tweet showcased impeccable timing once again.

Kansas City Chiefs S Deon Bush has shown a knack for great (and comedic) timing in his first week with his new team.

Bush won the day on social media on Wednesday, March 23, sending out an introductory tweet when Chiefs fans were just finding out the news that Tyreek Hill was set to be traded to the Miami Dolphins. Bush had signed with the team earlier that day and wanted to reach out to the fans, but little did he know about the chaos set to ensue. Some of the responses he received from Chiefs Kingdom weren’t the most welcoming, prompting a follow-up tweet.

Now, days later, Bush tried again at sending an introductory tweet to Chiefs fans. His .gif choice shows his hesitation.

The great thing about this tweet is that it too had incredible timing. Moments before the tweet was sent, Chiefs fans had just learned that much-maligned veteran safety Daniel Sorensen had signed a free-agent deal with the New Orleans Saints. Fans called for Sorensen’s benching in 2021 and they’re happy to see him move onto another club.

This time around, Chiefs Kingdom was much more welcoming of their newest safety.

He even managed a response from one of Chiefs Kingdom’s own celebrity fans, who offered some great encouragement.

One of Bush’s new running mates in the secondary even assured him that it’s safe now.

Former Penn State basketball coach Pat Chambers has a new job

Former Penn State basketball coach Pat Chambers has landed a new job as a head coach

For some, this is the best time of the year in college basketball with the NCAA Tournament kicking off this week. For others, the coaching carousel has officially begun around the country with a number of coaches losing their jobs, and others quickly finding new job opportunities.

Among those latching on to a new job as the spinning coaching carousel hits its stride is Pat Chambers, who was relieved of his coaching duties at Penn State prior to the 2020-21 season. Chambers has officially been introduced as the new head coach of Florida Gulf Coast University. Chambers, who accumulated a head coaching record of 148-150 in nine seasons as Penn State’s head coach, reflected on the opportunity to be a head coach again after previously being relieved of his duties at Penn State two years ago. Chambers was removed as head coach following an investigation into allegations of mishandling his treatment of players.

The last 18 months I’ve been continuing to grow and educate and self-reflect,” Chambers said at his introductory press conference on Tuesday, according to a release from the school. “I’m confident that you, my next team, my players, my future players, you’ll be getting the best leader, best teacher and best coach because I’ve learned a lot from my past. I promise you that. I’m confident in that.”

Chambers served as an assistant at LaSalle for the 2021-22 season. Chambers previously had two seasons of head coaching experience at Boston and he served on the Villanova coaching staff under Jay Wright.

While Chambers does have a losing record at Penn State, it is unfair to neglect the results Penn State had on the court in his final season as the head coach. Penn State put together a 21-10 record in 2019-20 and were on track for a spot in the NCAA Tournament for just the fourth time since joining the Big Ten in 1993. But that season was cut short prematurely as the NCAA shut down the tournament before it even got started amid the COVID-19 pandemic’s earlier days impacting the world of sports. Chambers also coached Penn State to an NIT title two seasons before that.

Patriots’ lessons still resonate with newly-hired Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell

Kevin O’Connell still values lessons learned in New England.

As he gets set to take his first head coaching job with the Minnesota Vikings, former New England Patriots quarterback Kevin O’Connell is impressed with the lessons he learned with the Patriots.

O’Connell was drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2008 NFL draft. However, he failed to find any major success. He appeared in two games for the Patriots before being released by the team in 2009.

O’Connell bounced around from team to team throughout the course of his career. Playing for six teams in total, he last was a part of an NFL roster in 2012, as he was signed by the San Diego Chargers to serve backup duties.

Despite limited time in New England, he is still taking lessons he learned with the Patriots as he ascends from Rams offensive coordinator to Vikings coach. Those lessons left a lasting impression, O’Connell told the media during Super Bowl week.

“The ability to week-in and week-out prepare a football team for how they’re going to go about going out and trying to win a football game against different opponents and different challenges — because every single week in this league, it is really hard to win football games — able to center the focus of the team in all three phases to go out and really execute game plans week-in, week-out. Short week, long week, coming off a bye, whatever it was.”

Now O’Connell will be tasked with taking over a Minnesota Vikings team that, despite recent struggles, has playmakers. With Minnesota looking to turn the corner, structure and preparation may be just what they need to succeed.

Spurs at Rockets: Lineups, injury reports, broadcast and stream info for Tuesday

After an intense matchup two weeks ago, Seattle natives and longtime friends Dejounte Murray and Kevin Porter Jr. will meet again when the Rockets host the Spurs on Tuesday.

The Houston Rockets kick off a four-game homestand with Tuesday’s visit from in-state rival San Antonio, and if you’re wondering how you can watch all the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

Houston enters with momentum on the back of a strong road trip, where they went 3-2 — with one of the lone losses at the buzzer to Golden State courtesy of a Steph Curry buzzer-beater. Now, the challenge is to find that form at Toyota Center, where they haven’t won since Dec. 8.

The Rockets defeated the Spurs earlier this month in San Antonio, but the home team was short-handed that night due to health and safety protocols absences, including starting guard Derrick White. This time, the Spurs have a clean injury report for the rematch, and they’re hoping to break out of a recent skid in which they’ve lost 12 of 15 games, overall.

The key matchup could be Houston’s Kevin Porter Jr. versus San Antonio’s Dejounte Murray. Both are young, intensely competitive guards from the Seattle area who also happen to be close friends. Murray had the superior full-game statistics on Jan. 12, but Porter hit several dagger 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter as the Rockets pulled away to win.

With a win Tuesday, the Rockets would come within two games of the Spurs in the Western Conference standings. Both teams are currently outside of the West’s 10-team playoff picture by several games, including the play-in tournament for teams seeded at No. 7 through No. 10.

Nuggets at Rockets: Prediction, point spread, odds, over/under, betting picks

Denver is coming off a postponement, but the short-handed Nuggets are still favored over the host Rockets due largely to MVP Nikola Jokic.

The Houston Rockets will finish a three-game homestand with Saturday’s New Year’s Day visit from Denver, and if you’re looking to do some last-minute betting research, you’re in luck! We’ve got the latest point spread, money line odds and over/under number, as well as all the information you’ll need to make the smartest bets at Tipico Sportsbook.

The Rockets-Nuggets game tips at 7 p.m. CST and can be viewed or streamed via AT&T SportsNet Southwest and NBA League Pass.

For the Rockets, they will begin 2022 in a similar manner to how they ended 2021: Welcoming a health-ravaged opponent to Toyota Center.

This time, it’s Denver, which is coming off a postponement due to a lack of enough available players. Fortunately, barring a late increase in positive COVID-19 test results, the Nuggets have made enough temporary hardship additions that Saturday’s game should go forward.

Even though the Rockets have superior depth, given current health and injury lists, Denver (17-16) is the favored team for one very big reason: Reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic is healthy. By contrast, Houston (10-26) enters with six straight losses after Friday’s setback versus Miami.

It also remains to be seen how head coach Stephen Silas will navigate back-to-back considerations, since the Rockets also played on Friday’s New Year’s Eve. Earlier in the week, Houston rested guards Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green on half of a back-to-back, since each is coming off a leg injury that recently sidelined them for multiple weeks.

Then again, perhaps this back-to-back is different, since both games are in Houston (meaning no in-between travel) and both young guards have improved their conditioning since making their initial returns. Silas indicated Friday that he was hopeful of having Green and Porter available for both ends of this back-to-back, but that a final determination would not be made until evaluating them on Saturday.

Rockets at Hornets: Monday’s lineups, injury reports, broadcast and stream info

After having three days off over Christmas, Eric Gordon and the Rockets are back at it with Monday’s road matchup versus LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets.

When the Rockets faced the Hornets exactly one month ago in Houston, Christian Wood and Kevin Porter Jr. led the home team to a statement win over LaMelo Ball and Charlotte in what was ultimately the second victory of a long seven-game winning streak.

As a result, don’t expect the Hornets to take the Rockets lightly in Monday’s rematch from Charlotte, which should feature both teams having fresh legs after three full days of rest over Christmas.

But the Rockets are navigating a back-to-back, with another game looming Tuesday versus the Lakers in Houston. Thus, they may need to be mindful of maintenance considerations, particularly for players like Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. who are recently coming off injuries.
