Watch: Notre Dame cornerback commit Jaden Mickey wins 100-meter race

A Notre Dame commit is quite the versatile athlete.

Cornerbacks have to be some of the speediest guys on the football field. A month ago, Notre Dame got a good one in four-star recruit Jaden Mickey. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising, but among the ways Mickey stays in shape is by running track for Centennial in Corona, California. It turns out he’s pretty good at that, too, as the Class of 2026 commit won this 100-meter race:

This isn’t something Mickey just recently picked up either. In 2016, he competed for Eastvale Elementary as a sixth-grader in the CNUSD Junior Olympics, during which he took part in the 200, long jump and 4×100 relay. This spring, he will run the 100 and 200 for Centennial.

Most of Notre Dame’s current cornerback corps still will be around when Mickey arrives in South Bend for the 2022 season. He’ll be joining a group that will be incredibly tight-knit by then if it’s not already. Talk about a great opportunity to learn the ropes.

Suns vs. Celtics: Live stream, lineups, injury reports and broadcast info for 4/22

Everything you need to know for Thursday night’s tilt with Phoenix.

The Boston Celtics play the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, April 22, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The East’s sixth-place Celtics get back on the court after their first break of consecutive days in weeks to try to get back in the win column against a good Western Conference team down several key players at TD Garden. At the same time, the West’s second-place Suns have won eight of their last 10 games and hope to add another to that total in what would be their second win in a row.

Boston will have their work cut out for them, even with the advantage the small hometown crowd provides.

Draft Wire’s Top-300: Where do Notre Dame players rank?

What teams are you hoping Notre Dame’s draft prospects end up playing for?

The NFL draft is just over a week away and once it comes we’ll finally live in a world of knowing where the top league prospects will be playing instead of simply projecting where they may go and how they may fit.

With that said, the fun in the draft comes in the hours and hours that are spent projecting and mocking what could happen while knowing full-well that things almost certainly won’t go how almost all of the experts actually expect.

Our colleagues over at Draft Wire have put together their NFL draft board and ranked the top-300 prospects from 1-300.  Here is where they had nine Notre Dame players ranked:

No. 1 Oklahoma suffers first loss of season, then bounces back to split doubleheader against No. 21 Georgia

No. 1 Oklahoma suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday night before taking Game 2 to split a doubleheader with No. 21 Georgia.

No. 1 Oklahoma softball got back to action on Tuesday night putting their undefeated season on the line in a doubleheader against No. 21 Georgia in Athens.

The Sooners have had an incredible season to date and have looked to be next to unstoppable throughout the year, but to remain unblemished is something very difficult to do for a long stretch of time in college softball. Patty Gasso’s club found that out themselves splitting the doubleheader with the Bulldogs to take their first loss of the year and end their undefeated season bid at 33 straight wins to open the year.

The loss came in the first game of the evening in a very back and forth affair that needed extra frames to determine a winner. Getting the start for Oklahoma was ace pitcher Giselle Juarez who was effective over her five innings allowing just two runs and striking out seven.

The first run of the game would come from the Sooners in the second inning on a solo home run by Grace Lyons. After both teams came up empty in the third, the game remained 1-0 Oklahoma into the fourth inning.

It was that point that Juarez would run into her only trouble of the day allowing first a solo home run by Sydney Kuma to tie things up at 1-1. Then, in a very peculiar play, the Bulldogs’ Jaiden Fields launched an apparent two-run home run to give Georgia the lead but she inexplicably didn’t touch home plate when coming around the bases. Because of that, only one run counted and it was a 2-1 game through four frames.

What appeared to be one of the very biggest hits of the Sooners’ season would come later on in the sixth with Lynnsie Elam at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. With her team’s undefeated record in serious jeopardy, Elam sent a grand slam over the left center fence to give Oklahoma a 5-2 lead and seemingly put the dagger in the Bulldogs.

But, to Georgia’s credit, they kept battling. Fields would come through with a two-run single in the bottom half of the inning to trim the lead down to one. Then, after the Sooners added another run to their lead in the top of the seventh, Kuma and Sara Mosley would pick up run-scoring hits in the bottom half of the frame to knot things up at 6-6 and send the game into extras.

Both teams would be turned away empty in the eighth and Oklahoma would be again in the top of the ninth, needing freshman pitcher Nicole May to try and keep the game moving into a tenth inning. But, after picking up some key outs, May would not be able to quite to shut the door as Fields came through with another massive hit – this one a two-out, walk-off single to hand the Sooners their first loss of the 2021 season.

In the second game, Oklahoma played a lot like a team that took some frustration in suffering their first defeat of the year as they pounded the Bulldogs to the tune of a 12-3 run-rule victory.

Shannon Saile got the start and did a very nice job tossing three shutout innings allowing just a single hit. While she kept the Georgia bats quiet, the Sooners bats were having a field day.

Oklahoma put up five runs in the first across three hits from Lyons, Jayda Coleman, and Mackenzie Donihoo. They then tacked on three more in the second on bases loaded walks drawn by Coleman and Donihoo along with an RBI-single from Elam. The Sooners led 8-0 after two frames.

Gasso’s squad kept it rolling in the third with four more runs coming from the same group of Lyons, Coleman and Donihoo. Oklahoma held a commanding 12-0 advantage after only three turns at bat.

After an empty trip to the plate in the top of the fourth, redshirt sophomore Brooke Vestal would toss a scoreless inning to push the Sooners to just three outs away from the run-rule win. Sophomore Alanna Thiede would be called upon do that in the bottom of the fifth with the score still 12-0, and would run into some trouble allowing a three-run homer.

But, that wouldn’t be enough for the Bulldogs to extend the game as Thiede would hold things there for Oklahoma to get the 12-3 victory. Amazingly, it is the team’s 26th run-rule win of the season – which is beyond absurd.

The split doubleheader brings the Sooners’ overall record to 34-1 on the year. While it will certainly sting to have the zero in the loss column wiped away, it doesn’t have much effect on Oklahoma’s perception or their long term goals. They are still an elite team in every facet of the game and one loss in by no means changes that even slightly.

The Sooners will now take a couple days away from game action before starting a three-game weekend series with Texas Tech in Norman on Friday night.

Top Instate 2022 defensive tackle includes Notre Dame in latest update

The Irish move on with top instate defensive tackle

When there is a top talent in your backyard that is getting recruited by some of the best schools in the county, you to keep that recruit home. Last year, Notre Dame accomplished that mission, as they signed Blake Fisher, who by all accounts has been one of the most impressive early enrollees.

[lawrence-related id=27720]

That was the 2021 class, and with the focus on the 2022 cycle, in steps Greenwood defensive tackle Caden Curry. The Irish have already received a commit from instate tackle Joey Tanona, one of the best in the country as well.

[listicle id=17189]

The rising senior cut his list to 12 schools, with the Irish still in contention.

The main competition out of his top-12 seem to be the perennial powers Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. The most recent four College Football Playoff participants will battle it out for Curry’s commitment.

There will surely be more cut downs of Curry’s lists and it seems like head coach Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman would like to keep him home.

Notre Dame in 2022 NCAA Tournament per Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology

Think the Irish can make the next NCAA Tournament?

Yes, it’s way too early to be thinking about the 2022 NCAA Tournament, but that hasn’t stopped college basketball fans from doing so. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi is one of them, and he’s released his latest Bracketology. Notre Dame fans undoubtedly want to forget about the 11-15 season they just experienced, but they’ll be pleased to know that Lunardi has the next iteration of the Irish as one of the last teams to make the tournament without having to play in the First Four. Specifically, he lists the Irish as a No. 10 seed against Indiana, so maybe the Crossroads Classic will serve as a preview for March?

Lunardi has good reason to be bullish about Notre Dame, which will receive a boost from Yale transfer Paul Atkinson and South Bend natives J.R. Konieczny and Blake Wesley. The Irish also will return their top three scorers from the past season as seniors: Prentiss Hubb, Nate Laszewski and Dane Goodwin. This is a program desperate for good things as it hasn’t made the Big Dance since 2017. Fortunately, there’s reason to think that those good things are close ahead.

Dabo Swinney gets booed at NBA game

They’re not woo-ing…

Love him or hate him, there are few greater characters in college football than Dabo Swinney.

He’s got a one-of-a-kind personality, is more than a little bit of a charmer, and he happens to win a lot of football games every year.

Swinney and Clemson have become fringe rivals with Notre Dame in recent years as the two have met four times since 2015 with the Tigers holding a 3-1 series advantage in that time.

All of that said, Dabo attending a basketball game at the closest NBA arena to Clemson, South Carolina didn’t protect him from fans booing his introduction.

I haven’t been able to find a video of the incident while searching online so who knows just how loud those boos actually were, but according to Steve Reed of the Associated Press, they were plenty audible.

Swinney has directed Clemson to 10-straight seasons of winning 10 or more games and has won a pair of national championships in that time.

As loud as some may boo, I don’t think it’s going to sting him too badly.

Pro Football Hall of Famer extremely high on Kyle Hamilton

Who is Notre Dame’s best defensive player over the last 30 years?

We’re not even through the 2021 NFL draft yet and we’re already getting some discussions about the 2022 edition.  One recent thought on the 2022 draft came from former Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt who is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Like any great mind, Brandt is thinking well ahead as he’s closed the book on the 2021 draft and is already looking ahead to 2022 as he released his top-five players for the 2022 edition.

At number two is a current Notre Dame star who is only entering his junior season but clearly has the ability to make the jump to the NFL.

Trailing only defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux of Oregon, Brandt ranks Fighting Irish safety Kyle Hamilton as the 2022 draft’s second-best player.

Based on the replies I think most people are struggling to understand he’s ranking the players, not projecting what number pick they’ll be selected at.

Hamilton is as good of safety as there is in the nation and clearly has an NFL body.  Although I don’t think there is a chance he’ll go second overall, if Hamilton does go in the top-10 when he’s eventually drafted he’d be the first Notre Dame defender taken that high since Bryant Young went seventh overall to the San Francisco 49ers in 1994.

Star linebacker sets Notre Dame visit date

A potentially great class of linebackers is developing

The recruiting world of college sports has been an even stranger one the past year as recruits have not been allowed to make official visits to college campuses due to the pandemic.  That will all finally change as last week the NCAA announced the recruiting dead period was coming to an end.

Several prospects have since made plans to officially visit Notre Dame and the coaching staff, but one of the biggest targets on Brian Kelly and the company’s board announced his plans on Tuesday.

Niuafe “Junior” Tuihalamaka, a former USC commitment and four-star linebacker in the 2022 recruiting class plans to make the trip to northern Indiana this June.

Tuihalamaka listed his five finalists back in early March as Notre Dame was joined by Texas, Oregon, Stanford, and Arizona State.

The Irish have an already strong linebacker class coming in 2022 that could easily be viewed as the nation’s best if they’re able to land Tuihalamaka.
