These are the six golfers who have won the Hawaii Double (Sentry, Sony) on PGA Tour

Chris Kirk now has a chance to join the short list.

The PGA Tour’s 2024 season is off and running.

The first event of the new year is in the books with Chris Kirk winning The Sentry on the Plantation course at Kapalua in Maui. He bested a field of 59 golfers who vied for a $20 million prize in the first signature event of the new year.

With that victory, Kirk now has a chance to join a short list of golfers who have put the career Hawaii double dip on their resumes.

Here’s a closer look at the six golfers who have won both The Sentry and the Sony Open in Hawaii.

The 38-year-old won the 2024 The Sentry at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Hawaii at 29 under after an 8-under 65 on Sunday. The win is the sixth of his PGA Tour career and first since the 2023 Honda Classic last February.

For his efforts, Kirk will take home the top prize of $3.6 million. Sahith Theegala, who shot a 10-under 63 in the final round, finished second at 28 under and earned $2.16 million. Jordan Spieth finished third at 27 under and banked $1.36 million.

J.T. Poston robbed of eagle after wild bounce-out at The Sentry at Kapalua

J.T. Poston had an eventful Sunday at the 2024 Sentry.

J.T. Poston had an eventful Sunday at the 2024 Sentry. It was almost as if the golf gods had it out for him for some reason.

On the sixth hole, Poston burned the edge with a birdie putt from about five feet. On the par-3 eighth, he faced a birdie putt from less than three feet but caught the lip and missed.

Neither of those compared to what happened on the ninth hole. A par 5 playing 548 yards, Poston was 44 yards away for his third shot. He hit his approach dead online. It bounced once and then went into the cup … before it popped back out.

Poston would tap in for birdie but what a bad break for the Postman.

He later birdied the 14th hole, then drained an eagle putt from 44 feet on the par-5 15th, for what officially became his first eagle of the week.

“Always a great week. Great place to start, obviously, here in Maui,” he said after his 8-under 65 round. “As far as the golf goes, there’s a lot of birdie out there, especially today.”

Poston’s 25-under total was good for a tie for fifth, four shots back of winner Chris Kirk.

2024 The Sentry Sunday tee times, how to watch PGA Tour at Kapalua

Everything you need to know for The Sentry’s final round.

The last time Chris Kirk played in The Sentry was 2016.

Last spring, Kirk won the Honda Classic and earned his way back into the field. And he has a chance to win after eight years away.

Kirk leads at 21-under 198 after three rounds at The Sentry at Kapalua’s Plantation Course in Hawaii. He shot 7-under 66 on Saturday and has a one-shot lead over 20-year-old Akshay Bhatia with 18 holes to play. There’s a trio at 19 under, including 2016 champion Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele.

Kapalua’s Plantation Course ranks No. 2 in Golfweek’s Best list of public-access courses in Hawaii, and it also is No. 39 on Golfweek’s Best list of modern courses in the U.S.

Akshay Bhatia’s broomstick, Chris Kirk’s momentous par save among 5 things to know from third round of The Sentry

What do the past three winners of The Sentry have in common? A hot putter.

Before the start of the 2023 Fortinet Championship, Akshay Bhatia switched to a broomstick putter, one similar that Lucas Glover used to win consecutive Tour events only a month before.

Bhatia, a 20-year-old who broke through for his first Tour victory at the Barracuda Championship last summer, had a strong rookie season outside of his putter. He knew something needed to change to be more consistent. He switched his flat stick for one round at the Fortinet Championship and three rounds at the RSM Classic. It has been in the bag again this week, and through three rounds of the 2024 season, it seems that switch is paying off.

After three rounds of the 2024 The Sentry at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii, Bhatia is sitting at 20-under 199, one shot behind leader Chris Kirk. However, the youngster is first in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

“I played nice today,” Bhatia said. “Didn’t make any mistakes. Made some putts. I wish I would have not 3-putted 18, and that’s what I’m going to think about, but it was a good day. We all played really well in the group. I’m looking forward to the opportunity tomorrow.”

As he mentioned, the lone blemish for Bhatia in his third-round 7-under 66 came on the closing par-5 18th, when he three putted for the first time this week. It resulted in a par, but nevertheless, Bhatia will be in the final pairing come Sunday’s final round.

“My caddie has been here plenty of times, and I’m relying on him,” he said. “Our game plan, we have a nice game plan of what holes we need to play conservatively, what holes we can attack, and then what holes we can just kind of plod around. If you make a couple birdies on the harder holes it’s a big jump, I think. Then, like you said, you got to make a lot of birdies. A lot of holes are birdieable, but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t.

“You just keep plotting around and hopefully you play this golf course more and more you get more comfortable on certain things. So, that’s kind of what I’m going about.”

Fans react to Kevin Kisner’s PGA Tour broadcasting debut at The Sentry in Hawaii

Safe to say fans love having Kisner in the booth.

Kevin Kisner struggled with his game last season, so he didn’t qualify for the first signature event of the year, The Sentry. However, Kisner did make the trip to Kapalua’s Plantation Course in Maui. Why?

To make his broadcasting debut with NBC.

Kisner has long been a fan favorite, known for his great sense of humor, incredible interview moments and lack of pretentious attitude that can be found with some on Tour.

His first appearance in the booth came during the second round Friday, and he’ll be back on the call Saturday and Sunday. NBC’s coverage over the weekend runs from 4-6 p.m. ET before Golf Channel/Peacock takes over until 8 p.m.

2024 The Sentry Saturday tee times, how to watch PGA Tour at Kapalua

Everything you need to know for The Sentry’s third round.

There’s a familiar face on top of the leaderboard after two rounds of the PGA Tour’s season-opening event, The Sentry at Kapalua in Hawaii.

Scottie Scheffler, the two-time reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year, shot 9-under 64 on Friday and is the solo leader after 36 holes in Maui, sitting at 16 under for the week. However, that cushion is over a big chasing pack, including three trailing by a shot: Tyrrell Hatton, who fired an 11-under 62 in the second round, Brendon Todd and Sungjae Im.

Chris Kirk, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa and Byeong Hun An are tied for fifth two shots behind.

Scottie Scheffler rolling his rock, Tyrrell Hatton’s ‘mad’ putting day among 5 things to know from the second round of The Sentry

Here’s everything you need to know from Friday’s second round at Kapalua.

Just two days after being named PGA Tour Player of the Year for the second straight year, Scottie Scheffler is staking an early claim to a three-peat of the Jack Nicklaus Award.

The 27-year-old World No. 1 shot 9-under 64 at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course on Friday in Kapalua, Hawaii, to take a one-stroke lead over Tyrrell Hatton, Sungjae Im and Brendon Todd at the midway point of the Sentry. He improved to a 36-hole total of 16-under 130, which marked the first time that Scheffler has posted 16-under par or better through two rounds.

Scheffler made his first – and so far only – bogey of the tournament at the second hole but bounced back with a birdie at the third and then holed a 25-foot eagle putt at the fifth. He tacked on two more birdies on the front nine and then reeled off four birdies in a row starting at No. 12. He circled his eighth birdie of the day at the last.

Scheffler, who won the Hero World Challenge in December, continues to show improvements in his putting since he started working with Phil Kenyon before the Ryder Cup in late September. Scheffler gained more than two strokes to the 59-man field on the greens on Friday. When he does that, he’s tough to beat. But leading after 36 holes hasn’t always been to Scheffler’s benefit. This marks the 10th time he’s held or been the co-leader after 36 holes on Tour and he’s converted just 2 of 9 to date, winning the 2022 Masters and 2023 WM Phoenix Open.

“Scores around this place are pretty low, but it’s one of those places if you go out there and play well you’re going to get rewarded. If you start not hitting it in the right spots, you can get in trouble,” he said. “Just got to keep the pedal down out here.”

The Aussie is bringing style to the course with Malbon.

On Jan. 2, Malbon Golf announced the signing of its first PGA Tour ambassador, Jason Day. The Aussie had been with Nike since 2016, but Day left the checkmark behind as the calendar flipped to 2024.

Malbon is a popular brand deeply embedded into the game of golf and strives to connect with the younger generation. One thing is certain — Malbon will bring lots of style to the Tour with its new deal with Day.

In December, the former world No. 1 teamed up with Lydia Ko to win the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational. Well, his good form made the trip with him to Hawaii as he posted an 8-under 65 Thursday to hold a share of second after the opening round of The Sentry at Kapalua’s Plantation Course.
