Andre Iguodala trades jokes with Steph Curry during golf round at ‘The Match III’

While Stephen Curry was on the course for “The Match III” golf competition, Andre Iguodala had a question for his former Warriors teammate.

On Friday, Steph Curry was in the tee box for “The Match III: Champions for Change.” The Golden State Warriors point guard rounded out a star-powered foursome that featured two-time Super Bowl-winning passer Peyton Manning, NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley and PGA Tour veteran Phil Mickelson.

In the third edition of the celebrity golf match, Curry and Manning teamed up against Barkley and Mickelson for 15 holes at Stone Canyon Golf Club in Oro Valley, Arizona, to help raise funds for Historically black colleges and universities around the country.

Along with the talented cast of golfers on the course, the group of analysts and commentators for the event had a familiar face for fans of the Warriors. Curry’s former teammate turned Miami Heat forward Andre Iguodala was featured on the broadcast.

With Iguodala on the mic, it didn’t take long for the pair of former teammates to start trading jokes. As Curry was driving the cart, the 2015 NBA Finals MVP had a question for his former teammate regarding his outfit choice for the round.

Despite his swagger on the course, it didn’t translate to his game. The Curry and Manning tandem fell to Mickelson and Barkley, 4-3 in the alternate scoring format. Although Curry wasn’t apart of the pairing that was crowned champion, the foursome was able to raise a whopping $5.455 million for HBCU programs.

Charles Barkley and Phil Mickelson defeat Steph Curry and Peyton Manning in ‘The Match III’

Despite being heavy favorites, Stephen Curry and Peyton Manning fell to Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley in “The Match III” golf round.

On Friday, instead of lacing up his basketball shoes, Steph Curry pulled out his golf clubs. Alongside Super Bowl-winning quarterback Peyton Manning, the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player competed in “The Match III: Champions for Change.”

The duo of Manning and Curry squared off against five-time PGA Major winner Phil Mickelson and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. Proceeds from the golf round benefitted Historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).

Despite playing the underdog role for the event, Mickelson and Barkley were able to put together a gritty performance against Curry and Manning. After Bogeying the first hole to fall behind, Mickelson and Barkley sunk back-to-back birdies to steal the lead. While Curry and Manning struggled with bogey golf, the tandem of Mickelson and Barkley pared four of the next five holes.

While Barkley’s hitched-up swing has become infamous, the NBA on TNT analyst played exceptionally well with the coaching of Mickelson on every hole at The Stone Canyon Club in Oro Valley, Arizona.

With a birdie on 15, Barkley and Mickelson were able to complete the upset victory, 4-3 in the alternate scoring format.

One of Curry’s best shots of the day came on the par-4 12th hole. The six-time All-Star nearly drilled a shot from the bunker, leaving it just inches from the hole.

However, just two holes earlier, Curry smoked a drive that skipped into the water hazard on the 10th hole.

Regardless of winners and losers, The Match III raised an incredible $5.455 million for HBCU programs.

Hole 1 – Curry, Manning lead, 1 up

Par 5, 426 yards

Chuck has a new swing he debuted on the first tee, surprising everyone. But it wasn’t enough the win the hole. Barkley missed a short par putt to tie the par-4 hole, giving way for Manning to make his putt for par. Team Manning/Curry lead 1 up through one.

Steph Curry training with Michelle Wie West before ‘The Match III’ golf competition

Before he tees up for The Match III with Phil Mickelson, Charles Barkeley and Peyton Manning, Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is training with Michell Wie West.

Before he returns to Chase Center for the Golden State Warriors preseason training camp, Stephen Curry will pick up his clubs for a star-studded round of golf.

On Friday, Curry will join legendary quarterback Peyton Manning, five-time golf major winner Phil Mickelson and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley for the third edition of “The Match: Champions for Charity.” Proceeds from the charity competition will benefit Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Curry will team up with Manning against Barkley and Mickelson. While linked with Tiger Woods in The Match II, Manning was part of the winner’s circle for the round.

To prepare for his round against Mickelson and Barkley tandem, Curry has been working on his golf game with Michell Wie West. Prior to the event, Wie West shared a video on Instagram featuring her and the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player teeing off. However, instead of using tees for their drives, Wie West and Curry used OXIGEN water bottles. Both Curry and Wie West are investors and partners with OXIGEN.

The Match III will begin at noon PST on Friday, Nov. 27, on TNT.

Looking to make a few bucks on Black Friday to make up for all you’re sure to spend on holiday presents?

Perhaps a wager on The Match III ā€” starring the teams of Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley vs. Steph Curry and Peyton Manning ā€” can help offset your gift losses.

Our Esten McLaren (of sister site sportsbookwire.com) said earlier this week that he’d put his money on the pairing of Mickelson and Barkley:

Stone Canyon is owned by Mickelson Golf Properties, giving the PGA Tour professional an even greater advantage. The odds here seem heavily skewed by Barkley and his infamous swing. The fact of the matter is, heā€™s a passionate golfer and isnā€™t nearly as bad as perceived to be.

And while the vast majority of tickets taken at MGM have followed McLaren’s line of thinking, the big money is coming in on the opposite side.

As of late Wednesday, over 68% of all bets placed at MGM were for the Mickelson/Barkley team. However, a deeper dive into the overall money being bet on both sides shows the exact opposite. The total money wagered is actually coming in on the team of Curry/Manning, to the tune of about 61%.

[vertical-gallery id=778045775]

What does this mean? Big-money bettors prefer Curry and Manning, who are currently -182 to win (it would take a $182 bet on Curry and Manning to fetch a profit of $100).

Of course, setting the lines on an event like this, in which there are so many uncertainties, is difficult for oddsmakers.

ā€œNovelty events, like The Match III, are challenging for bookmakers to price without any real data to base lines on. The only advantage that sportsbooks have is that it is equally difficult for bettors to handicap the event,ā€ said Jason Scott, the VP of Trading for BetMGM.

There are also a number of interesting prop bets for this event at Stone Canyon, just north of Tucson, Arizona.

For example, who will win the first hole?

The par 4 is a dogleg left and oddsmakers don’t think it favors either side. The odds of a tie are -110 while Mickelson-Barkley are +300 and Curry-Manning: +175.

Conversely, oddsmakers think Curry and Manning will be ahead by the turn as the odds on who will lead after nine holes are:
ā€¢ Mickelson-Barkley: +190
ā€¢ Curry-Manning: -125
ā€¢ Tie: +400

Peyton Manning heckles Phil Mickelson, calls out Tom Brady ahead of The Match: Champions for Change

Peyton Manning heckled Phil Mickelson and called out Tom Brady ahead of The Match: Champions for Change.

Aside from one incredible shot – that followed with his pants ripping – Tom Brady wasn’t much of a help to partner Phil Mickelson during The Match: Champions for Charity earlier this year.

Ahead of The Match’s third go around, The Match: Champions for Change at at Stone Canyon in Oro Valley, Arizona, the five-time major champion said his new partner, Charles Barkley, was an upgrade. That caught Peyton Manning’s attention, who defeated Mickelson and Brady alongside Tiger Woods at Medalist Golf Club in May. This time around, Manning will tee it up with two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry.

ā€œIf Iā€™m a certain quarterback down in Tampa, I donā€™t know how to take that,ā€ said Manning, who referred to The Match II where Barkley was an analyst and had some fun at Bradyā€™s expense. ā€œI see Tom tweeting a little bit during this match, especially if Charles finds a piece of desert or cactus. I see a certain tweet coming out of one Tom Brady.ā€

The event, televised live on TNT on Friday, Nov. 27 at 3 p.m. ET, is contributing toward and highlighting diversity, equality and inclusion at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), while also providing meals through Feeding America this holiday season.

Charles Barkley Q&A: On hypnosis, who’s the best trash talker in golf and his most embarrassing golf moment

Charles Barkley calls himself the wild card in The Match: Champions for Change. Check out more of Barkley’s golf takes in this Q&A.

Charles Barkley, 57, has a golf swing not even a mother could love.

As Jackie Chiles, the fast-talking lawyer of Seinfeld fame who describes everything with a series of adjectives, would put it, Barkley’s swing is ungainly, unwieldy and downright repugnant. But the round mound of rebound gets to pair up with five-time major winner Phil Mickelson in a made-for-TV exhibition against NFL great Peyton Manning and NBA star Stephen Curry in a modified-alternate-shot match play scheduled for Friday, Nov. 27 at 3 p.m. EST on TNT. Gather round with your Thanksgiving leftovers because Barkley is either going to shock us with his improved play or we won’t be able to take our eyes off the train wreck.

Golfweek caught up with Barkley ahead of The Match: Champions for Change, and the former NBA great turned TV commentator responded in kind with his inimitable hilarity and hijinx.

Golfweek: How have you been preparing for The Match III?

Charles Barkley: Iā€™ve been working my behind off. Iā€™ve been hitting balls for 4-5 hours a day and Iā€™ve been playing every day. Listen, if I donā€™t do well it wonā€™t be from a lack of effort, I can promise you that.

GW: What made you want to go from the TV gig to inside the ropes and endure this level of scrutiny on national TV?

CB: I was invited and I wasnā€™t going to turn that down. Plus, the cause is near and dear to my heart. I donā€™t mind embarrassing or humiliating myself for a great cause.

GW: Where do you find pleasure in playing golf? And what keeps you coming back for more?

CB: Thereā€™s only two things when you are a celebrity that you can do and get peace and quiet: golf and fishing. I meet amazing people in my life but when you go to the supermarket, people want to talk to you. When you go to the dry cleaner, people want to talk to. Itā€™s hard to find something to do when youā€™re famous. But when you go on the golf course and youā€™re out there in nature, thereā€™s nothing like it.

GW: Whatā€™s your most embarrassing moment on a golf course?

CB: When I switched to left-handed clubs the next day in a tournament after playing poorly. People were like, wait, you sucked right-handed, what makes you think youā€™re talented enough to play lefty?

GW: When did you develop the hitch in your swing and whatā€™s the craziest things youā€™ve tried to fix it?

CB: Probably 20 years ago. I used to be a good player until I took too many lessons from too many different people. Now Iā€™ve got 10 people talking to me at a time when Iā€™m trying to swing the golf club. Iā€™m really trying to get out of it. Iā€™m working with Stan Utley now and Iā€™m playing better than I have in 20 years. But Iā€™ve tried everything, including hypnosis. Iā€™ll never believe in it again. I woke up with the same sh–y swing.

GW: Whatā€™s the most money youā€™ve ever lost in a match?

CB: Probably $5,000. I may be stupid but Iā€™m not stupid enough to play for a ton of money as bad as my golf game is.

GW: Whoā€™s the best trash talker youā€™ve ever played against?

CB: Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Michael thinks heā€™s Tiger Woods when heā€™s playing golf and Tiger Woods is just the greatest of all time. Michael is faking it and Tiger is just better than everyone else.

GW: How many majors should Phil have won?

CB: The guy had one of the greatest careers ever. Itā€™s hard to win. Thatā€™s one thing that drives me crazy. Tigerā€™s only won15 majors out of how many? Itā€™s hard to win, man.

GW: How many more majors would Phil have won if you were on his bag?

CB: If I took Bonesā€™s spot? Heā€™d have like three more.

GW: How do you and Phil compare to the Dream Team?

CB: Playing with Phil is one of the great joys of my life. Itā€™s crazy how good he is. Iā€™ve never played with anyone with a better short game.

GW: How much coaching has Phil given you?

CB: Letā€™s just say this, Iā€™ve had enough coaching. Iā€™m ready to play.

GW: Whatā€™s the difference between standing over a 5-foot putt to win a hole and trying to make a free throw to win a game?

CB: In one Iā€™ve got supreme confidence in myself and the other I donā€™t. Iā€™m not going to miss a free throw. Itā€™s clearly going to come down to how I handle the pressure and hopefully I have better coping skills from all my practice and hard work.Ā I just canā€™t embarrass myself. Steph is a great player, Peyton is a good player, and Iā€™m the wild card. If I play good, we should win.

GW: Win or lose, you and Phil are going to dominate the trash talking, right?

CB: You clearly donā€™t know Peyton well. He can hold his own on the trash talk. Heā€™s scratch in that department.

GW: Why should America tune in on Friday?

CB: Simple. Itā€™s going to be fun and itā€™s for a great cause.
