Naughty Dog is ‘working hard’ to fix The Last of Us on PC

The company will release numerous fixes in an upcoming patch.

It’s no secret that The Last of Us Part 1‘s PC port is a buggy mess, and developer Naughty Dog knows that fans are unhappy about it.

“We know some of you have not experienced the Naughty Dog quality you expected,” reads a company statement on Twitter. “Our team is working hard to resolve issues currently preventing some of you from experiencing the game to ensure it reaches the quality level you expect and deserve.”

Naughty Dog then explains that The Last of Us Part 1 will receive a hotfix patch on Tuesday, April 3, 2023, addressing numerous issues like jittering on mouse-controller camera movement, several instances of crashing, and more. Additionally, a more-extensive patch will arrive later this week – though the date for that one is still unspecified.

“We also encourage players to ensure you are using the latest Nvidia, AMD, and Intel graphics drivers,” Naughty Dog continues.” Our team, and our dedicated partners at Iron Galaxy will continue to investigate and address known issues to deliver the great The Last of Us Part 1 experience you expect.”

It’s surprising that The Last of Us Part 1‘s PC port came out half-baked, especially since other first-party PlayStation games like God of War and Spider-Man had stellar conversions.

7 actresses (Florence Pugh!) who should play Abby on The Last of Us

Who could play this important character moving forward?

WARNING: DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE LAST OF US SEASON 1.

Ready?

OK!

A few weeks ago, viewers were treated to quite an epic season finale of The Last of Us. It had beloved cameos for the fans, a satisfying end (?) to the arc between Bella Ramsey’s Ellie and Pedro Pascal’s Joel, and it more or less stayed true as an adaptation of the hit video game.

But folks, there’s a season 2 on the way, even if it might take a while. And you better believe that Abby Anderson — the famed antagonist of The Last of Us Part II — is coming. (As are more Infected.)

Who should play this vital character? Who should get in Ellie and Joel’s way? Call it a hunch, but I don’t necessarily think having Abby’s trademark jacked physique will be a prerequisite for any of these performers. (But it would be cool to see one of them transform!)

Let’s run down a few potential great options for HBO’s latest hit series.

The Last of Us Part 1 on Steam has so many bugs

The Last of Us Part 1 made its PC debut on Steam, but it seems like Naughty Dog’s survival horror remake needed a bit more time

The Last of Us Part 1 made its PC debut on Steam, but it seems like Naughty Dog’s survival horror remake needed a bit more time. The game received mostly negative Steam reviews within hours of its release, with players citing crashes, poor framerates, strange graphics glitches, and horrible Steam Deck optimization – despite series co-creator Neil Druckmann suggesting it would work on Valve’s handheld platform.

The game has high minimum and recommended specifications, though many of the negative reports are coming from users with high-end PCs that meet or exceed these requirements.

The launch comes after PlayStation ported several of its first-party games to PC with far fewer issues. Horizon Zero Dawn, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and God of War launched with few or no substantial problems, though Returnal suffered from a series of random “fatal error” messages.

When The Last of Us Part 1 does run, it’s not exactly at its best.

Several players reported Joel looking odd in different ways thanks to what seems like a problem with light rendering. The Steam Deck takes several hours just to load the shaders, which it has to do every time it launches the game, and once it does start, some players reported only getting framerates in the single digits – before it crashed completely.

One user said you can fix the shader loading issue by installing an older version of Oodle decompression library to bypass the bugged, newer version the game ships with. That seemingly won’t fix the framerate, graphics, and crashing issues, though.

Naughty Dog said on Twitter that the team is aware of the game’s issues and will work on addressing them in a series of patches. The studio didn’t mention a timeline for when these updates might launch or what problems will receive higher priority.

The Last of Us Season 2 will take ‘a while,’ says Bella Ramsey

Filming will likely start in 2023 and conclude early next year.

Everyone is screaming for Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us, but it’s probably a few years away.

During an interview with The Jonathan Ross Show, actress Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us, explained that while filming for Season 2 should begin later in 2023 – it will not premiere anytime soon (thanks, The Independent).

“It will be a while,” Ramsey said. “I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year and the beginning of next. So it’ll probably be at the end of 2024, early 2025.”

Ramsey’s co-star Pedro Pascal recently hinted that shooting for Season 2 might begin this year, though both actors suggest the details are still up in the air. At any rate, don’t expect to reunite with Ellie and Joel for a while.

What we do know about Season 2 is it’ll cover The Last of Us Part 2‘s storyline, though only partially – HBO will need multiple seasons to adapt that game, considering it’s usually around 25 hours long for a first-time playthrough. There’ll also be a lot more infected for those eager for extra mush zombie fun – which is most of us, in fairness.

There was almost a Last of Us prequel game about Ellie’s mom

The project ‘fell apart’ before coming to fruition.

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has revealed that a Last of Us prequel starring Ellie’s mother was briefly in development.

As a heads up: there will be brief spoilers for Episode 9 of HBO’s The Last of Us, which aired on Sunday. So consider this a spoiler warning!

During an interview with Kinda Funny, Druckmann discussed the episode’s opening, which features Ellie’s mother, Anna. It’s a brief scene that was initially going to be a prequel game to The Last of Us Part 1.

“There was a much more full version of this story that went further back in time that was going to be made into a video game,” Druckmann said. “[It] wasn’t going to be made by Naughty Dog, but by a different studio.”

Druckmann continues by saying that the project fell through early on, so HBO was free to use some of those story ideas in the show. A clever way to utilize abandoned material, isn’t it?

Interestingly enough, in the series, Anna was played by Ashley Johnson – the actress that plays Ellie in The Last Of Us Part 1 and The Last Of Us Part 2. Longtime fans went wild when Johnson came on screen for obvious reasons.

The Last of Us is more popular than ever these days. Episode 9 of the HBO show saw record-breaking viewership, and Naughty Dog is already working on a multiplayer spinoff.

‘Fans really want The Last Of Us Part 3,’ says Naughty Dog boss

Co-president Neil Druckmann confirms the studio is working on a new game but doesn’t clarify if it’s another sequel.

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann acknowledged that the studio is working on another game but didn’t specify whether it’s The Last of Us Part 3.

During an interview with Kinda Funny, Neil Druckmann confirms that Naughty Dog’s next big-budget AAA game is in production – without clarifying what it might be.

“I know the fans really want The Last Of Us Part 3 – I hear about it all the time,” Druckmann said. “All I can say is that we’re already into our next project, and the decision has already been made. I can’t say what it is, but that is the process we went through.”

Druckmann goes on to state that this mysterious project is “the thing [Naughty Dog] is the most excited for,” – but again, he doesn’t drop even a hint. However, Druckmann did offer some insight into how it begins working on a game.

“At the end of every project, we purposefully explore several different projects,” Druckmann explains. “Some might be a sequel, and then a bunch of new ideas – and then we feel like, ‘where do our passions lie?’ because that’s the fire that has to sustain [us] for years to come.”

Naughty Dog’s next game (that we know of) is The Last of Us multiplayer game, which we’ll likely hear more about later in 2023. Of course, many people from the studio are also helping with HBO’s series, which just finished its record-breaking first season – Season 2 might not be far away, either.

HBO’s The Last of Us season finale breaks viewership record

Season 1’s last episode was the most-watched yet, despite airing alongside the Oscars.

HBO’s The Last of Us closed out its first season on Sunday, with the finale being the most-watched episode yet.

As reported by VarietyThe Last of Us Episode 9 brought in 8.2 million viewers – which is particularly impressive considering it aired during ABC’s telecast of the Oscars. It’s also worth noting that viewership almost doubled from Episode 1, which had a massive debut of 4.7 million viewers, to Episode 9’s 8.2 million viewers – increases like that over the course of a season are relatively uncommon.

The Last of Us maintained strong ratings throughout Season 1. Episode 4 brought in 7.5 million viewers, despite airing during the 2023 Grammys – an all-time high until Episode 9 set a new peak. Weird how the records keep coming during big entertainment award shows, eh?

It’s no surprise that everyone is eagerly awaiting a second season. Don’t worry: it’s coming – filming might even begin later in 2023, or so says Pedro Pascal.

As for what Season 2 will entail, it’ll begin covering the events of The Last of Us Part 2. Given that the game is around 25 hours long, the showrunners have stated it’ll take more than one season to cover in full. There’ll probably be more infected next go-around as well for anyone itching to see more horrific mushroom zombies.

The Last of Us fans were overjoyed to see these two major cameos in the season 1 finale

The Last of Us fans were treated to some familiar faces in the season 1 finale.

Longtime fans of The Last of Us were given quite the treat during the TV show’s season finale on Sunday.

HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, the critically-acclaimed video game series developed by Naughty Dog, ended its first season on Sunday to much discussion from fans. The post-apocalyptic drama series, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as the series main characters Joel and Ellie, has become a big hit in the prestige TV world over the last few months.

And it’s not difficult to see why, as The Last of Us has been a pretty darn good and faithful adaptation of its dramatic, emotional source material. Not only that, in Sunday’s season finale, fans were treated to not one, but two cameos from its video game cast.

Spoilers for The Last of Us episode nine “Look for the Light” ahead.

Episode nine opens with Ellie’s mother, Anna, giving birth after being bitten by an infected. Playing Anna, however, was none other than Ashley Johnson, who originated the role of Ellie in The Last of Us video games!

Not only that, later in the episode, Laura Bailey got a minute-long cameo as a nurse during a pivotal scene. Bailey voiced a few minor characters in The Last of Us, but played a much larger role in the game’s sequel The Last of Us Part II.

How cool is that! Fans of The Last of Us were rightfully elated to see these two major actresses from the video games get cameos in HBO’s adaptation.

The Last of Us Season 2 will have ‘a lot’ more infected

Get ready for a lot more scar mushroom people.

If you have a mighty need for more flesh-eating mushroom monsters in HBO’s The Last Of Us – Season 2 will be upping the ante.

During a pre-show press conference on Sunday, The Last of Us showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin addressed a lingering criticism from fans that the show didn’t feature many infected (thanks, IGN).

“Within the episodes that we were concentrating on, I think ultimately we generally stressed the power of relationships and trying to find significance within moments of action,” Mazin said. “And so, there may be less action than some people wanted because we couldn’t necessarily find significance for quite a bit of it or a concern that it would be repetitive.”

“After all, you’re not playing it – you’re watching it,” Mazin continues. “Although a lot of people do like to watch gameplay, it needs to be, I think, a little bit more focused and purposeful when we’re putting it on TV.”

Changes to the source material were inevitable, and franchise co-creator Neil Druckmann doesn’t blame fans for being upset. When it comes to battling the infected, though – the cuts were apparently necessary.

“We took a very high-level approach and looked at just the action across the board,” Druckmann explained. “Every piece of action, if you look at the show, has to move character in some way. If it doesn’t move character and it was only there for spectacle, then it was an easy cut for us.”

Season 2 will adapt The Last of Us Part 2‘s story – partially, at least. Filming might begin later this year, according to Pedro Pascal.

HBO’s The Last of Us will take ‘more than one season’ to cover the second game

It’ll take ‘more than one season” to adapt Part 2’s story.

The Last of Us Part 2 fans, rejoice! Season 2 of HBO’s show will adapt that game’s storyline, but it’ll take multiple seasons to cover every major plot beat, according to the show’s co-creators.

During an interview with GQ, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin reaffirmed that the second season will cover The Last of Us Part 2’s storyline but not its entirety.

“It’s more than one season,” Druckmann said.

In short: it’s happening, but The Last of Us Part 2 is quite a long game, typically clocking in at around 25 hours for a first-time playthrough. As such, Druckmann and Mazin would not specify how many seasons it’ll take to cover the game’s storyline.

“You have noted correctly that we will not say how many,” Mazin adds. “But more than one is factually correct.”

HBO’s The Last of Us was recently renewed for a second season, with the natural assumption that it’ll tackle Part 2‘s divisive narrative. Druckmann is excited about revisiting the story nonetheless, though.

“Some of the stuff I’m most excited for [in The Last of Us Part 2] are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version,” Druckmann explains. “And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.”

No word on when Second 2 might come out, though Pedro Pascal thinks filming could start in 2023.
