HBO’s The Last of Us will take ‘more than one season’ to cover the second game

It’ll take ‘more than one season” to adapt Part 2’s story.

The Last of Us Part 2 fans, rejoice! Season 2 of HBO’s show will adapt that game’s storyline, but it’ll take multiple seasons to cover every major plot beat, according to the show’s co-creators.

During an interview with GQ, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin reaffirmed that the second season will cover The Last of Us Part 2’s storyline but not its entirety.

“It’s more than one season,” Druckmann said.

In short: it’s happening, but The Last of Us Part 2 is quite a long game, typically clocking in at around 25 hours for a first-time playthrough. As such, Druckmann and Mazin would not specify how many seasons it’ll take to cover the game’s storyline.

“You have noted correctly that we will not say how many,” Mazin adds. “But more than one is factually correct.”

HBO’s The Last of Us was recently renewed for a second season, with the natural assumption that it’ll tackle Part 2‘s divisive narrative. Druckmann is excited about revisiting the story nonetheless, though.

“Some of the stuff I’m most excited for [in The Last of Us Part 2] are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version,” Druckmann explains. “And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.”

No word on when Second 2 might come out, though Pedro Pascal thinks filming could start in 2023.
