Texas vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The two weeks off should make a difference.

Kansas State has had an interesting few weeks with the tough loss at TCU followed up by the shocking obliteration of Oklahoma State, and Texas has had a little time to rest up and be ready for the finishing kick. Now it has to be sharp.

How did Kansas State destroy the Cowboys 48-0? The defense picked a perfect time to come up with its best performance of the year, but that wasn’t normal for the run D.

Get Bijan Robinson going, keep grinding it, and getting to 200 yards is possible on the Wildcat front. It’ll be the other side, though, that matters.

Kansas State is throwing better – Will Howard was fantastic in place of a banged up Adrian Martinez against OSU – but it has to run to win.  Texas has more of a downfield passing game if Robinson and the ground attack don’t rock, but there’s a problem if Kansas State isn’t running well.

It got by Iowa State and its great defense in a fight, but it lost the other two times it was under 199 rushing yards.

Why Kansas State Will Win

It’s not a bad thing when you’re trying to figure out the right good quarterback to play.

This is still Adrian Martinez’s team, but Will Howard has been too good to push aside after the performance against Oklahoma State. Everyone knows what the offense can do – get running, let Deuce Vaughn go off – but if there’s a passing game, too, look out.

Run well, hit the third down throws, and rely on the hot defense and turnover margin to get it done. The team is +9, Texas doesn’t take the ball away, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s the problem. Can the Kansas State defense dominate?

Texas doesn’t have a problem moving the ball, and Kansas State is 4-0 when allowing fewer than 300 yards and 2-2 when it doesn’t.

The Longhorns will come out firing with two weeks to get ready and will have a big first half. At home, the Wildcats will settle in after halftime, the running game will take over, and the momentum from the Oklahoma State game will continue.

Why Texas Will Win

Texas is struggling. Kansas State is really having issues.

The Wildcats are on a ten-game losing streak including an 82-67 loss in Austin to the Longhorns back in mid-January. Texas was hardly perfect, but it seemed to hit just about from the field – it nailed 53% of its shots – but that’s not all that far off from the norm for the Big 12’s worst defense.

Kansas State’s D is bad, the O is playing worse, and there’s no rebounding and a whole lot of mistakes. Other than that, everything is going great in Manhattan. But …

Why Kansas State Will Win

It’s not like Texas is turning out the lights on anyone lately … except for Kansas State.

That was the only win since January 9th, losing four of the last five games losing a few close games and getting rocked by Baylor. The Longhorns were miserable from the free throw line against the Bears, and they couldn’t seem to hit a three against Oklahoma State.

Kansas State needs a few breaks. Texas makes enough mistakes to let that happen, and the Wildcats have to take advantage of every one of them. They’re going to keep firing up the threes and they could keep the pressure on.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansa State is having way too many issues putting the biscuit in the basket.

It’s not getting totally annihilated at home – at least not always – having most of its problems on the road. It’ll slow things down enough to not let this get too out of hand, but Texas will be able to pull away in the second half by finally getting the shooting touch back.

Why Texas Will Win

The Kansas State defense has gone bye-bye.

What’s been the huge problem over the four game losing streak? The run defense struggled, the pass defense struggled, and against Oklahoma State, the offense struggled.

For Kansas State to be Kansas State, it has to control the clock and own third downs, and it’s not doing that. The passing game has stalled and the offense hasn’t hit 400 yards in any of the last six games.

Everyone wants to rip on Texas and Tom Herman, but the team isn’t playing poorly. It’s been in fight after fight, and it could just as easily be playing this weekend to get into the Big 12 championship as it is to be an also-ran.

The passing game picked it up against Iowa State, but …

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Kansas State Will Win

Texas isn’t owning the clock like it should.

QB Sam Ehlinger should be a third down conversion machine, but he isn’t doing it enough – the offense should be a whole lot better at coming up with clutch drives.

For all of Kansas State’s issues, the offensive line isn’t doing a horrible job – the running game came up with well over 220 yards in two of the last three weeks –  the pass rush is good enough to bother Ehlinger, and if the passing game was ever going to work, this would be the week.

The Texas pass defense has collapsed, allowing way over 1,000 yards over the last three games, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State can’t throw. It has to run to win, but the Texas defensive front has improved over the last month and should be able to hold this game in check.

Texas might not be perfect, and it has certainly been a disappointment overall, but it was on a three-game winning streak before failing to close out Iowa State last week. It’ll get the groove back in yet another close, interesting game that comes down to the wire.

No one plays up or down to the competition like Texas does. It’ll do it again.
