Why Iowa State Will Win

The Cyclones are SO close.

That doesn’t mean much in a Big 12 with all ten teams good enough to beat anyone else in the league, but all three losses could’ve gone either way thanks to a defense that’s stuffing just about everything.

Kansas is rolling up points at will on everyone – it was held to 14 points and was a few missed kicks away from dropping that.

Kansas State’s high-powered ground game was held to 131 yards by the best run defense on the best overall D in the league.

Texas might have cranked up the offense against Alabama – and everyone else – but it has yet to deal with a defensive front that’s able to hold up the run like the Cyclones do.

Bijan Robinson will get his yards, and the Longhorns will get close to 150, but they won’t be able to take over like they’ll want to.

Why Texas Will Win

Iowa State doesn’t have the explosion if the Longhorns get off to a good start.

Baylor got up 17-7 in the first half in the 31-24 win over the Cyclones, and that was about it. No one else has been able to crank up the early points to put the pressure on, partly because no one else has the receiving weapons Texas brings.

What did Texas do in the fantastic 49-0 destruction of Oklahoma? It exploded with three first half Quinn Ewers touchdown passes on the way to a 28-0 first half lead. Against Texas Tech the Longhorns came up with 24 points in the first half, and they got out to a 28-0 lead on West Virginia.

Steve Sarksian and the coaching staff should be able to dial up three good drives to get started, score on two of them, and that might be it.

Iowa State doesn’t have the firepower to keep up and come back without forcing a slew of mistakes, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Texas isn’t turning the ball over, and Iowa State has only forced three takeaways over the last three games.

The Cyclone D is just that good and will keep the game from getting out of hand. The passing game will make a few pushes in the second half, but there will be too much chasing.

Texas will never feel comfortable, but the defense will hold firm in key moments in the second half to get out with a third straight win.

Texas was on its way to the Big 12 Championship, the College Football Playoff, and maybe even bigger things after the first quarter in Dallas against Oklahoma.

The O still has enough talent to hang with just about anyone, Iowa State’s great D is coming off an awful performance in a loss to West Virginia, and now it’s time to start bombing away.

The Cyclone defense has been among the best in the Big 12, but it’s been spotty over the last few weeks in the secondary. It was hardly a big issue, and then Mountaineer QB Jarret Doege threw for 370 yards.

Yeah, the Texas offense has a slew of wonderful parts, but it’s like an ensemble cast movie full of high-end actors that don’t quite mesh.

The passing attack has been brutally inconsistent, the rushing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards since the first week of October, and it’s all struggling just as the run defense has gone bye-bye.

It hasn’t been a total disaster, but it can’t seem to come up with any meaningful stops lately. It’s allowed 220 rushing yards or more in each of the last three games, and the team is now 0-4 when allowing at least that many. It’s 4-0 when it doesn’t.

Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor. Texas can’t beat the good teams, it got past the four mediocre ones on the slate, and now it has to deal with another good team.

Worst of all for the Longhorns, it’s getting an outstanding Iowa State defense coming off a miserable performance against West Virginia.

Why Texas Will Win

Iowa State can’t buy a break.

It’s not like the team is playing all that poorly lately, but something’s amiss when you lose 14 straight.

Texas hasn’t been playing all that well and it’s struggling to score, but Iowa State keeps failing to come up with that one big rebound, that one big basket, and that one big moment to break through in the clutch.

It’s also not creating its own breaks, failing to get to the free throw line lately and not doing enough to force the action. Worst of all, the team is shooting as well as it had all year and it’s still losing. But …

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Cyclones really are shooting well – for them.

They’ve at least flirted with 50% from the field against Baylor and TCU, and they’re coming off of two of their better shooting days from three.

Texas just can’t seem to get rolling from three, struggling way too much in three of the last four games and not making up for it in a grind of a finish.

Iowa State played well in the 78-72 loss to the Longhorns back in early January, but it got destroyed on the boards. If the rebounding margin is close, the game should be, too.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like Texas is in a funk it can’t snap out of.

It’s not like it was ripping teams apart when it started out 10-1, but it was able able to maintain control. There aren’t any awful losses to point to lately, but shooting has been a stronger and there are too many turnovers and not enough assists.

Texas will rebound from the loss to Texas Tech, but it won’t be anything pretty.

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Cyclone offense has found its balance and groove.

When the program gets to 200 yards rushing and 200 passing, it’s 4-0. How many times did Iowa State go 200/200 last year? Once – and it beat ULM 72-20.

How many times did it do it in 2018? Twice, and five times in four years – that’s it. Now the offense has evolved, and if it does that again, it wins.

Texas is 5-0 when teams aren’t throwing the balance at the defense, and when offenses are able to do the 200/200 thing? Texas is 0-2.

The Cyclones are doing everything right. They’re converting on third downs, they’re not getting hit for a slew of penalties, and they’re leading the Big 12 in takeaways.

Let Texas make the big mistakes, mix up the offense, and it should all work.

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorn defense has finally been able to step up against the run. To go along with that 200/200 thing, when the D holds opponents to under 100 rushing yards the team is 3-0, and the program is 12-0 over the last three years.

Okay, so Iowa State isn’t going to run for fewer than 100 yards, but Texas has figured out how to make teams one dimensional holding Baylor and West Virginia under 100 in the last three games. It’s been great against the run lately – the team is tackling better – and the pass defense will take its chances.

Texas wants to stop Cyclone 100-yard rushing machine Breece Hall first, and it starts by not letting him grind his way to the second-level. Iowa State QB Brock Purdy has been red hot – three touchdown passes in each of the last three games – but he also rolled against three mediocre teams.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are on a three-game winning streak, both are playing well, and both are looking to this as the moment to make a big statement in the Big 12 title chase.

At home, the Texas defense will continue to be strong enough, QB Sam Ehlinger will get over a few off games by being a bit more consistent down the field while also relying on the ground attack – freshman Bijan Robinson will be effective – and Texas will be on the doorstep of getting a spot in the Big 12 Championship.
