Texas baseball looks to win series with BYU on Saturday afternoon

Texas looks to advance to 20 wins on the season.

By multiple measures the Texas baseball team has underachieved in 2024. Despite it all, the team has another golden opportunity in front of it. The Longhorns look to win a fourth straight series in Big 12 play.

To its credit, Texas has not lost a series in league competition. The team has defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Baylor Bears and Kansas State Wildcats ahead of the series finale with BYU. Texas Tech and Kansas State are among the better teams in the Big 12.

The BYU series sits at a 1-1 tie after a tough 7-5 loss in Game 1. Texas evened the series on Friday with a 4-3 win. Max Belyeu is leading the way batting 4-for-7 so far in the two games. The sophomore right fielder added and RBI and two walks to the total reaching base over 66% of the time.

BYU first baseman Cooper Vest and catcher Collin Reuter have done the most damage at the plate for the Cougars. The two batters have combined to go 9-for-19 from the plate in the first two games.

With the Longhorns sitting at 19-12 and 0.5 games behind Oklahoma for first place in conference, Texas has an opportunity to build momentum in its push for NCAA tournament seeding. The third game of the series takes place at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.

BYU holds on, defeats Longhorns to open three-game set in baseball

The Texas Longhorns baseball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the BYU Cougars.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the BYU Cougars, who defeated Texas 7-5 in Big 12 baseball action Thursday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Cougars built a 6-0 lead before Texas got RBI singles from Dee Kennedy and Peyton Powell to cut the deficit to 6-2. After BYU got a run in the top of the sixth, the Longhorns got a solo home run from Jack O’Dowd before Kennedy’s double got him to three RBI in the contest.

Still, after getting 10 hits through six innings, the Longhorns mustered only two hits over the last three innings of play.

The win broke a six-game losing streak for BYU, 12-14 (5-8). Ben Hansen (4-3) picked up the win for the Cougars, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out five Longhorns batters.

Lebarron Johnson Jr. (1-3) took the loss for UT, giving up four runs on six hits in three innings while striking out four batters. Andre Duplantier II struck out five batters, pitching the eighth and ninth innings.

Texas, 18-12 (6-4), and BYU continue their three-game set Friday in Austin.

By the numbers: No. 7 Texas routs BYU in stellar performance by the defense

Here are the numbers in Texas’ vital conference win vs BYU.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns didn’t allow a touchdown all game against BYU. No matter who you are playing that is a big deal.

Before Saturday’s matchup, BYU was averaging over 26 points per game. The Longhorns held their opponent to two field goals, credited to defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s adjustments from last week’s near disaster of a finish vs Houston.

Sure, there are things you can criticize Texas for during the game, but what matters is they won. With disappointing finishes from Longhorns teams in previous years, going into November with a 7-1 record is something we can all be happy with.

Here are the final numbers in Saturday’s vital conference win vs BYU.

Texas QB Maalik Murphy has efficient day in first career start

Maalik Murphy didn’t need to fill the stat sheet, but still performed well in place of the injured Quinn Ewers.

The Texas Longhorns defeated the BYU Cougars 35-6 on Saturday. Quarterback Maalik Murphy tagged his first career collegiate start for Texas in place of the injured Quinn Ewers.

Murphy had a very efficient day, throwing for 170 yards and two touchdowns with a 64% completion rate. Despite committing two turnovers, Murphy performed as well as one could hope for his first start.

The redshirt freshman played his role perfectly, managing the game effectively without trying to do anything extra to fill in for Ewers.

Murphy found wide receiver Adonai Mitchell in the endzone twice during the game, the first one coming on a 3rd and 8 for a 30-yard touchdown.

We don’t know if Ewers will be available next week for the Kansas State game. However, if Murphy starts, we can expect fewer turnovers as he will have had a week to review the game footage from his first start and refine his game.

Texas still needs to fix red zone problems despite dominant victory

No. 7 Texas wins 35-6, but finishing drives continues to be a problem.

On Saturday, the No. 7 Texas Longhorns defeated the BYU Cougars to improve to 7-1 on the season.

During the 35-6 rout of the Cougars, Texas’ defense was the main storyline.

BYU’s offense, averaging 28 points per game, was limited to just six by Texas in the game. The Longhorns also had three takeaways during Saturday’s matchup.

Although the defense won the game, finishing drives seems to still pose a problem for Steve Sarkisian and the Texas offense.

During the second quarter, quarterback Maalik Murphy was sacked and fumbled the ball. Despite it being his debut start and a missed block, it was still a missed opportunity.

Moving on to the third quarter, Texas managed to drive down the field from their own 21-yard line but was stopped on fourth down at the BYU two-yard line.

On their missed red zone opportunity, the Longhorns put together a 64-yard drive but failed to convert on 4th and 1, resulting in another turnover on fourth down.

The Longhorns have been struggling to finish drives lately, which can be attributed to the new quarterback play. If they want to remain undefeated and qualify for the Big 12 Championship game, they will need to address this issue moving forward.

Halftime: Texas leads BYU, 21-3

Texas weathered a shaky start for Maalik Murphy.

Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy enjoyed his first half as the Texas Longhorns’ starting quarterback. It didn’t get out to the greatest start.

The Longhorns quarterback struggled, throwing into coverage, telegraphing an interception and fumbling with Texas set up at the opponent’s 10-yard line. Despite it all, Texas found a ways to score and build a lead.

After a first series punt for BYU, Texas receiver Xavier Worthy housed a 74-yard punt return. The play helped spark more enthusiasm for the team.

Murphy later found his footing and delivered on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Texas receiver AD Mitchell. The play was set up by several runs and quick passing game from Murphy who looked to find a rhythm.

The Texas defense was dominant. The unit surrendered just three points and 113 total yards on the half.

The team entered the half set up to win the game. Texas will look to see more of the comfortable version of Murphy moving forward.

Texas Football: Health update ahead of Saturday’s matchup

Steve Sarkisian provides an update on several players for Saturday’s game.

The Texas Longhorns could be closer to full strength outside of the quarterback position this week. Several once injured Longhorns are set to play against BYU.

On Thursday, head football coach Steve Sarkisian gave us an update on a few questionable players. According to Sarkisian, the following will all be available: Alfred Collins, Gavin Holmes, Terrance Brooks, Ryan Watts, Cole Hutson, and Jett Bush.

It will be crucial for the secondary to have Holmes, Brooks, and Watts when No. 7 Texas faces BYU on Saturday. The trio needs to step up their game to avoid a repeat of last week’s disappointing defensive performance in the latter half of the game.

It is unclear why defensive back Jahdae Barron missed some of the game against Houston last week. There has been no update on his status from Sark, but it is anticipated that he will play and be on the field.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns will host the BYU Cougars on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT.

By the numbers: How No. 7 Texas compares to the BYU Cougars

Taking a look at the overall comparisons between No. 7 Texas and BYU to see who has the edge for Saturday’s game.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns are set to face off against the BYU Cougars on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT. The Cougars hold a record of 5-2 with conference wins over Kansas and Houston.

Texas fans shouldn’t take this game lightly, even if BYU doesn’t seem as menacing as they have in previous years.

With quarterback Quinn Ewers considered week-to-week, the offense will likely be in the hands of Maalik Murphy, a redshirt freshman who has seen minimal playing time.

Without Texas’ starting quarterback, how should the Longhorns attack BYU’s defense?

The obvious answer is running the ball. Texas running back Jonathon Brooks has been on a tear, and with freshman CJ Baxter getting healthy, expect a solid one-two punch from the talented backs.

With Murphy getting his first career collegiate start, head coach Steve Sarkisian will have to formulate a game plan that suits the inexperienced signal-caller and can get the offense rolling early.

With that being said, let’s take a look at the overall numbers between No. 7 Texas and BYU to see who has the edge.
