Five keys to the game for No.21 Texas vs. UTSA on Saturday

Texas needs to establish the run early and often against UTSA.

Texas hosts UTSA on Saturday night for the first-ever matchup between the two in-state programs.

Each team enters the ballgame with a 1-1 record. Texas comfortably handled UL Monroe in its first game before losing a heartbreak to No. 1 Alabama in Week 2. UTSA dropped an overtime thriller to Houston to open the season before getting back on track last week against Army.

The Longhorns look to avoid a trap game situation against the Roadrunners. Texas is coming off a hard-fought battle against Alabama and could be caught looking ahead to Big 12 play next week.

UTSA won 12 games a year ago and returns star quarterback Frank Harris. Head coach Jeff Traylor has the program on the rise in San Antonio.

Texas is entering this battle a bit banged up. Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers is out for a few weeks with an SC sprain while Bijan Robinson, Hudson Card and D’Shawn Jamison are all day to day with injuries of their own.

Here are five keys to the game for Texas vs. UTSA this weekend.

Texas Report Card: PFF grades from the Alabama game

Here’s a look at the highest and lowest graded players from the Texas-Alabama game.

Texas narrowly fell short from pulling off one of the biggest upsets in college football history on Saturday.

No. 1 Alabama defeated Texas 20-19 in the final seconds. Pete Kwiatkowski and Gary Patterson put together a stellar defensive game plan for Texas that gave Alabama quarterback Bryce Young fits all game. However, Young was able to get the job done with two impressive drives in the fourth quarter to put the Crimson Tide ahead.

There were several impressive individual performances for Texas and many young players stepped up and proved they’re able to compete alongside the top players in the country.

As far as Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades from this game, the top performers on offense were quarterback Quinn Ewers and right tackle Christian Jones, while linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey held that honor on the defensive side. Take a look at which Longhorns graded well, and which ones were on the wrong end of the spectrum.

What we learned from Texas’ 20-19 loss to No. 1 Alabama

What we learned from Texas’ heartbreaking loss to Alabama.

An inspired Texas team took No. 1 Alabama all the way down to the wire on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide came out on top with a narrow 20-19 victory after a hard-fought defensive battle. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young led two go-ahead drives in the fourth quarter after struggling much of the game.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game with a shoulder injury late in the first quarter. The Longhorns’ offense was not quite the same when Ewers got sidelined.

Pete Kwaitkowiki’s defense proved to be the story of the game. His unit gave Alabama fits all day. Texas forced constant pressure on Bryce Young and limited the Tide’s dynamic offense to just 20 points.

The Longhorns did not finish the job but proved on the biggest stage they can compete with anyone in the nation. Texas looks much improved and a real threat to compete for a Big 12 title.

Here is what we learned from Texas’ 20-19 loss to No. 1 Alabama.

The energy in Austin, Texas right now is at an all-time high.

Both the ESPN and Fox pregame shows are in town, adding hype to an already anticipated matchup between No. 1 Alabama and Texas.

The Crimson Tide is heavily favored over the Longhorns, but that hasn’t stopped many Texas fans from confidently showing up bright and early to support their team in what is expected to be a record-breaking crowd.

Alabama and Texas haven’t met since the 2010 BCS Championship game where Colt McCoy left the game early due to a shoulder injury.

Here’s a look at the best pregame social media buzz ahead of the Texas-Alabama game.

Texas QB Quinn Ewers ‘getting more comfortable’ as a leader

“I think he is totally out of his shell now and he’s got a lot of respect from his teammates.”

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers made his Longhorns debut in a 52-10 season-opening win over UL Monroe. The redshirt freshman completed 16 of 24 passes for two touchdowns in the performance.

Steve Sarkisian praised how his quarterback handled his first game at Texas and bounced back after a shaky start. Sark complemented Ewers’ growing leadership ability with the media this week.

“I think he did great. It’s only going to continue to improve because I’ve seen it. I’ve really started to see it in kind of the second half of this last week. You could feel his presence and you can start to see he’s getting more comfortable. It’s tough when you’re a first-year starter and you’re barking at guys to do something about what the call is or motivating guys. I think he is totally out of his shell now and he’s got a lot of respect from his teammates.”

Texas faces a huge test this week as No. 1 Alabama comes to town. Ewers hopes to lead the Texas offense to a big day and potentially pull off the upset.

Best prop bets for the Texas Longhorns’ Week 2 matchup

The top prop bets for Texas in Week 2 as it hosts Alabama.

The Texas Longhorns are coming off a season-opening win over the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks and have their sights on the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Horns are looking to prove they belong among the nation’s best. This also pits Nick Saban against a former assistant, Steve Sarkisian.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers threw his first collegiate pass last week as the Horns throttled ULM, 52-10. While Ewers threw an interception with his second pass, he ended up with 225 yards and 2 TDs. How does he fare against Will Anderson and the Tide defense?
